The spectroscopic properties of a chiral boronic acid based resorcinarene macrocycle employed for chiral analysis were investigated. Specifically, the emission and excitation characteristics of tetraarylboronate resorcinarene macrocycle (TBRM) and its quantum yield were evaluated. The chiral selector TBRM was investigated as a chiral reagent for the enantiomeric discrimination of amino acids using steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy. Chiral recognition of amino acids in the presence of the macrocycle was based on diastereomeric complexes. Results demonstrated that TBRM had better chiral discrimination ability for lysine as compared to the other amino acids. The productivity and life history diversity of salmonids is linked to the complexity of habitat in large floodplain rivers. Dynamic floodplain processes are driven by flow, sediment transport, cut and fill alluviation, woody plant succession, and ecosystem engineers, notably beavers, that create dynamic and biophysically complex off-channel rearing and spawning habitats. Sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) display some of the most variable life history traits of all Pacific salmon, using lake and river rearing strategies throughout rivers of the northern Pacific Rim. As a result of the Indian slave trade in the American Southwest, a group of detribalized Indians emerged in New Mexico during the Spanish colonial period. These Indians came to be known as the genízaros and, through the process scholars call ethnogenesis, developed their own identity by incorporating Hispano-Christian cultural practices while preserving their native ways. The genízaros were products of a widespread and lucrative trade in Plains Indian captives and, as such, they represented various tribes, including Apaches, Navajos, Comanches, Kiowas, Pawnees, Utes and Wichitas. The purpose of this scholarly project was to develop a manual for parents of children ages birth to five years. The manual includes significant milestones and provides age-appropriate activities which can be used to facilitate development.

A literature review was conducted to identify how play is used to achieve developmental milestones. Resources included journal articles and textbooks from the disciplines of occupational therapy, psychology, education, and medicine.

A manual for parents was created and consists of a discussion on the importance of play in development, expected milestones, occupation-based interventions, and resources regarding child development. This manual is intended for distribution …

The yearbook was given its present day title, The Cupola, in 1961. We show that a set is m-autoreducible if and only if it is m-mitotic. This solves a long-standing open question in a surprising way. As a consequence of this unconditional result and recent work by Glaßer et al., complete sets for all of the following complexity classes are m-mitotic: NP, coNP, ⊕P, PSPACE, and NEXP, as well as all levels of PH, MODPH, and the Boolean hierarchy over NP. In the cases of NP, PSPACE, NEXP, and PH, this at once answers several well-studied open questions. These results tell us that complete sets share a redundancy that was not known …

It has been hypothesized that the cell adhesion molecule Basigin and the lactate transporter monocarboxylate transporter-1 (MCT1) interact to form a lactate shuttle necessary to fuel photoreceptor neurons in the retina. The purpose of this study was to characterize the interaction between the two proteins. Specifically, the amino acids within MCT1 that interact with Basigin were investigated. MCT1 is a large protein. Therefore, the complementary DNA (cDNA) for MCT1 was divided in half via the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and each half was cloned into a bacterial expression vector to generate protein probes. Babesia microti is the causative agent of human babesiosis. Black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) are the only proven vector and white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) serve as the main reservoir in northeastern United States. The aim of the present study was to determine if B. microti is present in small mammals in southeastern United States and to compare strains found in this study to reference strains from around the world. Blood samples were obtained from cotton mice, cotton rats, a flying squirrel, golden mice, rice rats, Virginia opossums, wood rats, and raccoons in northeastern Florida. Photosynthetic pigments and stable isotopes from suspended particulate organic matter (POM) and surface sediment of the southeast Beaufort Sea, including the Mackenzie shelf and the Amundsen Gulf, were studied during fall 2003 and summer 2004. This multiple-biomarker approach led to an increased understanding of spatial and seasonal variation in pelagic–benthic coupling, as these 2 biomarkers reflect inherent differences in the time scales over which they integrate. Sedimentary pigments highlighted the importance of local water-column production as a source of phytodetrital inputs to the sea floor. At one time, biofuels were the only way humanity obtained useful energy, but they were almost totally displaced by fossil fuels during the last century. Now, due to a range of drivers, they have begun a small but seemingly solid comeback. This Article reviews the remaining barriers to full commercial success for biofuels in the United States with an emphasis on transportation fuels. Internet victimization of children is a recent phenomenon that is now widely studied. The various predictors of Internet victimization have received less attention. My study measures Online Interpersonal Victimization, which includes harassment and sexual solicitations. I analyze victimization using the Family Context model and Routine Activities and Lifestyles Theory to examine how relationships with parents contribute to youth victimization.

