Electrons, Buckyballs, And Orifices: Nature’S Way Of Minimizing Energy, Peter Dragnev

The ‘uniform’ distribution of many points on the unit sphere is a highly non-trivial problem with applications throughout modern science. Whether one studies electrons in equilibrium from physics, large fullerene compounds from chemistry, orifices of pollen grain from biology, or data encoding from computer science, one arrives at spherical arrangements of points that minimize some energy functional. In this talk, we shall make a short survey of various problems in the literature and focus on the separation properties of extremal configurations and related minimal energy problems.

Syntaxin 3b Is Essential For The Exocytosis Of Synaptic Vesicles In Ribbon Synapses Of The Retina, Leigh B Curtis, Blair Doneske, Xiaoqin Liu, Christina Thaller, James A Mcnew, Roger Janz

Previous studies have demonstrated that ribbon synapses in the retina do not contain the t-SNARE (target-soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor) syntaxin 1A that is found in conventional synapses of the nervous system. In contrast, ribbon synapses of the retina contain the related isoform syntaxin 3. In addition to its localization in ribbon synapses, syntaxin 3 is also found in nonneuronal cells, where it has been implicated in the trafficking of transport vesicles to the apical plasma membrane of polarized cells. The syntaxin 3 gene codes for four different splice forms, syntaxins 3A, 3B, 3C, and 3D. We demonstrate here …

The Development Of Academic Journals In Institutions Of Higher Learning In Kano State, Nigeria, Ahmed Mohammed

Academic journals are one of the primary media through which new knowledge is disseminated. This article reports on research that studied the academic journals in fifteen institutions of higher learning in the Kano state of Nigeria. The study revealed that five of the institutions produce academic journals, and that a total of 37 academic journals exist in institutions studied, including both active and ceased titles. The study further identifies problems associated with journals and measures to address the problems.

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Predation has been identified as a key factor limiting upland-nesting bird reproductive success in many studies. These results suggest that the effects of predation could be reduced by establishing and maintaining suitable nesting habitats. In several studies, habitat management alone was able to maintain populations of upland-nesting birds at or slightly above threshold believed necessary to sustain populations. However, additional studies also have shown that avian populations increased substantially after predator populations were reduced or nesting birds were protected by restricting predator access through the use of electric fencing or creating nesting islands. The Mammoth Cave International Center for Science and Learning (MCICSL) is a cooperative venture of Mammoth Cave National Park and Western Kentucky University. Funding, logistical support, and governance of MCICSL are shared equally by both entities. MCICSL is part of a national network of research learning centers located within the National Park Service.

The goals of MCICSL and the other research learning centers are to:

I. Facilitate the use of parks for scientific inquiry.

II. Support science-informed decision making.

III. Communicate the relevance of and provide access to knowledge gained through scientific research.

cAMP is a second messenger in a variety of chemosensory receptors, including taste buds and glucose-sensitive pancreatic beta-cells. cAMP is modulated during taste transduction, yet the significance of cAMP changes and the taste cell types in which they occur (Type I glial-like; Type II Receptor; Type III Presynaptic) remain unclear. I developed techniques to image real-time changes in intracellular cAMP in taste cells using genetically-encoded cAMP reporters. This FRET-based reporter permits one to measure single-cell cAMP levels with excellent spatial and temporal resolution (Zaccolo & Pozzan 2002, Science 295:1711). Physiological processes that set an organism’s thermal limits are in part determining recent shifts in biogeographic distribution ranges due to global climate change. Several characteristics of the heat-shock response (HSR), such as the onset, maximal, and upper limit of heat-shock protein (Hsp) synthesis, contribute to setting the acute upper thermal limits of most organisms. Aquatic animals from stable, moderately variable, or highly variable thermal environments differ in their HSR. Some animals living in extremely stable thermal environments lack the response altogether. In contrast, rocky intertidal animals that experience highly variable thermal conditions start synthesizing Hsps, that is, the onset of …
