Parametric Probability Densities And Distribution Functions For Tukey G-And-H Transformations And Their Use For Fitting Data, Todd C. Headrick, Rhonda K. Kowalchuk, Yanyan Sheng
Parametric Probability Densities And Distribution Functions For Tukey G-And-H Transformations And Their Use For Fitting Data, Todd C. Headrick, Rhonda K. Kowalchuk, Yanyan Sheng
Publications
The family of g-and-h transformations are popular algorithms used for simulating non-normal distributions because of their simplicity and ease of execution. In general, two limitations associated with g-and-h transformations are that their probability density functions (pdfs) and cumulative distribution functions (cdfs) are unknown. In view of this, the g-and-h transformations’ pdfs and cdfs are derived in general parametric form. Moments are also derived and it is subsequently shown how the g and h parameters can be determined for prespecified values of skew and kurtosis. Numerical examples and parametric plots of g-and-h pdfs …
Lateral Exchange Of Larval Fish Between A Restored Backwater And A Large River In The East-Central Usa, Laura A. Csoboth, James E. Garvey
Lateral Exchange Of Larval Fish Between A Restored Backwater And A Large River In The East-Central Usa, Laura A. Csoboth, James E. Garvey
Publications
Exchange of larval fish between a river's main channel and its floodplain backwaters is compromised by sedimentation. Restoration projects to reduce sediment loading are being implemented in large rivers of the midwestern United States to curb backwater habitat loss and restore backwater-to-river connectivity. During 2004 and 2005, drift nets were set bidirectionally (with and against the flow) within a constructed channel between the Illinois River and an adjacent, 1,100-ha restored backwater, Swan Lake, to investigate the interplay between life history strategies and lateral drift on a diel and seasonal basis. Ambient larval density and species composition within the river and …
Movement And Habitat Selection By Invasive Asian Carps In A Large River, Kelly L. Degrandchamp, James E. Garvey, Robert E. Colombo
Movement And Habitat Selection By Invasive Asian Carps In A Large River, Kelly L. Degrandchamp, James E. Garvey, Robert E. Colombo
Publications
We evaluated the habitat use and movements of 50 adult bighead carp Hypophthalmichthys nobilis and 50 silver carp H. molitrix by means of ultrasonic telemetry during spring–summer 2004 and 2005 to gain insight into the conditions that facilitate their establishment, persistence, and dispersal in the lower Illinois River (river kilometer 0–130). Movement and habitat use were monitored with stationary receivers and boat-mounted tracking. The relative availability of four macrohabitat categories (main channel, island side channel, channel border, and connected backwater) was quantified to determine selection; discriminant function analysis was used to evaluate changes in physical characteristics within each category. A …

Re-Annotation Of The Physical Map Of Glycine Max For Polyploid-Like Regions By Bac End Sequence Driven Whole Genome Shotgun Read Assembly, Navinder Saini, Jeffry Shultz, David A. Lightfoot
Articles
Background
Many of the world's most important food crops have either polyploid genomes or homeologous regions derived from segmental shuffling following polyploid formation. The soybean (Glycine max) genome has been shown to be composed of approximately four thousand short interspersed homeologous regions with 1, 2 or 4 copies per haploid genome by RFLP analysis, microsatellite anchors to BACs and by contigs formed from BAC fingerprints. Despite these similar regions,, the genome has been sequenced by whole genome shotgun sequence (WGS). Here the aim was to use BAC end sequences (BES) derived from three minimum tile paths (MTP) to examine the …

The Multigeneic Rhg1 Locus: A Model For The Effects On Root Development, Nematode Resistance And Recombination Suppression, David A. Lightfoot, Ali Srour, Jawad Afzal, Navinder Saini
Articles
Soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) resistance to populations (HgType) of Heterodera glycines I., the soybean cyst nematode (SCN), requires a functional allele at rhg1. An apoptosis-like response in the giant cells formed around the nematode results 24-48 h after feeding commences. This study aimed to identify the role of the three genes within the rhg1 locus, a receptor like kinase (RLK), a laccase and an ion anti-porter. Used were near isogeneic lines (NILs) that contrasted at their rhg1 alleles. Features of the rhg1 locus, the candidate genes and their nascent transcripts and proteins in roots were elucidated. First, evidence for …

