Access To Justice - Rights Or Rations? Comparing European Legal Aid Systems In The Context Of A Shrinking Budgetary Environmentâ, Lynne Follett

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The inspiration for this thesis was derived from a week spent in the family law department of a local solicitor's practice. The UK government's reforms to the legal aid system were about to be implemented and appeared to be affecting the work undertaken as well as the morale of the solicitors working there. The discussion reviews the recent and proposed reforms to legal aid in England and Wales and their effect on access to justice. A comparison is made with other legal aid systems within the EU, examining best practices and the rationale behind implementation of reforms in order to …

Book Review: Mac Os X, Ipod, And Iphone Forensic Analysis Dvd Toolkit, Gary C. Kessler

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Apple's hold on the personal computer marketplace started dwindling on August 12, 1981, the day that the IBM PC was introduced. As an Apple ][+ bigot myself, I refused to touch a PC for some years. But I was also a command line bigot, so when the first Macintosh was introduced in 1983 and hermetically sealed the operating system from users, I did not go out and buy one. In fact, like many of my era, I did eventually end up on the PC side which, ironically, let me do many of the things that my trusty Apple ][+ had …

Reaction To The Reactors, Ted Eisenberg

The Mathematics Enthusiast

1. A comment. I discussed the contents of my paper with colleagues on many different occasions. By their reactions they seem to divide themselves into two camps. One camp takes the stance of: Are you crazy to mention such things in the classroom? We are charged to teach mathematics, and that’s it. Who cares if Einstein never learned to swim? The other camp however takes an opposite stance: Such items are really important for students to know because they help students to think about the lives and times of the men who created the material they are studying; our lessons …

The aim of this paper is to investigate the appropriateness, concurrent and construct validity of action map as a tool for assessing situated problem solving performance. Action map is rooted in activity theory whose stipulations are compatible with situated problem solving. Thirty-one last year secondary students were given three tasks with real –world context. Based on the analysis of the written solutions and interviews, evidence is presented on the appropriateness and validity of action map as an instrument to assess situated problem solving performance.

A Reflection On Mathematical Cognition: How Far Have We Come And Where Are We Going?, Kristin Umland Jan 2008

A Reflection On Mathematical Cognition: How Far Have We Come And Where Are We Going?, Kristin Umland

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Any theory of mathematical cognition and learning must ultimately articulate with our current understanding of how the mind works and with current theories of how knowledge is acquired from both an individual and social perspective. Certainly the human mind is very complex; understanding how it works in general and identifying the components that contribute to “doing mathematics” in particular is no easy task. To understand how the mind does mathematics, we must identify what mathematicians actually do in the context of everyday cognition. Here we discuss some of what is known and about this and point out directions for future …

Environment, Labor, And Race: An Historical Geography Of St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, 1878-1956, Amy Rhiannon Sumpter

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, is known as a white suburb of New Orleans. It also has a well-known history as a health resort for wealthy New Orleanians during the summer months, particularly during yellow fever outbreaks in the late nineteenth- and early twentieth centuries. This research investigates the historical geography of this parish in terms of race and attempts to answer the question of how St. Tammany became an attractive place for the development of white subdivisions in the 1950s. I uncover the connections between race, labor, the environment, and political culture of the parish from 1878—the year Reconstruction ended—to …

Bioanalytical Methods For Studies Of Homocysteine And Novel Cardiovascular Disease Indicators, Arther T. Gates Jan 2008

Bioanalytical Methods For Studies Of Homocysteine And Novel Cardiovascular Disease Indicators, Arther T. Gates

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the development of analytical methods for studies of CVD biomarkers and related biomolecular indicators. Initially, spectroscopic studies were conducted to investigate the chemical reactivity of homocysteine (Hcy), an independent CVD risk factor and serological biomarker. Consequently, we proposed an alternate theory for in vivo Hcy clearance based on spontaneous pyridoxal tetrahydrothiazine (PT) formation from Hcy and pyridoxal. The validity of PT-assisted Hcy clearance was further evaluated by use of capillary electrophoretic methods, which allowed rapid monitoring of protein oligomerization in PT-protein reaction mixtures. The results of these studies suggest that PT formation is a plausible mechanism for …

Current Transport Modeling Of Carbon Nanotube Field Effect Transistors For Analysis And Design Of Integrated Circuits, Jose Mauricio Marulanda Prado Jan 2008

Current Transport Modeling Of Carbon Nanotube Field Effect Transistors For Analysis And Design Of Integrated Circuits, Jose Mauricio Marulanda Prado

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a complete current transport model for carbon nanotube field effect transistors (CNT-FETs) applicable in the analysis and design of integrated circuits. The model was derived by investigating the electronic structure of carbon nanotubes and using basic laws of electrostatics describing a field effect transistor. We first derived analytical expressions for the carrier concentration in carbon nanotubes for different chiral vectors (n,m) by studying and characterizing their electronic structure. Results showed a strong relation to the diameter and wrapping angle of carbon nanotubes. The charge distribution in a CNT-FET is characterized from the …

