Effects Of A Supplement Designed To Increase Atp Levels On Muscle Strength, Power Output, And Endurance, Trent J. Herda, Eric D. Ryan, Jeffrey R. Stout, Joel T. Cramer

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background: The present study examined the acute effects of a nutritional supplement intended to improve adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentrations on vertical jump height, isometric strength of the leg extensors, leg extension endurance, and forearm flexion endurance.

Methods: Twenty-four healthy men (mean age ± SD = 23 ± 4 yrs, stature = 181 ± 7 cm, and body mass = 82 ± 12 kg) volunteered to complete a familiarization trial plus 2 randomly-ordered experimental trials separated by a 7-day washout period. Participants received either 6 (body mass < 91 kg) or 8 (body mass ≥ 91 kg) tablets of the treatment (TR; 625 mg of adenylpyrophosphoric acid and calcium pyruvate, 350.8 mg of cordyceps sinensis extract and yohimbine hydrochloride) or placebo (PL; 980 mg of microcrystalline cellulose) 1 hour prior to the following tests: countermovement vertical jump (CVJ), forearm flexion repetitions to exhaustion, isometric maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) of the leg extensors, and a 50-repetition maximal concentric isokinetic leg extension endurance test.

Results: There were no differences between the TR and PL trials for CVJ height …

Effectiveness Of Lethal, Directed Wolf-Depredation Control In Minnesota, Elizabeth Harper, William J. Paul, L. David Mech, Sanford Weisberg Jan 2008

Effectiveness Of Lethal, Directed Wolf-Depredation Control In Minnesota, Elizabeth Harper, William J. Paul, L. David Mech, Sanford Weisberg

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Wolf (Canis lupus) depredations on livestock in Minnesota, USA, are an economic problem for many livestock producers, and depredating wolves are lethally controlled. We sought to determine the effectiveness of lethal control through the analysis of data from 923 government-verified wolf depredations from 1979 to 1998. We analyzed the data by 1) assessing the correlations between the number of wolves killed in response to depredations with number of depredations the following year at state and local levels, and 2) the time to the next depredation. No analysis indicated that trapping wolves substantially reduced the following year’s depredations at …

The Tropical Forest And Fire Emissions Experiment: Laboratory Fire Measurements And Synthesis Of Campaign Data, Robert J. Yokelson, Ted J. Christian, T. G. Karl, Alex Guenther

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

As part of the Tropical Forest and Fire Emissions Experiment (TROFFEE), tropical forest fuels were burned in a large. biomass-fire simulation facility and the smoke was characterized with open-path Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton-transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS), gas chromatography (GC), GC/PTR-MS, and filter sampling of the particles. In most cases, about one-third of the fuel chlorine ended up in the particles and about one-half remained in the ash. About 50% of the mass of non-methane organic compounds (NMOC) emitted by these fires could be identified with the available instrumentation. The lab fire emission factors (EF, g compound emitted …

What Constitutes A Natural Fire Regime? Insight From The Ecology And Distribution Of Coniferous Forest Birds In North America, Richard L. Hutto, Courtney J. Conway, Victoria A. Saab, Jeffrey R. Walters Jan 2008

What Constitutes A Natural Fire Regime? Insight From The Ecology And Distribution Of Coniferous Forest Birds In North America, Richard L. Hutto, Courtney J. Conway, Victoria A. Saab, Jeffrey R. Walters

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Bird species that specialize in the use of burned forest conditions can provide insight into the prehistoric fire regimes associated with the forest types that they have occupied over evolutionary time. The nature of their adaptations reflects the specific post-fire conditions that occurred prior to the unnatural influence of humans after European settlement. Specifically, the post-fire conditions, nest site locations, and social systems of two species (Bachman's sparrow [Aimophila aestivalis] and red-cockaded woodpecker [Picoides borealis]) suggest that, prehistorically, a frequent, low-severity fire regime characterized the southeastern pine system in which they evolved. In contrast, the patterns …

Stakeholder Governance: A Bad Idea Getting Worse, George W. Dent Jan 2008

Stakeholder Governance: A Bad Idea Getting Worse, George W. Dent

Faculty Publications

Calls for a stakeholder voice in corporate governance never end, as evidenced by the Symposium Corporations and Their Communities to which this paper is a contribution. The demise of labor unions and explosion of executive compensation while the income of most Americans has stagnated over the last several years has precipitated cries for remedial action, some of which include stakeholder governance. Although complaints about deepening inequality are just, other remedies should be pursued. The traditional objections to stakeholder governance remain valid: the interests of stakeholder groups clash not only with those of the shareholders but also with each other, and …

A Theoretical Study For The Reactivation Of O2 Inhibited [Fe-Fe]-Hydrogenase, Stefan Motiu Jan 2008

A Theoretical Study For The Reactivation Of O2 Inhibited [Fe-Fe]-Hydrogenase, Stefan Motiu

ETD Archive

The current investigation presents a reactivation pathway of the exogenously inhibited H-cluster (viz., by O2, or OH-, which metabolizes to H2O), for both vacuum and aqueous enzyme phase. The H-cluster is the catalytic site of [Fe-Fe]-hydrogenase, with the latter extracted from Desulfovibrio desulfuricans (Dd) bacteria. It consists of proximal iron, Fep, and distal Fed subunit, [Fep-Fed], which is bridged by di(thiomethyl)amine (DTMA) ligand, and a proximal cubane subunit, [Fe4-S4]2+p. [Fep-Fed] is coordinated by two cyanides (CN-), two terminal carbonyls (COt), and a bridging carbonyl (COb)*. An Fe atom from [Fe4-S4]2+p connects Fep through a cysteinyl sulfur (of Cys382). Density functional …

