Durability And Retro-Reflectivity Of Pavement Markings (Synthesis Study), Yi Jiang Jan 2008

Durability And Retro-Reflectivity Of Pavement Markings (Synthesis Study), Yi Jiang

JTRP Technical Reports

Waterborne paints are used to paint pavement markings (edgelines and centerlines) to provide guidance for motorists. The painted markings need to be repainted periodically as their retro-reflectivity deteriorates. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) repaints pavement markings at least annually. INDOT engineers would like to determine the feasibility of extending the time intervals of repainting pavement markings on at least some types of roadways. The purpose of this synthesis study is to accomplish the following: (1) to locate and assemble documented information on pavement marking durability; (2) to learn what criteria have been used in other states in measuring retro-reflectivity …

Scalable Concurrent Hash Tables Via Relativistic Programming, Josh Triplett Jan 2008

Scalable Concurrent Hash Tables Via Relativistic Programming, Josh Triplett

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Existing approaches to concurrent programming often fail to account for synchronization costs on modern shared-memory multipro- cessor architectures. A new approach to concurrent programming, known as relativistic programming, can reduce or in some cases eliminate synchronization overhead on such architectures. This approach avoids the costs of inter-processor communication and memory access by permitting processors to operate from a relativistic view of memory provided by their own caches, rather than from an absolute reference frame of memory as seen by all processors. This research shows how relativistic programming techniques can provide the perceived advantages of optimistic synchronization without the useless parallelism …

Reconstructing Images As Piecewise Smooth Functions, Ralf Juengling Jan 2008

Reconstructing Images As Piecewise Smooth Functions, Ralf Juengling

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Leclerc’s approach to image reconstruction consists of finding the shortest description of the data (an image) as a model (reconstruction) plus noise [5]. The approach poses two design problems: 1. Define an appropriate description language for image models and noise, 2. Derive an objective function and conceive an optimization algorithm that finds good local minima. Leclerc proposed to model images as piecewise low order polynomials and to describe models in terms of region boundaries (discontinuity set) and polynomial coefficients.

In this report I describe Leclerc’s methodology, and, adopting his image model and description language, derive an objective function within this …

The Concept And The Rule Of Law, Jeremy Waldron Jan 2008

The Concept And The Rule Of Law, Jeremy Waldron

Georgia Law Review

This Essay explores and connects two issues: (1) the relation between the Rule of Law (or legality) and the work we do in general jurisprudence on the concept of law; and (2) the distinction between conceptions of the Rule of Law that emphasize certainty, rules, and predictability and conceptions of the Rule of Law that also emphasize procedure and argument, even when legal argumentation detracts from the certainty emphasized the first set of conceptions. First, the Essay argues in favor of a more demanding understanding of what law it (informed by the ideal of the Rule of Law); in other …

Securities Class Actions As Pragmatic Ex Post Regulation, Elizabeth C. Burch Jan 2008

Securities Class Actions As Pragmatic Ex Post Regulation, Elizabeth C. Burch

Georgia Law Review

Securities class actions are on the chopping block--again. Traditional commentators continue to view class actions with suspicion; they see class suits as nonmeritorious byproducts of self-interest and the attorneys who bring them as rent-seekers. This approach has popularized securities class actions' negative effects. High-profile commissions capitalizing on this rhetoric, such as the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation, have recently recommended eliminating or severely curtailing securities class actions. But this approach misses the point: in the ongoing push and pull of securities regulation, corporations are winning the battle. Thus, understandingthe complete picture of securities class actions necessitates a positive pragmatic account. This …

A Key To Unlocking Your Iphone: Eliminating Wireless Service Providers' Use Of United States Copyright Law To Limit Consumer Choice And Provider Competition, Tate M. Keenan Jan 2008

A Key To Unlocking Your Iphone: Eliminating Wireless Service Providers' Use Of United States Copyright Law To Limit Consumer Choice And Provider Competition, Tate M. Keenan

Georgia Law Review

While consumers have a choice whether to purchase an iPhone, they have no choice in the wireless service provider that is linked to it. This is just one example of what has become a regular practice in the world of American cellular phones--cell phone locking. Today, modern American cell phone users stand at the mercy of wireless service providers. They are placed in this position in part because wireless service providers have had the inadvertent luxury of being overly protected by United States copyright law. As the law stands today, wireless service providers are not only free to lock handsets …

Ritual, Emotion, And Political Belief: The Search For The Constitutional Limit To Patriotic Education In Public Schools, Brent T. White Jan 2008

Ritual, Emotion, And Political Belief: The Search For The Constitutional Limit To Patriotic Education In Public Schools, Brent T. White

