Field Techniques For Estimating Water Fluxes Between Surface Water And Ground Water Techniques And Methods 4–D2 Jan 2008

Field Techniques For Estimating Water Fluxes Between Surface Water And Ground Water Techniques And Methods 4–D2

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

Edited by Donald O. Rosenberry and James W. LaBaugh Abstract: This report focuses on measuring the flow of water across the interface between surface water and ground water, rather than the hydrogeological or geochemical processes that occur at or near this interface. The methods, however, that use hydrogeological and geochemical evidence to quantify water fluxes are described herein. This material is presented as a guide for those who have to examine the interaction of surface water and ground water. The intent here is that both the overview of the many available methods and the in-depth presentation of specific methods will …

Williamson County Regional Habitat Conservation Plan, Environmental Consultants Swca, Smith, Robertson, Elliot, Glen, Klein & Bell, L.L.P., Prime Strategies Inc.

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

Williamson County, Texas, contains habitat occupied by three karst invertebrates and two bird species that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended. The County also contains habitat for other rare species, including at least four species of salamanders and 19 species of karst invertebrates that may be in need of conservation efforts to preclude the need for listing in the future. The presence of endangered species habitat has significantly affected both public and private development activities within Williamson County. As the County continues to grow, conflicts with …

Hydrogeological Characterization Of Baseflow To Jacob’S Well Spring, Hays County, Texas, Sarah Cain Davidson Jan 2008

Hydrogeological Characterization Of Baseflow To Jacob’S Well Spring, Hays County, Texas, Sarah Cain Davidson

KIP Articles

Jacob’s Well is a karst spring that discharges from the Trinity aquifer in central Texas. Ongoing development and increased groundwater pumping in the area around the spring are thought to be impacting the volume of discharge at the spring—however, the source of spring discharge is poorly understood. The goals of this study are to characterize the chemistry of springflow and nearby surface waters and groundwaters and to identify the source or sources of water that contribute flow to the spring under low flow conditions. The spring is located in the Middle Trinity aquifer within the Lower Cretaceous Trinity Group in …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

This study examined the efficacy of two different resistance training programs in enhancing bone modeling and bone mineral density (BMD) in maturating rats. One exercise mode involved lifting a lighter weight with more repetitions (LI), while the other regimen involved lifting a heavier weight with fewer repetitions (HI) where the total volume of work between exercise programs was equivalent by design. Twenty-three male rats were randomly divided into control (Con, n = 8), LI (n = 7), and HI (n = 8) groups. The LI and HI groups were conditioned to climb a vertical ladder with weights appended to their …

Communication Within The Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, Laura L. Ellingson Jan 2008

Communication Within The Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, Laura L. Ellingson

Communication

The comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) forms a cornerstone of geriatric care; the process is designed to assess the complex interaction of biological , psychological, and social challenges often faced by elder patients (e .g ., Extermann, 2003). Using a narrative case study of a patient undergoing a CGA by members of an interdisciplinary geriatric oncology team. I explore some of the communication challenges and opportunities for healthcare providers caring for geriatric patients. My goal in offering readers narratives of geriatric patient-healthcare provider communication-rather than only analysis of those interactions - is to complement typical analysis of research findings with an …

When (Post)Coloniality Meets Transnationalism, Hsin-I Cheng Jan 2008

When (Post)Coloniality Meets Transnationalism, Hsin-I Cheng

Communication

Cultural differences are produced and maintained in numerous relations as spaces and places are. Spaces such as nation-states are made and organized hierarchically through historical agency within the parameter of unbalanced power interactions. They are imagined, contested, and enforced through processes in which multiple sociopolitical structures are implicated. In the de-territorialized age, the ways in which people "confound or reinforce the established spatial orders either through physical movement or through their own conceptual and political acts of re-imagination" are central for any research on people's dynamic acts of cultivating, identifying, and communicating processes (Gupta and Ferguson 17). This is especially …

The Role Of The Epikarst In Karst And Cave Hydrogeology: A Review, Paul W. Willimas Jan 2008

The Role Of The Epikarst In Karst And Cave Hydrogeology: A Review, Paul W. Willimas

KIP Articles

The epikarst (also known as the subcutaneous zone) comprises highly weathered carbonate bedrock immediately beneath the surface or beneath the soil (when present) or exposed at the surface. Porosity and permeability are higher near the surface than at depth, consequently after recharge percolating rainwater is detained near the base of the epikarst, the detention ponding producing an epikarstic aquifer. Such an aquifer is found only where the uppermost part of the vadose zone is very weathered compared to the bedrock at depth. Sometimes this contrast in porosity and permeability does not occur either because the epikarst has been scraped off …

Users As Innovators: Implications For Patent Doctrine, Katherine J. Strandburg Jan 2008

Users As Innovators: Implications For Patent Doctrine, Katherine J. Strandburg

Faculty Articles

User innovators range from commercial firms, which invent new production methods in expectation of competitive advantage, to individual hobbyists motivated entirely by their enjoyment of the inventive process. In this Article, I consider the implications for patent doctrine of the fact that many user innovators derive sufficient benefit simply from developing and using their inventions to motivate them to invest the effort necessary to invent them. Moreover, user innovators often benefit from 'freely revealing' their innovations to others. Trade secrecy and patenting are not central to motivating this inventive activity. This picture of user innovation contrasts sharply with the seller …

Nonobviousness: A Comment On Three Learned Papers, Rochelle C. Dreyfuss Jan 2008

Nonobviousness: A Comment On Three Learned Papers, Rochelle C. Dreyfuss

Faculty Articles

This Article, a comment on the contributions of John Duffy, Rebecca Eisenberg, and Gregory Mandel, addresses three areas where improvements could be made in the law on nonobviousness. First, the quantum of inventiveness required for patentability should reflect the capabilities of the ordinary artisan. Second, the asymmetry in the error rate of nonobviousness determinations should be taken into account in setting the standard of nonobviousness. Third, the concept of nonobviousness—or, better, inventive step—should be operationalized by considering the opportunities, risks, and nonpatent incentives the inventor faced at the time of the innovation.

The Increasing Number Of Clinical Items Addressed During The Time Of Adult Primary Care Visits, Elmer D. Abbo, Qi Zhang, Martin Zelder, Elbert S. Huang

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Primary care physicians report that there is insufficient time to meet patients' needs during clinical visits, but visit time has increased over the past decade.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the number of clinical items addressed during the primary care visit has increased, and if so, whether this has been associated with changes in visit length and the pace of clinical work.

DESIGN: Analysis of non-hospital-based adult primary care visits from 1997 to 2005, as reported in the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey.

PARTICIPANTS: A total of 46,431 adult primary care visits.

MEASUREMENTS: We assessed changes over time for …
