Hustle And Flow: A Social Network Analysis Of The American Federal Judiciary, Daniel Martin Katz, Derek Stafford Mar 2008

Hustle And Flow: A Social Network Analysis Of The American Federal Judiciary, Daniel Martin Katz, Derek Stafford

Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009

Scholars have long asserted that social structure is an important feature of a variety of societal institutions. As part of a larger effort to develop a fully integrated model of judicial decision making, we argue that social structure—operationalized as the professional and social connections between judicial actors—partially directs outcomes in the hierarchical federal judiciary.

Since different social structures impose dissimilar consequences upon outputs, the precursor to evaluating the doctrinal consequences that a given social structure imposes is a descriptive effort to characterize its nature. Given the difficulty associated with obtaining appropriate data for federal judges, it is necessary to rely …

Zinc (Zn) is an essential nutrient that affects immune function, especially within the digestive system, although the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. This study examined the effects of short-term moderate Zn restriction on intestinal health and immune function in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged mice through plasma cytokine profiling and histological evaluation of intestinal tissue sections. Adult male mice were fed with a Zn-adequate (40 ppm) or a Zn-marginal (4 ppm) diet for 4 weeks, and then a bacterial challenge was simulated by intraperitoneal injection of LPS (10 μg/g body weight [BW]) or saline (control). BW was recorded weekly, and feed intake …

Accurate Dna Fragment Sizing By Capillary Electrophoresis With Laser-Induced Fluorescence Array For Detection Of Sequence Specificity Of Dna Damage, Erwin V. Fundador, Dharamainder Choudhary, John B. Schenkman, James F. Rusling

UCHC Articles - Research

Cancer has been linked to mutations within specific codons in genes that code for critical biomolecules such as tumor suppressor proteins (e.g., p53). Activated metabolites like benzo[a]pyrenediol epoxide act on preferred nucleotide sequences of DNA, and such mutations have been identified in cancers. DNA reaction site identification depends on accurate analysis of oligonucleotide fragment sizes produced by strand breakage at the damaged sites. Herein, we report a new method for DNA fragment sizing using capillary electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence detection (CE-LIF). Absolute sizing accuracy and speed are achieved by utilizing a CE-LIF array with two-color fluorescence detection. Accuracy …

Threshold Levels For Selected South Dakota Retail And Service Businesses (2004), Mike Mccurry, Trevor Brooks Mar 2008

Threshold Levels For Selected South Dakota Retail And Service Businesses (2004), Mike Mccurry, Trevor Brooks

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

As rural populations decline, services are either lost or become spread over a larger geographic area. The population and service area equations that lead to school closures and consolidation affect all rural services. One of these equations predicts retail success by looking at an area’s potential market size: more potential customers improve the chance for retail success. The flip side is that it is hard to stay in business when the market area population drops too low. Market threshold is doubly relevant in South Dakota, which has counties that are some of the nation’s fastest growing and others that continue …

4-Hydroxyphenylretinamide (4hpr) Derivatives Regulate Aromatase Activity And Expression In Breast Cancer Cells, Bin Su, Serena M. Mershon, Laura A. Stonerock, Robert W. Curley Jr., Robert W. Brueggemeier Mar 2008

4-Hydroxyphenylretinamide (4hpr) Derivatives Regulate Aromatase Activity And Expression In Breast Cancer Cells, Bin Su, Serena M. Mershon, Laura A. Stonerock, Robert W. Curley Jr., Robert W. Brueggemeier

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Recent studies exhibit that 4-hydroxyphenylretinamide (4HPR) decreases aromatase activity in breast and placental cells. The effect of synthetic 4HPR analogs on aromatase and expression was examined in three breast cancer cell lines. Most derivatives did not decrease cellular aromatase activity. Two of the analogs even stimulated aromatase activity at the transcriptional level. Only one derivative significantly decreased aromatase in all three breast cancer cell lines and also suppressed CYP19 gene expression in one of the cell line. Placental microsomal aromatase assay rule out the possibility that this compound directly inhibits the aromatase enzyme. A non-genomic mechanism in suppression of cellular …

Determination Of Endocannabinoid Receptor Antagonist Sr141716 (Rimonabant) In Plasma By Liquid Chromatograph Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Melissa Mcculloch, Xiang Zhou, Yan Xu, Steve Brunell, Linda Spear

Chemistry Faculty Publications

SR141716 (rimonabant) is an endocannabinoid receptor antagonist. Endocannabinoids are a class of chemicals that affect neurotransmission via G-protein coupled CB1 (brain) and CB2 (peripheral tissue) receptors. Numerous animal studies have shown that SR141716 binds with the CB1 receptor in the brain, resulting in several biological consequences including reduced alcohol intake and reward as well as reduced food consumption. In this work, an analytical method based on liquid chromatography and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC–ESI-MS/MS) has been developed and validated for the quantitative measurement of SR141716 in both human and rat plasma to support the investigation of this compound. A …

Rotation Of Visual Landmark Cues Influences The Spatial Response Profile Of Hippocampal Neurons In Freely-Moving Homing Pigeons, Gerald E. Hough, Vernon P. Bingman Mar 2008

Rotation Of Visual Landmark Cues Influences The Spatial Response Profile Of Hippocampal Neurons In Freely-Moving Homing Pigeons, Gerald E. Hough, Vernon P. Bingman

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Pigeon hippocampal neurons display two spatial response profiles: location fields frequently at goals, and path fields connecting goals. We recorded from 15 location and six path cells, with color cues positioned near four goal locations. Following color cue rotation, most location cells (12/15) shifted their response fields; path cells (5/6) lost their fields. Therefore, local visual cues can independently define a reference frame for location cells, but path cells may be more broadly tuned to context or alternative reference frames.
