A Case Study Of Applied Co-Design In 3d Virtual Space For Facilitating Bicycle Use On Light Rail Systems, James Arnold
A Case Study Of Applied Co-Design In 3d Virtual Space For Facilitating Bicycle Use On Light Rail Systems, James Arnold
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Cycling is highly recommended by experts concerned with environmental and public health. Cycling does not produce CO2 emissions, can be economical, and can improve physical fitness. However, the barriers to cycling remain significant to many. Combined with a light rail system the bicycle offers a compelling alternative to automobiles; yet, bicycles are denied access on certain rail systems because they can take too much space away from pedestrians who share the light rail interior. To help solve this problem, Co-Design in 3D virtual space is proposed as an effective means of creating an innovative design solution. The digital questionnaires and …
The Digital Cultural Atlas Project: Design Research And Cultural Narratives. An Experiential Approach For Design Education., Kaye Shumack
The Digital Cultural Atlas Project: Design Research And Cultural Narratives. An Experiential Approach For Design Education., Kaye Shumack
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper outlines an approach developed for teaching research methods in a graphic design program, working in an interdisciplinary context with cultural researchers. Initially, the Digital Cultural Atlas (DCA) is introduced, as a 'work-in-progress' web site, which locates a diversity of geographic and place-based cultural resources across Greater Western Sydney. The initial information architecture consists of ‘bird's eye view' cartographic maps and cultural project resources. Through a teaching project in design research, students consider ways in which experiential ‘on the ground' visual stories can be included. Initial student research identifies a diversity of observed cultural community contexts and situations. This …
Dialogical Encounter Argument As A Source Of Rigour In The Practice Based Phd, Sally Mclaughlin
Dialogical Encounter Argument As A Source Of Rigour In The Practice Based Phd, Sally Mclaughlin
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper distinguishes between three views of argument: 'argument as structure,' 'argument as confrontation' and 'argument as dialogical encounter.' Empirical studies of the criteria that examiners bring to the assessment of PhDs are cited. The studies provide evidence that qualities that align one or other of the three modes of argument figure significantly in the criteria that examiners bring to the assessment process. Embedded in the studies are respondents' comments that suggest that the range of conceptions of argument held by PhD examiners is broad. Explicit use of the term 'argument' is often made in reference to a minimal concept …
Making Exhibitions, Brokering Meaning: Designing New Connections Across Communities Of Practice, Anita Kocsis, Carolyn Barnes
Making Exhibitions, Brokering Meaning: Designing New Connections Across Communities Of Practice, Anita Kocsis, Carolyn Barnes
DRS Biennial Conference Series
New media museum exhibits often see designers representing the research of expert content providers. Despite perceptions that such exhibits provide museum visitors with a greater depth and range of experience, differences in knowledge and practice between designers and content providers can see content development become an unruly, competitive process in which audience experience, digital mediation, visualisation techniques and meaning become contested territory. Drawing on Etienne Wenger's theory of 'communities of practice', this paper argues that designers' advocacy for audiences and distance from exhibition content well positions them to broker interdisciplinary goal setting so that exhibitions observe the representational objectives of …
Design For Social And Environmental Enterprise, Clare Brass, Flora Bowden
Design For Social And Environmental Enterprise, Clare Brass, Flora Bowden
DRS Biennial Conference Series
SEED Foundation undertakes action research to develop new, innovative ways for design to most effectively contribute towards sustainable development. The research that follows is not the result of academic investigations but rather, a culmination of 20 years direct professional involvement in the sector. By aligning current political goals with cutting edge design thinking and good business sense, this paper presents our ideas on how more designers can profitably solve social and environmental problems through their work. It specifically investigates how the still emerging discipline of service design, in dealing more with relationships and experiences than material objects, offers inherent social …

Food As Experience A Design And Evaluation Methodology, Debra Satterfield, Sunghyun Kang, Roger Baer, Nora Ladjahasan
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This research, conducted for Frito Lay-North America, Inc, demonstrates how new product designs, package designs, concepts, and prototypes can be created based on the social, emotional, cognitive, and sensory information gathered through a combined methodology based on activity theory, Kansei Engineering and the ZMET process. The study examines how activity theory can be used to observe situational settings mediated by products for the purpose of collecting significant social and behavioral data. It also examines how Kansei methods can be used to evaluate sensory experiences and how the ZMET process can be used to gather demographic and marketing data. The outcome …

