Schizophrenia: A Concept, Haider A Naqvi Mar 2008

Schizophrenia: A Concept, Haider A Naqvi

Department of Psychiatry

Much of the current research-work into biological basis of mental disorders is predicted on implicit concept of disease that is less critical and sophisticated as it should be. It is remarkable, how the fundamental conceptual frame work of schizophrenia, as proposed by Professor Emil Kraepelin has stayed the same, since its inception almost 100-years ago. This review explores these issues besides highlighting alternative disease classification that suits behavioural neuroscience research.

Search For Potential Anticancer Agents: Evaluation Of Anticancer Activity Of Carcinosin, Apis And Thuja, Soma Samanta, A De, P Tarafder, Tarun Jha

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

As a part of our composite programme of rational drug discovery, homeopathic medicines Carcinosin, Apis and Thuja with different strengths were taken into consideration for anticancer activity to find out the effectiveness of these drugs in animal models. Here, we have reported the anticancer activity of Carcinosin of some strengths from a manufacturer where tumor cell count as well as tumor weight inhibition were considered as the biological activity parameters. Anticancer activity of all collected medicines of Carcinosin, Apis and Thuja were evaluated against another animal model considering the survival time as the biological activity parameter. Result showed that the …

The Political Economy Of Constitutional Choice: A Study Of The 2005 Kenyan Constitutional Referendum, Mwangi S. Kimenyi, William F. Shughart Mar 2008

The Political Economy Of Constitutional Choice: A Study Of The 2005 Kenyan Constitutional Referendum, Mwangi S. Kimenyi, William F. Shughart

Economics Working Papers

Recent studies of the linkages between the wealth of nations and the institutions of governance suggest that concentrating political power in a monarchy or a ruling coalition impedes economic growth and, moreover, that while power-diffusing reforms can enhance the wellbeing of society in general, opposition by groups benefitting from the status quo is predictable. In November 2005, Kenyans rejected a proposed constitution that, despite promises made by their new chief executive, would not have lessened the powers of the presidency. Using a unique, constituency-level dataset on the referendum vote, we estimate a model of the demand for power diffusion and …

A Facile And Efficient Synthesis Of Some (6e)-Hydroximino-4-En-3-One Steroids, Steroidal Oximes From Cinachyrella Spp. Sponges, Jianguo Cui, Liliang Huang, Lei Fan, Aimin Zhou Mar 2008

A Facile And Efficient Synthesis Of Some (6e)-Hydroximino-4-En-3-One Steroids, Steroidal Oximes From Cinachyrella Spp. Sponges, Jianguo Cui, Liliang Huang, Lei Fan, Aimin Zhou

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Using β-sitosterol as a starting material, (6E)-hydroximino-24-ethylcholest-4-en-3-one (1), a natural steroidal oxime from Cinachyrella alloclada and C. apion, was synthesized in four steps with a high overall yield. First, β-sitosterol (5a) is transformed into the corresponding 24-ethylcholest-4-en-3,6-dione (6a) via oxidation with pyridinium chlorochromate (PCC). Selective reduction of 6a by NaBH4 in the presence of CoCl2 gives 24-ethylcholest- 4-en-3β-ol-6-one (7a). The reaction of 7a with hydroxylamine hydrochloride offers the oxime 8a and the oxidation of 8a by Jones reagent gives the target steroid 1. (6E)-Hydroximinocholest-4-en-3-one (2) and (6E)-hydroximino-24-ethylcholest-4,22-dien-3-one (4) were synthesized by a similar method. The cytotoxicity of the synthesized compounds …

Gratiana Boliviana (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Does Not Feed On Jamaican Nightshade Solanum Jamaicense (Solanaceae), W. A. Overholt, R. Diaz, L. Markle, J. Medal

Faculty Publications

Jamaican nightshade has been in Florida for at least 77 years, but is considered rare and only found in 4 counties in the central peninsula. However, there are many examples of long lag periods between the time an exotic plant arrives at a new location, and the time it spreads and becomes highly invasive (Sakai et al. 2001). Locally dense populations of Jamaican nightshade in hammock areas in Saint Lucie and Osceola counties suggest that the plant is adapted to at least some habitats in Florida, and could eventually spread to similar habitats and become a serious exotic invader. The …

Application Of Hptlc In The Standardization Of A Homoeopathic Mother Tincture Of Nux Vomica, D Shanbhag, Sunita Jayaraman

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

In this study,we have chosen HPTLC (High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography) as a method of analysis to develop a standard procedure based on fingerprinting characteristics for the evaluation of homreopathic formulations. A simple and accurate HPTLC method has been developed for the quantification of brucine, one of the chief active chemical components of Nux vomica (along with strychnine),and the fingerprinting of the in-house mother tincture of Nux vomica, considered here to be a standard, with that of different marketed samples available from manufacturers of homreopathic medicines in India. This HPTLC method was quantitatively evaluated in terms of stability, repeatability, and accuracy.

