Estimating Soil Seed Bank Characteristics In Ponderosa Pine Forests Using Vegetation And Forest-Floor Data, Scott R. Abella, Judith D. Springer Sep 2008

Estimating Soil Seed Bank Characteristics In Ponderosa Pine Forests Using Vegetation And Forest-Floor Data, Scott R. Abella, Judith D. Springer

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

Soil seed banks are important for vegetation management because they contain propagules of species that may be considered desirable or undesirable for site colonization after management and disturbance events. Knowledge of seed bank size and composition before planning management activities facilitates proactive management by providing early alerts of exotic species presence and of abilities of seed banks to promote colonization by desirable species. We developed models in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests in northern Arizona to estimate the size and richness of mineral soil seed banks using readily observable vegetation and forestfloor characteristics. Regression models using three or fewer predictors …

The Yeast Aac2 Protein Exists In Physical Association With The Cytochrome Bc1-Cox Supercomplex And The Tim23 Machinery, Mary Kathryn Dienhart, Rosemary A. Stuart Sep 2008

The Yeast Aac2 Protein Exists In Physical Association With The Cytochrome Bc1-Cox Supercomplex And The Tim23 Machinery, Mary Kathryn Dienhart, Rosemary A. Stuart

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The ADP/ATP carrier (AAC) proteins play a central role in cellular metabolism as they facilitate the exchange of ADP and ATP across the mitochondrial inner membrane. We present evidence here that in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) mitochondria the abundant Aac2 isoform exists in physical association with the cytochrome c reductase (cytochrome bc1)-cytochrome c oxidase (COX) supercomplex and its associated TIM23 machinery. Using a His-tagged Aac2 derivative and affinity purification studies, we also demonstrate here that the Aac2 isoform can be affinity-purified with other AAC proteins. Copurification of the Aac2 protein with the TIM23 machinery can occur independently …

First-Row Transition-Metal Complexes Of A New Pentadentate Ligand, Α,Α,Α′,Α′-Tetra(Pyrazolyl)Lutidine, Tyler James Morin, Brian Bennett, Sergey V. Lindeman, James R. Gardinier Sep 2008

First-Row Transition-Metal Complexes Of A New Pentadentate Ligand, Α,Α,Α′,Α′-Tetra(Pyrazolyl)Lutidine, Tyler James Morin, Brian Bennett, Sergey V. Lindeman, James R. Gardinier

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

A new pentadentate ligand, α,α,α′,α′-tetra(pyrazolyl)lutidine, pz4lut, has been prepared by a CoCl2-catalyzed rearrangement reaction between 2,6-pyridinedicarboxaldehyde and dipyrazolylthione. The coordination chemistry with some divalent first-row transition metal (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) chlorides has been explored. The electronic properties indicate that the new κ5N ligand is a slightly stronger-field donor to Ni2+ and Co2+ than a related pentadentate ligand with five pyridyl donors presumably because of greater interaction between the metal and axial pyridyl.

Aging And Partial Body Weight Support Affects Gait Variability, Anastasia Kyvelidou, Max J. Kurz, Julie L. Ehlers, Nikolaos Stergiou Sep 2008

Aging And Partial Body Weight Support Affects Gait Variability, Anastasia Kyvelidou, Max J. Kurz, Julie L. Ehlers, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

Background: Aging leads to increases in gait variability which may explain the large incidence of falls in the elderly. Body weight support training may be utilized to improve gait in the elderly and minimize falls. However, before initiating rehabilitation protocols, baseline studies are needed to identify the effect of body weight support on elderly gait variability. Our purpose was to determine the kinematic variability of the lower extremities in young and elderly healthy females at changing levels of body weight support during walking.

