The presence of small numbers of multivalent ions in DNA-containing solutions results in strong attractive forces between DNA strands. Despite the biological importance of this interaction, e.g., DNA condensation, its physical origin remains elusive.Wecarried out a series of experiments to probe interactions between short DNA strands as small numbers of trivalent ions are included in a solution containing DNA and monovalent ions. Using resonant (anomalous) and nonresonant small angle x-ray scattering, we coordinated measurements of the number and distribution of each ion species around the DNA with the onset of attractive forces between DNA strands. DNA-DNA interactions occur as the …

Reducing Uncertainty In Ecological Niche Models With Ann Ensembles, Andrei Kirilenko, R. S. Hanley Jul 2008

Reducing Uncertainty In Ecological Niche Models With Ann Ensembles, Andrei Kirilenko, R. S. Hanley

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Transformation of spatial distributions of species is a key element for understanding global and regional impact of climate change on environment in the future. Yet little is known about current distributions of species, especially in relation with physical parameters of environment. This is primarily due to limited availability of data on species occurrences, which prevents reconstruction of their geographical distribution with standard methods of spatial statistics. To address this problem, specialized applications called distributional models, based on the hypothesis of fundamental niche, are being developed. We have built a new tool for predicting species’ geographical distributions based on presence-only data. …

Global Sensitivity Analysis Of Biochemical, Design And Operational Parameters Of The Benchmark Simulation Model No. 2, Lorenzo Benedetti, Damien J. Batstone, Bernard De Baets, Ingmar Nopens, Peter A. Vanrolleghem

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Wastewater treatment plant control and monitoring can help to achieve good effluent quality, in a complex, highly non-linear process. The Benchmark Simulation Model no. 2 (BSM2) is a useful tool to competitively evaluate plant-wide control on a long-term basis. A key component to characterise the system for control is outputparameter sensitivity. This paper brings the results of a global sensitivity analysis performed on the BSM2 model in its open loop version, by means of Monte Carlo (MC) experiments and linear regression. This study presents methods that were applied to make computationally demanding MC experiments on such a complex model feasible, …

Lessons Learned From Experiments In Auto-Calibration Of Large Scale Environmental And Hydrological Models, David Swayne, Markiyan Sloboda, Simon Hood, Vimal Sharma, William Booty, David Lam

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Recent work by the authors has identified the need to efficiently auto-calibrate models of considerable complexity, in order to investigate future water quality and quality concerns in the Great Lakes’ Basin. Initial results in the use of standard models such as AGNPS and SWAT have yielded somewhat disappointing results. The calibration process has been cumbersome, and predictions based on outputs from, say, a watershed model input to a lake circulation model have generally proven problematic: If the flows are correct, the loadings are not, and so forth.

A New Definition Of Minimum Sustainable Flow Based On Water Quality Modelling And Fuzzy Processing, Stefano Marsili-Libelli, A. Nocita, E. Giusti, M. Saccà Jul 2008

A New Definition Of Minimum Sustainable Flow Based On Water Quality Modelling And Fuzzy Processing, Stefano Marsili-Libelli, A. Nocita, E. Giusti, M. Saccà

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Water resources in temperate and Mediterranean regions are increasingly scarce and water authorities need efficient criteria for the management of this precious commodity, guaranteeing an amount of water which ensures the preservation of aquatic life. This minimal discharge is referred to as the Minimum Sustainable Flow (MSF) and has been subject to many differing definitions in differing contexts. Gradually the purely hydraulic definition, very popular in the past, has given way to more comprehensive indicators taking into account the river ecosystem, and fish in particular, leading to very popular methods such as the IFIM (Instream Flow Incremental Methodology). The drawback …

A Tale Of Germs, Storms, And Bombs: Geomorphology And Coral Assemblage Structure At Vieques (Puerto Rico) Compared To St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands), Bernhard Riegl, Ryan P. Moyer, Brian K. Walker, Kevin E. Kohler, David S. Gilliam, Richard E. Dodge

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The former U.S. Navy range at Vieques Island (Puerto Rico, United States) is now the largest national wildlife refuge in the Caribbean. We investigated the geomorphology and benthic assemblage structure to understand the status of the coral reefs. Coral assemblages were quantified at 24 sites at Vieques and at 6 sites at St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. These sites were chosen to represent the major zones of reef geomorphology. Sites consisted of two or three 21-m-long photo-quadrate belt transects. The results revealed surprisingly little differentiation in the coral assemblages within and between reefs of comparable geomorphological and oceanographic setting at …

