Comparison Of Various Methods Of Measuring Body Composition To Underwater Weighing In Adult Men And Women, Mariana Krasteva Pencheva

Nine different methods of measuring body composition were compared to underwater weighing in average Caucasian adult men and women, to determine which method correlated highest with UWW. Fifty participants were tested on underwater weighing, air displacement plethysmoghraphy, Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry, bioelectrical impedance analysis, ultrasound, near infrared reactance, and skinfolds---sum of 7, 4, and 3 sites; All correlations for both genders were high at the .05 level. For men the highest correlation was between UWW and the sum of 4 skinfolds at .971 and the lowest between UWW and BIA of .748. For women the highest correlation was between UWW …

It serves not as a tool of conservatism, but as an opportunity towards empathy and expansion in a narrowing world; Ecology also plays a prominent role in both the poetry as well as the development of uncertainty and sustainability. By 1997, the number of children living in the home of a grandparent had risen to 3.9 million or 5.5 percent. The 2000 Census reports an estimated 5.9 million children live in a household maintained by a grandparent (US Census Bureau, 2000). While there are many benefits to having grandparents raise grandchildren, there are also considerable challenges, impacting the family structure, dynamics, and roles. Failure to eradicate infiltrating glioma cells using conventional treatment regimens results in tumor recurrence and is responsible for the dismal prognosis of patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). This is due to the fact that migrating glioma cells are protected by the blood-brain barrier (BBB) which prevents the delivery of most anti-cancer agents. The overall objective of this work was to evaluate the ability of photochemical internalization (PCI) to selectively disrupt the BBB in rats. Storage of spent nuclear waste is an environmental and industrial concern that must be addressed. Iodine-129, a by-product of nuclear waste reprocessing, has a strong environmental presence with a half live of 15.7 million years. Radioactive iodine is currently immobilized by carbon-containing materials and silver impregnated materials. In this research, sphagnum peat was examined as a material to sequester iodine. Several analytical methods were used to determine the ability of sphagnum peat to sequester iodine. PCB exposure has been associated with a reduction in circulating thyroid hormones via several different mechanisms. While thyroid hormones can influence many physiological endpoints in adults, precise concentrations during critical periods of gestation are crucial to normal development. Maternal consumption of PCB contaminated fish has been associated with developmental problems in animals and humans. Alterations of thyroid hormones is postulated to be one possible source of the developmental latencies associated with PCB exposure. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between organizational climate and job satisfaction in the Clark County School District (Las Vegas, Nevada); The data were collected from teachers randomly selected from urban middle schools in this district. There were 19 schools involved in the study, with 15 teachers selected from each school to respond to two instruments. The Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire---Revised Secondary (OCDQ-RS) and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) were sent to 285 teachers, of which 197 were returned (70%). This dissertation presents a study of the spent nuclear fuel canisters for maximizing the compressive stress depth through the closure-weld region wall thickness. Induction coil heating technique can be used to relieve the residual stresses from the closure weld and induce a state of compression through the wall thickness. This technique involves localized heating of the material by the surrounding coils. The material is then cooled to the room temperature by quenching; A three-dimensional finite element model was developed for the canister using the sequential method. The purpose of this work is to examine the role of race, ethnicity, and gender in the treatment of Native American, women, and Latino defendants and inmates by Southwestern courts and prisons from 1890 to 1930. This dissertation addresses issues such as the types of trials Native Americans, women and Latinos received from Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico courts and what types of sentences they received. One of the reasons behind this phenomenon is the lack of or inadequate scaffolding or guidance provided to students when participating on asynchronous discussion boards. Plant successional trajectories are driven in part by the interactions among the biotic and abiotic components of a plant community such that introduction of an invasive species may impact the recruitment of native species. Child maltreatment is a societal problem that affects thousands of youths in the United States. Substantial amounts of youths affected by child maltreatment develop Posttraumatic Disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Depression, maladaptive cognitions, dissociation, and anger are symptoms often associated with presentations of PTSD. Specifically, these PTSD-related symptoms may influence development and maintenance of PTSD. Positive Emotion Processing Deficits In Schizophrenia, Gregory P Strauss

