The Future Of Nanotechnology Risk Perceptions: An Experimental Investigation Of Two Hypotheses, Donald Braman, Dan M. Kahan, Paul Slovic, John Gastil, Geoffrey L. Cohen Jan 2008

The Future Of Nanotechnology Risk Perceptions: An Experimental Investigation Of Two Hypotheses, Donald Braman, Dan M. Kahan, Paul Slovic, John Gastil, Geoffrey L. Cohen

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This paper reports the results of an experiment designed to test competing conjectures about the evolution of public attitudes toward nanotechnology. The rational enlightenment hypothesis holds that members of the public will become favorably disposed to nanotechnology as balanced and accurate information about it disseminates. The cultural cognition hypothesis, in contrast, holds that members of the public are likely to polarize along cultural lines when exposed to such information. Using a between-subjects design (N = 1,862), the experiment compared the perceptions of subjects exposed to balanced information on the risks and benefits of nanotechnology to the perceptions of subjects exposed …

Necessary Subjects: The Need For A Mandatory National Donor Gamete Registry, Naomi R. Cahn Jan 2008

Necessary Subjects: The Need For A Mandatory National Donor Gamete Registry, Naomi R. Cahn

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This brief article calls for a mandatory national donor gamete registry. It first discusses the history of secrecy in the adoption context before turning to issues involving confidentiality in the donor context. After analyzing the issues involved in maintaining the secrecy of donor gametes, the article ultimately recommends the establishment of a national information registry, similar to that in place in numerous other countries, to keep track of children both through donor egg, embryo, and sperm, as well as the identities of the gamete providers. Participation in the registry would be mandatory for anyone involved in supplying donor gametes. Once …

Children And Religious Expression In School: A Comparative Treatment Of The Veil And Other Religious Symbols In Western Democracies, Catherine J. Ross Jan 2008

Children And Religious Expression In School: A Comparative Treatment Of The Veil And Other Religious Symbols In Western Democracies, Catherine J. Ross

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Whether and how to accommodate students' personal religious symbols worn in public schools are part of a mounting global debate. The competing claims of the body politic and the religious or cultural identity of minority groups came to a head in what the French called the "affair of the veil." This chapter examines the problem of the veil from a cross-cultural perspective, comparing the United States to several other western democracies. The comparison involves both legal and cultural premises. In each instance, the analysis must consider the fundamental values of the body politic, the laws and covenants that govern decision-making, …

Painting The Sublime Landscape And Learning To See Nature Along The Way, Deborah Browne Jan 2008

Painting The Sublime Landscape And Learning To See Nature Along The Way, Deborah Browne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My thesis is one artist's response to the question of the relevance of landscape painting today, focusing on the communication of the idea of environmental stewardship. The process of studying nature and transferring that vision to canvas promotes greater understanding of the beauty and complexity of elements that comprise ecosystems. The artist possesses a creative impulse finding satisfaction in making artwork that expresses a love of nature as part of a larger worldview. If done well, the persuasive power of such art may be enormous. Comprised of oil paintings and written work, this thesis establishes a way of approaching both …

A Customer Programmable Microfluidic System, Miao Liu Jan 2008

A Customer Programmable Microfluidic System, Miao Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Microfluidics is both a science and a technology offering great and perhaps even revolutionary capabilities to impact the society in the future. However, due to the scaling effects there are unknown phenomena and technology barriers about fluidics in microchannel, material properties in microscale and interactions with fluids are still missing. A systematic investigation has been performed aiming to develop "A Customer Programmable Microfluidic System". This innovative Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based microfluidic system provides a bio-compatible platform for bio-analysis systems such as Lab-on-a-chip, micro-total-analysis system and biosensors as well as the applications such as micromirrors. The system consists of an array of microfluidic …

Optical Solitons In Periodic Structures, Konstantinos Makris Jan 2008

Optical Solitons In Periodic Structures, Konstantinos Makris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

By nature discrete solitons represent self-trapped wavepackets in nonlinear periodic structures and result from the interplay between lattice diffraction (or dispersion) and material nonlinearity. In optics, this class of self-localized states has been successfully observed in both one-and two-dimensional nonlinear waveguide arrays. In recent years such lattice structures have been implemented or induced in a variety of material systems including those with cubic (Kerr), quadratic, photorefractive, and liquid-crystal nonlinearities. In all cases the underlying periodicity or discreteness leads to new families of optical solitons that have no counterpart whatsoever in continuous systems. In the first part of this dissertation, a …

Emotional Evaluation Of A Product/System, Hana Smith Jan 2008

Emotional Evaluation Of A Product/System, Hana Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Technological advances in products and systems have brought emotional design or emotional engineering to the forefront of research. While several measures to assess emotional expression of products have been developed, the source of the emotion rating of a product or system was often unclear. The purpose of this dissertation is to conduct three studies to examine the causes of emotional ratings and to establish if product-specific emotion rating scales are useful for capturing accurate user evaluations. Three studies were conducted using citrus juicers. Juicers were chosen for several reasons: their wide variety of styles, one self-explanatory purpose (to make juice), …

