Effects Of Water Temperature On Growth Of Razorback Sucker Larvae, Kevin Bestgen
Effects Of Water Temperature On Growth Of Razorback Sucker Larvae, Kevin Bestgen
Western North American Naturalist
I conducted laboratory experiments and fit a response surface regression model to evaluate growth of endangered razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus) up to 37 days post-hatch. Fish growth at ad libitum ration was positively related to water temperature, and larvae reared at 25.5°C grew about twice as fast in length and 4 times as fast in weight as those at 16.5°C. Growth was intermediate at 19.5°C and 22.5°C. Time required for razorback sucker larvae to exceed 25 mm total length (TL), a potentially important threshold for reduced predation, was 30 days (post-hatch) at 25.5°C, 33 days at 22.5°C, 36 …

Winter And Early Spring Bird Communities In Grasslands, Shrubsteppe, And Juniper Woodlands In Central Oregon, Daniel P. Reinkensmeyer, Richard F. Miller, Robert G. Anthony, Vern E. Marr, Corinne M. Duncan
Western North American Naturalist
We compared winter (December, January, and February) and early spring (March and April) bird communities among 4 successional stages that included grassland, shrubsteppe, juniper-shrubsteppe, and old-growth juniper woodland in central Oregon. Birds were surveyed monthly from December through April in 1998/1999 and 1999/2000 using the point count method to estimate relative abundance of birds (individuals · transect−1year−1). We used distance sampling to correct for potential bias in estimating abundance and density among successional stages. A total of 4513 birds (32 species) were detected. Relative abundance of total birds (all species combined) was similar in the juniper-shrubsteppe …
Characterization Of A Contact Zone Between Two Subspecies Of The Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus Fuscus) In Nebraska, Justin D. Hoffman, Hugh H. Genoways
Characterization Of A Contact Zone Between Two Subspecies Of The Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus Fuscus) In Nebraska, Justin D. Hoffman, Hugh H. Genoways
Western North American Naturalist
Two subspecies of the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) are reported to occur in Nebraska. The eastern race, E. f. fuscus, is reportedly bigger and darker than its western counterpart E. f. pallidus. Where these 2 subspecies come in contact is the subject of debate. We used external, cranial, and colorimetric data to investigate geographic variation among populations of E. fuscus in Nebraska to determine the location of the zone of contact between E. f. fuscus and E. f. pallidus. We discovered significant variation in external, cranial, and colorimetric data, suggesting that E. fuscus is …
Strong Genetic Differentiation Among Neighboring Populations Of A Locally Endemic Primrose, Lee Bjerregaard, Paul G. Wolf
Strong Genetic Differentiation Among Neighboring Populations Of A Locally Endemic Primrose, Lee Bjerregaard, Paul G. Wolf
Western North American Naturalist
Maguire primrose is a locally endemic plant of northern Utah, USA, with a total known range of less than 20 km2. A previous study found evidence for strong differentiation among local populations at 4 allozyme loci. Here we reexamined populations using 165 AFLP loci and found further evidence of unusually strong genetic structure. We also found an apparently fixed nucleotide difference between populations for a noncoding region of chloroplast DNA, mirroring the patterns seen for AFLP loci. Furthermore, we tested the hypothesis that the current population structure is the result of breeding barriers between plants from different populations. …

Dynamics Of Rodent Populations In Semiarid Habitats In Lassen County, California, Sara C. Gillespie, Dirk H. Van Vuren, Douglas A. Kelt, John M. Eadie, Daniel W. Anderson
Western North American Naturalist
From 1996 to 2004, we studied population dynamics of a rodent assemblage in semiarid habitats in Lassen County, California. Abundances of rodents appeared affected by fluctuations in precipitation from a high in 1996 to average and slightly below-average levels in subsequent years; perhaps reflecting this, assemblage composition also changed dramatically during the study period. California kangaroo rats (Dipodomys californicus) declined from abundant to extremely rare, abundances of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) fluctuated greatly during the study period, and, perhaps most notably, populations of dusky-footed woodrats (Neotoma fuscipes) appeared to decline to local extinction, possibly …
Comparison Of Desert Valvata Snail Growth At Three Densities Of The Invasive New Zealand Mudsnail, Steven Lysne, Peter Koetsier
Comparison Of Desert Valvata Snail Growth At Three Densities Of The Invasive New Zealand Mudsnail, Steven Lysne, Peter Koetsier
Western North American Naturalist
Invasive species are of concern to natural resource managers and conservation biologists. The New Zealand mudsnail (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) has invaded many freshwaters of the western United States with unknown consequences on the native benthic invertebrate fauna. We conducted a laboratory investigation to determine if mudsnails affected the growth of the desert valvata snail (Valvata utahensis), a species native to the Snake River in southern Idaho. Results indicated that increasing densities of mudsnails limited the growth rate and absolute growth of the desert valvata. We suggest that absolute growth is a better metric than growth rate for …
Spotted Bats (Euderma Maculatum) From Mt. Taylor, New Mexico, Keith Geluso
Spotted Bats (Euderma Maculatum) From Mt. Taylor, New Mexico, Keith Geluso
Western North American Naturalist
The spotted bat (Euderma maculatum) is an elusive and rarely captured species in western North America. In the United States, it is known from 12 western states. In New Mexico, few individuals have been reported in recent years, and multiple individuals are known from 9 of 12 capture sites. This study reports on additional captures of E. maculatum from Mt. Taylor (Cibola County) for 2 consecutive summers and includes evidence of a reproducing population in the area. On 30 June/1 July 2006, I captured 4 individuals of E. maculatum, including a lactating female, and on 5 June …

