Ninety-two children with velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS), a genetic disorder caused by a microdeletion of chromosome 22q11.2 and an age, race, and gender-ratio comparable sample of 59 control participants were included in the project. Participants received an MRI as well as a comprehensive neuropsychological battery; the primary outcome measure in the current report is the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF). Children with VCFS performed less well on the ROCF and have lower whole brain volume compared to controls. After controlling for whole brain volume differences, children with VCFS have bilaterally less parietal lobe gray and white matter yet more frontal lobe white …

Computational Analysis Of Expressed Sequence Tags For Understanding Gene Regulation., I. Elizabeth Cha 1973-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
High-throughput sequencing has provided a myriad of genetic data for thousands of organisms. Computational analysis of one data type, expressed sequence tags (ESTs) yields insight into gene expression, alternative splicing, tissue specificity gene functionality and the detection and differentiation of pseudogenes. Two computational methods have been developed to analyze alternative splicing events and to detect and characterize pseudogenes using ESTs. A case study of rat phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) genes yielded more than twenty-five previously unreported isoforms. These were experimentally verified through wet lab collaboration and found to be tissue specific. In addition, thirteen cytochrome-like gene and pseudogene sequences from the …

Attachment Pathologies Among Incarcerated Sex Offenders, Kelly J. Hunsicker
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Attachment theory underscores the central role of how individuals form and interact within interpersonal and intimate relationships and emphasizes the importance of harmony between caregiver and infant as a foundation for healthy interpersonal relationships. It is believed that amongst the sex offender population that a pathological attachment style will be found which has implication on the types of treatment that would work best for this difficult population. The current research endeavor aggregated empirical research on attachment styles among incarcerated sex offenders. The results suggest a relationship between pathological attachment and sex offender populations.

Production Of Bangla Stops By Native English Speakers Learning Bangla: An Acoustic Analysis, Dustin D. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
Differences in the phonetic and phonological systems of Bangla and English result in negative transfer in the Bangla stop productions of native English speakers. The phonetic realizations of Voice and Aspiration and their interactions with each other are the key factors in this. A production study was carried out focusing on sixteen of the twenty Bangla stops that are distinguished by a four-way voice/aspiration contrast at four different places of articulation, providing a contrastive acoustic analysis of the pronunciation of L1 and L2 adult speakers. Data containing these stops in an intervocalic environment in word-initial, word-medial, and word-final positions was …

Organic Methods To Control Root Rot Of Peas And Spinach In North-Central West Virginia, Hannah Witten Schrum
Organic Methods To Control Root Rot Of Peas And Spinach In North-Central West Virginia, Hannah Witten Schrum
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Root rot disease is a limiting factor in organic production of cool season crops for many growers in North central West Virginia. In attempt to control root rot and its devastating impact on crop stands we decided to study a number of environmental, cultural, and biological control methods. The purpose of this work was to study the effect of alterations of the seed environment on disease incidence (measured by crop emergence and survival 21 days after planting) and thereby define techniques which are suitable for small growers to adopt if they have root rot problems. We therefore explored four broadly …
Microwave Dielectroscopy Of Breast Tissue Phantoms In The 5.8-40 Ghz Range, Binh Tran
Microwave Dielectroscopy Of Breast Tissue Phantoms In The 5.8-40 Ghz Range, Binh Tran
Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Based on the high contrast in dielectric properties between the low-water-contain sample and the high-water-content one, we can determine whether the tissue sample is cancerous or normal. In order to make the measurement repeatable and convenient, some phantom materials, which have the same dielectric properties of human tissues, have been prepared. These phantom tissues are made from gelatin, water with honey syrup and Sodium Chloride (NaCl). In this project, we are going to measure and compare the dielectric properties of different types of phantom tissues by using focused beam antennas. The purpose of this project is to perform a systematic …

Mucosal Immunity In Toxoplasma Gondii Infection, J. Schulthess, D. Fourreau, S. Darche, B. Meresse, L. Kasper, N. Cerf-Bensussan, D. Buzoni-Gatel
Dartmouth Scholarship
Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular parasite that frequently infects a large spectrum of warm-blooded animals. This parasite induces abortion and establishes both chronic and silent infections, particularly in the brain. Parasite penetration into the host activates a strong anti-parasite immune response. In the present paper, we will discuss the interplay between innate and adaptive immunity that occurs within the infected intestine to clear the parasite and to maintain intestinal homeostasis despite the exacerbation of an inflammatory immune response.

