The purpose of this study was to investigate the types of judgments undergraduate students made regarding a child’s behavior they observed in a brief video clip. Their attributions were expected to be affected by a key situational factor that only some were informed of. The researcher hypothesized that participants informed that the child, in the clip, was recently diagnosed with leukemia would attribute the child’s behavior to situational factors, whereas participants not given any information about the child in the clip, would attribute the child’s behavior to things intrinsic of the child.

Implicit And Explicit Self-Esteem And Their Correlations With Codependency, Rachel N. Rogers

The present study examined the correlations between implicit and explicit self-esteem and codependency. Implicit self-esteem involves automatic, over-learned self-evaluations and explicit self-esteem refers to conscious feelings of one’s self. It was predicted that participants who scored higher on the implicit self-esteem measure would score lower on the codependency scale, regardless of scores on the explicit self-esteem scale. Participants engaged in a timed task involving me/not-me primes and positive/negative words to measure implicit self-esteem. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Spann-Fischer Codependency Scale were used to measure explicit self-esteem and codependency, respectively. The use of various polymer supports adhering phospholipid multibilayers to an internal reflection element have been investigated. The polymer supports studied range from polystyrene (PS), and 100 nm wide PS nanospheres to triethylaminated poly(vinyl benzyl chloride) (PVBC). The PS nanospheres showed the most promise as an adhesion layer since they appear to be the most robust with repeated washings. They also appear to stabilize their adjacent phospholipid multibilayer by increasing the lipid melting temperature. The triethylaminated DVBC also provided an increase of lipid melting temperature, but not quite to the same degree as the PS nanospheres. The cooperativity of such …

Recently team teaching has become more prevalent in high school classes. These teams often pair a general education teacher with content knowledge with a special education teacher. Due to a lack of detailed knowledge/experience in the other’s area of expertise, many team teachers in science courses are confronted with unique challenges. In this article, a general education science teacher and a special education teacher share how they successfully developed their “team.” Through the use of a sports related metaphor, “the game plan,” these teachers provide insight into how successful co-teaching relationships can be fostered. We studied the distributional ecology of the anemone shrimp Periclimenes rathbunae associating with the anemone Stichodactyla helianthus in Tobago, West Indies. The shrimps occupied 83.1% of the anemones (n = 83), with mean densities of 2.8 shrimps per anemone in the population and 3.4 shrimps per occupied anemone, and up to 11 inhabiting a single anemone. Shrimp density was significantly correlated with anemone size. Because the density of shrimps was not significantly correlated with the distance to the nearest neighboring anemone or the number of anemones in a cluster, colonization appears to be related to chance or some unknown factor …

Electrogenic Cl^– and K⁺ secretion in isolated mucosa from guinea pig distal colon measured as short-circuit current (I_sc) and transepithelial conductance (G_t) were stimulated by epinephrine (epi), prostaglandin-E₂ (PGE₂) and carbachol (CCh). neuropeptide-Y (NPY) and peptide-YY (PYY) inhibited by 60% Cl^– secretion activated by either PGE₂ or PGE₂+CCh with EC₅₀’s of 16nM and 6nM, respectively. Neither peptide markedly inhibited the transient component of the PGE₂+CCh response. Immunoreactivity (IR) for NPY was present in enteric ganglia and in proximity with crypts. Highly fluorescent conjugated polymer dots were developed for demanding applications such as fluorescence imaging in live cells. These nanoparticles exhibit small particle diameters, extraordinary fluorescence brightness, and excellent photostability. Single particle fluorescence imaging and kinetic studies indicate much higher emission rates (∼10⁸ s⁻¹) and little or no blinking of the nanoparticles as compared to typical results for single dye molecules and quantum dots. Analysis of single particle photobleaching trajectories reveals excellent photostability—as many as 10⁹ or more photons emitted per nanoparticle prior to irreversible photobleaching. I suggest a pluralistic account of folk psychology according to which not all predictions or explanations rely on the attribution of mental states, and not all intentional actions are explained by mental states. This view of folk psychology is supported by research in developmental and social psychology. It is well known that people use personality traits to predict behavior. I argue that trait attribution is not shorthand for mental state attributions, since traits are not identical to beliefs or desires, and an understanding of belief or desire is not necessary for using trait attributions. The fitness of a non-rewarding plant species can be increased by the addition of another plant species with similar flowers and reward present if pollinators are unable to distinguish between the two species (Bierzychudek 1981). Floral mimicry occurs between species when three ecological conditions are met: the model and mimic species must coexist within flight range of an individual pollinator, plant species must share pollinator species, and pollinator individuals visiting one plant must also visit one or both of the other plant species (Bierzychudek 1981). With an ever-expanding wealth of recordings, students in Christian secondary schools are faced with an increasing number of musical choices and must be equipped to discern musical activity in a God-glorifying way. This study researches the factors influencing students' musical attitudes over which schools have the most control, describes a biblically-based Christian attitude towards music, and finally proposes a model based on that research for teaching musical discernment from a distinctly Christian standpoint. Epiphylls are ubiquitous throughout the Tropics and may significantly shade their host leaves. Anthony et al. (2002) document increased levels of chlorophylls a and b in leaves with significant lichen coverage on two tropical understory plants in Australia, suggesting host leaves may respond to epiphyll shading by increasing photosynthetic pigments. Reaction of plants to the second major group of tropical epiphylls, liverworts, has not been studied. The purpose of this study was to see if a neotropical palm, Calyptrogyne gneisbregntiana, compensates for epiphyll cover by both lichens and liverworts. Drowning Survival In Icy Water: A Review, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

