Grassland Birds In Natural And Cultivated Grasslands In The Northern Campos Of Uruguay: Diversity Patterns, Responses To Vegetation Structure, And Nest Survival, Adrian Bruno Azpiroz

Dissertations

Grassland bird populations are declining in many regions of the world as a consequence of habitat modification but research efforts have been concentrated in North America and Europe. In the Neotropics, however, many aspects of grassland bird ecology remain virtually unexplored. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of habitat modification on the distribution, abundance, and reproductive success of grassland birds in the Northern Campos of Uruguay. The study focused on birds that inhabit four grassland habitats which differed in terms of agricultural management in the Northern Campos of Uruguay. First, distance sampling was used to characterize …

A Developmental, Phylogenetic And Taxonomic Study On The Moss Genus Taxithelium Mitt. (Pylaisiadelphaceae), Paulo Saraiva Camara

Dissertations

The family Sematophyllaceae is probably the most diverse Hypnales in the tropics and one of the most complex and taxonomically confused. This thesis comprises three parts: 1, a micromorphological study of papilla development in Taxithelium and relatives; 2, a phylogenetic study of Taxithelium; and 3, a revision of Taxithelium subgenus Vernieri. 1. I present data on the structure and development of leaf cell papillae in different Sematophyllaceae. Two kinds of papillae are recognized. One is dome-shaped to conical tapering to a firmly rounded apex (?conical?), whereas the other presents a more flaccid, baggy appearance, and is often flat-topped and wider …

Population Genetics Of Island Endemics: Neutral And Major Histocompatibility Loci, Jennifer Lynn Bollmer Jul 2008

Population Genetics Of Island Endemics: Neutral And Major Histocompatibility Loci, Jennifer Lynn Bollmer

Dissertations

Island archipelagoes are ideal for the study of microevolutionary forces due to their multiple, closely related but geographically disjunct populations. I used both neutral and major histocompatibility complex (MHC) loci to determine the population genetic structures of bird species endemic to the Galapagos Islands. MHC molecules recognize foreign pathogens in the body, and these loci are known for their high degree of genetic variability maintained by natural selection. Small island populations are predicted to have reduced genetic variability due to the effects of genetic drift; however, selection may be strong enough to prevent the loss of variability at MHC loci. …

Mechanistic Studies Of Specific Dna Cleavage By Pvuii Restriction Endonuclease, Xie Fuqian Jul 2008

Mechanistic Studies Of Specific Dna Cleavage By Pvuii Restriction Endonuclease, Xie Fuqian

Dissertations

PvuII restriction endonuclease is a homodimeric protein which recognizes and cleaves the palindromic sequence (CAG?CTG) in the presence of Mg(II) ions. Starting with PvuII as a model system, pKa calculations with crystallographically defined metal ligated water are applied to PD?D/ExK motif metallonucleases in order to investigate the activation of nucleophile in metal dependent DNA hydrolysis. These results establish the electrostatic contributions of the metal ions and the conserved Lys in lowering water pKa. The calculated pKa values of metal ligands have been used to simulate the pH dependence of Mg(II) binding to PvuII. The bell shaped pH-rate profile is dissected …

Differential Expression And Functional Characterization Of Alpha3 Beta2 Neuronal Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors, John Hideo Mizukawa Jul 2008

Differential Expression And Functional Characterization Of Alpha3 Beta2 Neuronal Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors, John Hideo Mizukawa

Theses and Dissertations

Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are expressed in both the periperhal and central nervous systems, and are involved in pre-, post-, and non-synaptic control of neuronal activation. In the brain, these receptors play an important role in a variety of physiological processes such as cognition, development, learning, and memory formation. Malfunction of these receptors have been implicated in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease (AD), schizophrenia, and Parkinson's disease. To date, 17 different nAChR subunits, including α2-α7 and β2-β4, have been cloned that can form homo- and/or hetero-pentameric ionotropic receptors. The unique combinations of subunit pentamers manifest in distinct functional receptors. …

Characterization Of Phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-Trisphosphate Subcellular Localization During Endocytosis In Entamoeba Histolytica, Yevgeniya Byekova Jul 2008

Characterization Of Phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-Trisphosphate Subcellular Localization During Endocytosis In Entamoeba Histolytica, Yevgeniya Byekova

All Theses

Entamoeba histolytica is a protozoan parasite that causes amoebic dysentery and liver abscess. Currently, the World Health Organization estimates that amoebic dysentery results in 40,000-100,000 deaths annually worldwide, which places amoebiasis second only to malaria as a leading cause of death due to parasitic infection. The pathogenesis of invasive amoebiasis depends on the parasite's ability to carry out endocytosis in the host's bowel lumen enabling it to colonize the digestive tract. The pathogen is contracted by the ingestion of its multinucleate cysts. Upon excystation in the small intestine, motile trophozoites are released into the bowel lumen, where bacteria, erythrocytes, and …

