Maternal Cocaine Administration In Mice Alters Dna Methylation And Gene Expression In Hippocampal Neurons Of Neonatal And Prepubertal Offspring, Svetlana I. Novikova, Fang He, Jie Bai, Nicholas J. Cutrufello, Michael S. Lidow, Ashiwel S. Undieh Apr 2008

Maternal Cocaine Administration In Mice Alters Dna Methylation And Gene Expression In Hippocampal Neurons Of Neonatal And Prepubertal Offspring, Svetlana I. Novikova, Fang He, Jie Bai, Nicholas J. Cutrufello, Michael S. Lidow, Ashiwel S. Undieh

Publications and Research

Previous studies documented significant behavioral changes in the offspring of cocaine-exposed mothers. We now explore the hypothesis that maternal cocaine exposure could alter the fetal epigenetic machinery sufficiently to cause lasting neurochemical and functional changes in the offspring. Pregnant CD1 mice were administered either saline or 20 mg/kg cocaine twice daily on gestational days 8–19. Male pups from each of ten litters of the cocaine and control groups were analyzed at 3 (P3) or 30 (P30) days postnatum. Global DNA methylation, methylated DNA immunoprecipitation followed by CGI2 microarray profiling and bisulfite sequencing, as well as quantitative real-time RT-PCR gene expression …

Quantitative Measure Of Cytotoxicity Of Anticancer Drugs And Other Agents, Zhimin Tao, Eyone Jones, Jerry Goodisman, Abdul-Kader Souid Apr 2008

Quantitative Measure Of Cytotoxicity Of Anticancer Drugs And Other Agents, Zhimin Tao, Eyone Jones, Jerry Goodisman, Abdul-Kader Souid

Chemistry - All Scholarship

Many anticancer drugs act on cancer cells to promote apoptosis, which includes impairment of cellular respiration (mitochondrial O 2 consumption). Other agents also inhibit cellular respiration, sometimes irreversibly. To investigate the sensitivity of cancer cells to cytotoxins, including anticancer drugs, we compare the profiles of cellular O 2 consumption in the absence and presence of these agents. Oxygen measurements are made at 37 °C, using glucose as a substrate, with [O 2] obtained from the phosphorescence decay rate of a palladium phosphor. The rate of respiration k is defined as -d[O 2]/dt in a sealed container. Different toxins …

Increasing Dogma Scaling Through Clustering, Nathan Hyrum Ekstrom Apr 2008

Increasing Dogma Scaling Through Clustering, Nathan Hyrum Ekstrom

Theses and Dissertations

DOGMA is a distributed computing architecture developed at Brigham Young University. It makes use of idle computers to provide additional computing resources to applications, similar to Seti@home. DOGMA's ability to scale to large numbers of computers is hindered by its strict client-server architecture. Recent research with DOGMA has shown that introducing localized peer-to-peer downloading abilities enhances DOGMA's performance while reducing the amount of network and server usage. This thesis proposes to further extend the peer-to-peer abilities of DOGMA to include peering client server communication by creating dynamic clusters of clients. The client clusters aggregate their communication with only one client …

Cysteine Based Pna (Cpna): Design, Synthesis And Application, Sung Wook Yi Apr 2008

Cysteine Based Pna (Cpna): Design, Synthesis And Application, Sung Wook Yi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This report mainly discusses the development of the cysteine based PNA (CPNA), which is an analogue of PNAs. Peptide nucleic acids (PNA), a pseudopeptide DNA mimic, was discovered by Nielsen and his coworker in 1991. PNA is proved to sequence-specifically form a very stable duplex with complementary DNA and RNA strands through Watson-Crick base paring, and it is also capable of binding to duplex DNA by helix invasion. These intriguing properties of PNA implicated great potential for medical and biotechnical applications. Therefore, PNA has attracted many scientists in the fields of chemistry, biology, medicine including drug discovery and genetic diagnostics, …

Population Densities Of The Cuban Treefrog, Osteopilus Septentrionalis And Three Native Species Of Hyla (Hylidae), In Urban And Natural Habitats Of Southwest Florida, Teresa Piacenza Apr 2008

Population Densities Of The Cuban Treefrog, Osteopilus Septentrionalis And Three Native Species Of Hyla (Hylidae), In Urban And Natural Habitats Of Southwest Florida, Teresa Piacenza

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Cuban treefrog, Osteopilus septentrionalis, is an invasive species in Florida that may be negatively impacting adult and larval native treefrog species through competition via direct predation. The purpose of this study was to determine the abundance and distribution of O. septentrionalis in urban, semi-urban and natural habitats. The distribution and abundance of native treefrogs within the study area, Hyla cinerea, Hyla femoralis and Hyla squirella, were also estimated and compared to that of O. septentrionalis. Treefrogs were captured using PVC pipes with two internal diameters, 1.9 cm and 4.45 cm, hung on three tree types, …

Re-Imagining Collectivities: The Mexican Japanese During World War Ii, Selfa Chew Apr 2008

Re-Imagining Collectivities: The Mexican Japanese During World War Ii, Selfa Chew

NACCS Annual Conference Proceedings

Abstract:

The removal from the United States/Mexico borderlands of persons of Japanese descent during World War II resulted in great losses which, until now, have not been acknowledged by the Mexican or the United States government. Although their forced relocation is an event of great significance in the relations of the two countries involved in their displacement, the official narratives deny any deep impact suffered by Japanese Mexicans. However, the question of their uprooting is inextricably linked to the loss of civil rights and the Mexican government’s compliance with the United States’ requirement to neutralize internal enemies. This paper explores …

Blaxican Identity: An Exploratory Study Of Blacks/Chicanas/Os In California, Rebecca Romo Apr 2008

Blaxican Identity: An Exploratory Study Of Blacks/Chicanas/Os In California, Rebecca Romo

NACCS Annual Conference Proceedings

Abstract:

This paper explores the racial/ethnic identities of multiracial Black-Mexicans or ‘Blaxicans.’ In- depth interviews with 12 Blaxican individuals in California reveal how they negotiate distinct cultural systems to accomplish multiracial identities. I argue that choosing, accomplishing, and asserting a Blaxican identity challenges the dominant monoracial discourse in the United States, in particular among African American and Chicana/o communities. That is, Blaxican respondents are held accountable by African Americans and Chicanas/os/Mexicans to monoracial notions of ‘authenticity.’ The process whereby Blaxicans move between these monoracial spaces to create multiracial identities illustrates crucial aspects of the social construction of race/ethnicity in the …

Too Mex For The Masses: Bringing Mexican Regional Music To Market, Amanda Maria Morrison Apr 2008

Too Mex For The Masses: Bringing Mexican Regional Music To Market, Amanda Maria Morrison

NACCS Annual Conference Proceedings

Abstract:

This article explores the exclusion of Mexican regional music from major marketing and promotional efforts within the domestic music industry, and what that elision reveals about dominant and competing claims on “Latino” ethnic identity. Despite being the bestselling Latin music genre in the U.S., regional Mexican music receives the least development backing and attracts the fewest corporate sponsors. Unlike the suave salseros and Latin-pop divas of previous “Latin booms,” no Mexican regional artist, save for Selena, has ever been primed for mainstream “crossover” success. I argue that what is at stake in promotion of various Latin genres is the …
