Fistful Of Facts, Peter. Salomone
Fistful Of Facts, Peter. Salomone
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
In 1919, the Soviet filmmaker Dziga Vertov declared a "death sentence" on fictional films. Vertov championed his own unique method of non-fiction filmmaking, called Kino-Eye, which is based on Vertov's ideas regarding truth in cinema. Although he does not write specifically about Vertov or film, the philosopher Nelson Goodman offers a contrasting view of truth in general. By comparing the Kino-Eye method to Goodman's philosophy, we can better understand Vertov's radical ideas and see more clearly how the concept of cinematic truth has changed over time.
Intraspecific Aggression In The Brown Rover Ant, Brachymyrmex Obscurior, Whitney A. Ruddock
Intraspecific Aggression In The Brown Rover Ant, Brachymyrmex Obscurior, Whitney A. Ruddock
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
Invasive ant species often show unicoloniality, forming networks of connected colonies (i.e. supercolonies), which may extend hundreds or even thousands of kilometers. These "supercolonies" lack intraspecific aggression, thus fighting between colonies is absent. Unicoloniality may be an adaptive mechanism that allows for invasive ant species to reach higher population density and achieve ecological dominance. We used aggression assays to study unicoloniality within and between colonies of the invasive brown rover ant, Brachymyrmex obscurior on the Florida Atlantic University campus in Jupiter, FL. We found that the four B. obscurior colonies could be behaviorally divided into two areas: workers from both …

It's Not Easy Being Brownish-Green, Benjamin J. Ross
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
Sorites dominicensis is a common epiphytic foraminifera living throughout the Carribean and South Florida, and is commonly found living on turtle grass, Thalassia Testudinum. S. dominicensis plays host to algal symbionts related to those found in coral. Estimates for the numbers in these symbiotic populations are few, of limited scale, and vary widely. In this thesis we performed a large scale survey of the populations of algal symbionts living within the S. dominicensis population of Jupiter Sound. We then used this data to propose a linear model for the relationship between foraminiferal size and endosymbiont population, and to suggest explanations …

Occurrence And Demographics Of Upper Respiratory Tract Disease In The Abacoa Greenway Gopher Tortoises (Gopherus Polyphemus), Tatiana Alexandra. Mendoza
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
Upper Respiratory Tract Disease (URTD) is a highly contagious illness, caused by the bacterium Mycoplasma agassazii. URTD has affected the gopher tortoise population in the Abacoa Greenway, and is believed to have a high mortality rate. In this study, 18 samples of tortoise blood were collected from this location. Fifteen of the 18 samples were collected from previously tested individuals. Comparisons between the previously tested tortoises were made. According to this study there is no documented mortality rate with URTD in Abacoa. Results show that four tortoises have continued to test positive for the antibodies for several years, suggesting a …
Role Of Church-State Conflict In The Growth Of Religious Pluralism In Latin America, Michael. Mcmillan
Role Of Church-State Conflict In The Growth Of Religious Pluralism In Latin America, Michael. Mcmillan
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
Since the 1960s Latin America has experienced a religious transformation, with several countries developing significant Protestant populations. These religious changes have influenced the political processes of several Latin American nations, playing a prominent role in elections and the formation of political platforms. Several theories attempt to account for the recent growth in religious pluralism, particularly social anomie theory and religious market models. These theories ignore or downplay the role of conflict between the state and civil society, especially violent confrontations between the government and the Roman Catholic Church. This study focuses on four case studies with varying amounts of church-state …

