Dna Is Different:Implications Of The Public Perception Ofdna Evidence On Police Interrogation Methods, Christine D. Salmon Jan 2008

Dna Is Different:Implications Of The Public Perception Ofdna Evidence On Police Interrogation Methods, Christine D. Salmon

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

These reform proposals have been met with vehement criticism, most of which stem from a concern that any attempt to prohibit or regulate deceptive interrogation methods would decrease the number of confessions and convictions produced by the criminal justice system. With these concerns in mind, this article proposes a different, more moderate reform: a per se ban on the falsification of DNA evidence during police interrogations. This proposal differs from those described above in three important ways. First, the prohibition on fabricating DNA evidence does not require a change in the voluntariness test used to ascertain the admissibility of a …

Breaking Ground: Planning And Building In Priority Growth Districts, John R. Nolon, Jessica A. Bacher Jan 2008

Breaking Ground: Planning And Building In Priority Growth Districts, John R. Nolon, Jessica A. Bacher

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

It is now understood that compact, mixed use development prevents the ill effects of sprawl and can mitigate climate change significantly. There is an innovative land use technique that can be used by communities to manage and define future growth in a way that provides for such developments and creates more livable places, places that are environmentally, socially, and fiscally sound. Specifically, a community may create Priority Growth Districts, or PGDs, and thereby direct development to selected locations and also specify design standards that meet the needs of the community's current and future residents.

Hydrologic Response To Extreme Warm And Cold Summers In The Mcmurdo Dry Valleys, East Antarctica, Peter T. Doran, Christopher P. Mckay, Andrew G. Fountain, Thomas H. Nylen, Diane M. Mcknight, Chris Jaros, John E. Barrett

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

The meteorological characteristics and hydrological response of an extreme warm, and cold summer in the McMurdo Dry Valleys are compared. The driver behind the warmer summer conditions was the occurrence of down-valley winds, which were not present during the colder summer. Occurrence of the summer down-valley winds coincided with lower than typical mean sea level pressure in the Ross Sea region. There was no significant difference in the amount of solar radiation received during the two summers. Compared to the cold summer, glaciological and hydrological response to the warm summer in Taylor Valley included significant glacier mass loss, and 3- …

A Laboratory Study Of Struvite Precipitation For Phosphorus Removal From Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation Wastewater, Sushmita Dhakal Jan 2008

A Laboratory Study Of Struvite Precipitation For Phosphorus Removal From Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation Wastewater, Sushmita Dhakal

Masters Theses

"Struvite precipitation occurs spontaneously in many wastewater treatment facilities as a nuisance. However, struvite precipitation is now being studied as a method to concurrently treat high phosphorus wastewaters and generate a valuable product. Many factors influence the precipitation of struvite such as component -ion molar ratios, pH, aeration, solubility, solids and mixing energy. In the present work, struvite precipitation in the actual swine wastewater was studied by strategically controlling aeration, pH, and mixing"--Abstract, page iv.

Business Risk In Early Design: An Approach, Rahul Basavaraj Patil Jan 2008

Business Risk In Early Design: An Approach, Rahul Basavaraj Patil

Masters Theses

"The Business Risk in Early Design (B-RED) method is a tool used to determine the potential risks in business, in the early business development stages. In order to launch a successful business in today's competitive market environment, the business should equip itself to face the risks involved in business. If the potential risks are identified even before the launch of the business, then there is an opportunity to avert risks with little or no impact to the budget and schedule. The B-RED method presented in this thesis helps entrepreneurs and people with little or no experience in business to identify …

Individual-Based Artificial Ecosystems For Design And Optimization, Shivakar Vulli Jan 2008

Individual-Based Artificial Ecosystems For Design And Optimization, Shivakar Vulli

Masters Theses

"Individual-based modeling has gained popularity over the last decade, mainly due to the paradigm's proven ability to address a variety of problems seen in many disciplines, including modeling complex systems from bottom-up, providing relationship between component level and system level parameters, and discovering the emergence of system-level behaviors from simple component level interactions. Availability of computational power to run simulation models with thousands to millions of agents is another driving force in the widespread adoption of individual-based modeling. This thesis proposes an individual-based modeling approach for solving engineering design and optimization problems using artificial ecosystems"--Abstract, page iii.

