Gender Differences In Lower Limb Frontal Plane Kinematics During Landing, Gerwyn Hughes, James Watkins, Nick Owen Jan 2008

Gender Differences In Lower Limb Frontal Plane Kinematics During Landing, Gerwyn Hughes, James Watkins, Nick Owen

Kinesiology (Formerly Exercise and Sport Science)

The study aimed to investigate gender differences in knee valgus angle and interknee and inter-ankle distances in university volleyball players when performing opposed block jump landings. Six female and six male university volleyball players performed three dynamic trials each where subjects were instructed to jump up and block a volleyball suspended above a net set at the height of a standard volleyball net as it was spiked against them by an opposing player. Knee valgus/varus, interknee distance and inter-ankle distance (absolute and relative to height) were determined during landing using 3D motion analysis. Females displayed significantly greater maximum valgus angle …

Immunomodulatory Properties Of A Viral Homolog Of Human Interleukin-10 Expressed By Human Cytomegalovirus During The Latent Phase Of Infection, C Jenkins, W Garcia, M J. Godwin, Juliet V. Spencer, J Lewis Stern, Allison Abendroth, Barry Slobedman

Biology Faculty Publications

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) establishes a latent infection in hematopoietic cells, from which it can reactivate to cause significant disease in immunocompromised individuals. HCMV expresses a functional homolog of the immunosuppressive cytokine interleukin-10 (termed cmvIL-10), and alternate splicing of the cmvIL-10 transcript results in expression of a latency-associated cmvIL-10 transcript (LAcmvIL-10). To determine whether LAcmvIL-10 encodes immunosuppressive functions, recombinant LAcmvIL-10 protein was generated, and its impact on major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II) expression was examined on granulocyte macrophage progenitor cells (GM-Ps) and monocytes. LAcmvIL-10 (and cmvIL-10) downregulated MHC-II on the surfaces of both cell types. This downregulation was associated with …

Methods For Detection Of Matrix Metalloproteinases As Biomarkers In Cardiovascular Disease, Viorica Lopez-Avila, Juliet Spencer Jan 2008

Methods For Detection Of Matrix Metalloproteinases As Biomarkers In Cardiovascular Disease, Viorica Lopez-Avila, Juliet Spencer

Biology Faculty Publications

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of zinc-dependent proteolytic enzymes that degrade extracellular matrix (ECM) components like collagen, fibronectin, and laminin. While this activity is important for normal development, morphogenesis, and wound healing, deregulation of MMP activity has been implicated in a number of cardiovascular diseases, including congenital heart defects, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, and congestive heart failure. MMPs are good potential diagnostic indicators of cardiovascular disease, but current detection methods are time consuming and quite laborious. This review will discuss MMP biology, current methods for detection of MMPs from patient samples, and potential new developments in multiplexed analysis of MMPs.

Validation Of An Nsp-Based (Negative Selection Pattern) Gene Family Identification Strategy, Ronald L. Frank, Cyriac Kandoth, Fikret Erçal

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background: Gene family identification from ESTs can be a valuable resource for analysis of genome evolution but presents unique challenges in organisms for which the entire genome is not yet sequenced. We have developed a novel gene family identification method based on negative selection patterns (NSP) between family members to screen EST-generated contigs. This strategy was tested on five known gene families in Arabidopsis to see if individual paralogs could be identified with accuracy from EST data alone when compared to the actual gene sequences in this fully sequenced genome. Results: The NSP method uniquely identified family members in all …

Fisheries Research Report No.172 - Identifying Obstacles To Profitably Growing Out Western Rock Lobsters, Roy Melville-Smith, Danielle Johnston, B. Johnston, N. J. Thomson

Fisheries Research Reports

A Report Prepared for the Aquaculture Development Council.

