Texture Evolution In Metal Nitride (Aluminum Nitride, Titanium Nitride, Hafnium Nitride) Thin Films Prepared By Off-Normal Incidence Reactive Magnetron Sputtering, Derya Deniz
Doctoral Dissertations
We studied the development of crystallographic texture in aluminum nitride (AlN), titanium nitride (TiN) and hafnium nitride (HfN) films deposited by off-normal incidence reactive magnetron sputtering at room temperature in N2/Ar mixtures. Texture measurements were performed by x-ray pole figure analysis of the (0002) (AlN), (111) and (200) (TiN and HfN) diffraction peaks. We report a strong dependence of fiber texture tilt angle on the angle of deposition and gas composition in AlN. We present a Monte Carlo simulation model to describe the phenomenon of sudden c-axis (0002) AIN tilt. The model is based on the competition among grains with …
Evaluation Of Reactive Cap Sorbents For In-Situ Remediation Of Contaminated Sediments, Bhawana Sharma
Evaluation Of Reactive Cap Sorbents For In-Situ Remediation Of Contaminated Sediments, Bhawana Sharma
Doctoral Dissertations
Contaminated sediments can be treated using in-situ treatment methods that aim to either degrade or sequester contaminants, reducing their bioavailability. The main purpose of this research was to develop and evaluate a reactive capping mat that can be used for in-situ remediation of contaminated sediments. This study investigated the interferences caused by humic acid on the adsorption of co-planar and non-co-planar polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) including 2-chlorobiphenyl, 2, 2', 5, 5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl, 3, 3', 4, 4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl, 2, 2', 4, 4', 5, 5'-hexachlorobiphenyl and 3, 3', 4, 4', 5, 5'-hexachlorobiphenyl and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) including naphthalene, phenanthrene and pyrene on two types …

Synthesis Of Unsymmetrical Pendant-Armed And Phosphonic Acid-Pendant-Armed Cross-Bridged Tetraazamacrocycles, Dannon Jason Stigers
Synthesis Of Unsymmetrical Pendant-Armed And Phosphonic Acid-Pendant-Armed Cross-Bridged Tetraazamacrocycles, Dannon Jason Stigers
Doctoral Dissertations
The synthesis of a variety of cross-bridged tetraazamacrocycles bearing phosphonate pendant arms and their corresponding phosphonic acid derivatives as well as their Cu(II) complexes are presented. The half-life of decomplexation of Cu(II)·51 in 5M HCl at 90°C was found to be 3.8 hours. Ligand 51 showed faster complexation kinetics relative to known cross-bridged tetraazamacrocycles bearing ionizable pendant arms. The biodistribution of 64Cu(II)·51 was studied in male rats and indicated an improved blood and liver clearance and higher bone retention of 64Cu(II)·51 relative to 64Cu(II)·10.*.
The formation of a single pendant-armed cross-bridged cyclam is presented through an unusual single alkylation of …
Sources And Sinks Of Selected Trace Gases In The Tropospheric Boundary Layer Of The Eastern United States, Marguerite L. White
Sources And Sinks Of Selected Trace Gases In The Tropospheric Boundary Layer Of The Eastern United States, Marguerite L. White
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation describes three major research projects with the common goal of characterizing sources and sinks of trace gases of strong relevance to regional air quality and global climate issues. In the first study, volatile organic compound (VOC) measurements collected at a marine and continental site in northern New England were compared and examined for evidence of regional VOC sources. Biogenic VOCs, including isoprene, monoterpenes, and oxygenated VOCs, were significant components of the total reactivity at both locations. However, very different VOC distributions were observed for each site. The impact of local anthropogenic hydrocarbon sources such as liquefied petroleum gas …
Conserving Dolphins And Fishermen: Combining Science And Local Knowledge To Reduce Cetacean Bycatch, Erika A. Zollett
Conserving Dolphins And Fishermen: Combining Science And Local Knowledge To Reduce Cetacean Bycatch, Erika A. Zollett
Doctoral Dissertations
Bycatch is the portion of catch that is neither targeted nor retained by fishermen. It threatens the survival of many marine mammal populations globally, and it occurs in nearly every fishing gear type. Despite its widespread occurrence, observations of bycatch are rare, and scientific data on marine mammal bycatch are limited. Difficulties result in developing models that accurately depict the interactions. This study focuses on developing methodology to combine disparate data sources, specifically data from fishery observer programs and interviews of fishermen, to better understand these interactions and to identify effective mitigation measures. As a case study, this research investigates …
The Fallacy Of Endless Growth: Exposing Capitalism's Insustainability, William S. Strauss
The Fallacy Of Endless Growth: Exposing Capitalism's Insustainability, William S. Strauss
Doctoral Dissertations
What if we were to have 100 years of no growth? What if conditions were such that there is no future scenario under which growth will ever occur again? We might characterize this as impossible, as a vision that violates the outcome that we as innovative people must realize.
In the document that follows I will show you our world as it must be sometime in the future. I will describe a world in which the real growth of the world economy is zero and remains zero. I will tell a story of a world that is so different from …