Biomechanical Evaluation Of Two Methods Of Humeral Shaft Fixation, Joshua Catanzarite Jul 2008

Biomechanical Evaluation Of Two Methods Of Humeral Shaft Fixation, Joshua Catanzarite

All Theses

Biomechanical evaluations of fracture fixation devices attempt to determine implant performance by approximating the in vivo conditions. This performance is affected by many factors and relies on the complex bone-implant interface. Biomechanical tests can be designed in a variety of ways in order to evaluate device performance with respect to any number of these bone-implant interactions. Standardized tests, designed by groups such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), are often designed either to determine the performance of a specific type of fixation device or for direct comparison between different devices. Additionally, many biomechanical evaluations are designed for …

Assessing Multivariate Heritability Through Nonparametric Methods, Benjamin Alan Carper Jul 2008

Assessing Multivariate Heritability Through Nonparametric Methods, Benjamin Alan Carper

Theses and Dissertations

The similarities between generations of living subjects are often quantified by heritability. By distinguishing genotypic variation, or variation due to parental pairings, from phenotypic variation, or normal intraspecies variation, the heritability of traits can be estimated. Due to the multivariate nature of many traits, such as size and shape, computation of heritability can be difficult. Also, assessment of the variation of the heritability estimate is extremely difficult. This study uses nonparametric methods, namely the randomization test and the bootstrap, to obtain both a measure of the extremity of the observed heritability and an assessment of the uncertainty.

The Acceptability Of Treatments For Adolescent Depression To A Multi-Ethnic Sample Of Girls, Nicole Caporino Jul 2008

The Acceptability Of Treatments For Adolescent Depression To A Multi-Ethnic Sample Of Girls, Nicole Caporino

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

An efficacious treatment is diminished in value if clients will not seek it out and adhere to it (Kazdin, 1978). Thus, the acceptability of a treatment to consumers is an important indicator of the quality/effectiveness of the treatment (APA, 2002). The purpose of this study was to examine acceptability of treatments for depression to adolescent females and to explore factors that might be associated with acceptability. Sixty-seven high school students (36 Hispanic and 31 non-Hispanic White) were recruited from communities in New Jersey and Florida, and interviewed by telephone. Participants were presented with a vignette describing a depressed adolescent and …

Metamorphosis: Transforming Non-Designers Into Designers, Martin A Siegel, Erik Stolterman Jul 2008

Metamorphosis: Transforming Non-Designers Into Designers, Martin A Siegel, Erik Stolterman

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In this paper we make the case that there is today a growing number of educational settings experiencing challenges when it comes to transforming non-designers into designers, and in particular, interaction designers. We see this development as a consequence of an increased awareness and recognition of what broadly could be labeled as a design perspective. We examine the transformational process, the metamorphosis, by which non-designer students become interaction designers. We identify and describe the barriers that make it difficult for the students to move through this transformational process. We also propose some pedagogical approaches that can reduce the barriers and …

Darwin At The Drugstore? Testing The Biological Fitness Of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria, Alan L. Gillen, Sarah Anderson Jul 2008

Darwin At The Drugstore? Testing The Biological Fitness Of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria, Alan L. Gillen, Sarah Anderson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The issue of antibiotic resistance in bacteria is growing. For example, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a leading human pathogen. New strains of MRSA are resistant to methicillin and numerous other antibiotics, placing the patient in significant danger. Indeed, the Centers for Disease Control revealed in 2007 that the number of deaths due to MRSA exceeded that of AIDS in the United States. It is no wonder that antibiotic resistance is one of the most significant and important health care issues. The ability of bacterial pathogens to evade traditional antibiotics is faster than the drug makers’ ability to make new …

Anxiety And Emotion Dysregulation In Daily Life: An Experience-Sampling Comparison Of Social Phobia And Generalized Anxiety Disorder Analogue Groups, Nathan Alan Miller Jul 2008

Anxiety And Emotion Dysregulation In Daily Life: An Experience-Sampling Comparison Of Social Phobia And Generalized Anxiety Disorder Analogue Groups, Nathan Alan Miller

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Recent research suggests the presence of both common and disorder-specific emotion regulation deficits across the anxiety disorders (Turk et al., 2005), including those that may be uniquely characteristic of social phobia (SP; Kashdan & Breen, 2008; Kashdan & Steger, 2006; Turk et al., 2005). The purpose of the present study was to replicate and expand upon this growing literature in important directions. The initial portion of this study involved administration of relevant self-report symptom, emotion, and emotion regulation survey measures to a large undergraduate sample (N = 784). Scores on several symptom measures were used to create a SP analogue …

Purposive Pattern Recognition: The Nature Of Visual Choice In Graphic Design, John Z Langrish, Maria Abu-Risha Jul 2008