Alcohol And Other Drugs, National Institute On Alcohol Abuse And Alcoholism Jul 2008

Alcohol And Other Drugs, National Institute On Alcohol Abuse And Alcoholism

United States Public Health Resources

Addictive disorders represent a major health issue both in the United States and worldwide. Because alcohol and drug dependence are likely to co-occur, exploring how alcohol addiction may relate to and interact with other addictions is important. Current research is exploring the underlying causes of addiction, and why alcohol and other drug use disorders co-occur so frequently, as well as how behavioral and drug therapies can best treat these disorders. There is no “magic bullet” for treating addiction—no treatment will work for everyone in every situation. More research is needed to identify effective treatments for different populations, especially youth, older …

Interaction Patterns In Mathematics Classrooms In Ogun State Secondary Schools, Adebole Ifamuyiwa, Abisola Lawani Jul 2008

Interaction Patterns In Mathematics Classrooms In Ogun State Secondary Schools, Adebole Ifamuyiwa, Abisola Lawani

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Interaction among people plays some vital roles in the life of individuals. This is evident in the way people relate with one-another at home, in the school, within the society, and among peer groups. In particular, the relationship between students and their teachers is expected to have a great effect on their lives. The way students learn any subject, Mathematics inclusive, will depend on the teacher’s pattern of classroom interaction. Teacher-student interaction in the classroom is a two-way process. Each participant influences the other’s behaviour; that is, the students condition their teachers’ behaviour and vice- versa. The concept of classroom …

Using Descriptive Feedback In A Sixth Grade Mathematics Classroom, Vicki J. Barry Jul 2008

Using Descriptive Feedback In A Sixth Grade Mathematics Classroom, Vicki J. Barry

Action Research Projects

In this action research of my 6th grade math class, I investigated whether or not my students would improve their ability to reflect on their learning process when they received descriptive feedback from a peer. I discovered the process of giving and receiving feedback was challenging for the students to initially learn, but eventually using the feedback was highly beneficial. Descriptive feedback allowed the students to learn and understand their mistakes immediately, which in turn improved their learning. In my action research, I also began to discover more ways to implement descriptive feedback in my instruction so it could be …

Latitudinal Variation In Leaf And Tree Traits Of The Mangrove Avicennia Germinans (Avicenniaceae) In The Central Region Of The Gulf Of Mexico, Rodrigo Méndez-Alonzo, Jorge López-Portillo, Victor H. Rivera-Monroy

Faculty Publications

The variation in leaf mass per area, leaf nutrients (% carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus), and the allometric relation between tree height and diameter of the black mangrove, Avicennia germinans, were explored in nine mangrove forests in similar environments along a 50 latitudinal gradient in the central region of the Gulf of Mexico, as indicated by a southward increase in temperature and precipitation. There was no correlation between leaf nitrogen or phosphorus content and latitude. Leaf mass per area and leaf carbon content were positively correlated with latitude and negatively correlated with temperature and annual rainfall, whereas asymptotic tree height and …

Tales, Techs And Territories: Private International Law, Globalization, And The Legal Construction Of Borderlessness On The Internet, Andrea Slane Jul 2008

Tales, Techs And Territories: Private International Law, Globalization, And The Legal Construction Of Borderlessness On The Internet, Andrea Slane

Law and Contemporary Problems

The Internet has often been described as "borderless," owing to the technical features of Internet communications that make content accessible to anyone with a network connection, regardless of his or her location. This borderlessness has been widely thought both to confound legal regimes relying on territoriality and to fundamentally create a crisis for jurisdictional determination of both public- and private-law matters. Here, Slane dissects the images of globalization at work in conflicts cases involving harms caused by postings on the Internet and demonstrates how these images work to produce a coherence for the field of conflicts as well as the …

Patents And Traditional Medicine: Digital Capture, Creative Legal Interventions And The Dialectics Of Knowledge Transformation, Chidi Oguamanam

