Turkish Journal of Botany

The major source of environmental lead (Pb) is the combustion of leaded gasoline. After emission as exhaust, lead in the air falls to earth and contaminates soil and plants. Seventeen wild chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) plant samples were collected from each of 2 urban sites in Ankara, one is located at the road side of major intercity road (heavy traffic) and the other one is located in relatively less traffic area that is about 1 km away from the first location. Lead content of chicory plants were analyzed by a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The mean lead concentrations in the …

Challenges Of In Situ Conservation Of Crop Wild Relatives, Vernon Hilton Heywood Jan 2008

Challenges Of In Situ Conservation Of Crop Wild Relatives, Vernon Hilton Heywood

Turkish Journal of Botany

Crop wild relatives (CWRs) will gain in importance as changing climates put both traditional and advanced cultivars under increasing stress, leading to a need for plant breeding to produce new varieties able to grow under the new climate regimes. Traditionally, the approach to the conservation of CWRs has been ex situ - the collection and maintenance of seed accessions in national, regional, and international germplasm banks, supplemented by field genebanks for species with recalcitrant seeds. More recently the need to maintain CWRs in their natural habitats (in situ) has been advocated. This is very different from on-farm conservation of traditional …

Synthesis, Spectroscopic And Biological Investigation Of Cyclic Octapeptide: Cherimolacyclopeptide G, Rajiv Dahiya

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A natural cyclic octapeptide cherimolacyclopeptide G (8) was synthesized by coupling of tetrapeptide units Boc-Gly-Ala-Val-Pro-OMe (5) and Boc-Ile-Tyr-Ala-Pro-OMe (6) after proper deprotection at carboxyl and amino terminals followed by cyclization of the linear peptide segment. The structure was elucidated by IR, ^1H-NMR, ^{13}C-NMR, FAB MS spectral data, and elemental analyses. The newly synthesized cyclopeptide was also evaluated for its antimicrobial, anthelmintic, and cytotoxic activities and found to exhibit potent anthelmintic and cytotoxic activity against earthworms, Megascoplex konkanensis, Pontoscotex corethruses, and Eudrilus species, and Dalton's lymphoma ascites (DLA) and Ehrlich's ascites carcinoma (EAC) cell lines. In addition, compound 8 possessed moderate …

Analysis Of Resonating Microcantilevers Operating In A Viscous Liquid Environment, Cyril Vančura, Isabelle Dufour, Stephen M. Heinrich, Fabien Josse, Andreas Hierlemann

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The characteristics of resonant cantilevers in viscous liquids are analyzed. Various rectangular cantilevers geometries are studied in pure water, glycerol and ethanol solutions of different concentrations, and the results are described in terms of the added displaced liquid mass and the liquid damping force for both, the resonance frequency and the quality factor (Q-factor). Experimental results using a set of magnetically actuated resonant cantilevers vibrating in the out-of-plane (“weak-axis bending”) mode are presented and compared to theoretical calculations. The importance of the study is in the use of resonant cantilevers as biochemical sensors in liquid environments.
