Kaposi’S Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus Transactivator Rta Promotes Degradation Of The Repressors To Regulateviral Lytic Replication, Zhilong Yang, Zhangcai Yan, Charles Wood
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus/human herpesvirus 8 (KSHV/HHV-8) RTA is an important protein involved in the induction of KSHV lytic replication from latency through activation of the lytic cascade. A number of cellular and viral proteins, including K-RBP, have been found to repress RTA-mediated transactivation and KSHV lytic replication. However, it is unclear as to how RTA overcomes the suppression during lytic reactivation. In this study, we found that RTA can induce K-RBP degradation through the ubiquitinproteasome pathway and that two regions in RTA are responsible. Moreover, we found that RTA can promote the degradation of several other RTA repressors. RTA mutants …

Review Of Medical Imaging Devices For The Integration Of Medical Technology And Earmold Production And Grant Proposal Development, Michelle L. Saltarrelli
Review Of Medical Imaging Devices For The Integration Of Medical Technology And Earmold Production And Grant Proposal Development, Michelle L. Saltarrelli
Doctoral Dissertations
The first purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of a medical device to replace the current method of earmold production. The medical device would be used to scan the external ear (i.e., external auditory canal and pinna), scan the dimensions to an imaging software system, and finally send the three-dimensional image electronically to a milling machine for the production of earmolds and hearing aid shells. Currently, audiologists use an eight step process described by Dillon (2001) which due to the invasive nature of the procedure presents potential complications to both the clinician and client, The potential complications …

Before Virtue: Halakhah, Dharmasastra, And What Law Can Create, Donald R. Davis Jr.
Law and Contemporary Problems
Davis, referring to the traditional Jewish and Hindu legal texts, addresses on what law creates or produces. He focuses on both Jewish and Hindu jurisprudence claim that law can create--a human, not a biological homo sapiens, but rather the full ideal of what humans were meant to be. He argues that it is the essential indistinguishability of law and religion in both traditional Judaism and Hinduism that permits the ideal human to be created through religious law.
Do Self-Esteem And Parental Authority Influence Self-Reported Aggressive Behaviors?, Nicole Svenkerud
Do Self-Esteem And Parental Authority Influence Self-Reported Aggressive Behaviors?, Nicole Svenkerud
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Aggression is a primary concern throughout the United States and over the last 40 years many researchers have tried to understand how aggression manifests (Tremblay, 2002). The present study examined the relations between self-esteem, perceived parental authority, and aggression. Two-hundred sixty participants were asked about their aggressive behaviors, self-esteem, and perceptions of parental authority. Results indicated that perceived authoritarian parenting was negatively correlated with hostility and physical aggression. Self-esteem was positively correlated with perceived authoritative parenting. Individuals’ who reported lower levels of self-esteem also reported higher levels of anger and hostility. The present study can contribute to understanding how an …

Tibetan Medicine: Carving A Niche In The Modern Medical And Scientific Community, Devon Marie Fitzgerald
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Tibetan medicine is an ancient tradition, stretching back over one thousand years. Today, the Tibetan medical community, centered at the Men-Tsee-Khang (Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute) in Dharamsala, India, is trying to bring Tibetan medicine into the modern world. They are doing this mainly by focusing on research, based on modern scientific methods, to produce clinical and laboratory studies demonstrating the efficacy of Tibetan medicine. This paper compiles interviews from Men-Tsee-Khang staff closest to these projects, articles about modernizing traditional medicine from both the Tibetan and Western perspectives, and a review of some of the recent studies to come out …

Progress toward understanding the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis (CF) and developing effective therapies has been hampered by lack of a relevant animal model. CF mice fail to develop the lung and pancreatic disease that cause most of the morbidity and mortality in patients with CF. Pigs may be better animals than mice in which to model human genetic diseases because their anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, size, and genetics are more similar to those of humans. However, to date, gene-targeted mammalian models of human genetic disease have not been reported for any species other than mice. Here we describe the first steps …

Incorporation Of Space Syntax Theory In Determining Safe And Efficient Construction Site Layout, Minsuck Cho
Incorporation Of Space Syntax Theory In Determining Safe And Efficient Construction Site Layout, Minsuck Cho
Masters Theses
Facility layout is an important to determine a proper arrangement of temporary facilities in a construction site. It significantly impacts productivity and safety of construction. The objectives of layout planning are to minimize travel distance and time, to decrease the facility transportation and setup costs, and to improve site safety. Despite the importance of facility layout, it is often overlooked in the planning phase. Several models have been developed taking some of these factors into consideration; however, construction managers and site planners often regard cost as the most important factor in layout planning and pay less attention to safety and …

Alignment Of Genetic And Physical Maps Of Gibberella Zeae, Jungkwan Lee, James E. Jurgenson, John F. Leslie, Robert L. Bowden
Faculty Work
We previously published a genetic map of Gibberella zeae (Fusarium graminearum sensu lato) based on a cross between Kansas strain Z-3639 (lineage 7) and Japanese strain R-5470 (lineage 6). In this study, that genetic map was aligned with the third assembly of the genomic sequence of ++ strain PH-1 (lineage 7) using seven structural genes and 108 sequenced amplified fragment length polymorphism markers. Several linkage groups were combined based on the alignments, the nine original linkage groups were reduced to six groups, and the total size of the genetic map was reduced from 1,286 to 1,140 centimorgans. Nine …

Faculty Publications
Capsular polysaccharide (CPS) is a major virulence factor in Vibrio vulnificus, and encapsulated strains have an opaque, smooth (OpS) colony morphology, while nonencapsulated strains have a translucent, smooth (TrS) colony morphology. Previously, we showed that OpS and TrS parental strains can yield a third colony type, rugose (R), and that the resulting strains, with the OpR and TrR phenotypes, respectively, form copious biofilms. Here we show that while OpR and TrR strains both produce three-dimensional biofilm structures that are indicative of rugose extracellular polysaccharide (rEPS) production, OpR strains also retain expression of CPS and are virulent in an iron-supplemented mouse …

The Sinorhizobium Meliloti Msba2 Protein Is Essential For The Legume Symbiosis, Sebastian Beck, Victoria L. Marlow, Katy Woodall, William T. Doerrler, Euan K. James, Gail P. Ferguson
Faculty Publications
Sinorhizobium meliloti is a beneficial legume symbiont, closely related to Brucella species, which are chronic mammalian pathogens. We discovered that the S. meliloti MsbA2 protein is essential to ensure the symbiotic interaction with the host plant, alfalfa. S. meliloti invades plant cells via plant-derived structures known as infection threads. However, in the absence of MsbA2, S. meliloti remains trapped within abnormally thickened infection threads and induces a heightened plant defence response, characterized by a substantial thickening of the nodule endodermis layer and the accumulation of polyphenolic compounds. The S. meliloti MsbA2 protein is homologous to the Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide/phospholipid trafficking …