Purposive Pattern Recognition: The Nature Of Visual Choice In Graphic Design, John Z Langrish, Maria Abu-Risha

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Every pamphlet, brochure, booklet, advert, package, poster, etc that has ever been produced involved a visual choice made by a human being - even if the choice were restricted to ‘doing it like the last time' or ‘copy this one'. Whether graphic designer, information designer, advertising executive, programmer, printer or the Managing Director's wife, someone decided this picture, this type face, this layout etc rather than some available alternative. How are visual choices made? And, in particular, how do professional graphic designers make choices between visual alternatives. It was decided to probe this question by interviewing professional designers and looking …

The Brazilian Experience In Design For Health: Interdisciplinary And Bioethics, Fernanda Alves Da Silva Bonatti, José Américo Bonatti, Maria Cecilia Loschiavo Dos Santos

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Health design in Brazil has been characterized historically by replacing imported products with others that are locally manufactured on a small scale. The formation of interdisciplinary groups has never been submitted to specific norms, particularly at universities. In January 2007 the Health Design Group was created at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, a partnership between people from the design group at the authors' Institutions: Architecture and Urbanism School and School of Medicine. Aiming at documenting some important experiences on the Brazilian scene to provide historical and methodological subsidies for research done by this group, a survey was …

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper reports insights gained from an exploration of performance-based techniques to improve the design of relationships between people and responsive machines. It draws on the Emergent Objects project and specifically addresses notions of embodiment as employed in the field of performance as a means to prototype and develop a robotic agent, SpiderCrab, designed to promote expressive interaction of device and human dancer, in order to achieve ‘performative merging'. The significance of the work is to bring further knowledge of embodiment to bear on the development of human-technological interaction in general. In doing so, it draws on discursive and interpretive …

Understanding Older Vehicle Users: An Interpretative Approach, Chao Zhao, Vesna Popovic, Luis Ferreira, Xiaobo Lu Jul 2008

Understanding Older Vehicle Users: An Interpretative Approach, Chao Zhao, Vesna Popovic, Luis Ferreira, Xiaobo Lu

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Future adaptations in vehicle design should be linked in some parts to the age-related changes often faced by the older users. The aim of this research is to investigate the multiple age-related changes of Chinese older vehicle users in order to assist designers to better understand current and future older users' needs. Although qualitative interpretative approaches have rarely been applied in the field of traffic gerontology research, they are widely used in current design research to explore persons' lived experiences, behaviours and emotions. Therefore, this study employed qualitative research methods consisting of observation, interview, travel logbook and co-discovery to explore …

The Usage And Evaluation Of Anthropomorphic Form In Robot Design, Jeong-Gun Choi, Myungsuk Kim Jul 2008

The Usage And Evaluation Of Anthropomorphic Form In Robot Design, Jeong-Gun Choi, Myungsuk Kim

DRS Biennial Conference Series

There are numerous examples illustrating the application of human shape in everyday products. Usage of anthropomorphic form has long been a basic design strategy, particularly in the design of intelligent service robots. As such, it is desirable to use anthropomorphic form not only in aesthetic design but also in interaction design. Proceeding from how anthropomorphism in various domains has taken effect on human perception, we assumed that anthropomorphic form used in appearance and interaction design of robots enriches the explanation of its function and creates familiarity with robots. From many cases we have found, misused anthropomorphic form lead to user …

Retail Design: Lighting As An Atmospheric Tool, Creating Experiences Which Influence Consumers' Mood And Behaviour In Commercial Spaces, Katelijn Quartier, Henri Christiaans, Koenraad Van Cleempoel

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Retail design is no new discipline, but a scientific approach is of rather recent date. Since atmosphere has been proven to have an influence on consumer's behaviour from a marketing point of view, this Ph.D. focuses on the designers' perspective. This paper addresses one aspect of atmosphere: lighting and its influence on consumers' mood and buying behaviour. Following an introduction in the discipline of retail design, we discuss the notion of ‘atmosphere' and its relationship to lighting. We also develop a theoretical framework as a first part of a three-part process: literature review, experiments and validation. This first part includes …

Design Dis-Integration Silent, Partial, And Disparate Design, John Stevens, James Moultrie, Nathan Crilly Jul 2008

Design Dis-Integration Silent, Partial, And Disparate Design, John Stevens, James Moultrie, Nathan Crilly

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Michael Porter's frameworks for analysing and planning competitive differentiation (Porter 1980, 1985) are established ‘textbook' tools, widely taught to business students today. As the claim of design's strategic importance is increasingly heard, we ask where does design fit in established strategy thinking? This paper documents a proposed conceptual model based on Porter's value chain model for strategic planning. The concept outlined is the result of the first stage of a larger study of design's potential role at strategic level and the difficulties faced by organisations in exploiting design strategically. This exploratory phase comprised a review of literature on design management …