Methods: Ten young and ten elderly females walked on a treadmill for two minutes with a body …

Faculty Publications

The Advanced Writing library instruction program at Brigham Young University's Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL) is intended to teach junior-level students advanced information literacy and research skills. The university general education curriculum requires students to participate in the program as part of their Advanced Writing course. When anecdotal feedback from librarians and students identified problems with the program, the authors conducted a qualitative evaluation of the program in order to identify problems and possible solutions. The evaluation included a student survey and focus groups with students, librarians, and English faculty. This paper describes the HBLL Advanced Writing instruction program, identifies …

Direct Estimation Of Evoked Hemoglobin Changes By Multimodality Fusion Imaging, Theodore J. Huppert, Solomon G. Diamond, David A. Boas Sep 2008

Direct Estimation Of Evoked Hemoglobin Changes By Multimodality Fusion Imaging, Theodore J. Huppert, Solomon G. Diamond, David A. Boas

Dartmouth Scholarship

In the last two decades, both diffuse optical tomography (DOT) and blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD)-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) methods have been developed as noninvasive tools for imaging evoked cerebral hemodynamic changes in studies of brain activity. Although these two technologies measure functional contrast from similar physiological sources, i.e., changes in hemoglobin levels, these two modalities are based on distinct physical and biophysical principles leading to both limitations and strengths to each method. In this work, we describe a unified linear model to combine the complimentary spatial, temporal, and spectroscopic resolutions of concurrently measured optical tomography and fMRI …

Wavelength Band Optimization In Spectral Near-Infrared Optical Tomography Improves Accuracy While Reducing Data Acquisition And Computational Burden, Matthew E. Eames, Jia Wang, Brian W. Pogue, Hamid Dehghani Sep 2008

Wavelength Band Optimization In Spectral Near-Infrared Optical Tomography Improves Accuracy While Reducing Data Acquisition And Computational Burden, Matthew E. Eames, Jia Wang, Brian W. Pogue, Hamid Dehghani

Dartmouth Scholarship

Multispectral near-infrared (NIR) tomographic imaging has the potential to provide information about molecules absorbing light in tissue, as well as subcellular structures scattering light, based on transmission measurements. However, the choice of possible wavelengths used is crucial for the accurate separation of these parameters, as well as for diminishing crosstalk between the contributing chromophores. While multispectral systems are often restricted by the wavelengths of laser diodes available, continuous-wave broadband systems exist that have the advantage of providing broadband NIR spectroscopy data, albeit without the benefit of the temporal data. In this work, the use of large spectral NIR datasets is …

Statins And Adverse Cardiovascular Events In Moderate-Risk Females: A Statistical And Legal Analysis With Implications For Fda Preemption Claims, Theodore Eisenberg, Martin T. Wells Sep 2008

Statins And Adverse Cardiovascular Events In Moderate-Risk Females: A Statistical And Legal Analysis With Implications For Fda Preemption Claims, Theodore Eisenberg, Martin T. Wells

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This article presents: (1) meta-analyses of studies of cardioprotection of women and men by statins, including Lipitor (atorvastatin), and (2) a legal analysis of advertising promoting Lipitor as preventing heart attacks. The meta-analyses of primary prevention clinical trials show statistically significant benefits for men but not for women, and a statistically significant difference between men and women. The analyses do not support (1) statin use to reduce heart attacks in women based on extrapolation from men, or (2) approving or advertising statins as reducing heart attacks without qualification in a population that includes many women. The legal analysis raises the …

Non-Canonical Binding Of Calmodulin To Aquaporin-0: Implications For Channel Regulation, Steve Reichow, Tamir Gonen Sep 2008

Non-Canonical Binding Of Calmodulin To Aquaporin-0: Implications For Channel Regulation, Steve Reichow, Tamir Gonen

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Aquaporins (AQPs) are a family of ubiquitous membrane channels that conduct water across cell membranes. AQPs form homo-tetramers containing four functional and independent water pores. Aquaporin-0 (AQP0) is expressed in the eye lens where its water permeability is regulated by calmodulin (CaM). Here we use a combination of biochemical methods and NMR spectroscopy to probe the interaction between AQP0 and CaM. We show CaM binds the AQP0 C-terminal domain in a calcium dependent manner. We demonstrate that only two CaM molecules bind a single AQP0 tetramer in a non-canonical fashion, suggesting a form of co-operativity between AQP0 monomers. Based on …