Adolescents' Stress And Health: Parental Influences And Cognitive Mediators, Reesa Donnelly Jan 2008

Adolescents' Stress And Health: Parental Influences And Cognitive Mediators, Reesa Donnelly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research to date indicates that parental and cognitive variables play a role in stress responses and health outcomes. Although researchers are beginning to focus on developmental processes in stress/health outcomes, there is little research examining which parental behaviors are most predictive of stress/health and whether cognitive variables mediate this relationship. As a result, the current study examines the self-reports of 160 late adolescents regarding parental behaviors, cognitive variables, and stress/health outcomes. In addition, blood pressure reactivity to a stressful situation was collected as a physiological measure of stress. The results suggest that, among the parental behaviors that are examined, parental …

Habitat Condition And Associated Macrofauna Reflect Differences Between Protected And Exposed Seagrass Landscapes, Chet F. Rakocinski, Cynthia A. Moncreiff, Mark S. Peterson, Katherine E. Vanderkooy, Todd A. Randall Jan 2008

Habitat Condition And Associated Macrofauna Reflect Differences Between Protected And Exposed Seagrass Landscapes, Chet F. Rakocinski, Cynthia A. Moncreiff, Mark S. Peterson, Katherine E. Vanderkooy, Todd A. Randall

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Seagrass landscape configurations associated with different physical settings can affect habitat-structure and plant-animal relationships. We compared shoal grass (Halodule wrightii) habitat and macrofaunal variables between two fragmented seagrass landscapes at barrier-island locations subject to different disturbance regimes. Five seagrass habitat variables including above ground biomass (AGB), shoot number, per shoot biomass, epiphyte biomass and below ground biomass (BGB), differed significantly between the island landscapes. Per shoot biomass and epiphyte biomass also varied significantly over the seagrass growing season; and epiphyte biomass showed a strong landscape-time interaction. Abundances of microgastropods normalized to AGB differed significantly between landscapes. An inverse …

Seasonal Patterns Of Juvenile Fish Abundance In Seagrass Meadows In Teague Bay Bank Barrier Reef Lagoon, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Ivan Mateo, William J. Tobias

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Considerable knowledge has been gained regarding fish use of nearshore habitats such as seagrass meadows or mangrove lagoons in the Caribbean (e.g., evaluation of nursery value, trophic linkages). However, few studies have been conducted on fish recruitment to seagrass habitat around the Caribbean. Juvenile reef fish in seagrass meadows at Teague Bay, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands were surveyed from October 1998 through September 1999 using a visual census technique. Grunts (Haemulidae) were the most abundant juveniles observed (60% of all fish), followed by wrasses (Labridae, 20%) and parrotfishes (Scaridae, 13%). French grunt, Haemulon flavolineatum, were the most numerous …

An Unusual Reaction And Other Observations Of Sperm Whales Near Fixed-Wing Aircraft, Mari A. Smultea, Joseph R. Mobley Jr., Dagmar Fertl, Gregory L. Fulling Jan 2008

An Unusual Reaction And Other Observations Of Sperm Whales Near Fixed-Wing Aircraft, Mari A. Smultea, Joseph R. Mobley Jr., Dagmar Fertl, Gregory L. Fulling

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Reported behavioral reactions by sperm whales to aircraft are sparse, highly variable, and largely anecdotal as summarized below. Observers since the whaling era began have noted that sperm whales tend to be skittish (Whitehead 2003). When documented, sperm whale reactions to both planes and helicopters range from no reaction (Clarke 1956, Gambell 1968, Green et al. 1992) to reactions such as increased surface intervals and dramatic behavioral changes (Clarke 1956, Fritts et al. 1983, Mullin et al. 1991, Würsig et al. 1998, Richter et al. 2003, 2006). Given the lack of supporting data for either case, it is important that …

Documentation Of A Gulf Sturgeon Spawning Site On The Yellow River, Alabama, Usa, Brian R. Kreiser, J. Berg, M. Randall, F. Parauka, S. Floyd, B. Young, K. Sulak Jan 2008

Documentation Of A Gulf Sturgeon Spawning Site On The Yellow River, Alabama, Usa, Brian R. Kreiser, J. Berg, M. Randall, F. Parauka, S. Floyd, B. Young, K. Sulak

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The Gulf Sturgeon Recovery Plan (USFWS, GSMFC and NMFS 1995) stressed the need to provide maximum protection to Gulf sturgeon spawning habitat. The approach employed by various Gulf sturgeon researchers, including ourselves, to document spawning has been to identify potential spawning habitat on the basis of physical characteristics and/or tracking data, collect eggs, and then raise the eggs in the laboratory until the point where the larval fish can be identified (e.g., Marchant and Shutters 1996, Sulak and Clugston 1998, 1999). However, collecting eggs in any appreciable number is usually difficult, and these eggs may not always be viable upon …

