Novel Implications Of The Kallikrein-Kinin System In Diabetic Vasculopathy: A Proposed Role Of Prekallikrein In The Causation And Development Of Vascular Pathology In Diabetics, Rany Abdallah Jan 2008

Novel Implications Of The Kallikrein-Kinin System In Diabetic Vasculopathy: A Proposed Role Of Prekallikrein In The Causation And Development Of Vascular Pathology In Diabetics, Rany Abdallah

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Despite the clear association between diabetes and atherosclerotic vascular disease, the factors and mechanisms underlying the association between the two diseases are not well understood. Our preliminary studies, based on data obtained from the national Diabetes Control and Complication Trial/Epidemiology of Diabetes and Complications (DCCT/EDIC) cohort of type 1 diabetes subjects, suggest that diabetic atherosclerosis is linked to defects in the Kallikrein-Kinin System (KKS). Our research also found that apoliporotein E (ApoE) knockout mice, which have marked increase in total plasma cholesterol levels and a higher number of atherosclerotic lesions compared to wild type mice, have markedly higher plasma prekallikrein …

Characterization Of Calpain 10 Activity, Expression, And Inhibition, Christopher Joseph Giguere Jan 2008

Characterization Of Calpain 10 Activity, Expression, And Inhibition, Christopher Joseph Giguere

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Calpains are a family of Ca^2+-activated, non-lysosomal, cysteine proteases that have been implicated in a variety of physiological and pathological processes. Currently, the family consists of 14 members, of which eight are typical (calpains 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 11, 12, and 14) and six are atypical (calpains 5, 6, 7, 10, 13, 15), based on the presence or absence of the Ca^2+-binding domain (domain IV), respectively. The atypical calpain have recently gained attention due to studies that have linked human diseases to mutations in specific calpain genes (Type 2 diabetes linked to calpain 10 and Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy …

An Assessment Of Noninvasive Measurements Of Arterial Compliance, Andrea D. Boan Jan 2008

An Assessment Of Noninvasive Measurements Of Arterial Compliance, Andrea D. Boan

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Arterial stiffness is considered both a risk factor and indicator of cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations of cardiovascular risk indicators of arterial compliance among 226 black and white individuals enrolled in an outpatient clinical setting. Data were collected by survey and examination with a computerized arterial pulse waveform analyzer. Arterial stiffness was estimated by indirect estimates of small artery and large artery compliance, as well as pulse pressure. After adjustments for age, race, and gender, logistic regression identified hypertension, end organ damage, and overweight as the strongest predictors for the three arterial stiffness …

Can Distance And Classroom Learning Be Increased?, Richard Hake Jan 2008

Can Distance And Classroom Learning Be Increased?, Richard Hake

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Professor Scott Overmyer of Baker College, in a discussion list post, raised four points bearing on a question of interest to those involved in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL): Can Distance and Classroom Learning Be Increased? My answer: “YES” - judging from the fact that pre/post testing in courses in Newtonian mechanics has demonstrated an approximately two-standard-deviation superiority in average normalized gains for classroom “interactive engagement” methods over “traditional” classroom methods. Similarly, pre/post testing might demonstrate a substantive superiority over traditional classroom teaching for both classroom and distance education that recognize recent advances in cognitive science and …

Display Of An Inedible Prop As A Signal Of Aggression? Adaptive Significance Of Leaf-Display By The Turquoise-Browed Motmot, Eumomota Superciliosa, Troy G. Murphy Jan 2008

Display Of An Inedible Prop As A Signal Of Aggression? Adaptive Significance Of Leaf-Display By The Turquoise-Browed Motmot, Eumomota Superciliosa, Troy G. Murphy

Biology Faculty Research

The incorporation of an inedible object (prop) into a behavioral display is rare among birds. Only four avian taxa have been reported to display with a prop, and in all studied species, prop use has been found to play a role in mate acquisition. However, little is known about the context and adaptive significance of prop use by the motmots. Both male and female motmots perform a leaf-display, whereby a leaf is held horizontally in the tip of the bill for an extended period. I collected observational data on leaf-display by the turquoise-browed motmots (Eumomota superciliosa) to investigate …

Predicting Aged Beef Tenderness With A Hyperspectral Imaging System, Lauren M. Grimes, Govindarajan Konda Naganathan, Jeyamkondan Subbiah, Chris R. Calkins

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A hyperspectral imaging apparatus was developed to predict, at 2-day postmortem, the 14 day aged tenderness of beef. USDA Choice and Select grade longissimus steaks (n = 314) from between the 12th and 13th ribs were scanned at 2 days postmortem, vacuum packaged, aged to 14 days, and frozen. For tenderness determination, steaks were thawed overnight, scanned, cooked in an impingement oven, and slice shear force values were obtained. The model predicted three tenderness categories (tender, intermediate, tough) with 77.1% accuracy, and two tenderness categories (acceptable, tough) with 93.7% accuracy. This hyperspectral imaging system was effective in predicting 14-day aged …

Statistics Used In The Nebraska Beef Report And Their Purpose Jan 2008

Statistics Used In The Nebraska Beef Report And Their Purpose

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

The purpose of beef cattle and beef product research at UNL is to provide reference information that represents the various populations (cows, calves, heifers, feeders, carcasses, retail products, etc.) of beef production. Obviously, the researcher cannot apply treatments to every member of a population; therefore, he or she must sample the population. The use of statistics allows the researcher and readers of the Nebraska Beef Report the opportunity to evaluate separation of random (chance) occurrences and real biological effects of a treatment. Following is a brief description of the major statistics used in the beef report. For a more detailed …