Nest Site Preference And Nesting Success Of Upland Sandpiper On Grazing Systems In East Central North Dakota-, Blane A. Klemek Sep 2008

Nest Site Preference And Nesting Success Of Upland Sandpiper On Grazing Systems In East Central North Dakota-, Blane A. Klemek

The Prairie Naturalist

require ranchers to move their cattle throughout the range from one paddock to another, thereby allowing formerly grazed paddocks to regenerate. This is beneficial in a number of ways: overgrazing is reduced, cattle weight-gains are improved, suitable nesting cover for ground nesting birds is produced, and the overall health of the grassland is enhanced (Sedivec and Barker 1991). The objectives of my study were to investigate nesting success of the upland sandpiper as a function of grazing regime. Specifically, I was interested in comparing nesting success between RGS and non-rotational grazing systems (NRGS) and to examine relationships between nest site …

Semi-Melanistic White-Tailed Deer In Northern Wisconsin, Christopher N. Jacques, Keith R. Mccaffery, Jonathan Jenks, John T. Baccus Sep 2008

Semi-Melanistic White-Tailed Deer In Northern Wisconsin, Christopher N. Jacques, Keith R. Mccaffery, Jonathan Jenks, John T. Baccus

The Prairie Naturalist

Melanistic color morphs of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are differentiated from other recognized color morphs by having uniform black hairs on the dorsal surface with subdued black hairs on the ventral surface, dark face and ears, a distinctive mid-dorsal stripe extending from the head to the apex of the tail, and a tail with black dorsally and white ventrally (Baccus and Posey 1999). Melanism results from the overproduction of the skin pigment melanin and is considered rare in white-tailed deer populations (Severinghaus and Cheatum 1956, Sauer 1984, Smith et al. 1984). Semi-melanistic deer have the same dark pelage …

The most successful bioprospecting venture was established in 1989 in Costa Rica. Interestingly, the distinction of being a forerunner in exploiting bioprospecting goes to India. In 1979, a full decade before Costa Rica, India established the TBGRI (Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute) at Trivandrum.

Yet, the TBGRI venture with the Kani Tribes, which had the potential to become a beacon of bioprospecting success, is showcased as the exemplar of failure. In this era of trade regime, the following paper asserts, bioprospecting ventures are important tools for developing countries. Countries like India and organizations like the TBGRI should learn from …

An Integrated Approach To The Toxicity Evaluation Of Irish Marine Sediment - Chemical Assessment, Michelle Giltrap Sep 2008

An Integrated Approach To The Toxicity Evaluation Of Irish Marine Sediment - Chemical Assessment, Michelle Giltrap

Doctoral

This project was a collaborative project between the Marine Institute (MI) in Galway and Radiation and Environmental Science Centre (RESC) in the Technological University Dublin (DIT). In Ireland, at present, sediment quality assessments are generally reliant on chemical analysis alone with limited bioassay techniques available to further characterise the sediment. Some causative agents of toxicity to biological organisms are below analytical detection limits. Integration of bioassay data with chemical analysis is essential in order to complete a full ecotoxicological assessment of the quality of the marine environment. This project describes the chemical analysis of marine sediment for persistent pollutants from …

Langer's Method For The Calculation Of Escape Rates And Its Application To Systems Of Ferromagnets, Gerard Duff Sep 2008

Langer's Method For The Calculation Of Escape Rates And Its Application To Systems Of Ferromagnets, Gerard Duff

Doctoral

This work is a study of the application of a theory proposed by J. S. Langer (J.S. Langer, Statistical Theory of the Decay of Metastable States, Annals of Physics 54, 258-275 (1969)) for the calculation of the decay rate (relaxation rate) of a metastable state. The theory is set in the context of statistical mechanics, where the dynamics of a system with a large number of degrees of freedom (order 1023) are reduced to N degrees of freedom, where N is small, when a steady state or equilibrium position is maintained by the entire system. In this thesis N equals …