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

This article examines the debate over the exclusion of indigenous or local knowledge forms from the global intellectual property system, and some of the current attempts to solve this problem. Using the lens of cultural cosmopolitanism, the article highlights important trends in the dialectics of developing countries' engagement with intellectual property and other collateral knowledge protection systems. The three sites at which this significant development is unfolding are: (1) the digitization of traditional medicinal knowledge through India's traditional knowledge digital library (TKDL) project; (2) a recent attempt at incorporating innovations in Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) in Taiwanese patent law; and …

Eukasimbiosys: A Stochastic Discrete Event-Based Simulation Software For In-Silico Study Of Insulin Signaling And Metabolism In Cardiac Myocytes, Amin Reza Mazloom

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The advent of human genome annotation in the early years of third millennium has enabled the scientist to interlink the processes of life at the molecular level. The coincidence of this breakthrough along with advances in computational technology and high-throughput experimental techniques has promoted the emergence of numerous -omics data resources. Although for years before such discovery, scientist believed that cellular processes are the product of interaction between genes and gene products; However, any effort to exploit a comprehensive picture of cellular processes had been obscured due to the knowledge gap that avoided to correlate the cellular processes at the …

Anti-Inflammatory Activity Of The Methanolic Extract Of Cinnamomum Sulphuratum Barks, Muthiah Maridass

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

In the present study, anti-inflammatory activity of the methanolic extract of Cinnamomum sulphuratum bark was investigated in Albino rats for carrageenan induced rat hind paw oedema using in vivo experimental animal model. A 200 mg dose of extract inhibited 71.43% of the carrageenan-induced oedema formation, while Ibuprofen inhibited 70.23%. The extract showed dose dependent anti-inflammatory activity, which was found to be statistically significant at p < 0.001%.

An Investigation Of Determinism And Chaotic Behavior In Flight Performance Data: A Chaos Theory And Nonlinear Time Series Analysis Approach, Lionel Blankson Amanfu Jul 2008

An Investigation Of Determinism And Chaotic Behavior In Flight Performance Data: A Chaos Theory And Nonlinear Time Series Analysis Approach, Lionel Blankson Amanfu

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Human flight performance data were investigated using non-linear time series analysis methods to determine deterministic chaotic behavior in the data. Using a sequence of steps of non-linear methods, four flight performance data were used to investigate for the existence of deterministic chaotic behavior. Results revealed that flight performance data may exhibit chaotic behavior. Results also showed a consistent low determinism value in all the data examined which is the defining characteristic of chaotic behavior. It was also found that the data originated from non-stationary process. The Maximal Lyapunov Exponent (MLE) value which indicate chaotic behavior exist in the data revealed …

Scleractinian Coral Recruitment To Reefs Physically Damaged By Ship Groundings, E. T. Rubin, Alison L. Moulding, Jose V. Lopez, David S. Gilliam, V. N. Kosmynin, Richard E. Dodge

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The southeast Florida reef system faces a number of stress factors, among which ship groundings are one of the most physically damaging. Portions of the Florida reef tract located near Port Everglades, Broward County, Florida, USA have been damaged by ship groundings. In 2004, physical damage of more than 30,000 m2 was caused by the groundings of two large cargo ships, the MV Eastwind and MV Federal Pescadores. The present study was designed to measure differences of scleractinian coral recruitment patterns (recruit diversity and richness) and rates to these injured sites in comparison to undamaged reef sites. Coral …

Comparison Of Bacterial Diversity Within The Coral Reef Sponge, Axinella Corrugata, And The Encrusting Coral Erythropodium Caribaeorum, Jose V. Lopez, L. K. Ranzer, A. Ledger, B. Schoch, A. Duckworth, P. J. Mccarthy, R. G. Kerr

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

We compared the Caribbean reef sponge, Axinella corrugata, with the Caribbean reef coral, Erythropodium caribaeorum for differences in their resident microbial communities. This cursory survey of bacterial diversity applied 16S rRNA gene sequences. Over 100 culture-independent sequences were generated from five different Axinella 16S rRNA libraries, and compared with 69 cultured isolates. The cultureindependent 16S rDNA clones displayed a higher diversity of Proteobacteria, including “uncultured” or “unknown” representatives from the Deltaproteobacteria. Arcobacterium, and Cyanobacteria were also found. We have also confirmed that Axinella sponges appeared to host specific microbial symbionts, similar to the previously identified clones termed “OSO” …
