Flaws And Idiosyncrasies In Mathematicians: Food For The Classroom, Ted Eisenberg

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper raises an ethical question: should aspects of a mathematician’s personality, political beliefs, physical handicaps, and the ironies surrounding their life be mentioned parenthetically or otherwise in our lessons? What about the political and social norms of the times in the countries in which they lived? There are no hard and fast guidelines on this other than to use good taste; but what is in good taste to one is often in bad taste to another. At the very least this paper presents tidbits of information and innuendo about mathematicians the reader might not know. But hopefully this paper …

This paper addresses the synergistic interaction between HIV and mycobacterium tuberculosis using a deterministic model, which incorporates many of the essential biological and epidemiological features of the two diseases. In the absence of TB infection, the model (IIIV-only model) is shown to have a globally asymptotically stable, disease-free equilibrium whenever the associated reproduction number is less than unity and has a unique endemic equilibrium whenever this number exceeds unity. On the other hand, the model with TB alone (TB-only model) undergoes the phenomenon of backward bifurcation, where the stable disease-free equilibrium co-exists with a stable endemic equilibrium when the associated …

Combating The Color-Coded Confinement Of Kids: An Equal Protection Remedy, Perry L. Moriearty Jan 2008

Combating The Color-Coded Confinement Of Kids: An Equal Protection Remedy, Perry L. Moriearty

Articles

This Article considers the viability of a constitutional challenge to the disproportionate confinement of juveniles of color – a phenomenon known as “disproportionate minority contact” or “DMC.” Specifically, I ask whether, in the wake of McCleskey v. Kemp and its progeny, it is possible bring an Equal Protection claim based on statistical evidence that juveniles of color are significantly more likely to be detained by juvenile court judges than similarly-situated white youth. I argue that the nature of the juvenile detention decision places it squarely within the contours of the types of administrative decisions for which the Supreme Court has …

Negative Dimensions Of Identity: A Research Agenda For Law And Public Policy, Avner Ben-Ner, Claire Hill Jan 2008

Negative Dimensions Of Identity: A Research Agenda For Law And Public Policy, Avner Ben-Ner, Claire Hill

Articles

Legal scholarship has long concerned itself with race, gender, and other core identities. Economics, and law and economics, is now turning its attention to other dimensions of identity. What is identity? Identity is "a person's sense of self."' Identity has genetic, cultural and neural bases grounded in an evolutionary process.' Identity helps individuals make sense of themselves and provides a feeling of grounding or belonging. There are many potential identity dimensions, including gender, facial features, and height, as well as religion, ethnicity, social-group affiliation, sports-team loyalty, family, profession, artistic preferences, culinary preferences, and place of origin. The significance of different …

Melvil Dewey And The Dewey Decimal Classification System, Gina Pauley Jan 2008

Melvil Dewey And The Dewey Decimal Classification System, Gina Pauley

Honors Capstones

Melvil Dewey had a great influence on the way libraries classify books. Much research and planning was involved with his Dewey Decimal Classification System. Most school libraries today still use his classification system. Therefore, students need to gain an understanding of this system in their school careers. Research was conducted on Melvil Dewey, in order to gain more understanding about his life, his classification system, his influences, and his ideas, which are still being used in libraries today. After learning about Melvil Dewey's life and his classification system, it will be easier to teach the concepts to the students. The …

Quality Improvement In Higher Education Through Normalization Of Student Feedback Data Using Evolutionary Algorithm, S. Vishnupriyan, L. Govindarajan, G. Prabhakaran, K. P. Ramachandran

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

Student Feedback is a vital information that helps not only to evaluate the existing academic practices but also to rectify the discrepancies if any, enabling continuous quality improvement. Often the educational institutions make decisions on the teaching and delivery strategies and requirements of the students based on the students’ Feedback. Due to various factors like the composition of the class in terms of student background, personal relationship with the teacher and other factors, the Feedback generally remains so scattered that at times it may not be possible to arrive at a conclusion based on the feedback. Any decision, based on …

Psychological Stress And Immune Function, Allison Rubin Jan 2008

Psychological Stress And Immune Function, Allison Rubin

Quill & Scope

Dr. Henry Maudsley said, "The sorrow which has no vent in tears may make other organs weep." The medical community has always acknowledged that psychological stress can affect physical wellbeing, even though the mechanism was not always known. Now we know that this phenomenon is mediated by the body’s response to external stress and a person who does not cope with stress appropriately can experience immunosuppression. This phenomenon is especially important for the already immunosuppressed HIV+ population because life stresses specific to HIV+ people may contribute to disease progression. Furthermore, improving life stress in this population is linked with increased …

Landscape Aesthetics, Water, And Settler Colonialism In The Okanagan Valley Of British Columbia, John R. Wagner Jan 2008

Landscape Aesthetics, Water, And Settler Colonialism In The Okanagan Valley Of British Columbia, John R. Wagner

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Historic and contemporary patterns of settler colonialism and agricultural development in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia are described, emphasizing the ways in which settler culture has led to the production of a landscape aesthetic that reproduces colonization as an iterative cultural practice. I explore the ways in which this particular landscape aesthetic is dependent on the economic and symbolic meanings of water in Okanagan settlement history. The images of the Okanagan that were used to attract settlers to the valley a century ago emphasized the lush, oasis-like qualities of orchards and lakes set among a dramatic, arid and mountainous …

