A Comparison Of Methods To Concentrate Viruses From Environmental Waters Using Ms2 As A Model, Xunyan Ye, R.D. Ellender, Shiao Y. Wang

Presentations

Viruses such as Rotavirus, Adenovirus and Norovirus are important etiological agents of gastroenteritis worldwide. With the high sensitivity and specificity of PCR, it is now possible to develop PCR-based methods to detect and quantify pathogenic viruses in environmental water samples. To develop reliable methods however, an effective procedure to concentrate viruses from large volumes of water is required. Because of the scale of concentration required, the procedure often requires two steps. The first to reduce tens of liters of water to less than half a liter and then a second to concentrate the sample to a final volume of less …

Worms As Wedges: Effects Of Sediment Mechanics On Burrowing Behavior, Kelly M. Dorgan, Sanjay R. Arwade, Peter A. Jumars Jan 2008

Worms As Wedges: Effects Of Sediment Mechanics On Burrowing Behavior, Kelly M. Dorgan, Sanjay R. Arwade, Peter A. Jumars

Journal of Marine Research

Recent studies document linear elastic response of muddy marine sediments to load and deformation on temporal and spatial scales relevant to animal movement, with burrowers making openings for movement in such sediments by fracture. Cracks propagate through linear elastic solids in mode I (opening-mode crack growth) when the stress intensity factor (KI) at the crack tip exceeds the material's fracture toughness (KIc). Fracture mechanics depend on material stiffness as well as fracture toughness, and we prepared a range of transparent gels that varied in stiffness and fracture toughness to assess the dependence of burrowing …

Evaluating Salt-Fingering Theories, R. Inoue, E. Kunze, L. St. Laurent, R. W. Schmitt, J. M. Toole Jan 2008

Evaluating Salt-Fingering Theories, R. Inoue, E. Kunze, L. St. Laurent, R. W. Schmitt, J. M. Toole

Journal of Marine Research

The NATRE fine- and microstructure data set is revisited to test salt-finger amplitude theories. Dependences of the mixing efficiency Γ, microscale buoyancy Reynolds number Re and thermal Cox number CxT on 5-m density ratio Rρ and gradient Richardson number Ri are examined. The observed mixing efficiency is too high to be explained by linear fastest-growing fingers but can be reproduced by wavenumbers 0.5-0.9 times lower than the fastest-growing wavenumber. Constraining these fingers with a hybrid wave/finger Froude number or a finger Reynolds number cannot reproduce the observed trends with Rρ or Ri, respectively. This suggests that …

Turbulence And Boluses On An Internal Beach, Daniel Bourgault, Dan E. Kelley, Peter S. Galbraith Jan 2008

Turbulence And Boluses On An Internal Beach, Daniel Bourgault, Dan E. Kelley, Peter S. Galbraith

Journal of Marine Research

In a manner similar to that of surface waves on beaches, high-frequency interfacial waves (IWs) may break when approaching the 'internal coastline,' where the undisturbed pycnocline intersects the shoaling bottom. This process has been studied previously in idealized laboratory and numerical experiments but there are few field observations to document the properties of IWs shoaling on natural internal beaches. This paper presents observations of currents, density and turbulence collected inshore of the break point of an internal beach of the St. Lawrence Estuary. A series of large- and small-amplitude complex-shaped and unorganized internal boluses was observed. The structure of these …

Influence Of Advective Bio-Irrigation On Carbon And Nitrogen Cycling In Sandy Sediments, Taehee Na, Britta Gribsholt, Oleksiy S. Galaktionov, Tongsup Lee, Filip J. R. Meysman Jan 2008

Influence Of Advective Bio-Irrigation On Carbon And Nitrogen Cycling In Sandy Sediments, Taehee Na, Britta Gribsholt, Oleksiy S. Galaktionov, Tongsup Lee, Filip J. R. Meysman

Journal of Marine Research

In sandy sediments, the burrow ventilation activity of benthic macrofauna can generate substantial advective flows within the sediment surrounding their burrows. Here we investigated the effects of such advective bio-irrigation on carbon and nitrogen cycling in sandy sediments. To this end, we combined a range of complementary experimental and modelling approaches in a microcosm study of the lugworm Arenicola marina (Polychaeta: Annelida). Bio-irrigation rates were determined using uranine as a tracer, while benthic fluxes of oxygen (O2), total carbon dioxide (TCO2), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (NH4+, ΣNO2− + NO3−) …