Experimental Confirmation Of Protandric Simultaneous Hermaphroditism In A Caridean Shrimp Outside Of The Genus Lysmata, Helio Laubenheimer, Andrew L. Rhyne Jan 2008

Experimental Confirmation Of Protandric Simultaneous Hermaphroditism In A Caridean Shrimp Outside Of The Genus Lysmata, Helio Laubenheimer, Andrew L. Rhyne

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Caridean shrimps display a variety of sexual systems including gonochorism and various forms of protandry but rarely simultaneous hermaphroditism. Protandric simultaneous hermaphroditism (PSH) has thus far only been demonstrated in the genus Lysmata. The first report of simultaneous hermaphroditism in a caridean shrimp was with Exhippolysmata ensirostris. However, this was not confirmed, since this species was also considered to be strictly protandric. Therefore, inconclusive results about this species’ true sexual system led us to examine Exhippolysmata oplophoroides. Mating between female phase individuals resulted in successful spawning, embryonic development and hatching of viable larvae. Furthermore, we have confirmed that this species …

Bioecology Of The New Invasive Fruit Fly Bactrocera Invadens (Diptera: Tephritidae) In Kenya And Its Interaction With Indigenous Mango-Infesting Fruit Fly Species, Ivan Rwomushana Jan 2008

Bioecology Of The New Invasive Fruit Fly Bactrocera Invadens (Diptera: Tephritidae) In Kenya And Its Interaction With Indigenous Mango-Infesting Fruit Fly Species, Ivan Rwomushana

All PhD Dissertations

Bactrocera invadens Drew, Tsuruta & White (Diptera: Tephritidae), an alien invasive fruit fly species of Asian origin was first detected in Kenya in 2003. This pest has rapidly spread across sub-Saharan Africa and is currently reported from at least 24 countries. Because of its novelty status, there was no information on its biology and ecology that could aid development of management efforts. There was also evidence that B. invadens eo-infested the same fruits with native fruit fly species and it was speculated that this could result in competitive displacement of native fruit flies. This study, therefore, was initiated to establish …

The African wild silkmoth, Gonometa postica Walker produces silk of high quality. A study on the spatial distribution and biology of G. postica on host and non-host plants and the parasitism rates and reproductive strategy of its parasitoids was conducted during the long and short rainy seasons in 2006 and 2007. Three sites, each in the Imba and Mumoni forests of Mwingi eastern Kenya, were selected for sampling. One hundred trees of the host plants of G. postica were sampled at each site, in addition to · the non-host plant species having G. postica pupae. In order of decreasing abundance, …

The Ecology And Economic Potential Of Wild Silkmoth Anaphe Panda (Boisduval) (Lepidoptera:Thaumetopoeidae) In The Kakamega Forest, Mbahin Norber

All PhD Dissertations

The superiority of silk as a textile fibre has been recognized from time immemorial, the luxurious look: sleek feel and lustre of silk fabric are unquestionably inimitable. The demand for silk is constantly increasing in the world market and this provides excellent opportunities for any producer country to diversify and optimize any source of production. African countries that enjoy congenital climate for rearing wild silkmoths have great scope and opportunity to promote sericulture. Studies were carried out during 2005-2007 on the ecology and economic potential of wild silkmoth Anaphe panda (Boisduval) which occurs in the Kakamega Forest. western Kenya. Silkworms …

Potential Of Entomopathogenic Fungi In The Control Of Economically Important Spider Mites Species Tetranychus Urticae Koch And Tetranychus Evansi Baker & Pritchard, David Mugisho Bugeme

All PhD Dissertations

The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, and the tomato spider mite, T. evansi Baker & Pritchard (Acari: Tetranychidae), are among the most important pest of horticultural crops, such as tomato, beans, cur flowers, eggplants and several other vegetables. While T. urticae has been known as a worldwide pest of a wide range of horticultural crops both outdoors and in the greenhouses, the importance of T. evansi has dramatically increased during the last decade. In Africa, farmers largely rely on synthetic acaricides to control these two pests. However, due to problems related to the use of synthetic acaricides in controlling …

Association Of Epstein-Barr Virus With Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma And Current Status Of Development Of Cancer-Derived Cell Lines, Charles A. Gullo Phd, Wong Kein Low, Gerrard Teoh

Biochemistry and Microbiology

It is well known that the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) contributes directly to tumourigenesis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), primarily in the undifferentiated form of NPC (WHO type III; UNPC or UC), which is commonly found in South East Asia. Unfortunately, research in NPC has been severely hampered by the lack of authentic EBV-positive (EBV+) human NPC cell lines for study. Since 1975, there have been more than 20 reported NPC cell lines. However, many of these NPC-derived cell lines do not express EBV transcripts in long-term culture, and therefore that finding may dispute the fundamental theory of NPC carcinogenesis. In fact, …

Cholinergic Neurons Regulate And Utilize Gdnf Secreted By C2c12 Skeletal Muscle Cells In Culture, John-Mary Vianney, John Spitsbergen

Biological Sciences Faculty and Graduate Student Research

Glialcell line-derived neurotrophicfactor (GDNF) has been regarded as a potent survival factor for a subpopulation of neurons. It has been shown that GDNF expression is upregulated in skeletal muscle of patients with early stage of neuromuscular diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Previous results from our laboratory showed that neural cells regulate GDNF secretion by skeletal muscle; non-innervated skeletal muscle appear to secrete more GDNF compared to innervated skeletal muscle. Two aims were examined in the current study. First, to examine whether neural cells inhibit GDNF through acetylcholine release. Second was to examine whether differentiated NG108-15 neural cells secrete …
