Frequent Alterations Of Hmlh1 And Rbsp3/Hya22 At Chromosomal 3p22.3 Region In Early And Late-Onset Breast Carcinoma: Clinical And Prognostic Significance, Satyabrata Sinha, Ratnesh K. Singh, Neyaz Alam, Anup Roy, Susanta Roychoudhury, Chinmay Kumar Panda Jan 2008

Frequent Alterations Of Hmlh1 And Rbsp3/Hya22 At Chromosomal 3p22.3 Region In Early And Late-Onset Breast Carcinoma: Clinical And Prognostic Significance, Satyabrata Sinha, Ratnesh K. Singh, Neyaz Alam, Anup Roy, Susanta Roychoudhury, Chinmay Kumar Panda

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Young age can be an independent prognostic factor for adverse prognosis in women with breast carcinoma (BC). In younger women, BC exhibited more aggressive pathological features than older women, indicating differences in biology. Frequent alterations in chromosomal (chr.) 3p22.3 in different malignancies indicated the existence of multiple candidate tumor suppressor genes (TSG) in this region, yet its association with BC remains unclear. In an effort to understand the differences in molecular pathogenesis in two age groups of BC, detailed analysis of alterations at chr.3p22.3 region was carried out in 47 early onset (group-A: 40 years) BC samples. Deletion mapping of …

A Tale Of Two Case Methods, Benjamin H. Barton Jan 2008

A Tale Of Two Case Methods, Benjamin H. Barton

Scholarly Works

This essay argues that law schools should adopt the business school case method. Business school cases are generally real life problems. They ask the students to read the files and then perform actual management tasks. The students also generally work in teams and are graded on their actual work throughout the semester. The students thus spend their time learning how to actually manage, instead of only learning dry management theory.

There are several advantages to the business school case method. The business school case method is much more focused on the actual process of being a business manager. By comparison, …

Dna -- Intimate Information Or Trash For Public Consumption?, Melanie Wilson

Scholarly Works

This essay discusses the increasingly popular police practice of covertly collecting DNA samples from people who inadvertently leave saliva, hair or other biological matter in public places. The essay contends that although the United States Supreme Court has yet to decide whether the practice is constitutional, well-established Fourth Amendment principles of “abandonment” supply the necessary framework to permit the practice and simultaneously protect citizen privacy.

When Informal Adoption Meets Intestate Succession: The Cultural Myopia Of The Equitable Adoption Doctrine, Michael J. Higdon Jan 2008

When Informal Adoption Meets Intestate Succession: The Cultural Myopia Of The Equitable Adoption Doctrine, Michael J. Higdon

Scholarly Works

In certain circumstances, the equitable adoption doctrine allows a person to inherit as the child of a testator even when the testator was neither that person's biological or adoptive parent. Although this doctrine, at first blush, might appear to be a move toward a more inclusive system of intestate succession, as many scholars have noted, the restrictive tests that the various courts have designed to determine who qualifies as an equitably adopted child have only served to greatly undermine the utility of the doctrine and, in numerous cases, have led to the denial of rather compelling claims.

Kinetic Evaluation Of Highly Active Supported Gold Catalysts Prepared From Monolayer-Protected Clusters: An Experimental Michaelis-Menten Approach For Determining The Oxygen Binding Constant During Co Oxidation Catalysis, Cormac G. Long, John D. Gilbertson, G. Vijayaraghavan, K. J. Stevenson, Christopher J. Pursell, Bert D. Chandler

Chemistry Faculty Research

Thiol monolayer-protected Au clusters (MPCs) were prepared using dendrimer templates, deposited onto a high-surface-area titania, and then the thiol stabilizers were removed under H2/N2. The resulting Au catalysts were characterized with transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed CO. The Au catalysts prepared via this route displayed minimal particle agglomeration during the deposition and activation steps. Structural data obtained from the physical characterization of the Au catalysts were comparable to features exhibited from a traditionally prepared standard Au catalyst obtained from the World Gold Council (WGC). A differential kinetic study of CO oxidation catalysis by the …

The Influence Of Dose Grid Resolution On Beam Selection Strategies In Radiotherapy Treatment Design, Ryan Acosta, Matthias Ehrgott, Allen G. Holder, Daniel Nevin, Josh Reese, Bill Salter Jan 2008

The Influence Of Dose Grid Resolution On Beam Selection Strategies In Radiotherapy Treatment Design, Ryan Acosta, Matthias Ehrgott, Allen G. Holder, Daniel Nevin, Josh Reese, Bill Salter

Mathematics Faculty Research

The design of a radiotherapy treatment includes the selection of beam angles (geometry problem), the computation of a fluence pattern for each selected beam angle (intensity problem), and finding a sequence of configurations of a multilef collimator to deliver the treatment (realization problem). While many mathematical optimization models and algorithms have been proposed for the intensity problem and (to a lesser extent) the realization problem, this is not the case for the geometry problem. In clinical practice, beam directions are manually selected by a clinician and are typically based on the clinician’s experience. Solving the beam selection problem optimally is …

Functionalism, Curtis Brown Jan 2008

Functionalism, Curtis Brown

Philosophy Faculty Research

The term functionalism has been used in at least three different senses in the social sciences. In the philosophy of mind, functionalism is a view about the nature of mental states. In sociology and anthropology, functionalism is an approach to understanding social processes in terms of their contribution to the operation of a social system. In psychology, functionalism was an approach to mental phenomena which emphasized mental processes as opposed to static mental structures.

Lack Of Assortative Mating For Tail, Body Size, Or Condition In The Elaborate Monomorphic Turquoise-Browed Motmot (Eumomota Superciliosa), Troy G. Murphy Jan 2008

Lack Of Assortative Mating For Tail, Body Size, Or Condition In The Elaborate Monomorphic Turquoise-Browed Motmot (Eumomota Superciliosa), Troy G. Murphy

Biology Faculty Research

Elaborate male and female plumage can be maintained by mutual sexual selection and function as a mate-choice or status signal in both sexes. Both male and female Turquoise-browed Motmot (Eumomota superciliosa) have long tails that terminate in widened blue-and-black rackets that appear to hang, unattached, below the body of the bird. I tested whether mutual sexual selection maintains the Turquoise-browed Motmot’s elaborate tail plumage by testing the prediction that mating occurs in an assortative manner for tail plumage. I also tested whether assortative mating occurs for body size, a potential measure of dominance, and for phenotypic condition, a …

Molt And Aging Criteria For Four North American Grassland Passerines, Peter Pyle, Stephanie L. Jones, Janet M. Ruth Jan 2008

Molt And Aging Criteria For Four North American Grassland Passerines, Peter Pyle, Stephanie L. Jones, Janet M. Ruth

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Prairie and grassland habitats in central and western North America have declined substantially since settlement by Europeans (Knopf 1994) and many of the birds and other organisms that inhabit North American grasslands have experienced steep declines (Peterjohn and Sauer 1999; Johnson and Igl 1997; Sauer, Hines, and Fallon 2007). The species addressed here, Sprague’s Pipit (Anthus spragueii), Grasshopper (Ammodramus savannarum) and Baird’s (A. bairdii) sparrows, and Chestnut-collared Longspurs (Calcarius ornatus), are grassland birds that are of special conservation concern throughout their ranges due to declining populations and the loss of the specific …
