Risedronate Prevents Early Bone Loss Resulting From Whole-Body Irradiation, Eric Livingston Jul 2008

Risedronate Prevents Early Bone Loss Resulting From Whole-Body Irradiation, Eric Livingston

All Theses

Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by a reduction in bone strength resulting in an overall increase in the risk of fracture. There are many factors that contribute to the development of this condition, including ionizing radiation exposure. Declines in bone volume and trabecular micro-architecture have been found following exposure to multiple types of radiation. Past research has implicated reduction of osteoblast function and changes to vasculature as the primary sources of bone deterioration. Recently, an early increase in osteoclast number was observed following exposure to low-energy X-rays, identifying an increase in resorption as a possible cause and potential target for …

According to the different phenotypes and distinct patterns of gene expression, macrophages can be subdivided into two types: M1 and M2. The M1 macrophages, which are activated through the classical pathway, have a proinflammatory characteristic, providing an in-front defense line against different kinds of pathogens as well as malignant cells. On the other hand, the M2 macrophages are immunosuppressive and instead can promote tumor growth and dissemination. The solid tumor tissues are often infiltrated with a large number of macrophages, the so-called tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs). TAMs, which are polarized into M2 phenotype under the tumor microenvironment, promote tumor progression by …

Self-Organization": A New Metaphor To Understand The Interdependences Of The Organizations And Their Environments, Tarek Mohamed Ali Jul 2008

Self-Organization": A New Metaphor To Understand The Interdependences Of The Organizations And Their Environments, Tarek Mohamed Ali

Business Administration

Self-organization metaphors have recently emerged to enrich research on organizational environment in particular, with respect to the networking view that presents organizational environment as a complex web of interactions among groups of organizations. The network analysis promotes the group members’ sensitivity to the variety in environmental demands. In an attempt to clarify how self-organization enhances the group’s sensitivity, we propose the interdisciplinary autopoietic and habitus-field models. The proposed self-organization models allow portraying business organizations as networks of decision communications and integrated partners. Self-referential and self-reflexivity processes have been utilized by the models to guide a group of decision makers and …

Fate And Transport Of Steroid Hormones In The Environment, Tolessa Deksissa Jul 2008

Fate And Transport Of Steroid Hormones In The Environment, Tolessa Deksissa

2008

This study reviews the current knowledge of the occurrence, fate and transport of 17ßestradiol and testosterone in the environment. Factors and processes that affect the mobility of these compounds in the environment are also highlighted. It appears that these hormones together with their metabolites may persist in soil or sediments for several months, and their mobility and behavior in the environment need to be well understood.

Fpga Acceleration Of A Cortical And A Matched Filter-Based Algorithm, Kenneth Rice Jul 2008

Fpga Acceleration Of A Cortical And A Matched Filter-Based Algorithm, Kenneth Rice

All Theses

Digital image processing is a widely used and diverse field. It is used in a broad array of areas such as tracking and detection, object avoidance, computer vision, and numerous other applications. For many image processing tasks, the computations can become time consuming. Therefore, a means for accelerating the computations would be beneficial. Using that as motivation, this thesis examines the acceleration of two distinctly different image processing applications. The first image processing application examined is a recent neocortex inspired cognitive model geared towards pattern recognition as seen in the visual cortex. For this model, both software and reconfigurable logic …

Spatial And Temporal Dynamics Of Lekking Behavior And Female Mate Choice In The Blue-Crowned Manakin (Lepidothrix Coronata, Aves: Pipridae), Renata Duraes Ribeiro

Dissertations

In lekking species, males aggregate at display grounds (?leks?) that females visit to copulate. Lekking systems are non-resource-based and males vary widely in reproductive output. This dissertation investigates how spatial and temporal factors influence lekking dynamics and female mate choice in the blue-crowned manakin Lepidothrix coronata. The first chapter deals with spatial dynamics of lekking behavior, and investigates whether leks are formed by the establishment of males on sites of high female density (?hotspot hypothesis?). Predictive maps of female spatial distribution were built based on field data and contrasted to the lek distribution. Leks were located in sites where males …

Physiological And Molecular Characterization Of Genetic Competence In Streptococcus Sanguinis, Alejandro Rodriguez Jul 2008

Physiological And Molecular Characterization Of Genetic Competence In Streptococcus Sanguinis, Alejandro Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations

The ability of bacteria to assimilate free DNA from the environment is known as competence. Though many studies have focused on competence regulation in Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus gordonii, Streptococcus sanguinis has yet to be examined. Physiological characterization of competence in S. sanguinis strain SK36 and its comC mutant, JFP41, led to the genome-wide transcriptional analysis of cells induced to competence via addition of competence-stimulating peptide (CSP). A total of 128 genes were induced at least 2-fold, 74 of which were classified as either “early” or “late” based on their induction patterns. Expression patterns were verified using qRT-PCR. This study …

China Around The World: Australia, Rowan Callick

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

It’s hard for me to compare how Australians and others cover China, in part because we rarely actually meet each other to swap notes, except for the occasional encounter via the Foreign Correspondents Club of China (an admirable organization, but one without formal standing in China because it lacks—for obvious reasons on both sides—the sponsorship of a party or government body) and in part because the whole structure of journalism in China does not bring reporters together frequently, as it does in most other countries.

