Mitochondria In Energy-Limited States : Mechanisms That Blunt The Signaling Of Cell Death., Steven Hand, Michael Menze Jan 2008

Mitochondria In Energy-Limited States : Mechanisms That Blunt The Signaling Of Cell Death., Steven Hand, Michael Menze

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Cellular conditions experienced during energy-limited states – elevated calcium, shifts in cellular adenylate status, compromised mitochondrial membrane potential – are precisely those that trigger, at least in mammals, the mitochondrion to initiate opening of the permeability transition pore, to assemble additional protein release channels, and to release pro-apoptotic factors. These proapototic factors in turn activate initiator and executer caspases. How is activation of mitochondria-based pathways for the signaling of apoptotic and necrotic cell death avoided under conditions of hypoxia, anoxia, diapause, estivation and anhydrobiosis? Functional trade-offs in environmental tolerance may have occurred in parallel with the evolution of diversified pathways …

Tiered Consent And The Tyranny Of Choice, Natalie Ram Jan 2008

Tiered Consent And The Tyranny Of Choice, Natalie Ram

All Faculty Scholarship

Regulations and doctrine governing human tissue research are facing immense

pressure to ensure respect for the interests of tissue providers and of

researchers.Tiered consent presents tissue providers with a menu of research

categories to which they may consent, and it is a recognized best practice. Yet,

evidence in consumer psychology suggests that abundant choice causes decision

makers to experience information overload, make arbitrary choices, refrain from

choosing altogether, and experience regret following decision making. These

patterns result in systematically lower quality decision making. This article fleshes

out the potential limitations of expanded choice in tiered consent situations so that

use …

Regulating Direct-To-Consumer Genetic Testing: Protecting The Consumer Without Quashing A Medical Revolution, Jennifer A. Gniady

Fordham Law Review

This Note examines the existing gaps in regulating genetic tests that are sold directly to consumers and the arguments for and against greater regulation. It advocates adopting an approach that shores up existing regulation of the accuracy of genetic tests under the Food and Drug Administration and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment, while continuing to promote an open market for selling tests directly to consumers. The Note looks to a variety of additional mechanisms for providing further consumer protections such as incentives for voluntary participation in the Food and Drug Administration approval process, an expanded watchdog role for professional organizations, and …

"Obvious To Try": A Proper Patentability Standard In The Pharmaceutical Arts?, Andrew V. Trask Jan 2008

"Obvious To Try": A Proper Patentability Standard In The Pharmaceutical Arts?, Andrew V. Trask

Fordham Law Review

Pharmaceutical research often entails making small modifications to candidate drug molecules--modifications that might be deemed “obvious to try”--and then studying the largely unpredictable, yet critical, resulting biological effects. Recognizing this characteristic unpredictability, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has traditionally upheld the patentability of obvious-to-try pharmaceutical inventions. This approach has been challenged, however, by the U.S. Supreme Court's 2007 decision in KSR International Co. v. Teleflex Inc. This Note reviews the history of the obvious-to-try test and considers the Federal Circuit's post-KSR inconsistency regarding obviousness in the pharmaceutical arts. This Note argues that KSR does not permit …

Are Storylines Patentable? Testing The Boundaries Of Patentable Subject Matter, Anu R. Sawkar Jan 2008

Are Storylines Patentable? Testing The Boundaries Of Patentable Subject Matter, Anu R. Sawkar

Fordham Law Review

This Note examines doctrinal issues relating to the patentability of nonphysical inventions by assessing a proposal to patent storylines for use in books and movies. Analyzing recent and historical case law regarding the limits of patentable subject matter, this Note identifies four points of doctrinal tension whose resolution will determine the extent to which nonphysical inventions, such as the storyline proposal, are patentable. This Note suggests how the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit should resolve these tensions in upcoming cases and proposes boundaries for the patentability of nonphysical inventions.

Should Preemption Apply In A Pharmaceutical Context? An Analysis Of The Preemption Debate And What Regulatory Compliance Statutes Contribute To The Discussion, Jennifer A. Surprenant Jan 2008

Should Preemption Apply In A Pharmaceutical Context? An Analysis Of The Preemption Debate And What Regulatory Compliance Statutes Contribute To The Discussion, Jennifer A. Surprenant

Fordham Law Review

Should the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s determination that a product is safe negate a private litigant’s cause of action under state law in all circumstances, unless the FDA determines that the manufacturer withheld relevant information regarding the safety of the product? This Note concludes that such federal preemption is proper because the FDA is fully capable of making a determination regarding the adequacy of the information disclosed by a pharmaceutical manufacturer without state interference. Additionally, such interference on the state level hinders the FDA’s objectives and effective functioning. Thus, determinations about the adequacy of the information provided to the …

A Novel And Generalizable Organotypic Slice Platform To Evaluate Stem Cell Potential For Targeting Pediatric Brain Tumors., Shengwen Calvin Li, William Gunter Loudon

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Brain tumors are now the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children under age 15. Malignant gliomas are, for all practical purposes, incurable and new therapeutic approaches are desperately needed. One emerging strategy is to use the tumor tracking capacity inherent in many stem cell populations to deliver therapeutic agents to the brain cancer cells. Current limitations of the stem cell therapy strategy include that stem cells are treated as a single entity and lack of uniform technology is adopted for selection of clinically relevant sub-populations of stem cells. Specifically, therapeutic success relies on the selection of a clinically competent …

Targeting Nf-Kappab: A Promising Molecular Therapy In Inflammatory Arthritis., Jorge A. Roman-Blas, Sergio A. Jimenez

Scleroderma Center Faculty Papers

The nuclear factor-kappa B family of transcription factors is intimately involved in the regulation of the inflammatory responses that play a fundamental role in the damage of articular tissues. Thus, many studies have examined the important contributions of components of the NF-kappaB signaling pathways to the pathogenesis of various rheumatic diseases and their pharmacologic modulation. Currently available therapeutic agents including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, nutraceuticals, and disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, as well as novel specific small-molecule inhibitors have been employed. In addition, promising nucleic acid-based strategies have shown encouraging results. However, further research will be needed before NF-kappaB-aimed strategies become an …

The Colonial Zoanthid Palythoa Caribaeorum: Population Dynamics On Southeast Florida Reefs, Joanna C. Walczak Jan 2008

The Colonial Zoanthid Palythoa Caribaeorum: Population Dynamics On Southeast Florida Reefs, Joanna C. Walczak

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The colonial zoanthid Palythoa caribaeorum (Cnidaria, Zoanthidea) (Duchassaing and Michelotti 1861) is a major benthic component of most Caribbean reefs and is an extremely aggressive spatial competitor (Suchanek and Green 1981). This study looks at annual visits to 16 permanent monitoring sites over 3 reef designations (Inshore Ridge Complex, Middle Reef, and Outer Reef) in Broward County, Florida from 2002-2006. The data obtained in this study fills an informational void regarding the role of zoanthids in the southeast Florida reef benthic community. The study was conducted in two parts. Part One used digital imagery analysis to quantify the spatial cover …
