Legal Limits On Religious Conversion In India, Laura Dudley Jenkins Apr 2008

Legal Limits On Religious Conversion In India, Laura Dudley Jenkins

Law and Contemporary Problems

In contemporary India, government assessments of the legitimacy of conversions tend to rely on two assumptions: first, that people who convert in groups may not have freely chosen conversion, and second, that certain groups are particularly vulnerable to being lured into changing their religion. These assumptions, which pervade the anticonversion laws as well as related court decisions and government committee reports, reinforce social constructions of women and lower castes as inherently naive and susceptible to manipulation. Here, Jenkins contends to carefully scrutinized the assumptions since like "protective" laws in many other contexts, such laws restrict freedom in highly personal, individual …

The Homodimeric Kinesin, Kif17, Is Essential For Vertebrate Photoreceptor Sensory Outer Segment Development, Christine Insinna, Narendra Pathak, Brian Perkins, Iain Drummond, Joseph C. Besharse

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

Sensory cilia and intraflagellar transport (IFT), a pathway essential for ciliogenesis, play important roles in embryonic development and cell differentiation. In vertebrate photoreceptors IFT is required for the early development of ciliated sensory outer segments (OS), an elaborate organelle that sequesters the many proteins comprising the phototransduction machinery. As in other cilia and flagella, heterotrimeric members of the kinesin 2 family have been implicated as the anterograde IFT motor in OS. However, in Caenorhabditis elegans, OSM-3, a homodimeric kinesin 2 motor, plays an essential role in some, but not all sensory cilia. Kif17, a vertebrate OSM-3 homologue, is known for …

Hydrodynamic Numerical Ocean Models Support Environmental Studies And Conservation Efforts: From An Arctic Estuary To A Caribbean Coral Reef, Tal Ezer Apr 2008

Hydrodynamic Numerical Ocean Models Support Environmental Studies And Conservation Efforts: From An Arctic Estuary To A Caribbean Coral Reef, Tal Ezer

CCPO Publications

Potential future climate changes, as highlighted recently by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, are likely to have different local impacts in different regions of the globe. Oceanic ecosystems may be especially sensitive to large environmental variation, and they are closely connected to physical changes such as temperature, salinity, currents and sea level. Two examples, from very different environments – one in a cold climate and one in a tropical climate, will be discussed here to show how hydrodynamic numerical models are helping to understand physical-biological interactions and potentially help dealing with future climate changes.

Legal Theoretic Inadequacy And Obesity Epidemic Analysis, David Yosifon Apr 2008

Legal Theoretic Inadequacy And Obesity Epidemic Analysis, David Yosifon

Faculty Publications

This Article explores crucial analytic and normative limitations in presently dominant and ascendant approaches to legal theory. The approaches' failure to provide a satisfying framework for analyzing the obesity epidemic presently raging undeterred in American society reveals these limitations. Conventional law and economics scholars writing on the subject have deployed familiar frameworks to reach predictable conclusions that are neither intellectually nor morally justifiable. This Article argues that recent theoretical innovations promulgated within the burgeoning law and behavioralism movement have thus far provided no more reliable a framework for legal analysis of the obesity epidemic than has conventional law and economics. …

A Carboxyl-Terminal Sequence In The Lutropin Β Subunit Contributes To The Sorting Of Lutropin To The Regulated Pathway, Albina Jablonka-Shariff, Christopher A. Pearl, Anna Comstock, Irving Boime Apr 2008

A Carboxyl-Terminal Sequence In The Lutropin Β Subunit Contributes To The Sorting Of Lutropin To The Regulated Pathway, Albina Jablonka-Shariff, Christopher A. Pearl, Anna Comstock, Irving Boime