Computational Models Of Facial Attractiveness Judgments, P Matthew Bronstad, Judith H. Langlois, Richard Russell
Computational Models Of Facial Attractiveness Judgments, P Matthew Bronstad, Judith H. Langlois, Richard Russell
Psychology Faculty Publications
We designed two computational models to replicate human facial attractiveness ratings. The primary model used partial least squares (PLS) to identify image factors associated with facial attractiveness from facial images and attractiveness ratings of those images. For comparison we also made a model similar to previous models of facial attractiveness, in that it used manually derived measurements between features as inputs, though we took the additional step of dimensionality reduction via principal component analysis (PCA) and weighting of PCA dimensions via a perceptron. Strikingly, both models produced estimates of facial attractiveness that were indistinguishable from human ratings. Because PLS extracts …

Statute Of Anne-Imals: Should Copyright Protect Sentient Non-Human Creators?, Dane E. Johnson
Animal Law Review
This article explores questions of whether copyright protection can and should extend to works created by captive animals such as gorillas, chimpanzees, and elephants. Commentators have considered similar questions in the artificial intelligence context and generally rejected the notion that computers can create works sufficiently free of human involvement to merit copyright protection. As our understanding of animal intelligence increases, however, the case for reconsideration of copyright’s constitutional and statutory boundaries becomes stronger. This article examines those boundaries and offers a proposal for granting limited copyrights to animals under a theory along the lines of David Favre’s equitable self-ownership concept.
The Japanese Dolphin Hunts: In Quest Of International Legal Protection For Small Cetaceans, Rachelle Adam
The Japanese Dolphin Hunts: In Quest Of International Legal Protection For Small Cetaceans, Rachelle Adam
Animal Law Review
This article sets out to explore the international legal status of those dolphins targeted by the Japanese drive hunts. It is estimated that over two thousand five hundred small cetaceans—dolphins, porpoises and small whales—will be killed as a result, out of a total of over twenty thousand killed annually in Japan by direct catch. It is argued that since we have literally pushed them to the brink of extinction, we have an ethical duty towards dolphins, to stop the cruelty perpetrated against them by man and to ensure the survival of their species. And our ethical duty towards them should …
See Spot Eat, See Spot Die: The Pet Food Recall Of 2007, Kate Paulman
See Spot Eat, See Spot Die: The Pet Food Recall Of 2007, Kate Paulman
Animal Law Review
When dogs and cats across the country fell inexplicably ill in March of 2007, their human companions became sick with worry. Veterinarians eventually determined contaminated pet food was the source of these illnesses. Melamine, an industrial chemical used in cookware, furniture, and industrial fertilizers, contaminated wheat gluten manufactured in China and utilized in many pet food brands in the United States and Canada. This contamination led to a recall of more than 200 brands of pet food - the largest in American history. This comment explores the reasons behind the contamination and the ensuing recall. The author identifies inadequate domestic …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is a widely distributed and serious economic pest to corn production in the U.S. Genetic variability of O. nubilalis was studied in 18 sub-populations in the upper Midwestern United States using amplified fragment length polymorphism. The relatively low GST values indicate that more variation exists within populations than between populations. High gene flow (Nm) values were indicated across the entire O. nubilalis population; the lowest degree of gene flow was in the northern samples (Nm = 1.96) and the highest degree of gene flow was in the southern samples (Nm = …

The Trauma Of Stalinism Narrated In Varlam T. Shalamov's Kolymskie Rasskazy : Missiological Implications For Contemporary Russia, Yuri N. Drumi
Dissertations
Stalinism and the punitive system of the Gulag left an indelible stamp on the entire social matrix of Russia. Because of the multidimensional and multigenerational nature of the trauma of Stalinism, Russian society retains the label of a traumatized culture. This dissertation explores the significance of this phenomenon for contemporary Christian mission in Russia.
The narratives of Varlam T. Shalamov's Kolymskie rasskazy provided an empirical (based on sensory evidence) inquiry into the reality of enormous sufferings experienced by the inmates of the Kolyma Gulag. Holy Scripture, on the other hand, provided the theological (faith-based) inquiry into the causes and implications …
