Synthesis Of Α-Hydroxy And Fluoro Phosphonates And Cyclic Ether-Containing Natural Products, Nongnuch Sutivisedsak
Synthesis Of Α-Hydroxy And Fluoro Phosphonates And Cyclic Ether-Containing Natural Products, Nongnuch Sutivisedsak
Dissertations
A number of important classes of natural product (eg. amphidinolide C, (-)-centrolobine, etc) contain common structural features of tetrahydrofurans and tetrahydropyrans. This study involved the development of stereoselective mothods for the synthesis of tetrahydrofurans and tetrahydropyrans including the application of allylic hydroxy phosphonates and their derivatives as chiral, non racemic building blocks for the synthesis of biological active molecules. The enantiomeric excess of non racemic α-hydroxy phosphonates and carbonate derivatives prepared via the asymmetric Pudovik reaction can be improved by kinetic resolution. Both chemical and enzyme catalysts were utilized in the kinetic resolution of phosphonates. Enantioselective acylation of a variety …

Chloroplast Fe(Iii) Chelate Reductase Activity Is Essential For Seedling Viability Under Iron Limiting Conditions, Jeeyon Jeong, Christopher Cohu, Loubna Kerkeb, Marinus Pilon, Erin L. Connolly, Mary Lou Guerinot
Dartmouth Scholarship
Photosynthesis, heme biosynthesis, and Fe-S cluster assembly all take place in the chloroplast, and all require iron. Reduction of iron via a membrane-bound Fe(III) chelate reductase is required before iron transport across membranes in a variety of systems, but to date there has been no definitive genetic proof that chloroplasts have such a reduction system. Here we report that one of the eight members of the Arabidopsis ferric reductase oxidase (FRO) family, FRO7, localizes to the chloroplast. Chloroplasts prepared from fro7 loss-of-function mutants have 75% less Fe(III) chelate reductase activity and contain 33% less iron per microgram of chlorophyll than …
Investigation Of A Photosynthetically Aerated Cathode In A Mfc, Derek Little
Investigation Of A Photosynthetically Aerated Cathode In A Mfc, Derek Little
All Theses
A microbial fuel cell (MFC) creates an environment that facilitates the conversion of electron donor compounds into electrical current through the oxidizing powers of microbial growth. Within the anode of a MFC bacteria grow oxidizing organic compounds while in the cathode oxygen is reduced. The goal of a MFC is to achieve respiration under anaerobic conditions having electrodes serve as intermediate electron acceptor for bacteria in the anode and shuttle electrons through a circuit to the cathode reducing a terminal electron acceptor.
Waste from the biological production of hydrogen from agricultural peach was explored for use within the anode of …

Financial Impact Analysis Of Ipm With Conventional Sampling And Ipm With Binomial Sequential Sampling Method To Traditionally Operated Farms For Collards, 2007, Myra Clarisse Ferrer
All Theses
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) has been very successful in directing farming to a more environment-friendly production. However, the extent of its economic impact is an equally-important question. This study looks at the amounts of savings and potential market profitability of using IPM in South Carolina collard production considering alternative scouting methods. Conventional sampling (CS) and binomial sequential scouting method (SSM), a recently developed scouting system for traditionally operated collard farms are compared. SSM is geared towards a more economical execution of scouting without forfeiting the effectiveness of the process. Financial analysis specifically costs and returns methods and sensitivity analysis on …
The Application Of Bacteriophage For The Elimination Of Pathogenic Bacteria In Compost, Spencer Heringa
The Application Of Bacteriophage For The Elimination Of Pathogenic Bacteria In Compost, Spencer Heringa
All Theses
The demand for organically grown produce is rapidly rising in the United States, resulting in a resurgence of natural fertilizers, such as animal waste, being used in agriculture. Currently, there are guidelines set by the USDA for the proper processing of fecal materials through composting; however food-borne illnesses associated with fresh-produce have become more and more common. Research is being conducted toward developing more effective treatments of fecal waste to reduce the survival of harmful bacteria. One possible form of treatment is through the use of bacteriophages that are able to 'seek and destroy' specific bacteria. The objectives of this …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Polyionic Hydrogels, Pooja Desai
Theses and Dissertations
In this study we describe novel polyionic dendrimer – PEG hydrogels for drug delivery. Hydrogels have a crosslinked insoluble network of polymer chains, which have found many applications including drug delivery and tissue regeneration. Dendrimers provide an ideal platform for drug delivery as they possess a well-defined highly branched nanoscale architecture with many reactive surface groups. Their highly clustered surface groups allow for targeted drug delivery and high drug payload to enhance therapeutic effectiveness. This study presented a new type of polyionic hydrogels based on dendrimers with potential applications in drug delivery and tissue engineering. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) with various …
The Genetic Structure And Mating System Of The Buffy Flower Bat (Erophylla Sezekorni), Kevin Lager Murray
The Genetic Structure And Mating System Of The Buffy Flower Bat (Erophylla Sezekorni), Kevin Lager Murray
Open Access Dissertations
The buffy flower bat (Erophylla sezekorni) is a neotropical leaf-nosed bat (Phyllostomidae) that is endemic to the Greater Antilles. Although this species is one of the most common and abundant species of mammals in the West Indies, very little is known about its ecology and evolution. To address this deficiency, I studied the genetic structure and mating system of the buffy flower bat on several islands throughout its range, focusing a more intensive study on the island of Exuma, Bahamas. I first studied the effects of ocean barriers on genetic diversification within Erophylla and two related endemic genera of endemic …