Co-Optimization: A Generalization Of Coevolution, Travis Service Jan 2008

Co-Optimization: A Generalization Of Coevolution, Travis Service

Masters Theses

"Many problems encountered in computer science are best stated in terms of interactions amongst individuals. For example, many problems are most naturally phrased in terms of finding a candidate solution which performs best against a set of test cases. In such situations, methods are needed to find candidate solutions which are expected to perform best over all test cases. Coevolution holds the promise of addressing such problems by employing principles from biological evolution, where populations of candidate solutions and test cases are evolved over time to produce higher quality solutions...This thesis presents a generalization of coevolution to co-optimization, where optimization …

"A time series is a sequence of data measured at successive time intervals. Time series analysis refers to all of the methods employed to understand such data, either with the purpose of explaining the underlying system producing the data or to try to predict future data points in the time series...An evolutionary algorithm is a non-deterministic method of searching a solution space, and modeled after biological evolutionary processes. A learning classifier system (LCS) is a form of evolutionary algorithm that operates on a population of mapping rules. We introduce the time series classifier TSC, a new type of LCS that …

Evaluation Of Su8 And Ruthenium Oxide Materials For Microfluidic Devices, Margaret Theresa Audrain Jan 2008

Evaluation Of Su8 And Ruthenium Oxide Materials For Microfluidic Devices, Margaret Theresa Audrain

Masters Theses

"This thesis investigates two materials, SU8 photoresist and RuO₂, for possible incorporation into a self-calibrating microfluidic biosensor. The negative, epoxy based photoresist SU8 has been widely used in the fabrication of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) devices. This is due to its many desirable features that make it a suitable material for a wide variety of MEMS applications. The effects cross-linking (exposure dose) and bonding time have on bond strength and plasma modification of the SU8 surface were investigated as well as the bond strength of etched SU8. It was shown that adhesive bonding was an effective method of bonding, with bond …

Carbon Credits And Energy Subsidies In Economic Decision Making For Confined Animal Feedlot Operation Waste Treatment, Taresh Grover Jan 2008

Carbon Credits And Energy Subsidies In Economic Decision Making For Confined Animal Feedlot Operation Waste Treatment, Taresh Grover

Masters Theses

"Released waste into the environment has always had a societal cost. Current issues with swine waste suggest that improved treatment is needed as agricultural production has become more industry-like and also as we now globally value the mitigation of global warming. The current need for and the economic support of advanced waste treatment has converged for animal agriculture, and now improved waste treatment is possible with concurrent economic benefit through alternative energy and carbon emissions. Recent changes have resulted in renewal of interest in anaerobic digestion (AD) technology with methane capture and energy production. An economic model was constructed to …

Role Of Microtubules In Budding Yeast Cytokinesis, Su Young Park Jan 2008

Role Of Microtubules In Budding Yeast Cytokinesis, Su Young Park

Masters Theses

"Cytokinesis is an important step to finish cell cycle events and separate into two daughter cells. This event is driven by actomyosin ring contraction. In budding yeast, the mitotic exit network (MEN) controls completion of ana/telophase by signaling events. Bub2 is a mitotic exit network regulator and binds to Tem1p which is an important component in MEN. Mad2 is a component of a separate spindle checkpoint. Mad2 dependent pathway prevents the metaphase to anaphase transition under spindle damage. Because yeast cells have cell walls, septum formation follows actin ring contraction. Here it was investigated how microtubule defects affect cytokinesis in …

Aflp Fingerprint Analysis Of Hybrid Salamanders In The Missouri Caverns Section Of Onondaga Cave, Maria Louise Potter

Masters Theses

"Two species and one subspecies of salamander in the genus Eurycea, two species of Plethodon and one species of Typhlotriton (recently considered to be Eurycea) salamander currently reside in an area of Onondaga Cave known as the Missouri Caverns section. Due to the presence of two known interbreeding subspecies of salamanders, Eurycea Longicauda (Long-tailed salamander) and Eurycea longicauda melanopleura (Dark-sided salamander), the possibility may exist for interbreeding of one or all of these taxa. Specifically, it is hypothesized that the two species of Eurycea longicauda may interbreed with Eurycea lucifuga (Cave salamander). through visual assessment and phenotypic analysis, …

Co-Evolutionary Automated Software Correction: A Proof Of Concept, Joshua Lee Wilkerson Jan 2008

Co-Evolutionary Automated Software Correction: A Proof Of Concept, Joshua Lee Wilkerson

Masters Theses

"The task of ensuring that a software artifact is correct can be a very time consuming process. To be able to say that an algorithm is correct is to say that it will produce results in accordance with its specifications for all valid input. One possible way to identify an incorrect implementation is through the use of automated testing (currently an open problem in the field of software engineering); however, actually correcting the implementation is typically a manual task for the software developer. In this thesis a system is presented which automates not only the testing but also the correction …

The Identification And Characterization Of Phenylalanine Ammonia-Lyase Gene Family Members In Glycine Max, Erin Kathleen Pringle Jan 2008

The Identification And Characterization Of Phenylalanine Ammonia-Lyase Gene Family Members In Glycine Max, Erin Kathleen Pringle

Masters Theses

"Gene families are collections of genes with similar functions. Studying gene families is important for understanding the evolution of genes and manipulating genes. Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) is an enzyme found in plants. It catalyzes the deamination of phenylalanine to produce cinnamic acid. Genes for PAL have been identified in many different plant species. This project used the known sequence for the PAL1 gene in Glycine max to find other PAL genes in Glycine max"--Abstract, page iii.