Design And Synthesis Of Carbohydrate Based Derivatives As Antimicrobial Compounds, Aoife Smith Sep 2008

Design And Synthesis Of Carbohydrate Based Derivatives As Antimicrobial Compounds, Aoife Smith

Doctoral

Investigations into the design of analogues of GlcNAc-Ins, the substrate for the enzyme GlcNAc-Ins deacetylase (mshB), a therapeutic target on the pathway to mycothiol biosynthesis in Mycobacterium tuberculosis are described. Initial studies directed towards the design of a substrate analogue were based on the 3-D structure and a proposed mechanism of action of mshB (deduced by Dr. Andrew McCarthy, EMBL). The compounds were designed with the aim to produce an analogue which could better mimic the natural substrate for mshB (GlcNAc-Ins) for crystallisation and mechanistic studies to further improve the knowledge of this enzyme. A series of fatty acid ester …

Spatiotemporally Distributed Frontotemporal Networks For Sentence Reading, Sidney R. Lehky, Xinmiao Peng, Carrie J. Mcadams, Anne B. Sereno

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: A key aspect of representations for object recognition and scene analysis in the ventral visual stream is the spatial frame of reference, be it a viewer-centered, object-centered, or scene-based coordinate system. Coordinate transforms from retinocentric space to other reference frames involve combining neural visual responses with extraretinal postural information.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We examined whether such spatial information is available to anterior inferotemporal (AIT) neurons in the macaque monkey by measuring the effect of eye position on responses to a set of simple 2D shapes. We report, for the first time, a significant eye position effect in over 40% of …

The Use Of Complex Adaptive Systems As A Generative Metaphor In An Action Research Study Of An Organisation, Callum Brown Sep 2008

The Use Of Complex Adaptive Systems As A Generative Metaphor In An Action Research Study Of An Organisation, Callum Brown

The Qualitative Report

Understanding the dynamic behaviour of organisations is challenging and this study uses a model of complex adaptive systems as a generative metaphor to address this challenge. The research question addressed is: How might a conceptual model of complex adaptive systems be used to assist in understanding the dynamic nature of organisations? Using an action research methodology, 6 Ai r Force internal management consulting teams were exposed to overlapping attributes of complex adaptive systems. The study shows that participants found the attributes valuable in understanding the dynamic nature of organisations; however they did present challenges for understanding. Despite being challenging to …

Spectroscopic Studies On Arabidopsis Ethe1, A Glyoxalase Ii-Like Protein, Meghan M. Holdorf, Brian Bennett, Michael W. Crowder, Christopher A. Makaroff

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

ETHE1 (ethylmalonic encephalopathy protein 1) is a β-lactamase fold-containing protein that is essential for the survival of a range of organisms. In spite of the apparent importance of this enzyme, very little is known about its function or biochemical properties. In this study Arabidopsis ETHE1 was over-expressed and purified and shown to bind tightly to 1.2 ± 0.2 equivalents of iron. 1H NMR and EPR studies demonstrate that the predominant oxidation state of Fe in ETHE1 is Fe(II), and NMR studies confirm that two histidines are bound to Fe(II). EPR studies show that there is no antiferromagnetically coupled Fe(III)Fe(II) …

The Arctic seafloor remains one of the last unexplored areas on Earth. Exploration of this unique environment using standard remotely operated oceanographic tools has been obstructed by the dense Arctic ice cover. In the summer of 2007 the Arctic Gakkel Vents Expedition (AGAVE) was conducted with the express intention of understanding aspects of the marine biology, chemistry and geology associated with hydrothermal venting on the section of the mid-ocean ridge known as the Gakkel Ridge. Unlike previous research expeditions to the Arctic the focus was on high resolution imaging and sampling of the deep seafloor. To accomplish our goals we …