A ‘Dual’-Improved Shortcut To The Long Run, Kareen Rozen Mar 2008

A ‘Dual’-Improved Shortcut To The Long Run, Kareen Rozen

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

I use the theories of duality and optimal branchings to find a necessary and sufficient characterization of stochastically stable limit sets (SSLS) that helps improve the radius — modified coradius test of Ellison (2000). The improved shortcut I offer may permit the identification of SSLS when Ellison’s radius — modified coradius test fails to identify any, or may be able to pinpoint the true SSLS in cases where Ellison’s test identifies only a superset. I also demonstrate precisely why the radius — modified coradius test is not universally applicable and illuminate the connection between the modified coradius and the Lagrange …

Insights Into Morphological Nature Of Precipitation Of Cholesterol, Vuk Uskoković Mar 2008

Insights Into Morphological Nature Of Precipitation Of Cholesterol, Vuk Uskoković

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Additional effects on the previously reported procedure of precipitation of narrowly dispersed and well-defined, brick-shaped cholesterol particles, including non-solvent addition rate, temperature, solvent purity, aging treatments, ultrasound agitation and fine mechanical effects were investigated. Based on the presented results, significant morphological sensitivity of cholesterol precipitation processes upon variations from the standard established procedure of crystallization is induced. However, the tendency of cholesterol to crystallize in the form of biaxially grown particles was evidenced as dominating the precipitation processes, irrespective of any modifications of experimental parameters involved in the preparation procedure investigated hereby. Prolonged aging time and temperature effects lead to …

Characterization Of Zirconium Nitride Films Sputter Deposited With An Extensive Range Of Nitrogen Flow Rates, N. Farkas, G. Zhang, R. D. Ramsier, Edward A. Evans, J. A. Dagata

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

ZrNx films are deposited by rf magnetron sputtering using a wide range of nitrogen flow rates to control film properties. Scanned probe microscope (SPM) oxidation is presented as a complimentary characterization tool to x-ray diffraction, colorimetric, and four point probe analyses. The SPM oxidation behavior of the ZrNx films is related to their structural, optical, and electrical properties. Whereas stoichiometric ZrN films have applications as protective and/or decorative coatings, ZrNx films sputtered with higher nitrogen flow rates have potential applications in devices where arrays of high aspect ratio nanostructures would be useful. Determination Of Enantiomeric Compositions Of Analytes Using Novel Fluorescent Chiral Molecular Micelles And Steady State Fluorescence Measurements, Alicia A. Williams, Sayo O. Fakayode, Onur Alptürk, Christina M. Jones, Mark Lowry, Robert M. Strongin, Isiah M. Warner

Faculty Publications

Novel fluorescent chiral molecular micelles (FCMMs) were synthesized, characterized, and employed as chiral selectors for enantiomeric recognition of non-fluorescent chiral molecules using steady state fluorescence spectroscopy. The sensitivity of the fluorescence technique allowed for investigation of low concentrations of chiral selector (3.0∈×∈10 -5 M) and analyte (5.0∈×∈10 -6 M) to be used in these studies. The chiral interactions of glucose, tartaric acid, and serine in the presence of FCMMs poly(sodium N-undecanoyl-l-tryptophanate) [poly-l-SUW], poly(sodium N-undecanoyl-l-tyrosinate) [poly-l-SUY], and poly(sodium N-undecanoyl-l- phenylalininate) [poly-SUF] were based on diastereomeric complex formation. Poly-l-SUW had a significant fluorescence emission spectral difference as compared to poly-l-SUY and poly-l-SUF …

Lejeune, Jie Ren Li, Brian R. Lewandowski, Wilson K. Serem, Stephanie L. Daniels, Kathie L. Lusker, Jayne C. Garno