A Rapid Method For Determination Of Alpha Hydroxy Acids In Seawater And Biological Fluids At Trace Levels, Ryan Lee Schwiderski Jan 2008

A Rapid Method For Determination Of Alpha Hydroxy Acids In Seawater And Biological Fluids At Trace Levels, Ryan Lee Schwiderski

Masters Theses

"Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) - carboxylic acids with a hydroxyl substitution on the alpha carbon are an important class of molecules. Hydroxy Methyl Thiobutanoic Acid (HMTBA) is an α-hydroxy analog of essential amino acid methionine; it finds extensive use as a feed supplement for avian and bovine species. Efficacy of alpha hydroxy acid uptake is important for nutritional studies and such studies rely on accurate and precise methods for determination of these chemicals in biological samples. Several methods for AHAs determination have been reported, however, the methods are tedious, requiring multiple sample preparation steps. Experiments reported in this thesis were …

An Approach For Human Swarm Interaction, Shishir Bashyal Jan 2008

An Approach For Human Swarm Interaction, Shishir Bashyal

Masters Theses

"This study shows that appropriate human interaction can benefit a swarm of robots to reach to goal more efficiently. The common belief in swarm robotics that user intervention adversely affects intelligence of the swarm is studied carefully to show that the traditional human-robot interaction approaches are not suitable for human swarm interaction. A set of desirable features for human swarm interaction is identified and an interaction architecture is proposed that has all of the desirable features. A swarm simulation environment is then created that allows simulating a swarm behavior in an indoor environment. Three different applications of the swarm are …

Synthesis Of Nanostructured Conducting Polymers And Their Application As Gas Sensors, Zhe-Fei Li Jan 2008

Synthesis Of Nanostructured Conducting Polymers And Their Application As Gas Sensors, Zhe-Fei Li

Masters Theses

"A single-step, bottom-up technique based on a nanostructured conducting polymer has been used to fabricate sensors. Small amounts of aqueous solutions of aniline, a dopant, and an oxidant were placed on an interdigitated electrode array. Ultraviolet (UV)-irradiation of the solutions enhanced polymerization, yielding a highly porous film of polyaniline nanofibers with mean diameters of around 100 nm and lengths on the order of 1 µm. Solutions that were not irradiated formed bulk-like polyaniline films. Nanofibers and bulk polyaniline sensors were exposed to vapors in an argon carrier gas including: chloroform, a weak proton donor; toluene, a vapor that causes polymer …

Release And Removal Of Microcystins From Microcystis During Disinfection Treatments, Jie Ding Jan 2008

Release And Removal Of Microcystins From Microcystis During Disinfection Treatments, Jie Ding

Masters Theses

"The presence of algal toxins, or cyanotoxins, in surface water has been increasingly reported. These highly hazardous toxins are potential threat to both human health and animals by contaminating drinking water sources over the world. In this research project, inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa cells and release and removal of intracellular microcystins during several oxidative and physical treatments was studied. The results of this study show that chlorine dioxide, sonication, low salinity and quick blending with tissuemiser caused immediate release of microcystin-LR to water after treatment. No significant increase of toxin level was observed after treatment with free chlorine, ozone, permanganate, …

Modeling Kinetics Of Hydrolysis Of Three Pesticides In Laboratory Waters, Michelle Kim Marincel Jan 2008

Modeling Kinetics Of Hydrolysis Of Three Pesticides In Laboratory Waters, Michelle Kim Marincel

Masters Theses

"Pesticides and pesticide degradates found in drinking water sources are of particular concern to human health. When treated and disinfected at a drinking water plant, pesticides etridiazole, metribuzin, and diazinon undergo many treatment processes including lime softening, where the water pH is raised to 10 for calcium removal or 11 for magnesium removal. This thesis focuses on modeling the kinetics of hydrolysis of three pesticides that have the potential to undergo hydrolysis in drinking water plants. Linearly and non-linearly regressed first order and non-linearly regressed second order models were applied to the experimental data and compared to limited literature values. …