Catalytic Synthesis Of Ethanol From Biomass-Derived Syngas, Adefemi Adelanwa Egbebi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Syngas produced by gasification of biomass or coal can be converted directly to ethanol and higher alcohols by processes based on heterogeneous catalysts. Ethanol can be used as a neat fuel or fuel additive or as a hydrogen carrier. Rhodium-based catalysts have been found to be most selective for the formation of C2 oxygenates from the hydrogenation of CO when suitably promoted. Here, we explore the effects of Mn, Fe, and Li promoters on Rh/TiO2. Rh-TiO2, Rh-Li/TiO2, Rh-Mn/TiO2, Rh-Mn-Li/TiO2 and Rh-Mn-Li-Fe/TiO2 catalysts were tested for the hydrogenation of CO …

Nonlinear Identification And Control: A Practical Solution And Its Application, Xiaodong Na Jan 2008

Nonlinear Identification And Control: A Practical Solution And Its Application, Xiaodong Na

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

It is well known that typical welding processes such as laser welding are nonlinear although mostly they are treated as linear system. For the purpose of automatic control, Identification of nonlinear system, especially welding processes is a necessary and fundamental problem. The purpose of this research is to develop a simple and practical identification and control for welding processes. Many investigations have shown the possibility to represent physical processes by nonlinear models, such as Hammerstein structure, consisting of a nonlinearity and linear dynamics in series with each other. Motivated by the fact that typical welding processes do not have non-zeroes, …

Exploring The Biochemical And Evolutionary Diversity Of Terpene Biosynthetic Enzymes In Plants, Sungbeom Lee

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) is a primitive tree species that has attracted attention because of its horticultural distinctiveness, the wealth of natural products associated with it, and its evolutionary position as a basal angiosperm. Terpenoid constituents were determined from Magnolia leaves and flowers. Magnolia leaves constitutively produced two major terpenoids, andamp;acirc;-cubebene and germacrene A. However, upon wounding Magnolia leaves biosynthesized a significant array of monoand sesquiterpenoids, including andamp;acirc;-pinene, trans-andamp;acirc;-ocimene, andamp;aacute;-gurjunene, andamp;acirc;-caryophyllene and andamp;acirc;-cubebene, along with fatty acid derivatives such as cis-jasmone, for up to 19 hours after treatment. Flowers were also examined for their emission of terpene volatiles prior to …

Electrical And Mechanical Characterization Of Mwnt Filled Conductive Adhesive For Electronics Packaging, Jing Li Jan 2008

Electrical And Mechanical Characterization Of Mwnt Filled Conductive Adhesive For Electronics Packaging, Jing Li

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Lead-tin solder has been widely used as interconnection material in electronics packaging for a long time. In response to environmental legislation, the lead-tin alloys are being replaced with lead-free alloys and electrically conductive adhesives in consumer electronics. Lead-free solder usually require higher reflow temperatures than the traditional lead-tin alloys, which can cause die crack and board warpage in assembly process, thereby impacting the assembly yields. The high tin content in lead-free solder forms tin whiskers, which has the potential to cause short circuits failure. Conductive adhesives are an alternative to solder reflow processing, however, conductive adhesives require up to 80 …

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to advance the understanding of SrS-based a. c. thin film electroluminescent (ACTFEL) devices. The role of traps in the bulk phosphor layer in the light emission mechanism from ACTFEL devices is studied, characterized and modeled.

Experiments were performed to observe the response of the ACTFEL devices to tailored voltage excitations. A physical model was developed to describe the optoelectronic processes taking place in the phosphor; analytical equations were written and numerically simulated to plot the flux and luminance responses of the device to similarly tailored voltage excitations.

The voltage excitation parameters such as amplitude, …

Mechanistic Investigations Of The Trans Excision-Splicing And Trans Insertion-Splicing Reaction, Perry Patrick Dotson Ii Jan 2008

Mechanistic Investigations Of The Trans Excision-Splicing And Trans Insertion-Splicing Reaction, Perry Patrick Dotson Ii

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Group I intron-derived ribozymes are catalytic RNAs that have been engineered to catalyze a variety of different reactions, in addition to the native self-splicing reaction. One such ribozyme, derived from a group I intron of Pneumocystis carinii, can modify RNA transcripts through either the excision or insertion of RNA sequences. These reactions are mediated through the trans excision-splicing (TES) or trans insertionsplicing (TIS) reaction pathways. To increase our current understanding of these reactions, as well as their general applicability, a mechanistic and kinetic framework for the TES reaction was established. Furthermore, additional ribozymes were investigated for their ability to …

Phonon-Energy-Coupling-Enhancement Effect And Its Applications, Pang-Leen Ong Jan 2008

Phonon-Energy-Coupling-Enhancement Effect And Its Applications, Pang-Leen Ong

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Silicon Oxide/Oxynitride (SiO2/SiON) has been the mainstream material used for gate dielectric for MOS transistors for the past 30 years. The aggressive scaling of the feature size of MOS transistor has limited the ability of SiO2/SiON to work effectively as the gate dielectric to modulate the conduction of current of MOS transistors due to excess leakage current dominated by direct quantum tunneling. Due to this constraint, alternative gate dielectric/high-k is being employed to reduce the leakage current in order to maintain the rate of scaling of MOS transistors. However, the cost involved in the implementation of …