The cost of growing out western rock lobsters from pueruli to marketable-sized lobsters has been modeled from available information. The model uses different scenarios of survival rates, marketing weights, market prices, feed costs, puerulus prices, labour costs, puerulus compensation costs, discount rates and capital costs. The sensitivity of estimated profitability to various input costs and rock lobster prices was assessed by estimating the impact of changes on the estimates of net present value (NPV) internal rate of return (IRR) and benefit:cost ratio. Importantly, the aim of the study was to identify key …

Protein Adsorption Onto Organically-Modified Silica Glass Leads To A Different Structure Than Sol-Gel Encapsulation, Daryl K. Eggers, B, Menaa, C. Torres, M. Herrero, V. Rives, A. R.W Gilbert Jan 2008

Protein Adsorption Onto Organically-Modified Silica Glass Leads To A Different Structure Than Sol-Gel Encapsulation, Daryl K. Eggers, B, Menaa, C. Torres, M. Herrero, V. Rives, A. R.W Gilbert

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

The secondary structures of two proteins were examined by circular dichroism spectroscopy after adsorption onto a series of organically modified silica glasses. The glasses were prepared by the sol-gel technique and were varied in hydrophobicity by incorporation of 5% methyl, propyl, trifluoropropyl, or n-hexyl silane. Both cytochrome c and apomyoglobin were found to lose secondary structure after adsorption onto the modified glasses. In the case of apomyoglobin, the α-helical content of the adsorbed protein ranged from 21% to 28%, well below the 62% helix found in solution. In contrast, these same glasses led to a striking increase in apomyoglobin structure …

The Analysis Of Cyanide And Its Metabolites In Biological Samples, Brian A. Logue, Diane M. Hinkens

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Cyanide is a toxic chemical that may be introduced to living organisms as a result of both legal and illicit uses of cyanide. Exposure to cyanide can be verifi ed by analyzing cyanide or one of its break-down products from biological samples. This verifi cation is important for medical, law-enforcement, forensic, research, and veterinary purposes. This review will identify common problems associated with the analysis of cyanide and its metabolites, discuss current bioanalytical techniques used for verifi cation of cyanide exposure, and briefl y address the metabolism and toxicokinetics of cyanide and its break-down products in biological systems.

Microfluidic Devices For Terahertz Spectroscopy Of Biomolecules, P. A. George, W. Hui, F. Rana, Benjamin G. Hawkins, A. E. Smith, B. J. Kirby

Faculty Publications

We demonstrate microfluidic devices for terahertz spectroscopy of biomolecules in aqueous solutions. The devices are fabricated out of a plastic material that is both mechanically rigid and optically transparent with near-zero dispersion in the terahertz frequency range. Using a low-power terahertz time-domain spectrometer, we experimentally measure the absorption spectra of the vibrational modes of bovine serum albumin from 0.5–2.5 THz and find good agreement with previously reported data obtained using large-volume solutions and a high-power free-electron laser. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of performing high sensitivity terahertz spectroscopy of biomolecules in aqueous solutions with detectable molecular quantities as small as …

A Promising Change In The Selection Of The Circular Polarization Excitation Used In The Measurement Of Eu(Iii) Circularly Polarized Luminescence, K. Do, F. C. Muller, Gilles Muller Jan 2008

A Promising Change In The Selection Of The Circular Polarization Excitation Used In The Measurement Of Eu(Iii) Circularly Polarized Luminescence, K. Do, F. C. Muller, Gilles Muller

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

A judicious change in the selected transition used for circular polarization excitation will overcome the low oscillator strength limitation of the currently allowed magnetic-dipole 5D1 ← 7F2 (Eu(III)) transition chosen for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measurement. The proposed allowed magnetic-dipole 5D1 ← 7F0 (Eu(III)) transition will facilitate the detection of CPL from the Eu(III) systems of interest. CPL on the acetonitrile solution of the chiral tris complex of Eu(III) with (R,R)-N,N′-bis(1-phenylethyl)-2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide ([Eu((R,R)-1)3]3+), recently suggested as an effective and reliable CPL calibrating agent, confirms the feasibility of the proposed experimental procedure. A comparable CPL activity exhibited by the acetonitrile solution of …

Metacommunity Patterns In Larval Odonates, Shannon J. Mccauley, Christopher J. Davis, Rick A. Relyea, Kerry L. Yurewicz, David K. Skelly, Earl E. Werner