The Mediator complex provides an interface between gene-specific regulatory proteins and the general transcription machinery including RNA polymerase II (RNAP II). The complex has a modular architecture (Head, Middle, and Tail) and cryoelectron microscopy analysis suggested that it undergoes dramatic conformational changes upon interactions with activators and RNAP II. These rearrangements have been proposed to play a role in the assembly of the preinitiation complex and also to contribute to the regulatory mechanism of Mediator. In analogy to many regulatory and transcriptional proteins, we reasoned that Mediator might also utilize intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) to facilitate structural transitions and transmit …

Less Privacy Please, We're British: Investigating Crime With Dna In The U.K. And The U.S., Duncan Carling
UC Law SF International Law Review
The United States and Great Britain are the world leaders in the use of DNA databases for criminal investigations, but the laws governing their use are evolving differently in each country. This note compares the American and British DNA database programs, and looks at two notable differences in practice: the collection of DNA samples from people who have been arrested but not convicted, and the technique of looking for an offender's relatives in the database. The note offers an explanation as to why the legislation is evolving differently, and argues that disparate cultural views on privacy are as much part …

Intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) are highly populated in eukaryotic proteomes and serve pivotal, mostly regulatory functions. Many IDRs appear to be functionally conserved and analysis of protein domains indicates high propensity of conserved regions predicted to be disordered. Nevertheless, it is difficult to assess conservation of IDRs in general due to their fast evolution and low sequence similarity. We propose three measures to evaluate conservation of IDRs: i) similarities of the disorder profiles using different prediction conditions; ii) the conservation of amino acids with propensities for promoting either disorder or order; and iii) the overlap between disordered/ordered regions. These measures …

Background: A previous study (Goh G.K.-M., Dunker A.K., Uversky V.N. (2008) Protein intrinsic disorder toolbox for comparative analysis of viral proteins. BMC Genomics. 9 (Suppl. 2), S4) revealed that HIV matrix protein p17 possesses especially high levels of predicted intrinsic disorder (PID). In this study, we analyzed the PID patterns in matrix proteins of viruses related and unrelated to HIV-1.
Results: Both SIVmac and HIV-1 p17 proteins were predicted by PONDR VLXT to be highly disordered with subtle differences containing 50% and 60% disordered residues, respectively. SIVmac is very closely related to HIV-2. A specific region that is predicted …

Research Brief: Time Of Day Effect On Performance At A User Interface, Prabir Mukhopadhyay
RIT Digital Archives
The paper investigates the effect of time of day at an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) interface. Two dependent variables, time taken and error rate were measured. 11 male students participated in the experiment which involved a set task at an ATM simulated on a PC in a controlled environment. Subjects were asked to perform the task at three different times of the day, 9.00am, 1.00 pm and 9.00 pm. The order of the sequence in which the subjects performed the task was randomized by Latin square design to minimize order effect. One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) on transaction time and …

Antipyretic Activity Of Peperomia Pellucida Leaves In Rabbit, Alam Khan, Moizur Rahman, Shariful Islam
Turkish Journal of Biology
Antipyretic effects of petroleum ether and ethyl acetate soluble fractions of ethanol extract of the leaves of Peperomia pellucida (Linn.) HBK (Fam. Piperaceae) were investigated. Intraperitoneal administration of boiled milk at a dose of 0.5 ml/kg body weight in albino rabbit leads to pyrexia. Intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of petroleum ether and ethyl acetate soluble fractions of ethanol extract of the leaves of P. pellucida at a dose of 80 mg/kg body weight significantly reduced the elevated body temperature of rabbit. This antipyretic effect has been compared with antipyretic effect of standard aspirin and the solvent used.
Customary Transnational Law: Attacking The Last Resort Of State Sovereignty, Till Müller
Customary Transnational Law: Attacking The Last Resort Of State Sovereignty, Till Müller
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
In the Westphalian State, Customary International Law (CIL) has traditionally been informed by high-level state action among close neighbors. However, it is no longer a foregone conclusion that CIL is resistant to the influences of greater globalization and transnational government and non-governmental action. As the interaction among and between national governments and non-governmental organizations increases in frequency, breadth, and physical distance, we are asked to reconsider the formation of modern CIL. Ultimately, the ever increasing importance of transnational cooperation, both in traditional governance and non-governmental action, necessarily informs modern CIL. The resultant body of law may appropriately be described as …

