Childhood Obesity And Depression, Leslie N. Horton Jan 2008

Childhood Obesity And Depression, Leslie N. Horton

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Obesity is a commonly experienced health issue. Children who suffer from obesity may experience medical concerns such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension (American Obesity Association, 2006). Obese children may also face psychological consequences. An overweight child may experience criticism from peers while finding it difficult to participate in age-related activities. Considering this fact, one can understand why psychological effects of childhood obesity are of concern. The purpose of this study is to examine the links between obesity and childhood depression, rated by the Childhood Depression Inventory (CDI-2). Twenty-nine children were administered the CDI-2. Activity level and age of children …

The Function And Mechanism Of Chmp1a In Tumor Development, Jing Li Jan 2008

The Function And Mechanism Of Chmp1a In Tumor Development, Jing Li

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Chmp1A (Chromatin modifying protein 1A/Charged multivesicular protein 1A) is a member of the ESCRT-III (Endosomal Sorting Complex Required for Transport) family, which mediates trafficking via MVB (multivesicular body) formation and sorting. Our studies suggest that Chmp1A is a novel tumor suppressor, especially in the pancreas. Knockdown of Chmp1A resulted in an increase of anchorage-independent growth of HEK 293T cells. Moreover, we showed that Chmp1A depleted HEK 293T cells forms tumor in xenograft mice. Knockdown of Chmp1A in PanC-1 cells promoted cell growth. In contrast, Doxycycline induced over-expression of Chmp1A in pancreatic cancer cells (PanC-1) resulted in cell growth inhibition, tumor …

Assembly And Function Of Myosin Ii On Ultraviolet/Ozone Patterned Trimethylchlorosilane Substrates, Madhukar B. Kolli

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The exploration of biomolecular motors in nanotechnological applications has generated much interest in the scientific community. Although the recent progress has been very promising, several requirements have yet to be fulfilled in order for motor proteins to be useful in nanotechnological applications. Here, we present a simple method for patterning myosin II on a microstructured surface. Our findings indicate that UV/ozone treatment can be used to alter the hydrophobicity of trimethyl-chloro-silane (TMCS) coated glass surfaces, to alter protein binding, and effectively produce localized motor activity. Taken together, these data suggest that photoreactive patterning may be useful for the selective localization …

Effects Of Aging And Gender On Regulators Of Muscle Adaptation In F344/Bn Rat Model, Satyanarayana Paturi Jan 2008

Effects Of Aging And Gender On Regulators Of Muscle Adaptation In F344/Bn Rat Model, Satyanarayana Paturi

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Sarcopenia is the loss of muscle mass and strength that occurs with aging. Here we examine the effects of aging and gender on the regulation of molecules believed to regulate muscle growth and adaptation in the F344/BN rat. In male animals, soleus and EDL muscle/body weight ratio declined continuously with aging while muscle atrophy in female animals plateaued at 26-months and remained constant thereafter. Aging increased the phosphorylation of protein kinase-B (Akt) and the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) in the female but not male soleus muscle. This finding was associated with the attenuation of muscle atrophy observed in female …

West Virginia Streamside Salamander Guilds And Environmental Variables With An Emphasis On Pseudotriton Ruber Ruber, Kathryn Rebecca Pawlik Jan 2008

West Virginia Streamside Salamander Guilds And Environmental Variables With An Emphasis On Pseudotriton Ruber Ruber, Kathryn Rebecca Pawlik

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Amphibian distributions are greatly influenced by environmental variables, due in part to semi-permeable skin which makes amphibians susceptible to both desiccation and toxin absorption. This study was conducted to determine which streamside salamander species were sympatric and how environmental variables may have influenced habitat choices. One hundred sixty streams were surveyed throughout 55 counties in West Virginia during the summer of 2007. At each site, a 10 m 2 quadrat was established around a central aquatic habitat. While surveying, I looked under natural cover objects, in vegetation, and through leaf litter. I recorded species, cover object type, and location on …

A Continued Study Of The Use Of Created Ponds For Amphibian Breeding In Fragmented Forested Areas, Amy Elizabeth Schneider

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Amphibian populations are declining worldwide due to factors such as habitat degradation, fragmentation and destruction. I conducted a study to explore the use of created ponds in a forested habitat by breeding amphibians, specifically Rana sylvatica and Ambystoma maculatum. The objectives were to examine the movement of these animals after leaving the ponds, the survival and movement of juveniles, how both respond to fragmentation, and how similar the created ponds were to natural ones. Nine ponds were constructed in December 2003 in the MeadWestvaco Wildlife Ecosystem Research Forest (MWERF) in Randolph County, West Virginia. All trapped amphibians were measured and …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Green Salamanders (Aneides aeneus) are the only salamanders in West Virginia to exhibit an arboreal lifestyle. The focus of this study was to determine the cellular anatomy of the distal digit structures and how these structures may influence climbing ability. Comparative histology, comparative morphometrics, and comparative osteology of Green Salamanders, Cumberland Plateau Salamanders (Plethodon kentucki), and Slimy Salamanders (Plethodon glutinosus), were also used to determine if Cumberland Plateau Salamanders had the potential to compete with Green Salamanders for arboreal habitats. Histologically, Cumberland Plateau Salamanders had cell layer thickening similar to that of Green Salamanders. Morphometrically, Green Salamanders and Cumberland Plateau …