Absorption Spectral Slopes And Slope Ratios As Indicators Of Molecular Weight, Source, And Photobleaching Of Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter, John R. Helms, Aron Stubbins, Jason D. Ritchie, Elizabeth C. Minor, David J. Kieber, Kenneth Mopper Jan 2008

Absorption Spectral Slopes And Slope Ratios As Indicators Of Molecular Weight, Source, And Photobleaching Of Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter, John R. Helms, Aron Stubbins, Jason D. Ritchie, Elizabeth C. Minor, David J. Kieber, Kenneth Mopper

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

A new approach for parameterizing dissolved organic matter ( DOM) ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra is presented. Two distinct spectral slope regions ( 275-295 nm and 350-400 nm) within log-transformed absorption spectra were used to compare DOM from contrasting water types, ranging from wetlands (Great Dismal Swamp and Suwannee River) to photobleached oceanic water ( Atlantic Ocean). On the basis of DOM size-fractionation studies ( ultrafiltration and gel filtration chromatography), the slope of the 275-295- nm region and the ratio of these slopes (SR; 275-295- nm slope : 350-400- nm slope) were related to DOM molecular weight ( MW) and …

Comparison Of Silica Polyamine Composites And Crosslinked Polystyrene Resins, Jessica Lee Wood Jan 2008

Comparison Of Silica Polyamine Composites And Crosslinked Polystyrene Resins, Jessica Lee Wood

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The development of silica polyamine composites (SPC) was inspired by the need for more environmentally benign ways of extracting and recovering technologically important and environmentally dangerous metals from waste streams. These solid phase adsorbents are designed to endure the extreme conditions associated with environmental remediation and the metal processing industry. In order for the silica polyamine composites to be viable in industry, their performance must meet or exceed the current methods of metal extraction from aqueous media. A study was undertaken to compare three silica polyamine composites: WP-2, BPAP, and CuWRAM, with their closest crosslinked polystyrene resin analogs. The studies …

Hierarchical Summer Habitat Selection By The North American Porcupine In Western Montana, Katie Ann Mally Jan 2008

Hierarchical Summer Habitat Selection By The North American Porcupine In Western Montana, Katie Ann Mally

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) has continually been a species of low priority for research and conservation efforts in the western United States. While many porcupine populations have been studied in North America, little to no research has been done on porcupines in western Montana or habitats of similar composition. More recently it has been noted that porcupine sightings have become rare in western Montana is areas where sightings were once common. Due to the overall lack of information about western porcupine populations it is imperative to gather basic natural history information in order to make informed management decisions. …

Studies Of The Dimerization And Packaging Signals In Hiv-2 Rna, Tayyba Tabassum Baig Jan 2008

Studies Of The Dimerization And Packaging Signals In Hiv-2 Rna, Tayyba Tabassum Baig

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The investigation of sequences and structures in the 5' untranslated leader region (5'UTR) of HIV genomic RNA is essential for understanding viral replication because the 5'UTR regulates several essential functions by the alternate presentation and sequestration of signals through conformational changes. Our main focus in this study was to understand those sequences and structures that are involved in dimerization and packaging of HIV-2 RNA. Progressing from previous findings, we studied in detail a 10-nucleotide palindrome sequence (pal; 5'-GGAGUGCUCC-3') of the 5'UTR, located within the major packaging signal, upstream of the dimerization signal (SL1: stem loop-1). Pal has been shown to …

Kinetics And Thermodynamics Of Salt-Dependent T7 Gene 2.5 Protein Binding To Single- And Double-Stranded Dna., Leila Shokri, Boriana Marintcheva, Mootaz Eldib, Andreas Hanke, Ioulia Rouzina, Mark C. Williams Jan 2008

Kinetics And Thermodynamics Of Salt-Dependent T7 Gene 2.5 Protein Binding To Single- And Double-Stranded Dna., Leila Shokri, Boriana Marintcheva, Mootaz Eldib, Andreas Hanke, Ioulia Rouzina, Mark C. Williams

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Bacteriophage T7 gene 2.5 protein (gp2.5) is a single-stranded DNA (ssDNA)-binding protein that has essential roles in DNA replication, recombination and repair. However, it differs from other ssDNA-binding proteins by its weaker binding to ssDNA and lack of cooperative ssDNA binding. By studying the rate-dependent DNA melting force in the presence of gp2.5 and its deletion mutant lacking 26 C-terminal residues, we probe the kinetics and thermodynamics of gp2.5 binding to ssDNA and double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). These force measurements allow us to determine the binding rate of both proteins to ssDNA, as well as their equilibrium association constants to dsDNA. …
