Assessment Of Water Quality Trends In The North Fork Of Kentucky River Basin: Focus On Pathogen Impairment, Kentucky Water Resources Research Institute
Assessment Of Water Quality Trends In The North Fork Of Kentucky River Basin: Focus On Pathogen Impairment, Kentucky Water Resources Research Institute
KWRRI Research Reports
This project consisted of analyzing existing water quality data for streams in the Upper Forks of Kentucky River Basin, with a particular focus on pathogen trends. According to the most recent 303(d) list of Kentucky waters, the majority of streams assessed in the Upper Forks of Kentucky River Basin are impaired for primary recreational contact as a result of pathogens. The state pathogen standard for primary contact recreation is expressed in a dual form which specifies that the 30-day geometric mean of fecal coliform counts not exceed 200 colonies per 100 mL (on a minimum of five samples) and not …

“There's Danger Here, Cherie!”: Liability For The Promotion And Marketing Of Drugs And Medical Devices For Off-Label Uses, Richard C. Ausness
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Physicians often prescribe prescription drugs and other medications for uses that are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration ("FDA"), and such "off label" prescription is widely accepted within the medical community as a legitimate form of treatment. However, the federal government discourages off-label prescription and use in various ways. For example, the FDA restricts the dissemination of information by drug companies about potential off-label therapies. In addition, federally funded health insurance programs such as Medicaid do not reimburse health care providers for off-label uses. Because drug companies make large profits from off-label prescriptions, they are often tempted to …

Application Of Artificial Neural Networks And Colored Petri Nets On Earthquake Resilient Water Distribution Systems, Nandini Kavanal Balakrishnan
Masters Theses
"Water distribution systems are important lifelines and a critical and complex infrastructure of a country. The performance of this system during unexpected rare events is important as it is one of the lifelines that people directly depend on and other factors indirectly impact the economy of a nation. In this thesis a couple of methods that can be used to predict damage and simulate the restoration process of a water distribution system are presented. Contributing to the effort of applying computational tools to infrastructure systems, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used to predict the rate of damage in the pipe …

One The Steps Of The Mosque: The Legal Rights Of Non-Marital Children In Egypt, Laura M. Thomason
One The Steps Of The Mosque: The Legal Rights Of Non-Marital Children In Egypt, Laura M. Thomason
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
This Note seeks to address the legal implications of being a non-marital child in Egypt and to parse out the legal discrimination from the social. It further explores Islam's influence on Egyptian law and whether the basic precepts of Islam are in part responsible for the legal treatment of nonmarital children in Egypt. Lastly, possible changes to the laws in Egypt are considered arising out of Egypt's ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the implementation of this convention, and how it may influence the rights of non-marital children.
Posthumour Children, Hegemonic Human Rights, And The Dilemma Of Reform - Conservations Across Cultres, Uche Ewerlukwa
Posthumour Children, Hegemonic Human Rights, And The Dilemma Of Reform - Conservations Across Cultres, Uche Ewerlukwa
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
This Article compares the unequal treatment of posthumous procreation in Africa and in the Western world within the contexts of jurisprudence and human rights discourse. Though customary law recognizes the legality of posthumous procreation in many parts of Africa, courts and international human rights advocates have condemned the practice as repugnant to public policy, public morality, and public health. The fact that comparable processes in the West have been ignored or even promoted suggests a double standard in human rights discourse, perhaps even an attempt to delegitimize non-Western customs while imposing Western values on non-Western societies. The Article urges cross-cultural …

Because We Say So: The Unfortunate Denial Of Rights To Transgender Minors Regarding Transitions, Amanda Kennedy
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
This Note explores the barriers that transgender youth face when attempting to explore transition through counseling or medical treatment. The Note first addresses barriers facing the transgender community generally, including cost of transition, social hurdles, and psychological factors. The Note then addresses the legal ramifications of three different situations: (1) when parents agree with their child's choice to explore transition; (2) when parents disagree with each other about their child's choice; and (3) when both parents oppose their child's transition. Finally, the Note addresses Constitutional and policy arguments in support of transgender youth.
Challenging Changing Legal Definitions Of Family In Same-Sex Domestic Violence, Shannon Little
Challenging Changing Legal Definitions Of Family In Same-Sex Domestic Violence, Shannon Little
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
Many state legislatures have amended domestic violence laws to cover non-marital relationships, at the same time removing references to gender so that same-sex relationships may receive protection. The de-gendered domestic violence law is not a perfect solution. Abuse in a same-sex relationship may involve different forms of physical and non-physical violence that traditional laws do not recognize. Gender-neutral laws also do nothing to address or remedy bias within the courts. Finally, some gender-neutral laws face challenges for violating state laws or constitutional amendments restricting marriage benefits to heterosexual relationships. This Note surveys the landscape of same-sex domestic violence protections, provides …