Habitat Comparison Of Pseudacris F. Feriarum And Pseudacris C. Crucifer With Emphasis On Associated Plant Communities And Distribution Of Clemmys Guttata And Pseudacris F. Feriarum In West Virginia, Scott Joseph Albaugh Jan 2008

Habitat Comparison Of Pseudacris F. Feriarum And Pseudacris C. Crucifer With Emphasis On Associated Plant Communities And Distribution Of Clemmys Guttata And Pseudacris F. Feriarum In West Virginia, Scott Joseph Albaugh

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Upland Chorus Frogs (Pseudacris f. feriarum) are a rare species in West Virginia. They occur in aquatic habitats across parts of the eastern and southern U.S. Pseudacris f. feriarum collection records in West Virginia suggest that their distribution is limited to the eastern panhandle and Ridge and Valley region where they are very rare and imperiled. Distribution information is needed for future management strategies. To help conserve this rare species, key life history habits were identified through the investigation of plant communities that are associated with them. Data on Pseudacris f. feriarum distribution in West Virginia was determined by conducting …

Manganese Superoxide Dismutase Contributes To Cisplatin-Induced Cytotoxicity Rather Than All-Trans Retinoic Acid-Dependent Chemoresistance, Zina-Ann Cardozo

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Neuroblastoma is an extra-cranial solid tumor of the nervous system occurring predominantly in infants and children younger than five years of age. Neuroblastoma presents a challenge to therapy primarily due to a decreased responsiveness to anticancer agents like cisplatin (CDDP), leading to recurrence. Vitamin A and its derivatives, known as retinoids, are preventive against cancer and induce differentiation in some cell lines. Retinoids are now being tested clinically for the treatment of neuroblastoma. One major limitation to retinoid therapy is the development of chemoresistance. In the present study human SK-N-SH neuroblastoma cells pretreated with 10 μM all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) …

Results produced a significant, positive correlation between DIBELS …

Identification And Analysis Of Prohibitin In B16 Mouse Melanoma Cells, Christopher Francis Jan 2008

Identification And Analysis Of Prohibitin In B16 Mouse Melanoma Cells, Christopher Francis

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Prohibitin, a highly conserved protein found in eukaryotic cells, has been found in recent years to possess a wide variety of functions in the cell. Whereas the mechanisms by which the protein functions are still largely unknown, it is clear that prohibitin possesses very strong anti-proliferative properties in the cell, as well as potentially both nuclear and mitochondrial functions based upon its movement and localization upon apoptotic signaling. Upon treatment with retinoic acid, transformed B16 mouse melanoma cells also indicate a differential expression of prohibitin in which production of the protein is increased. The purpose of this work was to …

Utilizing The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Explain Suicidal Intent, Pamela R. George Jan 2008

Utilizing The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Explain Suicidal Intent, Pamela R. George

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Suicide has become a national and global problem, with the prevalence of suicide attempts increasing in recent years (Brown, Henriques, Sosdjan, & Beck, 2004; Kessler, Borges, & Walters, 1999). Even though research on suicide has identified risk factors and demographic characteristics to help aid in predicting who is at risk for attempting suicide, predictive models of intent of suicide have been unsuccessful in identifying particular individuals at risk of eventually dying by suicide (Cassells, Paterson, Dowding, & Morrison, 2005; Goldstein, Black, & Nasrallah, 1991; Powell, Geddes, Deeks, Goldacre, & Hawton, 2000). The purpose of this study is to propose an …

Impaired Overload-Induced Hypertrophy In Obese Zucker Rat Slow-Twitch Skeletal Muscle, Anil Kumar Gutta Jan 2008

Impaired Overload-Induced Hypertrophy In Obese Zucker Rat Slow-Twitch Skeletal Muscle, Anil Kumar Gutta

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

How insulin resistant muscle responds to mechanical overload (MOV) is not well understood. Using immunohistochemical analysis and immunoblotting, we investigated whether Lean Zucker (LZ) and insulin resistant Obese Zucker rats (OZ) respond in a similar fashion to MOV. Five young adult (2 months old) male LZ and OZ rats were subjected to a surgical ablation of the gastrocnemius muscle and overloaded for 8 weeks. MOV-induced increases in soleus muscle mass and average fiber cross-sectional area were attenuated in OZ compared to LZ animals. This reduction in OZ muscle adaptation was associated with decreased activity / phosphorylation levels of STAT3, β-catenin …

Writing The Wrongs : A Comparison Of Two Female Slave Narratives, Miya Hunter-Willis Jan 2008

Writing The Wrongs : A Comparison Of Two Female Slave Narratives, Miya Hunter-Willis