Fashion Advertising, Men’S Magazines, And Sex In Advertising: A Critical-Interpretive Study, Jennifer Ford
Fashion Advertising, Men’S Magazines, And Sex In Advertising: A Critical-Interpretive Study, Jennifer Ford
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examines sexualized portrayals of women in fashion advertising found in metro-sexual men's magazines as visual rhetoric. Historically, studies on sexual images of women in advertising have focused on content analyses of these images and how they affect women. This study asks how sexualized imagery of women functions rhetorically as part of a branding message designed to sell products. The exemplar advertisements were chosen specifically for their sexual imagery from an earlier study by the researcher on sexual images of women in fashion advertisements found in men's magazines.
The messages interpreted within the visuals of this study reveal a …

The plaintiffs in this case met their burden of demonstrating the irrationality of Iowa’s statutory exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage. They did this, in part, by presenting social science research regarding the irrelevance of sexual orientation to parental ability and the psychological and social well-being of children raised by same-sex parents. In addition to arguing that the marriage exclusion is irrational, the plaintiffs also alleged that the exclusion should be subject to heightened scrutiny because it violates the fundamental right to marry and discriminates on the bases of gender and sexual orientation. Amici agree that the exclusion of same-sex …
Brevetoxin Body Burdens In Seabirds Of Southwest Florida, Karen E. Atwood
Brevetoxin Body Burdens In Seabirds Of Southwest Florida, Karen E. Atwood
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Harmful algal blooms (HABs, or "red tides") of the brevetoxin-producing dinoflagellate Karenia brevis occur periodically along Florida's Gulf coast. Mass mortalities of marine birds have long been associated with these blooms, yet there are few data documenting the accumulation of brevetoxins (PbTx) in the tissues of birds.
Post-mortem evaluations were performed on 185 birds representing 22 species collected from October 2001 through May 2006 during red tide and non-red tide events to quantify their body burdens of brevetoxins. A variety of tissues and organs were selected for brevetoxin analysis including blood, brain, heart, fat, stomach or gut contents, intestinal contents …
Dental Hygienists' Beliefs, Norms, Attitudes, And Intentions Toward Treating Hiv/Aids Patients, Barbara Clark-Alexander
Dental Hygienists' Beliefs, Norms, Attitudes, And Intentions Toward Treating Hiv/Aids Patients, Barbara Clark-Alexander
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is a great demand and need for oral health care during the course of HIV disease (HIV Costs and Services Utilization Study; Marcus et. al., 2005). HIV+ patients identified three key barriers to obtaining oral health treatment: 1) beliefs and attitudes of dental health care providers (DHCPs) may have lead to their unwillingness to treat HIV/AIDS patients; 2) the existence of racial and ethnic disparities in health care in the United States, and 3) how DHCPs perceive their risk of contracting HIV. The fear and stigma associated with treating patients with HIV further compromises their access to care and …
Predator Behavior And Prey Demography In Patchy Habitats, Brian J. Halstead
Predator Behavior And Prey Demography In Patchy Habitats, Brian J. Halstead
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Habitat loss and fragmentation are among the greatest threats to biodiversity, and these threats can be exacerbated or alleviated by the presence of interacting species. The effect of habitat loss and fragmentation on predator-prey systems has received extensive theoretical attention, but empirical studies of these systems yield few clear patterns. I examined the influence of prey abundance and spatial distribution on the foraging ecology and spatial ecology of Masticophis flagellum (Coachwhip) using capture-mark-recapture and radio telemetry techniques. I also examined the influence of saurophagous snake abundance on the survival rate of Sceloporus woodi (Florida Scrub Lizard) populations. Masticophis flagellum positively …

Using Hierarchical Temporal Memory For Detecting Anomalous Network Activity, Gerod M. Bonhoff
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the nature of cyberspace and forms an argument for it as an intangible world. This research is motivated by the notion of creating intelligently autonomous cybercraft to reside in that environment and maintain domain superiority. Specifically, this paper offers 7 challenges associated with development of intelligent, autonomous cybercraft. The primary focus is an analysis of the claims of a machine learning language called Hierarchical Temporal Memory (HTM). In particular, HTM theory claims to facilitate intelligence in machines via accurate predictions. It further claims to be able to make accurate predictions of unusual worlds, like cyberspace. The research …

Rnai-Mediated Gene Silencing In Tick Synganglia: A Proof Of Concept Study, Shahid Karim, Bronwyn Kenny, Emily Troiano, Thomas N. Mather
Plant Sciences and Entomology Faculty Publications
Background: Progress in generating comprehensive EST libraries and genome sequencing is setting the stage for reverse genetic approaches to gene function studies in the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis). However, proving that RNAi can work in nervous tissue has been problematic. Developing an ability to manipulate gene expression in the tick synganglia likely would accelerate understanding of tick neurobiology. Here, we assess gene silencing by RNA interference in the adult female black-legged tick synganglia.
Results: Tick β-Actin and Na+-K+-ATPase were chosen as targets because both genes express in all tick tissues including synganglia. …