Georgia Law Review

Young children across America begin the school day with ritualized expressions of loyalty to the United States. Relying upon evidence from the cognitive and neurosciences, this Article argues that such patriotic rituals embed patriotic predispositions in children's unconscious at a time when they are especially vulnerable to emotional manipulation. These patriotic predispositions in turn sharply constrain children's future conceptions of political reality and shape their political beliefs. Additionally, by conditioning the same symbolic attachments in the vast majority of Americans, ritualized patriotic education contributes to the manipulation of the public by public officials, legitimizes anti-democratic aspects of the American system, …

The Online Zoom Lens: Why Internet Street-Level Mapping Technologies Demand Reconsideration Of The Modern-Day Tort Notion Of "Public Privacy", Andrew Lavoie Jan 2008

The Online Zoom Lens: Why Internet Street-Level Mapping Technologies Demand Reconsideration Of The Modern-Day Tort Notion Of "Public Privacy", Andrew Lavoie

Georgia Law Review

Internet mapping technologies provide detailed, overhead views of our world and have been in existence for practically a decade. In 2007, however, several private companies expanded the technology and began offering street-level imagery as an extra feature for their online map users. Google, the most notable company to take this step, created "Street View," which allows users to see major cities and metropolitan areas around the world from the still-frame perspective of a car passing by. These images display with considerable clarity, not only skyscrapers, parks, and private homes, but also-and more importantly-vehicles, bicyclists, and people on the streets at the …

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

We focus on two major problems in the study of paleokarst of the Biscayne aquifer in southeastem Florida: ( 1 ), current conceptual models of karst aquifers do not adequately characterize much of the eogenetic rnacropore system within the carbonate rocks of the Biscayne aquifer, and (2) standard laboratory core-analysis rnethods cannol be used lo accurately measure the permeability of highly macroporous carbonate core samples.

Two Major Flaws Of The Animal Rights Movement, Geordie Duckler Jan 2008

Two Major Flaws Of The Animal Rights Movement, Geordie Duckler

Animal Law Review

In its current guise, animal rights advocacy imposes few intellectual demands on its proponents, usually requiring little more than a colorful Web site and a college dictionary, the former to construct an audience, and the latter to provide the emotion-laden phrases needed to inflame that audience into supporting stringent penalties for animal-related crimes. Hard thought is not really essential for animal rights advocates to be able to proclaim an end to animal abuse or an allegiance to easing animal suffering, and the standard advocate toolkit simply need not include “rational legal analysis” among the apparatus utilized to rail against mistreatment, …

Dog Meat In Korea: A Socio-Legal Challenge, Rakhyun E. Kim Jan 2008

Dog Meat In Korea: A Socio-Legal Challenge, Rakhyun E. Kim

Animal Law Review

This article explores the dog meat debate in Korea from a socio-legal perspective. It first examines the legal status of dogs and dog meat, and the legal protection for dogs under the old and new legislative frameworks. It then discusses socio-legal challenges to banning dog meat in the Korean context, employing examples of both legal approaches taken by other countries and the politics of dog meat in Korea, specifically. The article argues that the controversy over dog meat must be reframed and dog meat be socially redefined in order to protect dogs, which are currently caught in the conflict over …

No Names, Please: The Virtual Victimization Of Children, Crime Victims, The Mentally Ill, And Others In Appellate Court Opinions, Joel M. Schumm

Georgia Law Review

Google and other search engines allow anyone with Internet access the ability to obtain a wealth of information about their neighbors, acquaintances, employees, or even adversaries. Although easy access to information is generally a positive development, the easy discovery of highly personal and stigmatizing information often is not. It is particularly disconcerting when the information is being purveyed by appellate courts around the nation when they post hundreds of opinions to court websites every day. This Article surveys the use of initials and pseudonyms in appellate opinions for victims of crime, children, the mentally ill, jurors, and others. It discusses …

Think Twice Before You Type: Blogging Your Way To Unemployment, Scott R. Grubman Jan 2008

Think Twice Before You Type: Blogging Your Way To Unemployment, Scott R. Grubman

Georgia Law Review

Over the last several years, "blogging" has taking the Internet world by storm and is now one of the most popular online activities among Americans. With the rising popularity of the Internet, and the blogging phenomenon in particular, both employees and employers have developed new concerns regarding the activities of employee-bloggers. The concerns emanating from both sides of the equation are quite reasonable given the stakes at issue-for the employee-blogger, his or her job; for the employer, its reputation and bottom line. While there are very few, if any, specific statutes designed to protect the activities of employee-bloggers, there are …

Body Dissatisfaction And Self-Esteem Among Male College Students, Jessie Devlin, Lindsay Ross, Beth A. Kotchick Jan 2008

Body Dissatisfaction And Self-Esteem Among Male College Students, Jessie Devlin, Lindsay Ross, Beth A. Kotchick

Modern Psychological Studies

The purpose of this study was to examine self-esteem, exposure to the media's portrayal of the ideal male body, and athletic standing of college-aged men in relation to body dissatisfaction. College men (N= 100) were surveyed on these variables. It was hypothesized that males with greater body dissatisfaction would have lower levels of self-esteem. Further, it was expected that males who were more frequently exposed to the body ideal would have higher levels of body dissatisfaction, and that males who do not participate in a college sport would have higher levels of body dissatisfaction than those who do. Results show …