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis compares slave narratives written by Mattie J. Jackson and Kate Drumgoold. Both narrators recalled incidents that showed how slavery and the environment during the Reconstruction period created physical and psychological obstacles for women. Each narrator challenged the Cult of True Womanhood by showing that despite the stereotypes created to keep them subordinate there were African American women who successfully used their knowledge of white society to circumvent a system that tried to keep their race enslaved. Despite the 30 years that separate the publication of these two narratives, the legacy of education attainment emerges as a key part …

A Study On The Population Size And Natural History Of The Eastern Six‐Lined Racerunner, Aspidoscelis Sexlineata, In West Virginia, With Notes On Other Lizard Species, Emmy Johnson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Species will expand ranges through natural or human‐alterations. Such an occurrence has happened in West Virginia with Eastern Six‐lined Racerunner, Aspidsocelis sexlineata, a species that has been found to thrive in areas of high disturbance from humans. While found abundantly in other states, they are thought to occur only in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia (Morgan County) where they are believed to have come from Maryland via a railroad bridge. Without the bridge, the Potomac River forms a natural barrier between these two states. The objectives of my study were to determine the population size and natural history …

Managing Radical Disputes: Public Reason, The American Dream, And The Case Of Same-Sex Marriage, Keith J. Bybee, Cyril Ghosh Jan 2008

Managing Radical Disputes: Public Reason, The American Dream, And The Case Of Same-Sex Marriage, Keith J. Bybee, Cyril Ghosh

College of Law - Faculty Scholarship

This paper proposes that ambiguous arguments play a crucial role in the management of radical disputes in democratic deliberation. Lofty though it might be, public reason is an impoverished ideal, and its celebrated role in democratic deliberation is vastly overrated, particularly among liberal theorists. In the courts of law and in the larger world, radical disputes unfold as messy, incomplete, ambiguous arguments are proposed by parties. This does not mean that all communication between parties must break down because parties do not abide by the rules of argumentation and evidentiary reasoning. It only implies that the language of ambiguity offers …

A Method For Determining Stokes Flow Around Particles Near A Wall Or In A Thin Film Bounded By A Wall And A Gas-Liquid Interface, Ashok S. Sangani, Shailesh S. Ozarkar Jan 2008

A Method For Determining Stokes Flow Around Particles Near A Wall Or In A Thin Film Bounded By A Wall And A Gas-Liquid Interface, Ashok S. Sangani, Shailesh S. Ozarkar

Biomedical and Chemical Engineering - All Scholarship

A method for determining Stokes flow around particles near a wall or in a thin film bounded by a wall on one side and a nondeformable gas-liquid interface on the other side is developed. The no-slip boundary conditions at the wall are satisfied by constructing an image system based on Lamb’s multipoles. Earlier results for the image systems for the flow due to a point force or a force dipole are extended to image systems for force or source multipoles of arbitrary orders. For the case of a film, the image system consists of an infinite series of multipoles on …

Sites Of Contention And Critical Thinking In The Elementary Art Classroom: A Political Cartooning Project, James Haywood Rolling Jan 2008

Sites Of Contention And Critical Thinking In The Elementary Art Classroom: A Political Cartooning Project, James Haywood Rolling

Teaching and Leadership - All Scholarship

In this paper, the author explores the concept of childhood as a social category that impedes the perception of youngsters as critical thinkers in a visual culture. The author interrogates regularities within contemporary public schooling that work to represent the intellectual and cultural development of youngsters as the project of adult industry. Contrary to this representation, the author recounts the critical awareness and personal agency exercised by a group of 4th graders who engaged in a political cartooning exercise while examining the theme of social justice. The article includes an examination of the social construction of the concept of childhood …

Metaphysics Without Pre-Critical Monism: Hegel On Lower-Level Natural Kinds And The Structure Of Reality, James Kreines Jan 2008

Metaphysics Without Pre-Critical Monism: Hegel On Lower-Level Natural Kinds And The Structure Of Reality, James Kreines

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

My focus here is on what Hegel has to say about nature and natural kinds, in ‘Observing Reason’ from the Phenomenology, and also in similar material from the Logic and Encyclopedia. I intend to argue that this material suggests a surprising way of stepping beyond the fundamental debate. There can of course be no question of elaborating and defending here a complete interpretation of Hegel’s entire theoretical philosophy. I will have to restrict myself to arguing for the unlikely conclusion that there is an approach that can combine and integrate the strongest points made by both sides in …

Studying Gene Function In Caenorhabditis Elegans Using Rna-Mediated Interference, Eleanor M. Maine

Biology - All Scholarship

The RNA interference (RNAi) method for targeted gene silencing is widely used in Caenorhabditis elegans for large-scale functional genomic studies, analysis of limited gene sets and detailed analysis of individual gene function. The application of RNAi has identified genes that participate in various aspects of development, physiology and cell biology. In addition, RNAi has been used to identify interacting genes and to study functionally redundant genes. This review discusses the various applications of RNAi in C. elegans, focusing particularly on the analysis of developmental processes.