Embracing The Past: Conflict, Conservation, And Organization In Ecuador’S Upper Amazon, John S. Luque Jan 2008

Embracing The Past: Conflict, Conservation, And Organization In Ecuador’S Upper Amazon, John S. Luque

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This study explores the contested nature of relationships between indigenous communities and their representative organizations, government agencies, and international conservation organizations in conservation projects, and how the move from the Yellowstone model of parks conservation to the community participation model may lead to conflicts between competing groups. In Napo-Galeras—a transition zone between the foothills of the Andes and the Ecuadorian Oriente rainforest—land tenure arrangements led to encroachments on protected areas by in-migrating Napo Runa and mestizo colonists. The study methodology employed participant observation, semi-structured ethnographic interviews with key stakeholders, and archival research in non-governmental organizations. This study concludes that conservation …

Wipo-Wto Relations And The Future Of Global Intellectual Property Norms, Ruth Okediji Jan 2008

Wipo-Wto Relations And The Future Of Global Intellectual Property Norms, Ruth Okediji

Articles

The intense scholarly debate about the effects of harmonized global intellectual property (IP) rules under the TRIPS Agreement has yet to consider what role an appropriate organizational framework should play in facilitating development of IP norms to address new global challenges. The prevailing assumption has been that the norm-setting role of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will remain unchanged despite the primacy of the TRIPS Agreement and the explicit mandate of the WTO for global IP regulation. Indeed, with respect to the supply of public goods, only the WTO - not WIPO - has the formal legal mandate to …

The Builders Versus The Birds : Wetlands, People, And Public Policy In The United States, Florida And Hillsborough County, Allyson R. Bennett Jan 2008

The Builders Versus The Birds : Wetlands, People, And Public Policy In The United States, Florida And Hillsborough County, Allyson R. Bennett

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

This thesis is an interdisciplinary analysis of humans' relationship to the natural environment, specifically how wetlands are reflected in our legislative decisions. Our perceptions of wetlands and our relationship to the environment are influenced by our locality, history, and inter-generational relationships. These perceptions shape decision-making within a community. Our relationship to the natural environment and the way we interact with it can be explained through psychological and geographical theories. Historical trends reveal our consistently negative perspectives of wetlands in the United States and a rapid decline in wetlands acreage. At the federal, state, and local level, Americans have attempted to …

Strong Genetic Differentiation Among Neighboring Populations Of A Locally Endemic Primrose, L. Bjerregaard, Paul G. Wolf Jan 2008

Strong Genetic Differentiation Among Neighboring Populations Of A Locally Endemic Primrose, L. Bjerregaard, Paul G. Wolf

Biology Faculty Publications

Maguire primrose is a locally endemic plant of northern Utah, USA, with a total known range of less than 20 km2. A previous study found evidence for strong differentiation among local populations at 4 allozyme loci. Here we reexamined populations using 165 AFLP loci and found further evidence of unusually strong genetic structure. We also found an apparently fixed nucleotide difference between populations for a noncoding region of chloroplast DNA, mirroring the patterns seen for AFLP loci. Furthermore, we tested the hypothesis that the current population structure is the result of breeding barriers between plants from different populations. We made …

Optimizing Qpcr For The Quantification Of Periodontal Pathogens In A Complex Plaque Biofilm, Sreenatha S. Kirakodu, M. Govindaswami, Michael John Novak, Jeffrey L. Ebersole, Karen F. Novak

Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications

Quantitative PCR (qPCR) has recently been used to quantify microorganisms in complex communities, including dental plaque biofilms. However, there is variability in the qPCR protocols being used. This study was designed to evaluate the validity of two of these variables with the intent of developing a more standardized qPCR protocol. The two variables evaluated were (1) the use of DNA content versus actual cell counts to estimate bacterial numbers in mixed plaque samples and (2) the effectiveness of three different universal primers versus species specific primers in amplifying specific target pathogens in these samples. Results lead to the development of …

Androgenesis In Anther Culture Of Lithuanian Spring Barley (Hordeum Vulgare L.) And Potato (Solanum Tuberosum L.) Cultivars, Rita Asakaviciute

Turkish Journal of Biology

An anther culture method was used for the production of doubled haploids (DHs) in Lithuanian barley and potato cultivars that were directly regenerated from embryoids (Caredda´s method) were applied to determine androgenic potential according to the green regenerant yield and other morphogenetic factors. Green DH regenerants were obtained in 3 Lithuanian spring barley cultivars (´Aidas´, ´Alsa´, and ´Auksiniai´) out of 10 studied. The highest rate of embryoid formation was determined in cv. ´Auksiniai 3´, representing 580.0 embryoids per 100 responding anthers. The potato cultivar ´Nida´ was superior in terms of the rate of responding anthers (17.4%). The highest rate of …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Using a combination of bacterial and phage-targeted metagenomics, we analyzed two geographically remote sludge bioreactors enriched in a single bacterial species Candidatus Accumulibacter phosphatis (CAP). We inferred unrestricted global movement of this species and identified aquatic ecosystems as the primary environmental reservoirs facilitating dispersal. Highly related and geographically remote CAP strains differed principally in genomic regions encoding phage defense mechanisms. We found that CAP populations were high density, clonal, and nonrecombining, providing natural targets for “kill-the-winner” phage predation. Community expression analysis demonstrated that phages were consistently active in the bioreactor community. Genomic signatures linking CAP to past phage exposures were …