Concept Blending And Dissimilarity: Factors For Creative Design Process: A Comparison Between The Linguistic Interpretation Process And Design Process, Yukari Nagai, Toshiharu Taura, Futoshi Mukai
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This study investigated the design process in order to clarify the characteristics of the essence of the creative design process vis-a -vis the interpretation process, by carrying out design experiments. The authors analyzed the characteristics of the creative design process by comparing it with the linguistic interpretation process, from the viewpoints of thought types (analogy, blending, and thematic relation) and recognition types (commonalities and alignable and nonalignable differences). A new concept can be created by using the noun-noun phrase as the process of synthesizing two concepts—the simplest and most essential process in formulating a new concept from existing ones. Furthermore, …
Designing For Design Activity, Sunghyun Kang
Designing For Design Activity, Sunghyun Kang
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The area of graphic design has expanded since digital media was introduced, and it requires new creative thinking skills in the design process. This paper proposes a design process for a graphic design graduate class using activity theory as a theoretical background. This design process consists of three phases to solve the design problems within diverse design projects. Each phase was examined in terms of how the elements of activity theory could apply to the design process. As a research method, Engeström's activity system model was adapted and explored in the design processes. A case study is presented to see …

Visual Rhetoric In Outdoor Advertising, Marja Seliger
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The paper presents a research, the aim of which is to find out how graphic expressions and visual language can be used for persuasion. The research material consists of outdoor advertisements photographed in their actual exhibition places in a city environment. Outdoor advertising media, which are used to communicate visual messages from a sender to several addressees, participate in building the visual city culture and open manifold solutions in design. The visual language used in the research material is analyzed in order to find out how advertising messages, their denotations and connotations, are constructed and how arguments used for persuasion …
Yeşilçam Film Posters Of The 60s And 70s: Representing Romance, Nazli Eda Noyan
Yeşilçam Film Posters Of The 60s And 70s: Representing Romance, Nazli Eda Noyan
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Cinema and movie poster have the most powerful potential of establishing the ethos and mythology of people, and both assume an audience on the premises of a cultural context within which they are produced. So a movie poster contributing to mass communication through designed visual means contains a lot of information about film industry, evolution of design, craftsmanship, and the taste of the artists and society as well as standing for a strong evidence of its time. The decade 1965-1975 is important for Turkish cinema for being the golden years of this industry. Besides all the good memories associated with …
How Design Plays Strategic Roles In Internet Service Innovation: Lessons From Korean Companies, Yu-Jin Kim, Kyung-Won Chung
How Design Plays Strategic Roles In Internet Service Innovation: Lessons From Korean Companies, Yu-Jin Kim, Kyung-Won Chung
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In order to survive in the highly competitive internet business, companies have to provide differentiated services that can satisfy the rapidly changing users' tastes and needs. Designers have been increasingly committed to achieving user satisfaction by generating and visualizing innovative solutions in new internet service development. The roles of internet service design have expanded from a narrow focus on aesthetics into a more strategic aspect. This paper investigates the methods of managing design in order to enhance companies' competitiveness in internet business. The main research processes are to: (1) explore the current state of internet service design in Korea through …
Learning Strategies In Interpreting Text: From Comprehension To Illustration, Mike Mcauley
Learning Strategies In Interpreting Text: From Comprehension To Illustration, Mike Mcauley
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Learning strategies can be described as behaviours and thoughts a learner engages in during learning that are aimed at gaining knowledge. Learners are, to use Mayer's (1996) constructivist definition, ‘sense makers'. We can therefore position this to mean that, if learners are sense makers, then learning strategies are essentially cognitive processes used when learners are striving to make sense out of newly presented material. This paper intends to demonstrate that such thoughts and behaviours can be made explicit and that students can co-ordinate the basic cognitive processes of selecting, organising and integrating. I will discuss two learning strategies which were …
The Ephemeral Aesthetic Of Spontaneous Design On The Streets Of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Robert Harland, Maria Cecilia Loschiavo Santos
The Ephemeral Aesthetic Of Spontaneous Design On The Streets Of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Robert Harland, Maria Cecilia Loschiavo Santos
DRS Biennial Conference Series
There are few opportunities when the poor and prosperous can be spoken about with respect to the same, shared cultural experience. And yet, visual culture, and the design process that contributes to its materialisation in specific contexts, offers an opportunity to recognise a socially inclusive activity that reveals similarity rather than difference. This paper celebrates an ephemeral aesthetic that is appreciated by people at different ends of the economic, political and social spectrum. A mutual appreciation for the medium of collage differs only in terms of the environment within which the recycled object is eventually revealed. This paper explores some …
Authorities/Knowledge/Beliefs/Outcomes: 'Governing' In The Profession Of Graphic Design In The Us, Kate Ann B Lamere
Authorities/Knowledge/Beliefs/Outcomes: 'Governing' In The Profession Of Graphic Design In The Us, Kate Ann B Lamere
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This exploratory research examines an under-evaluated aspect of graphic design in the United States: the nature of the profession. Discourse analysis that applies the theory of governmentality is used to assess previously collected, open-ended interviews with graphic designers, as well as other source material. Based on the late work of Michel Foucault, governmentality considers how authorities govern through the creation and dissemination of knowledge, which works through individuals' desires and beliefs and leads to unpredictable outcomes. In this research, two ‘authorities' within the graphic design profession are identified and considered – design competitions and graphic design higher education. Both authorities …
Psychoeducational Dissemination Across Distance: The Viability Of Telehealth With The Deaf Population, Jaime A. B. Wilson
Psychoeducational Dissemination Across Distance: The Viability Of Telehealth With The Deaf Population, Jaime A. B. Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
Within the deaf population, an extreme mental health professional shortage exists that may be alleviated with videoconferencing technology – also known as telehealth. Moreover, much needed mental health education within the deaf population remains largely inaccessible. Researchers have forewarned that the deaf population may remain underserved if significant changes do not take place with traditional service delivery methods. The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of telehealth in teaching psychoeducational objectives, with special emphasis given to its application to the deaf population. The results of this study indicate that telehealth can be considered to be an efficacious …

