Acute renal colic is probably one of the most excruciatingly painful event a person can endure. [1]. Though this is typical of urinary tract calculi, it’s important to note that non-calculus and non-genitourinary conditions can present in a similar manner. Unenhanced helical CT (CT KUB), originally described by Smith et al [2] in 1995, is one single radiological test that has proven successful in the valuation of patients presenting with renal colic. Injury in fact has been and remains the most controversial component of the environmental standing test within and outside the context of global environmental harms. Part I of this Article discusses the background context of environmental standing for global environmental harms and its corresponding origins in procedural and substantive injury claims in cases involving purely domestic environmental harms. This Article advocates that other states follow their lead and depart from what is described as the "Gutenberg Paradigm" by adopting similar legislation and embracing electronic technology. In an age of increasing interjurisdictional water conflict and water management concern, the list of accomplishments of the Boundary Water Treaty of 1909 (BWT), reached in a harmonious manner, raises the possibility that, perhaps, the management mechanisms of the BWT might beneficially be used in other contexts. This Article will take up that possibility in the context of three contemporary American interstate water allocation disputes. This article challenges along two lines Milton Friedman's injunction that the sole role of the business manager is to maximize profits for shareholders using all legal and ethical means. First, it shows how Friedman overly narrows the manager's moral duties to consequentialist profit maximization and thereby fails to account for a wide range of values and virtues necessary for good management. Second, it illustrates how more oblique approaches to management as well as Adam Smith's virtue-based model better capture the moral imagination and relational aspects of leadership that are critical to good management today. The patterning of photoactive purple membrane (PM) films onto electronic substrates to create a biologically based light detection device was investigated. This research is part of a larger collaborative effort to develop a miniaturized toxin detection platform. This platform will utilize PM films containing the photoactive protein bacteriorhodopsin to convert light energy to electrical energy.

Following an effort to pattern PM films using focused ion beam machining, the photolithography based bacteriorhodopsin patterning technique (PBBPT) was developed. The purpose of this study was to determine if a gender bias exists in perceptions of a healthy vs. unhealthy lifestyle. The study was a 2 (male or female) x 2 (healthy or unhealthy) between subjects factorial design. College students (N = 53) read a scenario describing a lifestyle of a stimulus person. The participants then answered a 16-item questionnaire. The hypothesis that there is a gender difference in perceptions of a healthy lifestyle was not strongly supported. There was a strong main effect for the type of lifestyle with participants viewing the healthy lifestyle more positively. The hypothesis that …

Elaeagnus umbellata (Thunb.), commonly known as autumn olive, belongs to the family Elaeagnaceae and is native to the Himalayan regions of Pakistan, China, and India and is also found in Korea and Japan. The seeds of 8 ecotypes from Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan, were analyzed at UPM Malaysia for comparisons of their relationship and evolution based on SDS-PAGE of total seed proteins. The results indicated that each autumn olive population can be distinguished by their own specific protein bands with reference to a molecular weight marker included in the gel. A vigorous discussion exists regarding the need to provide exclusive patent rights as incentives to invent and to disclose so-called "research tools," whether such exclusive rights should apply to all uses and users of patented research tools, and whether exclusive rights to prohibit all uses of research tools would unduly discourage sequential invention. This article summarizes recent developments under U.S. patent laws of particular relevance to the debate over the patenting of research tools, and provides some insights into the practices of various academic sciences, industries, and government agencies regarding the treatment of these important inventions. This article examines the issue of gun control through the lens of the 'comprehensive rationality' and 'incrementalism' models of policymaking and argues that incremental policymaking has been one of the major impediments to progress toward more effective regulation of guns. Gun laws are often an incoherent patch-work of provisions as new restrictions are piled atop old ones in response to particular tragedies or narrow concerns, instead of crafting bills to achieve an optimal approach to the entire problem. In 1993, the Supreme Court of Hawaii issued a decision that forced the question of same-sex marriage from the hinterland of academic speculation to the front pages of newspapers all over the country. The nation was stunned when the court in Baehr v. Lewin held that same-sex marriage might be compelled by the state constitution of Hawaii. Since the Baehr decision, same-sex marriage has received a significant amount of attention. Many states have passed “baby DOMAs,” all of which limit marriage to the union of a man and a woman. This Article focuses upon two basic but under-explored questions: when does, and when should, the state use the criminal justice apparatus to burden individuals on account of their familial status? We address the first question in Part I by revealing a variety of laws permeating the criminal justice system that together form a string of family ties burdens, laws that impose punishment upon individuals on account of their familial status. The seven burdens we train our attention upon are omissions liability for failure to rescue, parental responsibility laws, incest, bigamy, adultery, nonpayment of child support, and nonpayment of parental support. …

Conversations about the constitutionality of prohibitions on marriage for same-sex couples invariably reduce to the question of whether a meaningful analogy can be drawn between restrictions on same-sex marriage and antimiscegenation laws. In an effort to refocus this debate, this article considers the California Supreme Court's 1948 decision in Perez v. Sharp and its use by advocates in recent litigation to secure marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples. Velo-cardio-facial syndrome is one of the names that has been attached to one of the most common multiple anomaly syndromes in humans. The labels DiGeorge sequence, 22q11 deletion syndrome, conotruncal anomalies face syndrome, CATCH 22, and Sedlačková syndrome have all been attached to the same disorder. Velo-cardio-facial syndrome has an expansive phenotype with more than 180 clinical features described that involve essentially every organ and system. Aims: To investigate radiation-induced oxidative damage in erythrocytes after administration of radioiodine-131 (^{131}I) in patients with hyperthyroidism. Materials and Methods: Twenty patients with hyperthyroidism (11 F, 9 M) treated with ^{131}I were included into the study. Blood samples were taken from patients just before, 1 hour after and 3 hours after applying radioiodine. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and levels of antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase (GPX), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were measured to evaluate the radiation-induced oxidative damage. Aim: To document the efficacy of low-dose long-term oral macrolide treatment in the management of sinonasal polyposis. The study was designed prospectively in a group of patients with sinonasal polyposis and negative history of surgery. Materials and Methods: Ten patients were administered roxithromycin (RXM) 150 mg/day single oral dose for eight weeks. All patients underwent Tc-99m rhinoscintigraphic evaluation of mucociliary activity and endoscopic evaluation before and after the treatments. Agro-industrial waste presents an alternative to inorganic fertilizer. It is possible to use tobacco waste as a soil amendment due to its high organic matter and low toxic element content. Tobacco waste compost (TWC) and farmyard manure (FYM) were applied to Typic Xerofluvent soil at various ratios, and butter-head lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. Capitata L.) was grown. The effects on soil organic C and total N content, soil microbial biomass, soil respiration, activity of 4 enzymes (dehydrogenase, urease, alkaline phosphatase, and \beta-glucosidase), and lettuce yield were determined. Isozymes from 12 enzyme systems extracted from haploid female gametophytes of the seeds were separated by horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. In the 12 enzyme systems, 16 loci and 37 alleles were observed. Average proportion of polymorphic loci for the populations ranged from 43.8% to 62.5%.
