Capt. John Pope’S Collection Of Birds From Indianola, Stanley D. Casto
Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society
The specimens taken at Indianola, Texas, by Capt. John Pope during February and March 1855 represent the first collection of birds from this location on the Texas coast. Pope’s “Book of Descriptions” of the Indianola specimens is discussed along with the identities of the birds collected. Specimens of the Greater Scaup, Purple Martin, King Rail, Yellow-rumped Warbler, and American Golden-Plover from Indianola were the first of their species from Texas to be deposited at the Smithsonian Institution.

Project Prairie Birds: A Citizen Science Project For Wintering Grassland Birds, Susan A. Heath, Clifford E. Shackelford, Cecilia M. Riley

Coastal prairies are the primary winter destination for two dozen species of migratory grassland birds and losses of this habitat have proven detrimental to their populations. As a result, some of Partners in Flight’s (PIF) highest priority birds are grassland species. To examine grassland bird use of coastal prairies, Project Prairie Birds survey methodology was designed and field work was initiated in 1998. Avian surveys were conducted at 34 sites, each with multiple transects for a minimum of two years by all-volunteer, three-person crews identifying all species flushed from vegetation. Use Of Artificial Burrows By Western Burrowing Owls And Other Vertebrates During Winter In Southern Texas, Jennifer L. Keppers, Mary Kay Skoruppa, Marc C. Woodin, Graham C. Hickman

Burrows are an integral part of the natural history of the Western Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia hypugaea), however, mammal burrows are uncommon in southern Texas where the Burrowing Owl overwinters. Seventy-two artificial burrows of 2.4 m length were monitored regularly for Burrowing Owl and other vertebrate use over two non-breeding seasons (October through March, 2001 to 2003). Six types of burrows, differing in diameter (15, 20, or 25 cm) and number of openings (two or three), were monitored. Small-diameter (15 cm) burrows accounted for 79% of all Burrowing Owl use. Campus parking lot stormwater (CPLSW) runoff mobilizes a variety of constituents from vehicular and atmospheric deposition that may pose risks to receiving aquatic systems. The overall objective of this research was to provide an approach for risk characterization, toxicity identification, and remediation of constituents of concern in CPLSW. The small hive beetle, Aethina tumida Murray, (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) is an economically important honey bee pest, particularly in the southeastern United States. One method of controlling this pest is the use of an in-hive trap. Many different attractants have been developed and are used in such traps. Part one of my thesis involved testing a new attractant, a pollen substitute inoculated with the yeast Kodamaea ohmeri (NRRL Y-30722). Thirty-two test colonies were established with 0.9-kg (2-lb) packages of bees with queens. Eight colonies were placed in each apiary, and colonies received one of three treatments: 1) yeast-based attractant 2) apple …

The U.S. patent system, designed to protect rights to specific, marketable gadgets, has increasingly over the past few decades granted patents on comparatively abstract and amorphous ideas that stretch the system beyond recognition. Overly broad patents, and patents too far "upstream" from the marketplace, I argue, undermine the patent regime, hamper innovation, and prove exceedingly difficult to adjudicate. Using a series of conceptual and historical analogies, I attempt to assess the patenting of genes and other broad, "upstream" patents from a public policy context, emphasizing, as many are coming to realize, that things work best in the knowledge-based economy when …

Wary from decades exploitation in the name of science, Indigenous peoples typically approach externally-generated research with caution, and for good reason. Indigenous peoples have been on the receiving end of research carried out in insensitive, and sometimes, harmful ways. Research has historically been a top-down, outside-in process, with Indigenous peoples serving merely as research subjects, with little opportunity for meaningful participation or benefit from the outcomes of the research. You Don't Own Me: Recommendations To Protect Human Contributors Of Biological Material After Washington University V. Catalona, Laura B. Rowe

As research using human biological materials has rapidly developed, so too has the debate over the ownership of these highly valuable materials. Most recently, the Eighth Circuit in Washington University v. Catalona held that research participants do not retain any ownership interest in the biological materials they contribute to research. This note argues that the misguided Catalona decision, in combination with unclear, outdated, and inadequate federal research regulations, has left human contributors of biological material largely unprotected and vulnerable to the goals of researchers, institutions, and biotechnology firms. Identifying the initial sugar sensing and response activating mechanisms in plants has been difficult due to the dual functions of sugars as nutrients and as signaling molecules. In this study, we have examined transcript expression and promoter features of different genes encoding proteins for actin remodeling that have been implicated as targets of plant glucose signaling. Using Reverse Transcription PCR analysis, we confirmed that expression of two actin-associated genes, actin depolymerizing factor 9 (ADF9) and actin related protein 8 (ARP8), are repressed following a short-term glucose treatment of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings. Roundup¨ has been implicated as a possible cause for the declining amphibian populations in North America. Carefully designed laboratory toxicity tests are crucial for accurate risk assessment of the responses of anuran populations to incidental exposures of Roundup¨ herbicides. The overall objective of these studies was to determine the response of North American anuran species to exposures of Roundup¨ formulations and components to support or refute the claim that Roundup¨ is a factor in amphibian decline in North America. In our study, two dairy compost heaps and one vegetable scrap compost heap were constructed on two research farms in Clemson, SC. Samples were taken from each heap from different locations at 8 elected intervals and analyzed for enterococci and VRE counts by spread plating on Bile Esculin agar (BEA) and BEA containing 6 g/ml of vancomycin, respectively. The initial populations of enterococci and VRE in compost were in the range of 6.46-7.43 and 5.36-6.70 log CFU/g, respectively. After 30 days of active composting the average VRE populations declined ca. 4.6, 4.07, 3.97 and 1.6 logs at the top, center, …
