Study On The Binding Mode Of In(Bpy)Cl3·H2O With Dna By The Methods Of Electrochemistry, Jun-Wei Wang, Jian-Guo Ren, Bao-Juan Zhou, Xiao-Ling Gao, Yan-Ni Tian

Journal of Electrochemistry

The complex In(bpy)Cl3·H2O was synthesized. The binding mode of the complex with DNA was studied by the methods of cyclic voltammetry(CV),differential pulse voltammetry and ac impedance in the buffer Tris-HCl(pH=7.2).A quasi-reversible redox wave for the central Indium ion from the cyclic voltammograms was shown at a PG electrode. It has been found that after the complex acted with DNA,The complex's formal potential negatively shifted from-0.696 V to-0.717 V,the values of the reduction peak current and apparent diffusion coefficient decreased significantly. The results of differential pulse voltammetry were the same as cyclic voltammetry, and the electrochemical reaction resistance values increased from …

Biology Faculty Articles

We describe the establishment and analysis of a genus-wide comparative framework composed of 12 bacterial artificial chromosome fingerprint and end-sequenced physical maps representing the 10 genome types of Oryza aligned to the O. sativa ssp. japonica reference genome sequence. Over 932 Mb of end sequence was analyzed for repeats, simple sequence repeats, miRNA and single nucleotide variations, providing the most extensive analysis of Oryza sequence to date.

Enkephalin-Encoding Herpes Simplex Virus-1 Decreases Inflammation And Hotplate Sensitivity In A Chronic Pancreatitis Model, Hong Yang, Terry A. Mcnearney, Rong Chu, Ying Lu, Yong Ren, David C. Yeomans, Steven P. Wilson, Karin N. Westlund

Physiology Faculty Publications

Background: A chronic pancreatitis model was developed in young male Lewis rats fed a high-fat and alcohol liquid diet beginning at three weeks. The model was used to assess time course and efficacy of a replication defective herpes simplex virus type 1 vector construct delivering human cDNA encoding preproenkephalin (HSV-ENK).

Results: Most surprising was the relative lack of inflammation and tissue disruption after HSV-ENK treatment compared to the histopathology consistent with pancreatitis (inflammatory cell infiltration, edema, acinar cell hypertrophy, fibrosis) present as a result of the high-fat and alcohol diet in controls. The HSV-ENK vector delivered to the pancreatic surface …

The Reference Interview: Theories And Practice, Stephanie Willen Brown Feb 2008

The Reference Interview: Theories And Practice, Stephanie Willen Brown

Published Works

The reference librarian's task is to translate the patron's question into one that can be answered with the library's resources. The first element of that task is to know what the patron wants; the second is to know what resources the library has and how to use them. Reference librarians must learn continuously throughout their careers, both because new resources become available, but also because patrons present questions requiring new resources. This article will focus on how to determine what kind of information the patron needs through the reference interview.

The Anchor, Volume 121.16: February 27, 2008, Hope College

The Anchor: 2008

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Application Of Prodrugs To Inflammatory Diseases Of The Gut, Helieh S. Oz, Jeffrey L. Ebersole Feb 2008

Application Of Prodrugs To Inflammatory Diseases Of The Gut, Helieh S. Oz, Jeffrey L. Ebersole

Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications

Oral delivery is the most common and preferred route of drug administration although the digestive tract exhibits several obstacles to drug delivery including motility and intraluminal pH profiles. The gut milieu represents the largest mucosal surface exposed to microorganisms with 1010-12 colony forming bacteria/g of colonic content. Approximately, one third of fecal dry matter is made of bacteria/ bacterial components. Indeed, the normal gut microbiota is responsible for healthy digestion of dietary fibers (polysaccharides) and fermentation of short chain fatty acids such as acetate and butyrate that provide carbon sources (fuel) for these bacteria. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) results …

García-Cazarín, Jennifer L. Smith, Kyle A. Olszewski, Dan F. Mccune, Linda A. Simmerman, Robert W. Hadley, Susan D. Kraner, Michael T. Piascik

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: The cellular localization of the α1D-adrenergic receptor (α1D-AR) is controversial. Studies in heterologous cell systems have shown that this receptor is expressed in intracellular compartments. Other studies show that dimerization with other ARs promotes the cell surface expression of the α1D-AR. To assess the cellular localization in vascular smooth muscle cells, we developed an adenoviral vector for the efficient expression of a GFP labeled α1D-AR. We also measured cellular localization with immunocytochemistry. Intracellular calcium levels, measurement of reactive oxygen species and contraction of the rat aorta were used as measures of …

Effect Of Irrigation Amounts Applied With Subsurface Drip Irrigation On Corn Evapotranspiration, Yield, Water Use Efficiency, And Dry Matter Production In A Semiarid Climate, Jose O. Payero, David D. Tarkalson, Suat Irmak, Don Davison, James L. Petersen Feb 2008

Effect Of Irrigation Amounts Applied With Subsurface Drip Irrigation On Corn Evapotranspiration, Yield, Water Use Efficiency, And Dry Matter Production In A Semiarid Climate, Jose O. Payero, David D. Tarkalson, Suat Irmak, Don Davison, James L. Petersen

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Quantifying the local crop response to irrigation is important for establishing adequate irrigation management strategies. This study evaluated the effect of irrigation applied with subsurface drip irrigation on field corn (Zea mays L.) evapotranspiration (ETc), yield, water use efficiencies (WUE = yield/ETc, and IWUE = yield/irrigation), and dry matter production in the semiarid climate of west central Nebraska. Eight treatments were imposed with irrigation amounts ranging from 53 to 356 mmin 2005 and from 22 to 226mmin 2006. A soil water balance approach (based on FAO-56) was used to estimate daily soil water and ETc. Treatments resulted in seasonal …
