The Synthetic Triterpenoid Cddo-Methyl Ester Modulates Microglial Activities, Inhibits Tnf Production, And Provides Dopaminergic Neuroprotection, Thi A. Tran, Melissa K. Mccoy, Michael B. Sporn, Malú G. Tansey

Dartmouth Scholarship

Recent animal and human studies implicate chronic activation of microglia in the progressive loss of CNS neurons. The inflammatory mechanisms that have neurotoxic effects and contribute to neurodegeneration need to be elucidated and specifically targeted without interfering with the neuroprotective effects of glial activities. Synthetic triterpenoid analogs of oleanolic acid, such as methyl-2-cyano-3,12-dioxooleana-1,9-dien-28-oate (CDDO-Me, RTA 402) have potent anti-proliferative and differentiating effects on tumor cells, and anti-inflammatory activities on activated macrophages. We hypothesized that CDDO-Me may be able to suppress neurotoxic microglial activities while enhancing those that promote neuronal survival. Therefore, the aims of our study were to identify specific …

Complex Spontaneous Flows And Concentration Banding In Active Polar Films, Luca Giomi, M. Cristina Marchetti, Tanniemola B. Liverpool May 2008

Complex Spontaneous Flows And Concentration Banding In Active Polar Films, Luca Giomi, M. Cristina Marchetti, Tanniemola B. Liverpool

Physics - All Scholarship

We study the dynamical properties of active polar liquid crystalline films. Like active nematic films, active polar films undergo a dynamical transitions to spontaneously flowing steady-states. Spontaneous flow in polar fluids is, however, always accompanied by strong concentration inhomogeneities or "banding" not seen in nematics. In addition, a spectacular property unique to polar active films is their ability to generate spontaneously oscillating and banded flows even at low activity. The oscillatory flows become increasingly complicated for strong polarity.

Knitting Of Nature Into An Urban Fabric: A Riverfront Development, Thant Myat May 2008

Knitting Of Nature Into An Urban Fabric: A Riverfront Development, Thant Myat

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Tampa River Walk project is one of great importance for revitalization of the waterfront of downtown Tampa. This Riverfront development will be even more important when it becomes a vital example of how a riverfront can stretch and pull together downtown Tampa and its surrounding areas: Hyde Park, Harbour Island, and Historic Ybor. The purpose of this master's project is to explore an ecological ex pansion design approach for the Tampa River Walk as a master plan and then zooming into to an area to design in detail of what the riverfront can be. It will start by concentrating …

Analysis Of Cis-Elements That Facilitate Extrachromosomal Persistence Of Human Papillomavirus Genomes, Daraporn Pittayakhajonwut, Peter C. Angeletti May 2008

Analysis Of Cis-Elements That Facilitate Extrachromosomal Persistence Of Human Papillomavirus Genomes, Daraporn Pittayakhajonwut, Peter C. Angeletti

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are maintained latently in dividing epithelial cells as nuclear plasmids. Two virally encoded proteins, E1, a helicase, and E2, a transcription factor, are important players in replication and stable plasmid maintenance in host cells. Recent experiments in yeast have demonstrated that viral genomes retain replication and maintenance function independently of E1 and E2 [Angeletti, P.C., Kim, K., Fernandes, F.J., and Lambert, P.F. (2002). Stable replication of papillomavirus genomes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. J. Virol. 76(7), 3350-8; Kim, K., Angeletti, P.C., Hassebroek, E.C., and Lambert, P.F. (2005). The Reproductive Ecology Of Graptemys Geographica In The Central Canal, Kati Keppen Rush

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Life for all organisms involves carefully managing a limited amount of resources. In many cases these resources affect how organisms Jive on a daily basis. In addition to competition from other species, organisms face competition within their own species, populations, and niches. Those individuals that manage their resources effectively will increase their chances of survival, reproduction, and the continuation of their genes in the gene pool. Studies that focus on life history characteristics of organisms aim to understand the mechanisms used by organisms to increase the chances that their genes will remain in thegenepoolpasttheirown Iifetime.Thegoal ofthesemechanisms istoensuresurvival and maximize reproduction. …

Learning Style Diversity In Post –Secondary Distance Education, Douglas J. Mattson, Clarence C. Holland, Karen L. Parker May 2008

Learning Style Diversity In Post –Secondary Distance Education, Douglas J. Mattson, Clarence C. Holland, Karen L. Parker

Christian Perspectives in Education

During the fall semester of 2005, 153 university graduate students’ preferred learning styles were measured with the Kolb Learning Style Inventory, online version 3.1. The primary findings of the study indicated all of the learning styles and processes described by Kolb were represented in the distance learning population and suggested distance and residential learners uniquely engage the learning process. Biblical references were discussed with respect to the uniqueness displayed by study participants.

The Upper Country: French Enterprise In The Colonial Great Lakes, Claiborne A. Skinner Jr.

Faculty Publications & Research

The Upper Country melds myth and conventional history to provide a memorable tale of French designs in the middle of what became the United States. Putting the reader on the battlefields, at the trading posts, and on the rivers with voyageurs and their allies from the Indian nations, Claiborne Skinner reveals the saintly missionaries and jolly fur traders of popular myth as agents of a hard-nosed, often ruthless, imperial endeavor. Skinner's engaging narrative takes the reader through daily life at posts like Forts Saint Louis and Michilimakinac, illuminates the complexities of interracial marriage with the courtship of Michel Aco at …