Biological Sciences

The growth of metacommunity ecology as a subdiscipline has increased interest in how processes at different spatial scales structure communities. However, there is still a significant knowledge gap with respect to relating the action of niche-and dispersal-assembly mechanisms to observed species distributions across gradients. Surveys of the larval dragonfly community (Odonata: Anisoptera) in 57 lakes and ponds in southeast Michigan were used to evaluate hypotheses about the processes regulating community structure in this system. We considered the roles of both niche- and dispersal-assembly processes in determining patterns of species richness and composition across a habitat gradient involving changes in the …

Predator Induction Of Spine Length In Larval Leucorrhinia Intacta (Odonata), Shannon Mccauley, Christopher J. Davis, Earl E. Werner

Biological Sciences

Questions: Do larvae of a dragonfly with a broad habitat distribution have longer abdominal spines when they co-exist with fish, and are these differences the result of phenotypic plasticity?
Hypothesis: Phenotypic plasticity will result in larvae having longer spines when they are exposed to cues from predatory fish.
Organism: Larvae of Leucorrhinia intacta (Odonata: Libellulidae).
Research site: Natural ponds and cattle tanks on the E.S. George Reserve in southeast Michigan.
Methods: We compared the morphology of larvae collected from two natural ponds before and after a drought resulted in the extirpation of fish from one pond. We also compared …

Family-Level Community Structure Of Insects Inhabiting Intermittent Streams Within The Northern Glaciated Plains, Ross Vander Vorste, Eric Rasmussen, Nels H. Troelstrup Jr. Jan 2008

Family-Level Community Structure Of Insects Inhabiting Intermittent Streams Within The Northern Glaciated Plains, Ross Vander Vorste, Eric Rasmussen, Nels H. Troelstrup Jr.

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

Intermittent streams comprise about 90% of stream and river miles, and the Northern Glaciated Plains (NGP) ecoregion (46) encompasses about 33% of land area in South Dakota. Currently, little is known about the macroinvertebrate communities inhabiting intermittent streams in this region. This information is crucial if deviations from reference (undisturbed) conditions are to be made. This study examined the aquatic insect communities in intermittent streams (n = 12) located in four level IV ecoregions (Prairie Coteau 46k, Prairie Coteau Escarpment 46l, Big Sioux Basin 46m, James River Lowland 46n) within the NGP. Invertebrates were collected using a quantitative bucket technique …

Chironomidae (Diptera: Insectia) Genera Accumulation Curves For Streams Of The Lower Cheyenne River Watershed, Andrew Kopp, Nels H. Troelstrup Jr.

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

The objective of this analysis was to determine the number of Chironomidae (Diptera) larvae needed to achieve 90% of the genera in fixed-count subsamples. Composite macroinvertebrate samples from 12 sites with three sites being sampled twice were collected during the summer of 2007 and processed using U.S. EPA lab protocols (U.S. EPA 2004). Chironomidae were mounted and identified to genus following Merritt et al. (2008). For each sample, number of genera and percent of Chironomidae needed to reach 90% of genera in the subsample were determined with a genera-accumulation curve. The number of Chironomidae individuals (range = 5-269) and genera …

Seed Predators Of Canada Milk-Vetch And Their Parasitoids, Arvid Boe, Paul J. Johnson

Native Plant Focused Publications

Canada milk-vetch (Astragalus canadensis L.), North America’s most widespread species of Astragalus, is important for herbivores and granivores in natural ecosystems but suffers heavy seed losses to bruchids and curculionids. Our objectives were: (1) compile a species inventory and describe life histories of insects associated with seed production in Canada milk-vetch, and (2) determine frequencies of pod predation and primary parasitism in Canada milk-vetch. The seed predators were Acanthoscelides perforatus (Horn) and Tychius liljebladi Blatchley. Frequency of pod predation varied between two plant populations (46 and 70%) and between A. perforatus (37 %) and T. liljebladi (21 %). The primary …