Richard W. Garvine (1940 –2007), Kenneth H. Brink, Glen G. Gawarkiewicz

Journal of Marine Research

Richard Garvine passed away on December 10, 2007 of pancreatic cancer, and the ocean science community lost a respected, humane leader whose impact will endure on several levels. Rich was born in 1940 in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. His undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering at M.I.T. was followed by a Ph.D. at Princeton University in 1965, also in aerospace engineering. He was hired by the General Electric Space Sciences Laboratory as a theoretical aerodynamicist, but in 1969, perhaps prodded by a downturn in the aerospace field, he made the rather dramatic shift to a position as an Assistant Professor of Oceanography at …

Ocean Current Observations From Nares Strait To The West Of Greenland: Interannual To Tidal Variability And Forcing, Andreas Münchow, Humfrey Melling Jan 2008

Ocean Current Observations From Nares Strait To The West Of Greenland: Interannual To Tidal Variability And Forcing, Andreas Münchow, Humfrey Melling

Journal of Marine Research

During 2003–06, as part of the Arctic Sub-Arctic Ocean Flux (ASOF) experiment, an array of oceansensing instruments was deployed at 80.5N latitude to investigate the flux of seawater from the Arctic Ocean via Nares Strait, the pathway to the west of Greenland. Three-year measurements of current from this experiment provide, for the first time at periods longer than a single season, the seawater flux and its variability via this important pathway. Below 30-m depth the average flux of volume 2003–06 was 0.57±0.09 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3 s–1) southward over a 38-km wide section reaching …

Occurrence And Distribution Of Cyanobacteria And Their Toxins In Silver Lake, New Hampshire, Françoise Morison Jan 2008

Occurrence And Distribution Of Cyanobacteria And Their Toxins In Silver Lake, New Hampshire, Françoise Morison

Center for Freshwater Biology

A study of Silver Lake, NH was performed as part of a 5-lake assessment of cyanobacteria prevalence and distribution. Multi-parameter fluorescence probe measurements of chlorophyll a and cyanobacteria concentrations (PC, phycocyanin fluorescence) were evaluated in addition to physical and chemical characteristics of the lake. Silver Lake did not exhibit summer stratification suggesting a recent mixing event. It had oligotrophic levels of Chlorophyll a (1.93 ± 0.06 mg L-1) and of TP (10.10 mg L-1), yet PC levels were the highest of all the lakes studied (248691 ± 963 Microcystis cell equivalents mL-1). The cyanobacteria Microcystis dominated the phytoplankton community. Microcystin …

Technology-Aided Participative Methods In Environmental Assessment: An International Perspective, Ainhoa Gonzalez, Alan Gilmer, Ronan Foley, John Sweeney, John Fry

Articles

Provisions for citizen involvement in the assessment of potential environmental effects of certain plans, programmes and projects are present in current legislation. An international survey revealed that public participation is common practice in European and some other countries worldwide. However, a number of issues are observed to affect public involvement in EIA/SEA processes and expert opinion differs when evaluating the effectiveness of existing participative methods. Results suggest that technology-aided methods can improve traditional participation processes. In particular, GIS has the potential to increase community knowledge and enhance involvement by communicating information more effectively. Variable accessibility to technology and data quality …

Speaking Words Of Wisdom: Let It Be: The Reexamination Of The Human Embryonic Stem Cell Patents, Julia Vom Wege Dovi

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

Embryonic stem cell research represents an area of scientific inquiry that bears great promise, and patent law ensures that stem cell technology is both protected and utilized to its fullest potential. This article analyzes why the USPTO should not invalidate or narrow three challenged stem cell patents owned by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) through the Public Patent Foundation. The author outlines the science behind stem cells, explains the applicable law, and articulates the policy considerations relevant to patent law and stem cells. Ultimately, the author argues that that the challenged patents should remain valid because they have not …

Freeriders And Diversity In The Legal Academy: A New Dirty Dozen List, Ediberto Román, Christopher B. Carbot

Faculty Publications

Latina and Latino student enrollment in U.S. law schools the last few decades has increased. This increase, however, has not resulted in a comparable increase in Latino and Latina law professors. To foster diversity in law school faculties and to increase Latina representation, the “Dirty Dozen List” was published. The List was comprised of the top twelve U.S. law schools located in high Latina populated areas but lacking a single Latina professor on the faculty. The List served to increase awareness of the lack of diversity at some of the nation’s top legal institutions, as well as “shame” these schools …

The Southeast (SE) Florida coral reef system is the northern extension of the Florida reef tract. This high latitude system lies offshore a heavily populated and urbanized coast and therefore is affected by numerous environmental and anthropogenic stressors. Using annual monitoring data collected in 2004, the southeast lorida reef community was analyzed to investigate patterns in community composition in various habitat types. Data was collected by SCUBA divers who conducted a 30m2 belt transect survey at 24 sample sites offshore Broward County (SE), Florida. Sites ranged in depth range from six to 18 meters. The 24 sites occurred on five …