We conducted an extensive literature review using the search terms of “drowning” and “hypothermia” to discover the major factors related to differences in survival rate especially associated with hypothermic effects. Studies indicated that some differences in drowning survival could be identified associated with age, sex, length of submersion, reduced core body temperature, and quality of cardiopulmonary respiratory care. The variability of results associated with the large number of studies prevented us from making any recommendations about whether hypothermia can improve survival among either children or adults.

Ph-Induced Activation Of Arenavirus Membrane Fusion Is Antagonized By Small-Molecule Inhibitors, Joanne York, Dongcheng Dai, Sean M. Amberg, Jack H. Nunberg

The arenavirus envelope glycoprotein (GPC) mediates viral entry through pH-induced membrane fusion in the endosome. This crucial process in the viral life cycle can be specifically inhibited in the New World arenaviruses by the small-molecule compound ST-294. Here, we show that ST-294 interferes with GPC-mediated membrane fusion by targeting the interaction of the G2 fusion subunit with the stable signal peptide (SSP). We demonstrate that amino acid substitutions at lysine-33 of the Junin virus SSP confer resistance to ST-294 and engender de novo sensitivity to ST-161, a chemically distinct inhibitor of the Old World Lassa fever virus. We combined high-resolution remote sensing techniques with detailed study of the physical and faunal characteristics at point locations in different seafloor environments within the Oyster Bay- Cold Spring Harbor Complex, the Huntington-Northport Bay Complex, and Port Jefferson Harbor, including Conscience Bay. High-resolution backscatter and bathymetric maps created by side scan and multibeam sonar surveys were used to classify the sea bed into provinces. Samples for macrofauna and sediment properties were collected within each province to provide "ground truth" for the acoustic maps. Oyster Bay, Huntington Harbor, and Port Jefferson Harbor were sampled at 40, 38, and 50 locations, respectively, with …

Chemical crosslinking mediated by short bifunctional reagents has been widely used for determining physical relationships among polypeptides in multisubunit proteins, but less often for functional studies. Here we introduce the approach of tethering polypeptides by using bifunctional reagents containing a lengthy, flexible PEG linker as a form of crosslinking especially suited to functional analyses. The rotary molecular motor ATP synthase was used as a model subject. Jointed goatgrass (Aegilops cylindrica Host) is an economically important weed in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–fallow production regions of the United States. Few options exist for management of jointed goatgrass in winter wheat due to the close genetic relationship between the two species. This research evaluated use of imazamox herbicide (2-[(RS)-4-isopropyl-4- methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl]-5-methoxymethylnicotinic acid) in an imazamox-resistant (IR) winter wheat–fallow rotation over 6 yr when grown continuously or in rotation with a conventional winter wheat cultivar. Calculations of electrostatic properties of protein-protein complexes are usually done within framework of a model with a certain set of parameters. In this paper we present a comprehensive statistical analysis of the sensitivity of the electrostatic component of binding free energy (DeltaDeltaGel) with respect with different force fields (Charmm, Amber, and OPLS), different values of the internal dielectric constant, and different presentations of molecular surface (different values of the probe radius).