Peer Reviewed Articles

Although synthesized in the same pituitary gonadotropes, the secretion profiles of lutropin (LH) and follitropin (FSH) differ. LH is secreted through a regulated pathway and associated with a bolus release at mid-estrous cycle. In contrast, the majority of FSH is secreted constitutively with an incremental increase until ovulation. Both share an identicalα subunit, and thus theβ subunit contains determinants for sorting into the regulated pathway. Previously, we demonstrated that a hydrophobic carboxyl-terminal heptapeptide of the LHβ subunit (Leu-Ser-Gly-Leu-Leu-Phe-Leu), not found in the FSHβ subunit, influences the intracellular behavior of the LH dimer. To test the hypothesis that the peptide contributes …

Community Response To Habitat Restoration In Sickle And Bear Creeks, With Emphasis On Mottled Sculpin In Sickle Creek, Jason Andrew Deboer Apr 2008

Community Response To Habitat Restoration In Sickle And Bear Creeks, With Emphasis On Mottled Sculpin In Sickle Creek, Jason Andrew Deboer

Masters Theses

Habitat restoration is employed by biologists and managers to improve the natural functionality and value of aquatic resources. Systems suffer impairment from many sources, including excessive fine sediment, which negatively affects substrate composition, channel morphology, aquatic invertebrate habitat, and fish reproduction and recruitment. Primary objectives included monitoring the biophysical response to sediment abatement in the Big Manistee River watershed. Secondary objectives included (1) placing the biophysical response to the restoration in the context of a much larger watershed plan, (2) quantifying seasonal mottled sculpin movement and habitat use in Sickle Creek for 1-year, and (3) determining habitat variables which may …

Impaired Endothelium-Dependent Vasodilation In Overweight And Obese Adult Humans Is Not Limited To Muscarinic Receptor Agonists, Gary P. Van Guilder, Brian L Stauffer, Jared J Greiner, Christopher A Desouza Apr 2008

Impaired Endothelium-Dependent Vasodilation In Overweight And Obese Adult Humans Is Not Limited To Muscarinic Receptor Agonists, Gary P. Van Guilder, Brian L Stauffer, Jared J Greiner, Christopher A Desouza

Health and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Muscarinic receptor agonists have primarily been used to characterize endothelium-dependent vasodilator dysfunction with overweight/obesity. Reliance on a single class of agonist, however, yields limited, and potentially misleading, information regarding endothelial vasodilator capacity. The aims of this study were to determine 1) whether the overweight/obesity-related reduction in endothelium-dependent vasodilation extends beyond muscarinic receptor agonists and 2) whether the contribution of nitric oxide (NO) to endothelium-dependent vasodilation is reduced in overweight/obese adults. Eighty-six middle-aged and older adults were studied: 42 normal-weight (54 +/- 1 yr, 21 men and 21 women, body mass index = 23.4 +/- 0.3 kg/m(2)) and 44 overweight/obese (54 …

17beta-Estradiol Increases Basal But Not Bradykinin-Stimulated Release Of Active T-Pa In Young Postmenopausal Women, Mias Pretorius, Gary Van Guilder, Raul J Guzman, James M Luther, Nancy J Brown Apr 2008

17beta-Estradiol Increases Basal But Not Bradykinin-Stimulated Release Of Active T-Pa In Young Postmenopausal Women, Mias Pretorius, Gary Van Guilder, Raul J Guzman, James M Luther, Nancy J Brown

Health and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition potentiates basal and bradykinin-stimulated tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) release to a greater extent in women than in men. This study tested the hypothesis that 17beta-estradiol enhances the effect of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition on t-PA release in young postmenopausal women. We conducted a double-blind, prospective, crossover study in 14 young postmenopausal women (mean age 48.2+/-2.3 years) who were randomized to receive 17beta-estradiol (1 mg/d) or matching placebo for 4 weeks. At the end of each treatment period, we measured the effect of intraarterial infusion of bradykinin, methacholine, and nitroprusside on forearm blood flow and net t-PA release, before …