Faculty Publications

Nanografting is a high-precision approach for scanning probe lithography, which provides unique advantages and capabilities for rapidly writing arrays of nanopatterns of thiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Nanografting is accomplished by force-induced displacement of molecules of a matrix SAM, followed immediately by the self-assembly of n-alkanethiol ink molecules from solution. The feedback loop used to control the atomic force microscope tip position and displacement enables exquisite control of forces applied to the surface, ranging from pico to nanonewtons. To achieve high-resolution writing at the nanoscale, the writing speed, direction, and applied force need to be optimized. There are strategies for programing …

Collpas: Activity Hotspots For Frugivorous Bats (Phyllostomidae) In The Peruvian Amazon, Adriana Bravo, Kyle E. Harms, Richard D. Stevens, Louise H. Emmons

Faculty Publications

In the SE Peruvian Amazon, large numbers of frugivorous bats regularly visit natural forest clearings known locally as collpas (which are also referred to as clay licks or mineral licks). Bats arrive at collpas to drink water that has accumulated in depressions created by larger geophagous mammals that consume exposed soil. Although collpa visitation is common, little is known about its causes and its ecological implications for the bat community. We compared patterns of use of collpas and non-collpa forest sites by bats in SE Peru. We mist netted bats at collpas and non-collpa sites during the dry season and …

Silwet L-77, an organosilicone adjuvant, was used to enhance coverage of an entomopathogenic fungus in field trials conducted in a central Florida citrus research grove. The results indicated that Silwet L-77, by itself, was toxic to nymphs of the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae). Laboratory bioassays were conducted to confirm the toxicity of the adjuvant to eggs, nymphs, and adults of D. citri. Silwet L-77 at 0.05% (500 ppm) killed all nymphs, but was not as effective against eggs and adults. However, Silwet L-77, when combined with a reduced rate (one-tenth the lowest label rate = LLR) …

We describe a revised and expanded database on human intermediate filament proteins, a major component of the eukaryotic cytoskeleton. The family of 70 intermediate filament genes (including those encoding keratins, desmins, and lamins) is now known to be associated with a wide range of diverse diseases, at least 72 distinct human pathologies, including skin blistering, muscular dystrophy, cardiomyopathy, premature aging syndromes, neurodegenerative disorders, and cataract. To date, the database catalogs 1,274 manually-curated pathogenic sequence variants and 170 allelic variants in intermediate filament genes from over 459 peer-reviewed research articles. Unrelated cases were collected from all of the six sequence homology …

The Female Body In Margaret Atwood’S The Edible Woman And Lady Oracle, Sofia Sanchez-Grant Mar 2008

The Female Body In Margaret Atwood’S The Edible Woman And Lady Oracle, Sofia Sanchez-Grant

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay examines scholarly discourses about embodiment, and their increasing scholarly currency, in relation to two novels by the Canadian writer Margaret Atwood. Like many of Atwood’s other works, The Edible Woman (1969) and Lady Oracle (1976) are explicitly concerned with the complexities of body image. More specifically, however, these novels usefully exemplify her attempt to demystify the female form. In the following pages, I investigate Atwood’s treatment of the mind/body dualism and analyse the ways in which she responds to, and resists, its destructive effects. Using contemporary theory, moreover, I show how Atwood deals with the concept of female …

Family Burden Of Compulsive Hoarding: Results Of An Internet Survey, David F. Tolin, Randy O. Frost, Gail Steketee, Kristin E. Fitch

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Compulsive hoarding, the acquisition of and failure to discard large numbers of possessions, is associated with substantial health risk, impairment in functioning, and economic burden. Despite clear indications that hoarding has a detrimental effect on people living with or near someone with a hoarding problem, no empirical research has examined these harmful effects. The aim of the present study was to examine the burden of hoarding on family members. Six hundred sixty-five family informants who reported having a family member or friend with hoarding behaviors completed an internet-based survey. Living with an individual who hoards during childhood was associated with …

The Colonel's Finest Campaign: Robert R. Mccormick And Near V. Minnesota, Eric B. Easton

Federal Communications Law Journal

Media corporations and their professional and trade associations, as well as organizations such as Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and the American Civil Liberties Union, regularly monitor litigation that implicates First Amendment values and decide whether, when, and how to intervene. But that was not always the case. While media companies have always lobbied and litigated in support of their business interests-antitrust, copyright, postal rates, taxes-litigation by the institutional press to create or avoid doctrinal precedent under the First Amendment began only in the late 1920s. Once the United States Supreme Court recognized the incorporation of the First …