Effect Of Three Orobanche Spp. Extracts On Some Local Phytopathogens, Agrobacterium And Erwinia, Ismail M. Saadoun, Khalid M. Hameed, Fouad Al-Momani, Qotaiba Ababneh

Turkish Journal of Biology

Tissues of the spikes of Orobanche spp. contain phenols and mannitol pathways, and it seems that it is very resistant, or may be immune, to bacterial infection. Therefore extracts of 3 Orobanche species, O. cernua, O. crenata, and O. egyptiaca, were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against local isolates of crown gall (Agrobacterium) and soft rot (Erwinia) phytopathogens. Extract of O. cernua showed the highest activity against both pathogens with clear inhibition zones of 8-24 mm and 12-16 mm in diameters, respectively. When the inhibitory action of 100 mg/ml concentration of the 3 Orobanche species extract on local isolates of …

Early Attachment Stress, Attentional Control Dysfunction And Problems With Self-Regulation, Joshua David Bernstein Jan 2008

Early Attachment Stress, Attentional Control Dysfunction And Problems With Self-Regulation, Joshua David Bernstein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Development of the self-regulatory elements of executive control is one of the most critical and significant developmental achievements of early childhood. Executive control and self-regulation are constructs that lie at the nexus of developmental, neuropsychological, and clinical investigations. Effortful Control (EC) is a construct representing a hybridization of these separate but intertwined notions. It describes the self regulatory aspects of the executive control system. The construct is of special interest and use, because, despite the traditional practice of conceptualizing cognitive and emotional processes independently of one another, the construct of EC places emotional, cognitive, and behavioral self-regulatory capacities together. EC …

Interactions Of The Fragile X Protein Family With The G Quadruplex Forming Rna Targets, Lakshmi Menon Jan 2008

Interactions Of The Fragile X Protein Family With The G Quadruplex Forming Rna Targets, Lakshmi Menon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The absence of fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) causes Fragile X Syndrome, the most common form of inherited mental retardation. FMRP, an RNA binding protein and, part of large ribonucleoprotein complexes, is proposed to participate in the transport, localization and translation regulation of specific target mRNAs. How the absence of this protein leads to mental retardation is not clearly understood. FMRP has been shown to use its Arginine-Glycine-Glycine (RGG) box to bind with high affinity to target RNA sequences containing G quadruplex structures. Two of the proposed mRNA targets of FMRP are the human semaphorin 3F (S3F) mRNA and …

Barriers To Parental Involvement In The Seneca Valley School District, Jeffrey Fuller Jan 2008

Barriers To Parental Involvement In The Seneca Valley School District, Jeffrey Fuller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The involvement of parents in the educational programs of their children has been shown to have a significant impact on both student achievement and the family. While both educators and parents are accountable for the development of the partnership between the home and the school, teachers and school administrators have the greatest responsibility for opening the lines of communication and making schools and classrooms welcoming. By identifying and overcoming those factors that parents perceive to be barriers to their involvement in their child's educational program, educators will have a significant positive impact on the future success of the children in …

Human Performance Analysis Of Controller -Pilot Data Link Communications, Randal J. Demik

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The researcher examined how the introduction and application of Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) technology will affect human performance in the single-pilot general aviation work environment. Unlike conventional voice-based air traffic control (ATC) communications technology, the CPDLC system will allow pilots and controllers to exchange text-based messages via specifically designated data links. Instrument-rated pilots ( N = 30) were tested on both a series of CPDLC text command tasks and a series of conventional voice command tasks in a simulated flight environment. Measures of performance were response time and number of errors made in pilot recall/execution across the command condition …

The Charter And Protection Against Wrongful Conviction: Good, Bad Or Irrelevant?, Christopher Sherrin Jan 2008

The Charter And Protection Against Wrongful Conviction: Good, Bad Or Irrelevant?, Christopher Sherrin

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

This paper asks whether the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, as interpreted over the past 25 years, has made a positive contribution to the protection afforded in Canadian law against wrongful conviction. The paper argues that while the Charter has made a positive contribution in a couple of areas, its overall impact is not clear. It is, in fact, arguable that the Charter has made things worse for the innocent. The paper proceeds in four parts. First, the paper describes the two areas where the Charter has made a positive contribution, namely, disclosure and reverse onuses and presumptions. The …

Optimizing Dynamic Logic Realizations For Partial Reconfiguration Of Field Programmable Gate Arrays, Matthew Parris Jan 2008

Optimizing Dynamic Logic Realizations For Partial Reconfiguration Of Field Programmable Gate Arrays, Matthew Parris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many digital logic applications can take advantage of the reconfiguration capability of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to dynamically patch design flaws, recover from faults, or time-multiplex between functions. Partial reconfiguration is the process by which a user modifies one or more modules residing on the FPGA device independently of the others. Partial Reconfiguration reduces the granularity of reconfiguration to be a set of columns or rectangular region of the device. Decreasing the granularity of reconfiguration results in reduced configuration filesizes and, thus, reduced configuration times. When compared to one bitstream of a non-partial reconfiguration implementation, smaller modules resulting in …

Dynamic Task Allocation In Mobile Robot Systems Using Utility Funtions, Scott Vander Weide Jan 2008

Dynamic Task Allocation In Mobile Robot Systems Using Utility Funtions, Scott Vander Weide

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We define a novel algorithm based on utility functions for dynamically allocating tasks to mobile robots in a multi-robot system. The algorithm attempts to maximize the performance of the mobile robot while minimizing inter-robot communications. The algorithm takes into consideration the proximity of the mobile robot to the task, the priority of the task, the capability required by the task, the capabilities of the mobile robot, and the rarity of the capability within the population of mobile robots. We evaluate the proposed algorithm in a simulation study and compare it to alternative approaches, including the contract net protocol, an approach …
