The question of when modern birds (Neornithes) first diversified has generated much debate among avian systematists. Fossil evidence generally supports a Tertiary diversification, whereas estimates based on molecular dating favor an earlier diversification in the Cretaceous period. In this study, we used an alternate approach, the inference of historical biogeographic patterns, to test the hypothesis that the initial radiation of the Order Psittaciformes (the parrots and cockatoos) originated on the Gondwana supercontinent during the Cretaceous. Demographic matrix models have become an integral part of population viability analysis for threatened and endangered species, but their use is often limited by data availability. A common solution to this problem is to assume constant annual rates within a multi-year stage. Partial life cycle analysis (PLC), which incorporates only juvenile and adult stages, is a noteworthy example of this approach because it has been described in the literature as a reliable approximation of age-structured populations. However, we predict from Jensen's Inequality that the required lumping of age classes leads to over- or underestimation of population fitness when survival rates …

The Effects Of Packaging Film And Storage Temperature On The Internal Package Atmosphere And Fermentation Enzyme Activity Of Sweet Potato Slices, Elif Erturk, David H. Picha

Fresh-cut sweet potato slices were packaged in low- (PD900), medium- (PD961) and high-permeability (PD941) film bags, and were stored at 2 or 8C for 14 days. Changes in O 2, CO 2, ethanol and acetaldehyde concentrations in the headspace were monitored over 14 days. The activities of fermentation enzymes and the concentration of fermentation volatiles were measured from tissue extracts on days 0, 7 and 14. Storage at 8C was an excessively high temperature for fresh-cut sweet potatoes to maintain aerobic respiration for 14 days. Low-permeability film bags resulted in anaerobiosis at 2 and 8C. The 10th International Congress on Combustion Byproducts and their Health Effects was held in Ischia, Italy, from June 17-20, 2007. It is sponsored by the US NIEHS, NSF, Coalition for Responsible Waste Incineration (CRWI), and Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The congress focused on: the origin, characterization, and health impacts of combustion-generated fine and ultrafine particles; emissions of mercury and dioxins, and the development/application of novel analytical/diagnostic tools. The consensus of the discussion was that particle-associated organics, metals, and persistent free radicals (PFRs) produced by combustion sources are the likely source of the observed health impacts of airborne PM rather …

This edition of the Wooster Magazine was published in the fall of 2008. The director of libraries Damon Hickey retired this summer after working at the college for seventeen years. The class of 2012 is welcomed to campus. Joe Biden visited campus mid September. The newest dorm to open on campus, Gault Manor, is the new standard for living at the college. Five entrepreneurial alumni are featured from page twelve to twenty-one: Andrew Baird '84, Rashmi Ekka '08, Adam Goldfeder '93, Deb Behrens '80, and Asad Khan '93. The purpose of the study reported here was to determine the perceptions of 4-H members and volunteers regarding the retinal imaging process as an innovative method to verify the identity of 4-H animals. Participants were surveyed to determine the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the retinal imaging process and to determine whether participants consider retinal imaging to be beneficial to the Indiana 4-H program. Retinal imaging was perceived to be an accurate and efficient method of livestock identification by both 4-H members and adult volunteers. Volunteers determined that their ability to capture a retinal image requires skill and practice.

Based on a library exhibition at the University of South Carolina, summarizes the career and writings of many well-known British Victorian novelists, poets and non-fiction writers (including Dickens, Thackeray, Carlyle, Darwin, Tennyson, E.B. and Robert Browning, the Brontes, George Eliot, R.L.Stevenson), in contrast with the achievements of lesser-known writers also represented in the library's special collections (including G. W. M. Reynolds, Elizabeth Sewell, William North, Rhoda Broughton, and George Douglas Brown). Originally developed as an exhibition for the 2008 meeting of the Victorians Institute.

Men, patriarchy and masculine characteristics have predominantly been examined within feminist theory as a source of power, domination, inequality and subordination. Various theories of inequality have been developed by feminists to challenge and reveal structures and discourses that reinforce explicitly or implicitly the centrality of men and the identity of the top of a hierarchical power and economic structure as male.

The study of masculinities has been inspired by feminist theory to explore the construction of manhood and masculinity, and to question the real circumstances of men. It has explored how privilege is constructed, and what price is paid for …

Race, Identity, And Professional Responsibility: Why Legal Services Organizations Need African American Staff Attorneys, Shani M. King

Given the fundamental importance of the attorney-client relationship in securing favorable outcomes for clients, legal services organizations that serve large populations of African Americans should employ African American staff attorneys because: (1) African American lawyers and clients share a group identity that makes it more likely that a black attorney will be able to gain a black client's trust; (2) black attorneys communicate more effectively with black clients; and (3) the perception of a judicial system that is unfair and racist is likely to encourage black clients to trust black lawyers more than white lawyers, who are more likely to …

Lampreys were and continue to be an important resource for Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest. Lampreys possess several skeletal structures that are regularly identified in marine mammal and bird stomach contents and fecal samples, suggesting that lamprey elements may preserve in archaeological contexts. However, their remains have not been identified in archaeological faunal samples in the Pacific Northwest. This may be due to the lack of an adequate "search image" for lamprey remains among faunal analysts and limited use of line screen sampling. Descriptions and photographs of lamprey remains that are most likely to survive in archaeological contexts are …

In Vitro Antimicrobial Activity Of Extracts Of Passiflora Edulis (Passifloraceae) And Sphaeranthus Indicus (Asteraceae), Asirvatham Doss, Pichai Anthoni Doss, Rangasamy Dhanabalan

The organic extracts of Passiflora edulis and Sphaeranthus indicus were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against clinically important bacteria, viz., Escherichia coli MTCC 443, Salmonella typhi MTCC 734, Staphylococus aureus MTCC 737, Bacillus subtilis, Streptococcus pyogens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Aspergillus flavus, Pencillium restrictum, and Trichoderma viride. The in vitro antimicrobial activity was performed by agar disc diffusion method. Streptococcus pyogens was the most resistant bacterial strains against the methanol extracts.