Pentecostalism, Development And Democracy In Latin America, Pierre A. Louis
Pentecostalism, Development And Democracy In Latin America, Pierre A. Louis
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
The recent explosive growth of Protestantism in Latin America has led a number of scholars to predict that the region may be on its way to reaching a significantly higher levels of socioeconomic development and democracy. These are important claims for a region that has struggled with both economic development and democratic consolidation. This thesis argues that Protestantism in Latin America does not follow the classical Weberian pattern of development. Because the majority of Protestant growth in the region is Pentecostal, the causal assumptions of the--culture and development school do not hold. Furthermore, a context of neoliberalism, a significant colonial …
Assessment Of Multiple Paternity For The Queen Conch, Strombus Gigas, Chris. Harris
Assessment Of Multiple Paternity For The Queen Conch, Strombus Gigas, Chris. Harris
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
The commercially important queen conch, Strombus gigas, has been observed copulating with multiple partners and laying multiple egg masses during a reproductive season (Randall, 1964). While multiple paternity has been confirmed using microsatellite based genetic analysis for a variety of other gastropods, this technique has not been employed for S. gigas. Determining whether or not this species is capable of multiple paternity is important to understanding and maintaining genetic diversity of natural and captive populations. While an assessment of multiple paternity is the ultimate goal of this study, for my thesis, I have completed preliminary work which includes perfecting methods …
House Ants Of Karachi, Pakistan, Malik. Haji
House Ants Of Karachi, Pakistan, Malik. Haji
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
Ants are ubiquitous and ecologically important, yet little is known of ants within Pakistan. I studied ants collected from houses and apartments in Karachi, Pakistan to determine which ants are common indoor ants. Ants were attracted by spilling syrups and sodas on the floor which were left overnight. The following morning the ants were collected using an aspirator. A total of eleven species were found. Of these eight were well-known pest ants with worldwide distributions: Paratrechina longicornis, Tetramorium simillimum, Monomorium pharaonis, Monomorium subopacum, Monomorium destructor, Tapinoma melanocephalum, Pheidole megacephala, and Tetramorium bicarinatum. Three others, Camponotus sp., Pheidole sp., and Solenopsis …
They Forget I Am An Irishman", Mark. Goldberg-Foss
They Forget I Am An Irishman", Mark. Goldberg-Foss
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
Early twentieth-century Ireland was the setting of a complex political situation dominated by overlapping social, ideological, and ethnic conflicts. A group of working-class nationalists led by James Connolly attempted to fuse the class and national struggles, incorporating elements of nationalist cosmology, Marxist teleology, syndicalist trade-union practice, and the cultural militarization of Ireland's "physical-force" tradition. This thesis critically examines their hybrid theory and revolutionary praxis. With its analysis of the failure to realize an independent, socialist Ireland, it contributes to broader discussions of the relationship between nationalism and socialism, and the ability of these theories to address cultural heterogeneity.
Diatoms As A Food Source For Sorites Dominicensis, Tiffany. Gaston
Diatoms As A Food Source For Sorites Dominicensis, Tiffany. Gaston
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
Sorites dominicensis is a common Foraminifera living on Thalassia testudinum seagrass blades in the Indian River Lagoon. This locality is unique because epiphytic diatoms, characteristic of Caribbean and temperate environments, are expected to make up the biofilm community. Diatoms compose a large part of the Foraminiferan diet. It is important to understand the cause and effect relationship of population variation between S. dominicensis and its preferred food source, since both are valuable bioindicators. We examined the selective feeding of S. dominicensis by first, identifying the diatom assemblage. Second, we utilized scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to identifying the remains …
Own-Age Bias And Memory For Events, Danielle L. Boutté
Own-Age Bias And Memory For Events, Danielle L. Boutté
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
Event memory studies have shown that older adults typically have poorer memories for events than do younger adults. Unfortunately, these studies tested memory for events that contained only young adults as the actors. It could be that the younger adults remembered the events better due to an own-age bias. One particular type of event memory error is called unconscious transference. In unconscious transference, a binding error results in false conjunction memories. Several studies have shown that older adults are more likely to make these errors. This study aims to look more closely at the effects of own-age bias on face …
Grassroots Gospel, Lauren. Bimmler
Grassroots Gospel, Lauren. Bimmler
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
The presence of music, especially in the form of freedom songs, is a notable constant in the American Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Participants sang spirituals and freedom songs everywhere in the South - at mass meetings, demonstrations, and in jails. An engaging and participatory activity, singing unified, empowered, and historicized activists, allowing everyone an opportunity to be included in the action. Without these songs, the African-American communities across the South may not have been able to band together to become such a force for change; while the activists were the facilitators for progress, the songs were …
Jury Decision-Making, Steven. Hackett
Jury Decision-Making, Steven. Hackett
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
This thesis is a study of the empirical significance of sentencing information on jury decision-making. A challenge in conducting jury behavior research is that direct observation of jury deliberation is either illegal or impractical. Thus most studies of jury behavior are conducted using archival analysis and mock jury questionnaires. And while we have some information on the issue of jury instruction complexity on jury decision-making, we know very little about the specific role of sentencing information on jury decision-making. My research combines aspects of the jury decision-making literature with the sentencing literature, and thus fills a crucial gap in the …
Painful State Of Pleasure In Charlotte Brontèe's Jane Eyre, Michelle. Cannon
Painful State Of Pleasure In Charlotte Brontèe's Jane Eyre, Michelle. Cannon
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
The heroine of Charlotte Brontèe's Jane Eyre is torn between her physical desire to remain close to Mr. Rochester and her psychological need for distance from him. Jane's need for distance tends to dominate her desire for closeness, and this internal conflict is reproduced externally in her relationship with Rochester, with Rochester's desire for physical proximity conflicting with Jane's desire for distance. These internal and external power struggles create a healthy sense of tension necessary both to Jane, and to her relationship with Rochester because it prevents either of them from being fully satisfied, and ensures that both remain in …

This is an exploratory study that examines the relationship between selected components of ecommerce readiness and dimensions of Davis’ (1989) Technology Acceptance Model. Building upon the notion that there exists some linkage between ecommerce readiness and technology Acceptance, this study seeks to examine these linkages in e-businesses within Barbados. Three relationships are proposed – a relationship between technology acceptance and the existing e-Readiness infrastructure, a relationship between technology acceptance and current telecommunications access, and a relationship between technology acceptance and education. The results of this study demonstrated that there are strong relationships between e-commerce readiness components and various technology acceptance …
The Oil Drilling Model And Iterative Deepening Genetic Annealing Algorithm For The Traveling Salesman Problem, Hoong Chuin Lau, Fei Xiao
The Oil Drilling Model And Iterative Deepening Genetic Annealing Algorithm For The Traveling Salesman Problem, Hoong Chuin Lau, Fei Xiao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this work, we liken the solving of combinatorial optimization problems under a prescribed computational budget as hunting for oil in an unexplored ground. Using this generic model, we instantiate an iterative deepening genetic annealing (IDGA) algorithm, which is a variant of memetic algorithms. Computational results on the traveling salesman problem show that IDGA is more effective than standard genetic algorithms or simulated annealing algorithms or a straightforward hybrid of them. Our model is readily applicable to solve other combinatorial optimization problems.

Collective Outsourcing To Market (Com): A Market-Based Framework For Information Supply Chain Outsourcing, Fang Fang, Zhiling Guo, Andrew B. Whinston
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper discusses the importance of and a solution to separating the information flow from the physical product flow in a supply chain. Motivated by the inefficient demand forecast caused by information asymmetry and lack of an incentive among supply chain partners to share valuable information, we propose a radically new framework called collective outsourcing to market (COM) to address many information supply chain design challenges. To validate the COM framework, we consider a supply chain with one manufacturer and multiple downstream retailers. Retailers privately acquire demand forecast information that they do not have incentive to share horizontally with other …
