Analysis Of Leading Economic Indicator Data And Gross Domestic Product Data Using Neural Network Methods, Edward Tirados, John Jenq

In this report, Leading Economic Indicator (LEI) data and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data have been analyzed to determine if changes in the ten indicators can be used to predict changes in GDP. Three neural network methods and one statistical method were used to complete the analysis. For this project, the intent was to use multiple regression and backpropagation to develop correlations in which LEI values are used to predict the GDP change in the following quarter. Alternatively, Kohonen's self-organizing map and hierarchical clustering were used to group months of LEI data into clusters to determine if months in a …

Our cultural concept of Mars has historically been entrenched with its possibilities of life since Percival Lowell gazed at Giovanni Schiaparelli’s canali over a century ago. The proper role of courts engenders significant debate. Yet, what seems better settled is the principle that courts are the place at which the common law is developed. Its genesis and modifications evolve out of the juridical process and when that process becomes encumbered or deferred to the legislature the role of the judiciary is called into question. This essay makes the case that expressive minimalism too often governs the common law judicial approach to biotechnology. The patenting of human genes has been the focus of intense policy debate. The concerns associated with gene patenting are diverse, ranging from dignity based critiques to suggestions that patents will drive up the cost of health care. But the two concerns that have generated the most policy attention are that they hurt basic research (also known as the "anti-commons" problem) and access to useful technologies. The goal of this short comment is to question the degree to which existing evidence supports the speculation about these two justifications for patent reform. The legal and ethical protections afforded human subjects of research afford individuals who participate in research certain rights. Potential participants must give voluntary and informed consent to participate, they have the right to withdraw from research, they cannot be asked to waive certain rights, and they have the right to choose which studies they will participate in. But researchers, institutions, patient advocacy groups, and ethicists continue to debate how these rules should be applied in the context of genetics research—projects that involve using the individual's tissue or the individual's genetic information, such as gene sequences, and associated medical information. Intellectual Property And The Politics Of Emerging Technology: Inventors, Citizens, And Powers To Shape The Future, Stephen Hilgartner

This article argues that there is a mismatch between traditional intellectual property doctrine and the politics of intellectual property today. To examine the nature of the mismatch, I contrast two frameworks that both appear in contemporary debate about intellectual property: the traditional discourse, which focuses on innovation policy, and a newer, less clearly codified discourse that views intellectual property issues from the perspective of the politics of technology. To determine habitat characteristics that influence Sciurus niger (Eastern Fox Squirrel) abundance and distribution within a suburban/urban landscape in the midwestern United States, I documented the density and placement of fox squirrel leaf nests in 20 woodlots in the Indianapolis metropolitan area, Marion County, IN. The woodlots varied in size (0.94 to 19.5 ha), approximate age, shape, and degree of isolation from other woodlots and suitable squirrel habitat in the surrounding area. Only 8.0% of nests were located in a tree with another nest, and nests were randomly distributed in all but one woodlot, where they were uniformly dispersed. Nest …

Molecular Analysis In Rauvolfia Tetraphylla L. Using Rapd Markers, R. Mahesh, N. Nirmal Kumar, R. Mary Sujin

The Present study reveals the molecular variations in different accessions of Rauvolfia tetraphylla L. a medicinally important plant collected from five locations of the Tirunelveli hills in Tamilnadu, India. Moleuclar analysis was carried out using RAPD markers. Out of the five primers screened, a total of 27 scorable polymorphic markers were generated. The genetic distance between the population ranged from 0.0770 to 0.3514 and the genetic identity ranged from 0.7037 to 0.9259. The overall observed and effective number of alleles is about 0.5007 and 0.3690 respectively. Nei (1978) overall genetic diversity is 0.2034. It is clear that there is distinct …

The present study reveals the anti-diabetic effect in stomach of albino wistar rats using Gymnema sylvestre (Retz) R.Br. herbal powder. The histopatholoical and biochemical assays were carried out in organs and blood serum of stomach. The different concentration of G. sylvestre treated as 5, 10, 15, 20/gms/25 days. The effect of crude drugs in rats reduced the body weight and the diabetics was assessed in stomach by measuring the levels of selected blood parameters of protein, glucose, cholesterol, insulin and triglycerides and the effect of histopathology. The Transforming Growth Factor(TGF-) superfamily of signaling proteins regulate a diverse set of biological processes, including cell proliferation, adhesion, migration, apoptosis, differentiation and embryonic pattern formation. Because of its key role in these processes, a plethora of regulators are evolved to modulate TGF- signaling. The TGF- superfamily is comprised of about 30 ligands, which are commonly grouped into two broad sub-families based on their downstream signaling effectors: the TGF- /Nodal/Activin and BMP/GDF families. To identify novel molecules that regulate the intracellular BMP/Smad1 signaling pathway, we have undertaken a yeast two-hybrid screen using Smad1, and retrieved GTPBP2 as a binding partner …
