Ecology Of The Missouri River: Missouri River Creel Survey, Bellevue Bridge To Camp Creek, 31 March Through 12 October 2007. Supplement I, Gerald Mestl

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

This report describes Missouri River activities and results related to a channelized Missouri River creel survey conducted from 29 March through 10 October 2003. This is the fourth of a planned annual creel survey to be conducted on alternating sections of the channelized Missouri River to measure changes in recreational fishing activity, especially those changes due to large scale habitat restoration efforts. Future reports will contain additional analyses of these data.

Anglers spent over 30,000 hours fishing the Missouri River from Camp Creek (rk 883.5) to the Kansas state line (rk 790.2) during the survey period. Effort peaked during the …

Functional Interactions Of Alcohol-Sensitive Sites In The N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor M3 And M4 Domains, Hong Ren, Abdelghaffar K. Salous, Jaclyn M. Paul, Kaitlin A. Lamb, Donard S. Dwyer, Robert W. Peoples Mar 2008

Functional Interactions Of Alcohol-Sensitive Sites In The N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor M3 And M4 Domains, Hong Ren, Abdelghaffar K. Salous, Jaclyn M. Paul, Kaitlin A. Lamb, Donard S. Dwyer, Robert W. Peoples

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor is an important mediator of the behavioral effects of ethanol in the central nervous system. Previous studies have demonstrated sites in the third and fourth membrane-associated (M) domains of the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor NR2A subunit that influence alcohol sensitivity and ion channel gating. We investigated whether two of these sites, Phe-637 in M3 and Met-823 in M4, interactively regulate the ethanol sensitivity of the receptor by testing dual substitution mutants at these positions. A majority of the mutations decreased steady-state glutamate EC50 values and maximal steady-state to peak current ratios (Iss/I …

Victims, "Closure", And The Sociology Of Emotion, Susan A. Bandes Mar 2008

Victims, "Closure", And The Sociology Of Emotion, Susan A. Bandes

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

The concept of closure, almost unknown two decades ago, has had a meteoric rise. It has been enthusiastically embraced by the legal system not only as a legitimate psychological state, but as one that the criminal justice system ought to help victims and murder survivors to attain. In the death penalty context, the concept of closure has changed the way we talk about the rationale for capital punishment, it has changed the shape of the legal process, and it has even changed what both survivors and jurors in capital cases expect to feel. Yet, as I will illustrate, the term …

The Influence Of Metal Exposure History And Ultraviolet-B Radiation On Benthic Communities In Colorado Rocky Mountain Streams, Robert E. Zuellig, Donna R. Kashian, Marjorie L. Brooks, Peter M. Kiffney, William H. Clements Mar 2008

The Influence Of Metal Exposure History And Ultraviolet-B Radiation On Benthic Communities In Colorado Rocky Mountain Streams, Robert E. Zuellig, Donna R. Kashian, Marjorie L. Brooks, Peter M. Kiffney, William H. Clements

Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications

Interest in understanding the influence of ultraviolet-B (UVB; 280–320 nm) radiation in aquatic ecosystems has increased since the early 1990s. Pollution from historic mining operations coupled with physicochemical characteristics of Rocky Mountain streams that increase exposure of benthic communities to UVB provided an opportunity to examine how UVB interacted with heavy metal contamination to structure stream communities. We integrated a series of UVB addition experiments done in stream microcosms with a large-scale UVB shading experiment to test the hypothesis that effects of UVB were greater on benthic communities from metal-polluted streams than from reference streams. Microcosm experiments involved short-term exposure …

Legal Writing: Did Harvard Get It Right?, Laurel Currie Oates Mar 2008

Legal Writing: Did Harvard Get It Right?, Laurel Currie Oates

Mercer Law Review

For most law students, there is a moment when, in frustration or exhaustion, they throw up their hands and scream, "There must be a better way." While many of the cases in the casebooks are interesting, learning the law one case at a time seems, at best, inefficient, and at worst, just plain stupid. Wouldn't it be much easier, and better, if law schools used the same pedagogy that is used in many other disciplines: reading assignments, lectures, and exams that test whether students have learned the information set out in those textbooks and lectures?

When students question law school …

Teaching International Intellectual Property Law, Peter K. Yu Mar 2008

Teaching International Intellectual Property Law, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

Intellectual property law was in the backwater only a few decades ago. The Section on Intellectual Property Law of the Association of American Law Schools was not even founded until the early 1980s, and the creation of intellectual property specialty programs has been only a recent phenomenon. As senior legal scholars reminisce, early in their career, they would have been lucky to find a school that would allow them to teach a class on intellectual property law. Although intellectual property law teaching has come of age in the past decade, international intellectual property law courses remain nonexistent in more than …

Three Questions That Will Make You Rethink The U.S.-China Intellectual Property Debate, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

The debate on China's piracy and counterfeiting problems has been ongoing for more than two decades. However, in the past few years, this debate has taken on a new sense of urgency and significance. In August 2008, the City of Beijing will host the Summer Olympic Games. Two years later, the 2010 World Expo will be held in Shanghai. In addition, two World Trade Organization dispute settlement panels were recently established to resolve disputes between China and the United States over inadequate enforcement of intellectual property rights and inadequate market access to U.S. media products. All of these developments, of …

Earth Scientists And Public Policy: Have We Failed New Orleans?, Timothy H. Dixon, Roy K. Dokka

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Earth scientists rarely influence public policy or urban planning. In defiance of geologic reality, cities are established on or expanded into floodplains, wetlands, earthquake faults, and active volcanoes. One exception to our lack of influence is that shortly after a major natural disaster, there is a brief window of heightened public awareness that may lead to sensible regulation or relocation of infrastructure. After the 1933 Long Beach earthquake, for example, California building codes were improved to reduce earthquake hazard. After Mississippi River flooding in 1993, several U.S. cities designated parts of their low-lying flood-plain as green space.