The assemblage structure and vertical distribution of deep-pelagic fishes relative to a mid-ocean ridge system is described from an acoustic and discrete-depth trawling survey conducted as part of the international Census of Marine Life field project MAR-ECO. A survey along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), covering the full depth range (0 to >3000 m) with a combination of gear types, was conducted to understand the role of the pelagic fauna in ecosystem dynamics. A total of 205 fish species were collected by midwater sampling. Depth was by far the primary assemblage composition determinant, with ridge section secondary. The dominant ichthyofaunal component …

Elastic Theory Of Defects In Toroidal Crystals, Mark Bowick, Luca Giomi
Elastic Theory Of Defects In Toroidal Crystals, Mark Bowick, Luca Giomi
Physics - All Scholarship
We report a comprehensive analysis of the ground state properties of axisymmetric toroidal crystals based on the elastic theory of defects on curved substrates. The ground state is analyzed as a function of the aspect ratio of the torus, which provides a non-local measure of the underlying Gaussian curvature, and the ratio of the defect core-energy to the Young modulus. Several structural features are discussed, including a spectacular example of curvature-driven amorphization in the limit of the aspect ratio approaching one. The outcome of the elastic theory is then compared with the results of a numerical study of a system of …
Experimental Framework For The Position Control Of Magnetic Microfibers, Sriram Ravindren
Experimental Framework For The Position Control Of Magnetic Microfibers, Sriram Ravindren
All Theses
Magnetic microfibers have been developed in recent years with potential applications to a large number of fields, from MEMS to microfluidics to bio-chemical analyses. Magnetic microfibers based on polymer material like polypropylene and cellulose has been developed at Clemson University that are hollow cylindrical filaments internally coated with superparamagnetic nanoparticles. This internal coating provides the fiber with magnetic properties that allow them to be externally controlled using magnetic fields from a distance. These fibers can align with the external magnetic fields under constraints imposed by elastic properties and boundary conditions. Current work in this field is primarily focused on the …
Sequencing, Sub-Cloning, Expression And Purification Of 2-Hydroxychromene-2-Carboxylate Isomerase From Sphingomonas Paucimobilis Epa505, Aaron Brown
All Theses
Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous toxic pollutants that are slow to degrade naturally and costly to remediate artificially. Several species of bacteria have been shown to degrade PAHs, including Sphingomonas paucimobilis EPA505. The aerobic bacterial catabolism of the PAH naphthalene has been studied in several PAH metabolizing bacteria but never in EPA505. This study addresses this deficiency by identifying and characterizing one of the genes for naphthalene metabolism--nahD. NahD codes for the enzyme 2-hydroxychromene-2-carboxylate (HCCA) isomerase, which is the fourth of six enzymes in the upper catabolic pathway of naphthalene.
In this study, the gene nahD is identified …
Loading Mechanics In Femora Of Tiger Salamanders (Ambystoma Tigrinum) And Tegu Lizards (Tupinambis Merianae): Implications For The Evolution Of Limb Bone Design, Kathryn Wright
All Theses
The limb bones of tetrapods exhibit a wide range of shapes and sizes. Because locomotion is one of the most frequent and demanding behaviors in which limbs are used, this diversity in limb structure and design is frequently attributed to variation in the mechanical loading patterns that bones experience during locomotion. Limb bones are usually able to withstand loads much higher than they would normally experience before they fail. This margin of protection is known as a 'safety factor.' High safety factors would provide limb bones substantial insurance against failure, but could also make limb bones more costly to grow, …
Temperament, Parenting, And Prosocial Behaviors: Applying A New Interactive Theory Of Prosocial Development, Meredith Mcginley
Temperament, Parenting, And Prosocial Behaviors: Applying A New Interactive Theory Of Prosocial Development, Meredith Mcginley
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The primary purpose of the current study was to examine whether theoretically based interactions between dimensions of children’s temperament and maternal socialization predicted children’s and early adolescents’ prosocial (i.e, helping) behaviors. A new theory was derived by examining how an existing interactive model of early moral development, Kochanska’s (1993) theory of early conscience internalization, would apply to the prediction of prosocial behaviors. Aspects of child temperament and maternal socialization were thought to operate in a different manner from Kochanska’s theory. Unlike early conscience internalization, fearful temperament and parental punishment do not appear to promote prosocial behavior. Moreover, it was thought …