High Status Men (But Not Women) Capture The Eye Of The Beholder, C. Nathan Dewall, Jon K. Maner Apr 2008

High Status Men (But Not Women) Capture The Eye Of The Beholder, C. Nathan Dewall, Jon K. Maner

Psychology Faculty Publications

Two studies tested the hypothesis that people attend preferentially to high status men (but not women). Participants overestimated the frequency of high status men in rapidly presented arrays (Experiment 1) and fixated their visual attention on high status men in an eye-tracking study (Experiment 2). Neither study showed any evidence of preferential attention to high status women, but there was evidence that physically attractive women captured attention. The results from both studies support evolutionary theories regarding differential prioritization of social status and physical attractiveness in men versus women. These findings illustrate how examination of early-in-the-stream social cognition can provide useful …

New Records, Biogeography, And Habitat Protection Needs Of Four Species Of Potamon (Decapoda: Brachyura) In Greece, Eugene G. Maurakis, David V. Grimes

Virginia Journal of Science

Objectives are to determine the occurrence of species of Potamon in eastern Crete and the Aegean Islands (Chios, Naxos, Paros, Mykonos, Tinos and Andros); generate phylogenetic relationships among species to propose a biogeographic hypothesis relative to current distributions of the four species of the freshwater crab genus, Potamon, in Greece; and comment on the need to protect habitat suitable for the survival of species of Potamon in the country. Our collections, made in areas not previously sampled by researchers, indicate the presence of Potamon fluviatile on Tinos, N axos, and Andros, and Potamon potamios from central to eastern Crete; …

Novel Weapons: Invasive Plant Suppresses Fungal Mutualists In America But Not In Its Native Europe, Ragan M. Callaway, Don Cipollini, Kathryn Barto, Giles C. Thelen, Steven G. Hallett, Daniel Prati, Kristina Stinson, John Klironomos

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Why some invasive plant species transmogrify from weak competitors at home to strong competitors abroad remains one of the most elusive questions in ecology. Some evidence suggests that disproportionately high densities of some invaders are due to the release of biochemicals that are novel, and therefore harmful, to naïve organisms in their new range. So far, such evidence has been restricted to the direct phytotoxic effects of plants on other plants. Here we found that one of North America's most aggressive invaders of undisturbed forest understories, Alliaria petiolata (garlic mustard) and a plant that inhibits mycorrhizal fungal mutualists of North …

Science On Trial, Valerie P. Hans Apr 2008

Science On Trial, Valerie P. Hans

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The increasing complexity of both criminal and civil jury trials raises a host of issues for lawyers and judges. For the litigator, the first question is whether a jury can be trusted with a case that turns on highly technical evidence. For the trial judge, there are decisions about the admissibility of expert testimony, whether it is based on sound science, and whether a jury is likely to be misled by scientific claims. Should the judge permit jury innovations such as note taking, question asking, and juror discussions of evidence during the trial, hoping to increase jury comprehension of the …

Insubstantiality Of The Substantial Factor Test For Causation, The, Joseph Sanders, Miachal D. Green

Missouri Law Review

Because David's focus in his scholarly work has been on factual causation, and because he has contributed so much to our understanding of that subject in the Third Restatement, we have chosen a topic in that area for this essay. The essay addresses factual cause in toxic substances cases where the evidence of exposure is meager. 7 We're not sure that David will agree with all of what we say, but we hope that he will be honored by our choice of topic.

Health Risks And Academic Performance: Implications For College Students, Faculty And Administration, Mary F.D. Larson

Theses and Dissertations

In order to enter post-secondary education, a student must have demonstrated the ability to do reasonably well in an academic environment. Yet, many students end up stopping out or even dropping out of college, and oftentimes it is due to academic underachievement. There are many reasons why students do not succeed and one of those reasons is health.

The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between physical health, mental health, stressors, sleep, and substance use and abuse variables and academic performance in a sample of 503 students from a small private liberal arts college in the Midwest. The …