Medicating Children: The Enduring Controversy Over Adhd And Pediatric Stimulant Pharmacotherapy, Rick Mayes, Jennifer L. Erkulwater, Catherine Bagwell
Political Science Faculty Publications
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) holds the distinction of being both the most extensively studied pediatric mental disorder and one of the most controversial. This is partly due to the fact that it is also the most commonly diagnosed mental disorder among minors. On average, one in every ten to 15 children in the U.S. has been diagnosed with the disorder and one in every 20 to 25 uses a stimulant medication—often Ritalin, Adderall, or Concerta—as treatment. The biggest increase in youth diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed a stimulant drug occurred during the 1990s, when the prevalence of physician visits …
Downward Residential Mobility In Structural-Cultural Context: The Case Of Disadvantaged Black Mothers, Katrina Bell Mcdonald, Bedelia N. Richards
Downward Residential Mobility In Structural-Cultural Context: The Case Of Disadvantaged Black Mothers, Katrina Bell Mcdonald, Bedelia N. Richards
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Sorting out the various macro and micro causes of Black mothers’ downward residential mobility is extremely difficult, though past research has been fairly successful in identifying and explaining the mechanisms by which structural factors constrain Black residential change. The socio-historical context in which Black mothers operate, however, is largely ignored in these studies. We argue that past scholarship on Black women’s social history offers some helpful insights into the “residential desires and decision making” related to Black women’s social location. This paper pinpoints instances of downward residential mobility among a sample of disadvantaged Black mothers and works to elucidate both …
Status Maximization, Hypodescent Theory, Or Social Identity Theory? A Theoretical Approach To Understanding The Racial Identification Of Multiracial Adolescents, Matthew Oware
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
This chapter examines whether the racial identification of mixed-race adolescents can be understood through several theories: Status Maximization Theory, the rule of hypodescent, or social identity theory. Status Maximization theory posits that mixed-race adolescents will attempt to identify as the highest racial status group they possibly can. The rule of hypodescent or hypodescent theory, also known as the one-drop rule, is a legacy of the Plantation-era South and prescribes that mixed-race individuals identify as their lowest status racial identity. Social identity theory posits that the higher frequency or quality of contacts with parents or individuals in mixed-race adolescents’ peer networks …

Multiple Yy1 And Ctcf Binding Sites In Imprinting Control Regions, Joomyeong Kim
Multiple Yy1 And Ctcf Binding Sites In Imprinting Control Regions, Joomyeong Kim
Faculty Publications
Known imprinting control regions (ICRs) contain unusual tandem arrays of DNA-binding sites for transcription factors, including YY1 for the Peg3, Gnas and Xist/Tsix domains and CTCF for the H19/Igf2 domain. These multiple DNA-binding sites are known to be the only functionally shared and evolutionarily selected feature among these ICRs. However, it is not well understood why the imprinting control regions tend to maintain a high density of a particular transcription factor-binding site. We hypothesize that the multiplicity associated with the YY1 and CTCF binding sites may be designed for attracting and maintaining the relatively high levels of YY1 and CTCF …

Chromatin insulators/boundary elements share the ability to insulate a transgene from its chromosomal context by blocking promiscuous enhancer-promoter interactions and heterochromatin spreading. Several insulating factors target different DNA consensus sequences, defining distinct subfamilies of insulators. Whether each of these families and factors might possess unique cellular functions is of particular interest. Here, we combined chromatin immunoprecipitations and computational approaches to break down the binding signature of the Drosophila boundary element-associated factor (BEAF) subfamily. We identify a dual-core BEAF binding signature at 1,720 sites genome-wide, defined by five to six BEAF binding motifs bracketing 200 bp AT-rich nuclease-resistant spacers. Dual-cores are …
