Oligocene Deep Water Export From The North Atlantic And The Development Of The Antarctic Circumpolar Current Examined With Neodymium Isotopes, Howie Scher, Ellen E. Martin

Faculty Publications

Neodymium (Nd) isotopes were measured on 181 samples of fossil fish teeth recovered from Oligocene toMiocene sections at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1090 (3700 m water depth) on Agulhas Ridge in the Atlanticsector of the Southern Ocean. A long-term decreasing trend toward less radiogenic Nd isotope compositionsdominates the record. This trend is interrupted by shifts toward more radiogenic compositions near the early/lateOligocene boundary and the Oligocene/Miocene boundary. Overall, eNd values at Agulhas Ridge are moreradiogenic than at other Atlantic locations, and are similar to those at Indian Ocean locations. The pattern ofvariability is remarkably similar to Nd isotope results from …

Temporal Variations In Physical And Chemical Features Of Cryoconite Holes On Canada Glacier, Mcmurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, Andrew G. Fountain, Thomas H. Nylen, Martyn Tranter, Elizabeth A. Bagshaw

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cryoconite holes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys are ice-lidded, thus isolating the pools of water from the atmosphere and from potential surface melt. Hourly measurements of ice and water temperature and water electrical conductivity (EC) were recorded to broadly characterize the physical and chemical changes on daily to seasonal timescales. Overall, subsurface ice/water temperatures were typically several degrees warmer than air temperatures, underscoring the importance of subsurface solar heating. At no time was surface melt observed and the holes melted from within. Detailed differences in the timing and magnitude of both temperature and EC variations during melt-out and freezeup existed …

Statistical Methods For Automated Drug Susceptibility Testing: Bayesian Minimum Inhibitory Concentration Prediction From Growth Curves, Xi Zhou, Merlise A. Clyde, James Garrett, Viridiana Lourdes, Michael O'Connell, Giovanni Parmigiani, David J. Turner, Tim Wiles

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of a drug that prevents microbial growth is an important step for managing patients with infections. In this paper, we present a novel probabilistic approach that accurately estimates MICs based on a panel of multiple curves reflecting features of bacterial growth. We develop a probabilistic model for determining whether a given dilution of an antimicrobial agent is the MIC given features of the growth curves over time. Because of the potentially large collection of features, we utilize Bayesian model selection to narrow the collection of predictors to the most important variables. In addition …

Archaeal ATP synthase (A-ATPase) is the functional homolog to the ATP synthase found in bacteria, mitochondria and chloroplasts, but the enzyme is structurally more related to the proton-pumping vacuolar ATPase found in the endomembrane system of eukaryotes. We have cloned, overexpressed and characterized the stator-forming subunits E and H of the A-ATPase from the thermoacidophilic Archaeon, Thermoplasma acidophilum. Size exclusion chromatography, CD, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopic experiments indicate that both polypeptides have a tendency to form dimers and higher oligomers in solution. However, when expressed together or reconstituted, the two individual polypeptides interact with …

Singh, Sangeeta Bafna, Kunal Chaudhary, Ganesh Venkatraman, Lynette Smith, James D. Eudy, Sonny L. Johansson, Ming-Fong Lin, Surinder K. Batra

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Previously, we have developed a unique in vitro LNCaP cell model, which includes androgen-dependent (LNCaP-C33), androgen-independent (LNCaP-C81) and an intermediate phenotype (LNCaP-C51) cell lines resembling the stages of prostate cancer progression to hormone independence. This model is advantageous in overcoming the heterogeneity associated with the prostate cancer up to a certain extent. We characterized and compared the gene expression profiles in LNCaP-C33 (androgen-dependent) and LNCaP-C81 (androgen-independent) cells using Affymetrix GeneChip array analyses. Multiple genes were identified exhibiting differential expression during androgen-independent progression. Among the important genes upregulated in androgen-independent cells were PCDH7, TPTE, TSPY, EPHA3, HGF, MET, EGF, TEM8, etc., …

Pioglitazone Inhibition Of Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Nitric Oxide Synthase Is Associated With Altered Activity Of P38 Map Kinase And Pi3k/Akt, Bin Xing, Tao Xin, Randy Lee Hunter, Guoying Bing

Neuroscience Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-gamma)-mediated neuroprotection involves inhibition of microglial activation and decreased expression and activity of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS); however, the underlying molecular mechanisms have not yet been well established. In the present study we explored: (1) the effect of the PPAR-gamma agonist pioglitazone on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced iNOS activity and nitric oxide (NO) generation by microglia; (2) the differential role of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK), c-Jun NH(2)-terminal kinase (JNK), and phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) on LPS-induced NO generation; and (3) the regulation of p38 MAPK, JNK, and PI3K by pioglitazone. …

Opportunities And Roadblocks In Utilizing Forages And Small Grains For Liquid Fuels, Gautam Sarath, Robert B. Mitchell, S. E. Sattler, Deanna L. Funnell, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, Robert A. Graybosch, Kenneth P. Vogel

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

This review focuses on the potential advantages and disadvantages of forages such as switchgrass (Panicum virgatum), and two small grains: sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), and wheat (Triticum aesitvum), as feedstocks for biofuels. It highlights the synergy provided by applying what is known from forage digestibility and wheat and sorghum starch properties studies to the biofuels sector. Opportunities therefore, exist to improve biofuel qualities in these crops via genetics and agronomics. In contrast to cereal crops, switchgrass still retains tremendous exploitable genetic diversity, and can be specifically improved to Wt a particular agronomic, management, and conversion …

Analysis Of Glycerol 3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase And Sarco/Endoplasmic Reticulum Calcium Ion Channel Atpase For Use In Deep Metazoan Phylogenetics, Terry G. Campbell Jan 2008

Analysis Of Glycerol 3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase And Sarco/Endoplasmic Reticulum Calcium Ion Channel Atpase For Use In Deep Metazoan Phylogenetics, Terry G. Campbell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Genetic sequence data have been widely used to analyze metazoan phylogenies for two decades, and numerous datasets have been generated for testing relationships at many different taxonomic levels. The rapid divergence of major metazoan body plans during the Cambrian explosion confounds the determination of phylogenetic relationships among metazoan phyla. Few molecular analyses at this level have used both multiple genes and broad taxonomic representation. Furthermore, most studies have relied exclusively on the small ribosomal subunit rRNA gene (SSU). Many of the other genes that have been examined have possessed substitution rates that are inappropriate for resolving the relationships among metazoan …

A Neuroanatomically Grounded Hebbian-Learning Model Of Attention-Language Interactions In The Human Brain., Max Garagnani, Thomas Wennekers, Friedemann Pulvermüller

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Meaningful familiar stimuli and senseless unknown materials lead to different patterns of brain activation. A late major neurophysiological response indexing 'sense' is the negative component of event-related potential peaking at around 400 ms (N400), an event-related potential that emerges in attention-demanding tasks and is larger for senseless materials (e.g. meaningless pseudowords) than for matched meaningful stimuli (words). However, the mismatch negativity (latency 100-250 ms), an early automatic brain response elicited under distraction, is larger to words than to pseudowords, thus exhibiting the opposite pattern to that seen for the N400. So far, no theoretical account has been able to reconcile …