This study uses 2005 data from the Youth Internet Safety Survey (YISS2), a nationally representative sample of youth Internet users and their parents. Survey participants (N=1500) were regular Internet users between the ages of 10 and 17. It was hypothesized that …

Research on the impact of multiple role management on mental health outcomes has yet to consider the implications of a recreational athlete role. Role Conflict theory predicts that incorporating this additional role would increase potential for stress manifested as a mental health problem. Role Expansion theory predicts the social qualities of this additional role can be helpful in buffering against stress. Despite extensive research on the resources required to initiate dechlorination of trichloroethene (TCE), slow rates and stalling continue to be observed in situ. The majority of research on biodegradation of TCE has focused resource availability, while predation is poorly understood. Predation has the potential to significantly alter bacterial abundance, and can play an important role in selecting what species are present, and determine if the community is capable of mineralizing TCE. I investigated the ability of Burkholderia cenocepacia, an opportunistic bacterial pathogen, to adapt to a host. Studies have identified trade-offs associated with environmental adaptation, but few have investigated host adaptation. Consequently, I studied effects of adaptation by B. cenocepacia to onions (Allium cepa) on the ability to kill Caenorhabditis elegans. I hypothesized that adaptation to onions would reduce virulence in C. elegans. I evolved twelve populations of bacteria in onion tissue medium for 500 generations. Then, I quantified fitness differences between evolved and ancestral populations by direct competition, having developed molecular marking techniques to discriminate among competitors. The northern shrimp Pandalus borealis is a commercially important crustacean found in the deep waters of western Gulf of Maine. In order to develop better fisheries management practices, it is essential to understand variability in P. borealis recruitment. Analysis of samples collected along a coastal transect (during 2005 and 2006), indicate cross-shore distribution of early planktonic larval stages is consistent with observed benthic distribution of ovigerous females. Timing of larval occurrence in relation to the spring phytoplankton bloom suggests that a match/mismatch with abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton prey may be a primary determinant of recruitment success. Previously, itaconic acid (IA) was known to be at best a difficult monomer to be polymerized. Here we report effective conditions for an easy polymerization of itaconic acid to high conversion and high molecular weight. tert-Butyl Hydroperoxide (tBHP) was used as an efficient initiator for solution polymerization of IA. Conversions higher than 90% can be reached in less than 1hr. Molecular weights of poly(itaconic acid) have been analyzed in GPC. The structure of PIA was studied by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR. The initiator concentration dependence and monomer concentration effect have been investigated.

Invasive species pose a threat to the balance of intertidal ecosystems. Recently, two forms of the non-native species, Porphyra yezoensis Ueda, were found at multiple sites between New York and Downcast Maine. A 2007 New England survey confirmed the presence of P. yezoensis f. yezoensis at nine sites, including two beyond its reported distribution. Porphyra yezoensis f narawaensis A. Miura was found at four sites in Long Island Sound. TCDD is a reproductive toxicant and endocrine disruptor, yet the mechanisms by which it causes these reproductive alterations are not fully understood. In order to provide additional insight into the molecular mechanisms that underlie TCDD's reproductive toxicity, we assessed TCDD-induced transcriptional changes in the ovary as they relate to previously described impacts on serum estradiol concentrations and altered follicular development in zebrafish. In silico computational approaches were used to correlate candidate regulatory motifs with observed changes in gene expression. Our data suggest that TCDD inhibits follicle maturation via attenuated gonadotropin responsiveness and/or depressed estradiol biosynthesis, and that interference of estrogen-regulated …
