In a document retrieval system where data is stored and compared with a specific query and then compared with other documents, we need to find the document that is most similar to the query. The most similar document will have the weight higher than other documents. When more than one document are proposed to the user, these documents have to be sorted according to their weights. Once the result is presented to the user by a recommender system, the user may check any document of interest. If there are two different documents' lists, as two proposed results presented by different …

A Nested Model Study Of The Loop Current Generated Variability And Its Impact On The West Florida Shelf, Alexander Barth, Aida Alvera-Azcarate, Robert H. Weisberg

Marine Science Faculty Publications

A West Florida Shelf model based on the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) is nested in the North Atlantic Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (NAT HYCOM). The focus of this work is the study of the impact of the Loop Current on the West Florida Shelf. In order to assess the model's accuracy, it is compared quantitatively to in situ temperature and velocity measurements on the shelf. A series of sensitivity experiments are conducted to determine the appropriate wind forcing, sea surface temperature relaxation, and mixing scheme. by the inclusion of the Loop Current, we are able to study the propagation …

Microbial Colonization Of Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vent Chimneys, Antoine Pagé May 2008

Microbial Colonization Of Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vent Chimneys, Antoine Pagé

Dissertations and Theses

Deep-sea hydrothermal vent chimneys harbor some of the most extreme environments supporting life on Earth. In the absence of sunlight, the microbial communities that colonize these deposits are based on energy harvested by chemolithoautotrophs exploiting the chemical disequilibria created as hydrothermal fluids mix with seawater. Although controversial, several models consider deep-sea vent chimneys as likely habitats for primitive ecosystems that developed during the Archean.

The goal of this study was to describe spatial and temporal patterns of microbial colonization in deep-sea vent chimneys emitting high temperature (>300°C) fluids. Microbial community composition and structure were evaluated through analyses of 16S …

Correlation Between Luminescent Properties And Local Coordination Environment For Erbium Dopant In Yttrium Oxide Nanotubes, Yuanbing Mao, John Bargar, Michael Toney, Jane P. Chang

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

The local dopant coordination environment and its effect on the photoluminescent (PL) spectral features of erbium-doped yttrium oxide nanotubes (NTs) were probed by synchrotron-based x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES), and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). XRD, XANES, and EXAFS data demonstrate that single phase solid solutions of Y (2-x) Erx O3 were formed at 0≤x

Storming The Castle: Non-Secular Subversion Of The Pas D'Armes In The Castle Of Perseverance, John Moss

Theses and Dissertations

It is important to remember that the categories of medieval performance were established far removed from their period in history. As a genre, the morality play includes a wide diversity of time, geography, content and performance styles. Such disparities have made it difficult to develop a comprehensive definition, without which comparisons between works cannot be consistent. As scholarship continues to explore these works in context of their performance, it becomes increasingly important to identify which performance styles best inform their production. In examining The Castle of Perseverance within the parameters of pas d’armes, new meanings can be drawn from its …

Psychometrics Of Osce Standardized Patient Measurements, Frederick R. B Stilson May 2008

Psychometrics Of Osce Standardized Patient Measurements, Frederick R. B Stilson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the reliability and validity of scores taken from a series of four task simulations used to evaluate medical students. The four role-play exercises represented two different cases or scripts, yielding two pairs of exercises that are considered alternate forms. The design allowed examining what is essentially the ceiling for reliability and validity of ratings taken in such role plays. A multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) matrix was computed with exercises as methods and competencies (history taking, clinical skills, and communication) as traits. The results within alternate forms (within cases) were then used as a baseline to evaluate the reliability and …

Post-translational modification of proteins regulates many cellular processes. Some modifications, including N-linked glycosylation, serve multiple functions. For example, the attachment of N-linked glycans to nascent proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum facilitates proper folding, whereas retention of high mannose glycans on misfolded glycoproteins serves as a signal for retrotranslocation and ubiquitin-mediated proteasomal degradation. Here we examine the substrate specificity of the only family of ubiquitin ligase subunits thought to target glycoproteins through their attached glycans. The five proteins comprising this FBA family (FBXO2, FBXO6, FBXO17, FBXO27, and FBXO44) contain a conserved G domain that mediates substrate binding. Using a variety of …

An Analysis Of Mer1 Function During Meiotic Splicing Regulation In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Frederick William Scherrer May 2008

An Analysis Of Mer1 Function During Meiotic Splicing Regulation In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Frederick William Scherrer

Dissertations

The transition from mitosis to meiosis in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae requires a significant change to gene expression profiles. Regulation of pre-messenger RNA splicing patterns during meiosis assists in this transition by fine tuning expression of essential meiotic genes. Produced only during meiosis, Mer1p is linked to the splicing of at least three mRNAs: MER2, MER3, and AMA1. Previous evidence suggests that Mer1p activates splicing by directly recruiting snRNPs or stabilizing intermediate splicing complexes formed on pre-mRNA that contains an intronic Mer1p enhancer element. However, some splicing factors, especially accessory/non-snRNP factors, have critical roles in retaining unspliced pre-mRNAs in the …

Spatial And Temporal Variation In The Natal Otolith Chemistry Of A Hawaiian Reef Fish: Prospects For Measuring Population Connectivity, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg, Scott L. Hamilton, Robert R. Warner May 2008

Spatial And Temporal Variation In The Natal Otolith Chemistry Of A Hawaiian Reef Fish: Prospects For Measuring Population Connectivity, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg, Scott L. Hamilton, Robert R. Warner

Biological Sciences

One of the most compelling unanswered questions in marine ecology is the extent to which local populations are connected via larval exchange. Recent work has suggested that variation in the chemistry of otoliths (earstones) of fishes may function as a natural tag, potentially allowing investigators to determine sources of individual larvae and estimate larval connectivity. We analyzed the spatial and temporal variation in natal otolith chemistry of a benthic-spawning reef fish from the Hawaiian Islands. We found no consistent chemical variation at the largest scale (>100 km, among islands), but found significant variation at moderate scales (sites within islands, …