Low Power Energy Harvesting And Storage Techniques From Ambient Human Powered Energy Sources, Faruk Yildiz Jan 2008

Low Power Energy Harvesting And Storage Techniques From Ambient Human Powered Energy Sources, Faruk Yildiz

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Conventional electrochemical batteries power most of the portable and wireless electronic devices that are operated by electric power. In the past few years, electrochemical batteries and energy storage devices have improved significantly. However, this progress has not been able to keep up with the development of microprocessors, memory storage, and sensors of electronic applications. Battery weight, lifespan and reliability often limit the abilities and the range of such applications of battery powered devices. These conventional devices were designed to be powered with batteries as required, but did not allow scavenging of ambient energy as a power source. In contrast, development …

Property And Relative Status , Nestor M. Davidson Jan 2008

Property And Relative Status , Nestor M. Davidson

Faculty Scholarship

Property does many things-it incentivizes productive activity, facilitates exchange, forms an integral part of individual identity, and shapes communities. But property does something equally fundamental: it communicates. And perhaps the most ubiquitous and important messages that property communicates have to do with relative status, with the material world defining and reinforcing a variety of economic, social, and cultural hierarchies. This status-signaling function of property-with property serving as an important locus for symbolic meaning through which people compare themselves to others-complicates premises underlying central discourses in contemporary property theory. In particular, status signaling can skew property's incentive and allocative benefits, leading …

The Impact Of A Professional Learning Community On Student Achievement, Brandon S. Carter Jan 2008

The Impact Of A Professional Learning Community On Student Achievement, Brandon S. Carter

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Professional learning communities (PLC) have the potential to strengthen students' academic achievement. An academic pyramid of interventions, one aspect of PLCs, may be especially helpful in schools where subgroups of students are underperforming relative to other students on standardized testing. This quantitative, one-group, pretest-posttest study examined the impact of implementing an academic pyramid of interventions as part of a PLC on middle school student academic achievement. The 100 students from grade 7 and 8 who participated in the study were identified by teachers as being at-risk for success on the Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT). The reading and math test …

Filtering, Piracy Surveillance And Disobedience , Sonia K. Katyal

Faculty Scholarship

There has always been a cyclical relationship between the prevention of piracy and the protection of civil liberties. While civil liberties advocates previously warned about the aggressive nature of copyright protection initiatives, more recently, a number of major players in the music industry have eventually ceded to less direct forms of control over consumer behavior. As more aggressive forms of consumer control, like litigation, have receded, we have also seen a rise in more passive forms of consumer surveillance. Moreover, even as technology has developed more perfect means for filtering and surveillance over online piracy, a number of major players …

Synergistic Surfactant Interactions And The Consequences On Phase Behavior, Interfacial Tension Reduction And Hydrophobic Surface Wetting, Makonnen Mateós Payne

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The ability for some of the nonionic trisiloxane surfactants to completely and rapidly wet a hydrophobic surface has been well documented for several years. However, to date, the behavior of the trisiloxane surfactants at the solid-liquid interface is not yet completely understood, leading to an incomplete understanding of the mechanism for complete wetting. In this work we report our findings with regard to the synergistic interactions between polyethylene oxide surfactants of the general structure CiE j and compare the behavior to a known super wetting surfactant. Pendant drop tensiometry experiments and sessile drop contact angle measurements on hydrophobic surfaces were …

Routing Protocol Performance Evaluation For Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks, Pedro A. Lopez-Fernandez Jan 2008

Routing Protocol Performance Evaluation For Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks, Pedro A. Lopez-Fernandez

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Currently, MANETs are a very active area of research, due to their great potential to provide networking capabilities when it is not feasible to have a fixed infrastructure in place, or to provide a complement to the existing infrastructure. Routing in this kind of network is much more challenging than in conventional networks, due to its mobile nature and limited power and hardware resources.

The most practical way to conduct routing studies of MANETs is by means of simulators such as GloMoSim. GloMoSim was utilized in this research to investigate various performance statistics and draw comparisons among different MANET routing …

Recent Developments In Us Copyright Law – Part Ii, Caselaw: Exclusive Rights On The Ebb?, Jane C. Ginsburg

Faculty Scholarship

The 1976 Act announces broad exclusive rights, offset by a myriad of specific exemptions, and one wide exception for "fair use." In words and intent, the exclusive rights are capacious, but new technologies may have caused some of the general phrases to become more constraining than might have been expected from a text whose drafters took pains to make forward-looking. Thus, the scope of the reproduction right turns on the meaning of "copy;" the reach of the distribution right on "distribute copies" and "transfer of ownership;" the range of the public performance right on "public" and "perform." Entrepreneurs and users …