Changes In Forest Structure And Composition Associated With Unique Land Use Histories: Implications For Restoration, Cameron Edwards Naficy
Changes In Forest Structure And Composition Associated With Unique Land Use Histories: Implications For Restoration, Cameron Edwards Naficy
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Many contemporary semi-arid forests of western North America are denser and have a greater proportion of shade tolerant species relative to pre- Euro-American settlement. While many causes have been invoked to explain these changes, the active suppression of fire since the early 1900s has been the most widely studied and cited. However, widespread logging in western North American forests has often predated effective fire suppression and has affected a majority of semi-arid forests. The extent to which historical logging has contributed to uncharacteristically high densities and other changes in contemporary forests have never been adequately quantified. Therefore, true elucidation of …
A Demographic And Landscape Analysis For Common Loons In Northwest Montana, Christopher Allan Moanikeala Hammond
A Demographic And Landscape Analysis For Common Loons In Northwest Montana, Christopher Allan Moanikeala Hammond
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Understanding the relationship between a species’ important vital rates and how they respond to environmental factors is essential for developing appropriate conservation strategies. Historically, breeding populations of common loons existed across much of the northwestern United States, but that area of distribution within the lower 48 states has been significantly reduced. Montana still has the largest breeding population of common loons in the western continental United States, averaging 40-70 territorial pairs annually. Most research to date on loon population dynamics, habitat use, and response to disturbance was conducted in much larger populations of the Midwest and Northeast United States and …
Understanding Defense-Initiated Victim Outreach And Why It Is Essential In Defending A Capital Client, Mickell Branham, Richard Burr
Understanding Defense-Initiated Victim Outreach And Why It Is Essential In Defending A Capital Client, Mickell Branham, Richard Burr
Hofstra Law Review
This article appears in the Hofstra Law Review symposium issue on the Supplementary Guidelines for the Mitigation Function of Defense Teams in Death Penalty cases.
Effective capital defense lawyers must embrace, not suppress, human empathy. A defense team that demonstrates genuine compassion for the survivors - reaching out to get to know them, to listen to their stories, and to discern the interests the survivors hope to have met in the judicial proceedings - increases the possibility that the proceedings will end with compassion for their client. As a practical matter, this may well occur through some sort of agreed-upon …

Parents By The Numbers, Susan Frelich Appleton
Hofstra Law Review
This essay, an expanded version of the 2008 Siben Distinguished Professorship Lecture at Hofstra, explores the recent discourse - from case law, legal scholarship, and commentary - about whether children may have more than two legal parents. This discourse provides a lens for examining not only family law's current practices and trajectory but also family law's unfinished business, unspoken assumptions, and problematic inconsistencies.
Based on this examination, I largely ally myself with those who take a supportive approach to expanding parental numbers, but I include some significant points and elaborations missing from others' treatment of the topic. Specifically, I show …

Jennifer Hoffman identified as a woman. A classmate of mine in law school and a section-mate of mine during our first year, Jennifer wore no make-up, her short brown wavy hair parted to her right side, and an oxford shirt tucked into slacks each day. Jennifer always took her seat in the middle of the classroom in our large first year lectures. While members of my first year section, like many first year law students, shared the fear of being called on in class, many of us shared another fear, as well: the fear that Jennifer would be called on. …