Background: Despite being one of the most studied families within the Carnivora, the phylogenetic relationships among the members of the bear family (Ursidae) have long remained unclear. Widely divergent topologies have been suggested based on various data sets and methods.
Results: We present a fully resolved phylogeny for ursids based on ten complete mitochondrial genome sequences from all eight living and two recently extinct bear species, the European cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) and the American giant short-faced bear (Arctodus simus). The mitogenomic data yield a well-resolved topology for ursids, with the sloth bear at the basal …

When lidar pulses travel through a short path that includes a relatively high concentration of aerosols, scattering phenomena can alter the power and temporal properties of the pulses significantly, causing undesirable effects in the received pulse. In many applications the design of the lidar transmitter and receiver must consider adverse environmental aerosol conditions to ensure the desired performance. We present an analytical model of lidar system operation when the optical path includes aerosols for use in support of instrument design, simulations, and system evaluation. The model considers an optical path terminated with a solid object, although it can also be …

Dendrimer Supramolecular Assembly For Gene Delivery, Karthikeyan Pasupathy
All Theses
Dendrimers have found many applications in the fields of polymer science, biophysics, nanomedicine and the petroleum industry. Poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) was studied as a model dendrimer and squalane as a model hydrocarbon. The interaction between PAMAM and squalane is pH dependent. Specifically, at low or neutral pH the squalane is found on the periphery of the PAMAM while at high pH the hydrocarbon is entrapped inside the PAMAM molecules.
Single-molecule fluorescence revealed that the interaction between PAMAM and squalane is reversible. At a pH value of 8, the time constants for the approaching, binding and dissociation of single PAMAM to squalane …

Design Process Modeling: Towards An Ontology Of Engineering Design Activities, Pavan Kumar
All Theses
An ontology of engineering design activities, called the Design Activity Ontology (DAO), is developed in this research. The DAO models 82 information flows and 25 design activities. These activities cover phases of the design process from conceptual phase through detail design phase. The ontology provides a formalized and structured vocabulary of design activities for consistency and exchange of design process models. The DAO enables design processes to be modeled, analyzed and optimized. The DAO is constructed using information flows identified in current design literature, commonly accepted engineering design textbooks, and an existing activity ontology. Specifically, the DAO is an extension …

A Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Dolphinfish; Coryphaena Hippurus, Abundance In The Western Atlantic: Implications For Stock Assessment Of A Data-Limited Pelagic Resource., Kristin M. Kleisner
Open Access Dissertations
Dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) is a pelagic species that is ecologically and commercially important in the western Atlantic region. This species has been linked to dominant oceanographic features such as sea surface temperature (SST) frontal regions. This work first explored the linkages between the catch rates of dolphinfish and the oceanography (satellite-derived SST, distance to front calculations, bottom depth and hook depth) using Principal Components Analysis (PCA). It was demonstrated that higher catch rates are found in relation to warmer SST and nearer to frontal regions. This environmental information was then included in standardizations of catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) indices. It was found …