Affective impairments were examined in patients with and without deficit syndrome schizophrenia. A battery of tests designed to measure emotional experience, emotional information processing, and emotional perception were administered to deficit (n = 15) and non-deficit syndrome (n = 26) schizophrenia patients classified according to the Schedule for the Deficit Syndrome, and matched non-patient control subjects (n = 22). As predicted, in comparison to non-deficit patients and controls, deficit syndrome patients reported less frequent and intense experience of positive emotion, recalled significantly fewer positive words, and displayed an impaired ability to accurately identify and judge the valence of pleasant odors. …

This was the first study to examine the differential effectiveness of two behavioral interventions for selective mutism while employing a single-case alternating treatments design with documentation of treatment outcomes, calculation of effect size, and measures of treatment integrity. Participants were recruited via press release to the local media and the Clark County School District. Interested participants were initially screened over the telephone. If the screening indicated that a child met diagnostic criteria for selective mutism and did not meet exclusionary criteria, an assessment was scheduled. This is a qualitative study designed to use focus groups as a means of identifying the personal epistemologies of preschool children in an authentic learning environment. Personal epistemology is generally defined as the theory about the nature of knowledge and the process of knowing. Investigations of young children are scarce in this field, and little is known about the early onset of epistemological development. Amelanchier anifolia (Juneberries/Serviceberries) historically played an important part in the diet and culture of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara (MHA) Tribal Nations. Research conducted as part of this study into historical and contemporary uses of the Juneberry by MHA Tribal Members indicated extensive historical use and a high interest in Juneberry reestablishment for cultural, nutritional, and economic reasons. Background and Purpose: Neurotization of denervated muscles has been shown to improve muscle bulk, but the neuronal regeneration response has not been compared previously in different surgical techniques of neurotization. Thus, using a rat model of experimental skeletal muscle denervation, we studied neuronal regeneration following sensory neurotization by two methods: sensory nerve to motor branch of muscle and direct sensory nerve implantation to muscle.

In early spring, areas of soil directly under baylage, spread for winter consumption by steers, is void of vegetation even after reseeding. This study was conducted to determine if: 1) residual baylage leachate is allelopathic to orchardgrass and red clover, 2) soil microorganisms have an effect on the toxicity of the leachate, and 3) toxicity decreases over time. Petri dishes, as well as potted soil/sand mixtures, were used to test for allelopathy. Leachate reduced seed germination and seedling length as compared to distilled water. There is evidence that soil microorganisms did not affect leachate toxicity. Toxicity of leachate to both …

Forested ecosystems are the largest terrestrial sinks for carbon dioxide (CO2) on earth and are important in mitigating the negative effects of human induced increases of atmospheric CO2. Trees fix CO2 into sugars by using the nitrogen demanding processes of photosynthesis. Modeling and empirical studies have shown stimulations in photosynthesis under elevated CO2 conditions but the response decreases as plant demand for N increases. Caveolin-1, the protein coat of caveolae membrane invaginations, was originally hypothesized to function solely as a tumor suppressor in human cancers. However, since the early 1990s, caveolin-1 has been found to be up-regulated in a number of metastatic cancers. This expression has been shown to correlate with disease progression and decreases in overall patient survival in some tumor types. Further, caveolin-1 expression is elevated in multi-drug resistant cancer cells and caveolae are thought to participate in the efflux pathway to pump drugs out of these tumor cells. The actin filament associated protein of 110 kDA (AFAP-110) is a well-characterized protein composed of amino-terminal binding motifs that function upstream of a carboxy-terminal actin binding domain. In vitro studies demonstrate that the amino-terminal pleckstrin homology 1 (PH1) domain interacts with activated PKCα, relaying signals that activate Src family kinases via SH3 and SH2 binding. Serving as an adaptor protein, AFAP-110 relays signals that result in the assembly of motility structures. These findings could be of physiological as well pathological significance as AFAP-110 colocalizes with SFKs in the developing brain as well as in the glial-derived tumor, glioblastoma multiforme.