Time-Measuring Device: Making Your Own History Of Remembrance Box With Childhood’S Physical Growth, Sang Hee Huh
Theses
Memories, for most of us, are precious indeed. Reminiscing helps us recall long gone events and a wide range of emotions. However, our recollection is imperfect and we know our memory is limited. Our memories may change or we may forget. We are unwilling to entrust precious memories solely to the unassisted mind. Children, in particular, undergo considerable physical, mental, and emotional changes. It is not easy for them to realize or later recall their growth process without assistance. At present, children can review their growth with different types of records: written data on a medical history, photos in family …

The Effects Of Eisenia Fetida (Lumbricidae) And Vermicomposting On Earthworm Populations In Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2008, Sibylle Freiermuth
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Eisenia fetida (Lumbricidae) is an African earthworm species used in vermicomposting in the larger Monteverde region of Costa Rica. Despite its widespread use and growing popularity, little is known about the impact that introducing E. fetida has on local earthworm species. Exotic earthworms have the potential to drastically change the soil composition and community structure causing cascading effects throughout the ecosystem. However, previous studies have found signs of possible niche partitioning and that species richness and abundance actually increased in the presence of E. fetida. Taking samples for six farms using vermicomposting and six without, I found that vermicomposting actually …
Kin Recognition In The Social Spiders Anelosimus Sp. In Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2008, Mary Kathryn Busby
Kin Recognition In The Social Spiders Anelosimus Sp. In Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2008, Mary Kathryn Busby
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Anelosimus spiders are social and use pheromonal and vibrational cues to distinguish conspecifics from predators and prey. Juveniles live in their natal web with adults until maturity, at which time they disperse. Given that juveniles are more likely to disperse to locations near to their natal web and that Anelosimus has developed mechanisms for kin recognition, these spiders would be expected to exhibit aggressive behavior less frequently in the presence of intruding spiders from nearby webs than towards intruders from distant webs. This hypothesis was tested by introducing spiders to new webs from distant locations as well as from nearby …
Species Richness Of Vascular Plants In The Riparian Transition Zones Of The Quebrada La Cruz And The Quebrada Socorro In Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2008, Rhiannon Cook
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
While many studies have been performed to determine the effects of urbanization in the later stages of development on biodiversity, little is known about how biodiversity is affected by urbanizations in its early phases. This research evaluates how the biodiversity of herbaceous plants in the riparian ecotones of two rivers is affected in the transition from a rural to town setting. Morpho species diversity was sampled on two rivers of the Monteverde, Costa Rica area; the Quebrada Socorro, relatively unaffected by human influence, and the Quebrada La Cruz, which is greatly influenced by both the growth of town infrastructure and …

Distribution Of American Leaf Spot Disease (Mycena Citricolor) In Coffee Plantations In Cañitas, Costa Rica, August 2008, Caitlin Looby
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
One of the biggest commodities in the world coffee (Coffea) is an extremely important crop to Costa Rica. There are many ways to manage this crop, however it is primarily shade-grown. Although it is the best method in which to conserve biodiversity, these conditions also promote the growth of Mycena citricolor. Also, known as American Leaf Spot disease, this fungal pathogen causes coffee plants to defoliate and lose their fruit. Four farms in Cañitas, Costa Rica were visited and 12 plants per farm were studied to determine the distribution of this fungus during the wet season. This study also compares …

Pegylated Interferon 2a And 2b In Combination With Ribavirin For The Treatment Of Chronic Hepatitis C In Hiv Infected Patients., Ravinder Dhillon, Simona Rossi, Steven K Herrine
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Coinfection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV is an increasingly recognized clinical dilemma, particularly since the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy. Several studies of this population have demonstrated both more rapid progression of liver disease and poorer overall prognosis compared to HCV monoinfected patients. Consensus guidelines, based primarily on the results of 4 major randomized trials, recommend treatment with peginterferon and ribavirin for 48 weeks in coinfected patients. However, this current standard of care is associated with lower response rates to therapy than those seen in monoinfected patients. Important predictors of response include HCV genotype, pretreatment HCV RNA …

Effects Of Exotic Invasive Vegetation On Breeding Birds Along The North Chickamauga Creek, Shannon Elaine Hatmaker
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The invasion of exotic plants into riparian areas of southeastern United States is a conservation concern not only for native plant communities, but also for wildlife. Breeding bird community structure could be particularly affected by such invasions and subsequent habitat changes as birds respond quickly to changes in habitat resources. During the 2007 breeding season, bird communities were surveyed using the line transect census method at four sites along the North Chickamauga Creek in Hamilton County, Tennessee. Two of the sites were regarded as being highly invaded by exotic understory plant species, while the other two sites remain relatively free …
