Maternal Influences On Children's Eating Behaviors, Raena Lynne Matthews Jan 2008

Maternal Influences On Children's Eating Behaviors, Raena Lynne Matthews

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this study was to examine maternal influences on childhood obesity, specifically the impact of maternal modeling of eating behaviors and sensitivity/control on children's eating behaviors. It was hypothesized that: 1) maternal modeling of eating behaviors would significantly predict children's eating behaviors, 2) the degree of maternal control of children's eating cues would influence child self-regulatory ability,1 and 3) maternal modeling would have a greater relationship to child eating behavior than maternal sensitivity/control.

Participants were 153 mothers with at least one child 6 to 11 years old. Mothers completed a questionnaire ‘ assessing eating behaviors for themselves and …

The Nine Reasons Why Inmates Offend: Rational Choice And Determinism, Anthony Robert Carbo

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis aimed to accurately identify and categorize the general criminal motivations of sentenced inmates at Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center (GHRC). By administering a survey to sentenced inmates this study supported the research hypothesis that all of the participants would agree that they had committed their illegal act due exclusively to one or more of the nine reasons discussed.

This thesis is more closely aligned with challenging rhetorical standards as it sought to identify feminist counter positions of rhetoric in film violence.

No Place To Stand: The Incoherent Legal World Of J. K. Rowling, Kenneth Schneyer Jan 2008

No Place To Stand: The Incoherent Legal World Of J. K. Rowling, Kenneth Schneyer

Humanities Department Faculty Publications & Research

It is astonishing, when one thinks of it, that a series of children's books is so crammed with law. Not one of the seven Harry Potter novels fails to explore difficult issues law, interpretation and especially the relationship of the state to the individual. From practically the first page of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (SS) we ponder issues of child custody, fosterage and adoption;1 before Harry even gets to Hogwarts we have heard about crime and punishment,2 legal control over the use of magic,3 monetary policy,4 and Wizarding government.5 Before the series is complete we have witnessed five …

The Individualization Fallacy In Forensic Science Evidence, Michael J. Saks, Jonathan J. Koehler Jan 2008

The Individualization Fallacy In Forensic Science Evidence, Michael J. Saks, Jonathan J. Koehler

Vanderbilt Law Review

Forensic identification science involves two fundamental steps. The first step is to compare a questioned item of evidence to an exemplar from a known source and judge whether they appear so alike that they can be said to match. The second step is to assess the meaning of that reported match: What is the probability that the questioned and the known originated from the same source?

Different risks of error are present at each step. The risk of error in the first step is that a reported match between a questioned and a known sample might not really match. Even …

Language Endangerment In West Africa: Its Victims And Causes, George Tucker Childs Jan 2008

Language Endangerment In West Africa: Its Victims And Causes, George Tucker Childs

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper catalogues the forces at work threatening the Atlantic languages of Guinea and Sierra Leone. Compared to Mande, the other major language group in the area, and to figures for Africa in general (Sommer 1992), the Atlantic Group is beset by ominous forces. These include what could be considered ecological features (e.g., Mufwene 2001): the Mande Expansion (Niane 1989), colonialism, the spread of Islam, and globalization. There are other forces to be sure, such as the influence of Christian missions (Welmers 1971; cf. Mühlhäusler 1990), urbanization (a sub-category, perhaps, of globalization), and climatic changes (Brooks 1993, Fairhead and Leach …

Excluding Religion Excludes More Than Religion, Richard Stith Jan 2008

Excluding Religion Excludes More Than Religion, Richard Stith

Law Faculty Publications

This Article contends that excluding apparently religious perspectives from public debate may inadvertently exclude non-religious perspectives as well, consequently impoverishing public discussion. This contention is demonstrated through an examination of the current debate over embryonic stem cell research, in which the pro-life position is often declared unacceptably religious. The truth is that those who envision the unborn as under construction in the womb do not find a human being present when gestation has just begun, while those who understand the unborn to be developing see an identity of being from conception. But neither view is based on religion. To disqualify …

Improving Knowledge Retention In A Technical Subject By Diversifying The Learning Experience, Lubomir Stanchev Jan 2008

Improving Knowledge Retention In A Technical Subject By Diversifying The Learning Experience, Lubomir Stanchev

Computer Science and Software Engineering

There is no silver bullet when it comes to successful teaching. Some scholars believe that traditional lectures are the panacea, while others are firm believers in active and cooperative learning. In this paper I report on my experience with the two approaches and explore the idea of combining them. In particular, I will argue that diversifying the avenues in which students are exposed to knowledge in a technical discipline, such as computer science, can spark their enthusiasm and make the learning experience more enjoyable and productive.

Flash: A Rapid Method For Prototyping Paper-Based Microfluidic Devices, Andres W. Martinez, Scott T. Phillips, Benjamin J. Wiley, Malancha Gupta, George M. Whitesides

Chemistry and Biochemistry

This article describes FLASH (Fast Lithographic Activation of Sheets), a rapid method for laboratory prototyping of microfluidic devices in paper. Paper-based microfluidic devices are emerging as a new technology for applications in diagnostics for the developing world, where low cost and simplicity are essential. FLASH is based on photolithography, but requires only a UV lamp and a hotplate; no clean-room or special facilities are required (FLASH patterning can even be performed in sunlight if a UV lamp and hotplate are unavailable). The method provides channels in paper with dimensions as small as 200 μm in width and 70 μm in …