Claudication Distances And The Walking Impairment Questionnaire Best Describe The Ambulatory Limitations In Patients With Symptomatic Peripheral Arterial Disease, Sara A. Myers, Jason Johanning, Nikolaos Stergiou, Thomas G. Lynch, G. Matthew Longo, Iraklis Pipinos

Journal Articles

Background

Claudication secondary to peripheral arterial disease leads to reduced mobility, limited physical functioning, and poor health outcomes. Disease severity can be assessed with quantitative clinical methods and qualitative self-perceived measures of quality of life. Limited data exist to document the degree to which quantitative and qualitative measures correlate. The current study provides data on the relationship between quantitative and qualitative measures of symptomatic peripheral arterial disease.

Method

This descriptive case series was set in an academic vascular surgery unit and biomechanics laboratory. The subjects were symptomatic patients with peripheral arterial disease patients presenting with claudication. The quantitative evaluation outcome …

The Territory Federal Jurisdiction Forgot: The Question Of Greater Federal Jurisdiction In American Samoa, Michael W. Weaver Mar 2008

The Territory Federal Jurisdiction Forgot: The Question Of Greater Federal Jurisdiction In American Samoa, Michael W. Weaver

Washington International Law Journal

The United States Territory of American Samoa is over 7000 miles from Washington, D.C., and that distance might explain the United States’ limited interest in the territory. The lack of interest has allowed American Samoa to maintain its unique cultural foundations. However, it has also kept American Samoa detached from the federal governmental structure, including the judicial system. In fact, a federal district court does not exist in American Samoa, nor has the territory been incorporated into a federal judicial district. A lack of a federal presence has not been a major issue until recently. In the last few years, …

Bactrocera invadens Drew, Tsuruta & White (Diptera: Tephritidae), an invasive fruit fly species of Asian origin, was detected in Kenya in 2003, and is now well established in several parts of the country. We assessed the host range of this major quarantine pest in Kenya by collecting a wide range of cultivated and wild host plants from December 2004 to April 2006. Fruit were collected from 90 plant species representing 40 families from the Coast, Eastern, and Rift Valley provinces of the country where the fly population had been observed to occur in large numbers and where fruit and vegetable …

The Virtues And Vices Of Equilibrium And The Future Of Financial Economics, J. Doyne Farmer, John Geanakoplos Mar 2008

The Virtues And Vices Of Equilibrium And The Future Of Financial Economics, J. Doyne Farmer, John Geanakoplos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The use of equilibrium models in economics springs from the desire for parsimonious models of economic phenomena that take human reasoning into account. This approach has been the cornerstone of modern economic theory. We explain why this is so, extolling the virtues of equilibrium theory; then we present a critique and describe why this approach is inherently limited, and why economics needs to move in new directions if it is to continue to make progress. We stress that this shouldn’t be a question of dogma, but should be resolved empirically. There are situations where equilibrium models provide useful predictions and …

Pvps And Qsas Opportunities To Addvalue To South Dakota Cattle, Russ Daly Mar 2008

Pvps And Qsas Opportunities To Addvalue To South Dakota Cattle, Russ Daly

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The opening of the export market to Japan for cattle less than 20 months of age is a potential opportunity for South Dakota cattle raisers to add value to their calf crop. In order to qualify for this market, calves need to be age verified through programs already in place through the USDA. In most cases, when cattle are age verified through birth dates, they are also verified to a particular source (or farm), thus the term “age and source verified.” Cattle that have been age and source verified may bring a premium in certain markets, but premiums are subject …

Micotoxinas En Granos De Destilería Una Preocupación En Rumiantes?, A. Garcia, K. Kalscheur, A. Hippen, D. Schingoethe

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The formation mechanisms of the barrier layer ( BL) and its seasonal variability in the Arabian Sea ( AS) are studied using a comprehensive dataset of temperature and salinity profiles from Argo and other archives for the AS. Relatively thick BL of 20-60 m with large spatial extent is found in the central-southwestern AS ( CSWAS), the convergence zone of the monsoon wind, during the peak summer monsoon ( July-August) and in the southeastern AS ( SEAS) and northeastern AS ( NEAS) during the winter ( January-February). Although the BL in the SEAS has been reported before, the observed thick …

Stressed And Happy? Investigating The Research Between Happiness And Perceived Stress, Holly H. Schiffrin, D. Rezendes, S. Katherine Nelson

Psychological Science Articles

Developing interventions to increase happiness is a major focus of the emerging field of positive psychology. Common beliefs about the need to reduce stress to obtain happiness suggest that stress management activities should be included in these interventions. However, the research on the relationship between positive and negative affect is equivocal. Theoretically, they are conceptualized as independent dimensions, but research has often found an inverse relationship between happiness and stress. In addition, the research generally attempts to assess stress objectively rather than in terms of the cognitive appraisal process. The current study examines the relationship between perceived stress and happiness among …