I sometimes go for weeks without encountering another journalist. For China has few press conferences, …

Selenium is an essential dietary element with antioxidant roles in immune regulation, but there is little understanding of how this element acts at the molecular level in host defense and inflammatory disease. Selenium is incorporated into the amino acid selenocysteine (Sec), which in turn is inserted into selenoproteins in a manner dependent on Sec tRNA[Ser]Sec. To investigate the molecular mechanism that links selenium to T cell immunity, we generated mice with selenoprotein-less T cells by cell type-specific ablation of the Sec tRNA[Ser]Sec gene (trsp). Herein, we show that these mutant mice exhibit decreased pools of …

Mechanical Response Of Active Gels, Tanniemola B. Liverpool, M. Cristina Marchetti, J-F. Joanny, J. Prost

Physics - All Scholarship

We study a model of an active gel of cross-linked semiflexible filaments with additional active linkers such as myosin II clusters. We show that the coupling of the elasticity of the semiflexible filaments to the mechanical properties of the motors leads to contractile behavior of the gel, in qualitative agreement with experimental observations. The motors, however, soften the zero frequency elastic constant of the gel. When the collective motor dynamics is incorporated in the model, a stiffening of the network at high frequencies is obtained. The frequency controlling the crossover between low and high frequency network elasticity is estimated in …

Deriving Operational Principles For The Design Of Engaging Learning Experiences, Richard Heywood Swan Jul 2008

Deriving Operational Principles For The Design Of Engaging Learning Experiences, Richard Heywood Swan

Theses and Dissertations

The issue of learner engagement is an important question for education and for instructional design. It is acknowledged that computer games in general are engaging. Thus, one possible solution to learner engagement is to integrate computer games into education; however, the literature indicates that pedagogical, logistical and political barriers remain. Another possible solution is to derive principles for the design of engaging experiences from a critical examination of computer game design. One possible application of the derived design principles is that instruction may be designed to be inherently more engaging. The purpose of this dissertation was to look for operational …

Comparison Of Guided And Open Inquiry Instruction In A High School Physics Classroom, Brett M. Guisti Jul 2008

Comparison Of Guided And Open Inquiry Instruction In A High School Physics Classroom, Brett M. Guisti

Theses and Dissertations

This study compared two levels of inquiry in high school physics classrooms over a year-long course. One class fit well the definition of guided-inquiry and the other matched common descriptions of open-inquiry. Four sections of introductory physics at Lone Peak High School in Highland, Utah were randomly divided into two sections for each treatment. The majority of students in all classes were sophomores with relatively few juniors and seniors. The guided-inquiry classes followed the Modeling Instruction Program developed at Arizona State University, while the open-inquiry classes were be based on an approach used by Wolff-Michael Roth, at the University of …

Luminex Microsphere Immunoassay Offers An Improved Method In Testing For Antibodies To Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus In Sentinel Chicken Sera, Kelly Ann Fitzpatrick

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus has a human mortality rate of 30% of those cases diagnosed, while 30% of those surviving infection remain with neurological sequelae for life (CDC.gov, 2007).

The use of sentinel chickens for surveillance of arboviruses that are known to use birds as a reservoir host, such as St. Louis Encephalitis (SLE), West Nile (WN) virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and Highlands J (HJ) virus, in Florida began with the Sentinel Chicken Arboviral Surveillance Network in 1978 (Day and Stark, 1996). This network enables the activation of an early warning system for citizens, as well as, county epidemiologists …

Multilocus Virulence Typing Of Clinical And Environmental Vibrio Vulnificus Isolates, Katrina V. Gordon Jul 2008

Multilocus Virulence Typing Of Clinical And Environmental Vibrio Vulnificus Isolates, Katrina V. Gordon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The bacterium Vibrio vulnificus is an autochthonous inhabitant of estuarine waters and also found in shellfish such as oysters. It is a human pathogen of importance in the seafood industry, and can also infect recreational water users. Currently, recognized methods of detection rely upon isolation of pure cultures which requires at least 24 hours. To reduce the time needed for identification of the pathogen and simultaneously ascertain the virulence potential of the strains present, real-time PCR assays and sample processing procedures were developed (Chapter 1). These assays discriminate between type A (environmental, generally lower virulence) and type B (clinical, higher …

Active And Passive Microwave Radiometry For Transcutaneous Measurements Of Temperature And Oxygen Saturation, Thomas A. Ricard Jul 2008

Active And Passive Microwave Radiometry For Transcutaneous Measurements Of Temperature And Oxygen Saturation, Thomas A. Ricard

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this work we explore two novel uses of microwave technology in biomedical applications. Introductory material on the electrical properties of biological tissues is presented to form the groundwork for the basic theory behind both techniques.

First, we develop a technique that uses 60 GHz signals to detect changes in blood oxidation levels. Several atmospheric propagation models are adapted to predict oxygen resonance spectra near this frequency. We are able to predict and observe the changes in these levels as the blood ages up to 48 hours. Identical testing procedures performed using arterial blood gas (ABG) calibration samples with controlled …
