John Dewey “On The Side Of The Angels”: A Critique Of Kestenbaum’S Phenomenological Reading Of A Common Faith, Shane J. Ralston Jan 2008

John Dewey “On The Side Of The Angels”: A Critique Of Kestenbaum’S Phenomenological Reading Of A Common Faith, Shane J. Ralston

Education and Culture

In chapter eight of The Grace and the Severity of the Ideal, Victor Kestenbaum disputes the naturalistic-instrumentalist reading of John Dewey’s A Common Faith. Rather than accept the orthodox reading, he challenges mainstream Dewey scholars to read Dewey’s theism from a phenomenological perspective. From this vantage, Kestenbaum contends that Dewey was wagering on transcendence, gambling on an ideal realm of supersensible entities, and hoping that the payoff would be universal acknowledgement of “a widening of the place of transcendence and faith in every area of his philosophy.” In a long-neglected correspondence between John Dewey and Albert Balz, Dewey responds to …

Dewey, Women, And Weirdoes: Or, The Potential Rewards For Scholars Who Dialog Across Difference, Craig A. Cunningham, David Granger, Jane Fowler Morse, Barbara S. Stengel, Terri S. Wilson Jan 2008

Dewey, Women, And Weirdoes: Or, The Potential Rewards For Scholars Who Dialog Across Difference, Craig A. Cunningham, David Granger, Jane Fowler Morse, Barbara S. Stengel, Terri S. Wilson

Education and Culture

This symposium provides five case studies of the ways that John Dewey's philosophy and practice were influenced by women or "weirdoes" (our choices include F.M. Alexander, Albert Barnes, Helen Bradford Thompson, Elsie Riply Clapp, and Jane Addams) and presents some conclusions about the value of dialoging across difference for philosophers and other scholars.

My Right To Learn, Marcy Cockrell Jan 2008

My Right To Learn, Marcy Cockrell

Reason and Respect

If books and other media are thought to be connected with terrorism, yet the government does not release a list of such material or inform individuals that they are under suspicion, can students truly feel free to learn, even at a university? Is a free flow of ideas truly possible in a place where only certain ideas are allowed? Is freedom of speech even relevant in a society where expression of certain thoughts or viewpoints is prohibited?

Validation Of A Spatially Continuous Eden Water-Surface Model For The Everglades, Florida, John C. Volin, Zhongwei Liu, Aaron Higer, Frank Mazzotti, Dianne Owen, Jenny Allen, Leonard Pearlstine

Department of Natural Resources and the Environment Articles

The Everglades Depth Estimation Network (EDEN) is an integrated network of realtime water-level monitoring, ground-elevation modeling, and water-surface modeling that provides scientists and managers with current (2000-present), online water-stage and water-depth information for the entire freshwater portion of the Greater Everglades. Continuous daily spatial interpolations of the EDEN network stage data are presented on grid with 400-square-meter spacing. EDEN offers a consistent and documented dataset that can be used by scientists and managers to: (1) guide large-scale field operations, (2) integrate hydrologic and ecological responses, and (3) support biological and ecological assessments that measure ecosystem responses to the implementation of …

A Scale Invariant Measure Of Clutter, Mary J. Bravo, Hany Farid Jan 2008

A Scale Invariant Measure Of Clutter, Mary J. Bravo, Hany Farid

Dartmouth Scholarship

We propose a measure of clutter for real images that can be used to predict search times. This measure uses an efficient segmentation algorithm (P. Felzenszwalb & D. Huttenlocher, 2004) to count the number of regions in an image. This number is not uniquely defined, however, because it varies with the scale of segmentation. The relationship between the number of regions and the scale of segmentation follows a power law, and the exponent of the power law is similar across images. We fit power law functions to the multiple scale segmentations of 160 images. The power law exponent was set …

Uses Of The Pseudomonas Syringae Effector Protein Hopu1 Related To Itsability To Adp-Rbosylate Eukaryotc Rna Binding Protens, James R. Alfano, Zheng Qing Fu, Thomas E. Elthon

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The bacterial plant pathogen Pseudomonas Syringae injects effector proteins into host cells via a type III protein secre tion system to cause disease. The invention relates to the discovery that the type III effector HopU1 is a mono-ADP ribosyltransferase (ADP-RT) and suppresses plant innate immunity. The HopU1 substrates in Arabidopsis thaliana extracts were RNA-binding proteins that possess RNA recognition motifs (RRMs). A. thaliana knock-out lines defective in the glycine-rich RNA-binding protein AtGRP7, a HopU1 substrate, were more susceptible than wild type plants to P syringae. The ADP-ribosylation of AtGRP7 by HopU1 required two arginines within the RRM. The inven tion …

Decomposition Of Bt And Non-Bt Corn Hybrid Residues In The Field, David D. Tarkalson, Stephen D. Kachman, Johannes M. H. Knops, Janice E. Thies, Charles S. Wortmann Jan 2008

Decomposition Of Bt And Non-Bt Corn Hybrid Residues In The Field, David D. Tarkalson, Stephen D. Kachman, Johannes M. H. Knops, Janice E. Thies, Charles S. Wortmann

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Results of a previous laboratory study indicated that six transgenic crops expressing the Cry1Ab insecticidal protein from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) decomposed at a slower rate than their respective non-Bt isolines. Consequently, litter decomposition rates, nitrogen cycling, and carbon pools may change in agricultural systems as the result of the widespread use of Bt crops. In this study, we assessed the decomposition rates and chemical composition of commonly grown hybrids of Bt and non-Bt isolines of corn (Zea mays L.) in the field. Leaves, stalks, and cobs from two Bt corn hybrids (Pioneer 34N44 Bt and NC+ 4990 Bt) and their …

Model Selection And Health Effect Estimation In Environmental Epidemiology, Francesca Dominici, Chi Wang, Ciprian Crainiceanu, Giovanni Parmigiani Jan 2008

Model Selection And Health Effect Estimation In Environmental Epidemiology, Francesca Dominici, Chi Wang, Ciprian Crainiceanu, Giovanni Parmigiani

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In air pollution epidemiology, improvements in statistical analysis tools can translate into significant scientific advances, because of the unfavorable signal-to-noise ratios, and large correlations between exposures and confounders. Therefore, the use of a novel model selection approach in identifying time windows of exposure to pollutants that lead to adverse health effects is important and welcome. However, previous literature has raised concerns about approaches that select a model based on a given data set, and then estimate health effects in the same data assuming that the chosen model is correct. Problems can be particularly severe when: 1) the sample size is …

Localized Bridging Centrality For Distributed Network Analysis, Soumendra Nanda, David Kotz Jan 2008

Localized Bridging Centrality For Distributed Network Analysis, Soumendra Nanda, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

Centrality is a concept often used in social network analysis to study different properties of networks that are modeled as graphs. We present a new centrality metric called Localized Bridging Centrality (LBC). LBC is based on the Bridging Centrality (BC) metric that Hwang et al. recently introduced. Bridging nodes are nodes that are located in between highly connected regions. LBC is capable of identifying bridging nodes with an accuracy comparable to that of the BC metric for most networks. As the name suggests, we use only local information from surrounding nodes to compute the LBC metric, while, global knowledge is …