Syncretism In Narrativity, Visuality And Tactility: A Case Study Of Information Visualization Concerning A News Media Event, Ashley Holmes
Syncretism In Narrativity, Visuality And Tactility: A Case Study Of Information Visualization Concerning A News Media Event, Ashley Holmes
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This article re-examines the appropriateness of a conceptual framework based on the semiotic scholarship of Greimas and Courtés which Margaret Morse championed as being suitable for analysis of television and new media. That framework is supplemented with the suggestion that narrative, visual and tactile modes of communication involve syncretism. In a case study of information visualization examples produced for Australian news media during a mine collapse tragedy and rescue at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in Tasmania in 2006 this idea is used to identify communicative qualities potentially inherent in traditional print and television and emergent new media visualization techniques.

Barriers For Telecommunication Accessibility And Needs Assessment Of Video Relay Services (Vrs): Utilization Of Vrs For The Deaf Community, Minoru Yoshida
Barriers For Telecommunication Accessibility And Needs Assessment Of Video Relay Services (Vrs): Utilization Of Vrs For The Deaf Community, Minoru Yoshida
Theses
Approximately 28 million deaf and hard-of-hearing people reside in the United States, and a majority of them benefit from Telecommunications Relay Services which is mandated by Title IV of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Title IV of ADA was drafted based on the provision for TTY services. As Video Relay Services emerged in 2002, it surpassed TTY relay services because of its efficiency compared to the traditional TTY relay. However, Video Relay Services is a relatively new relay format, and no legal mandates for VRS technologies have been established. Thus, there is a strong need for a better understanding …

Sublime Jurisprudence: On The Ethical Education Of The Legal Imagination In Our Time, Richard K. Sherwin
Sublime Jurisprudence: On The Ethical Education Of The Legal Imagination In Our Time, Richard K. Sherwin
Chicago-Kent Law Review
The broad dissemination of digital communication technologies is raising disturbing questions about the nature of truth as representation. This epistemological crisis shares an uncanny affinity with the crisis of representation that lay at the heart of the baroque era during the seventeenth century in Europe. The resolution of that crisis, through the work of Descartes and others, came on the heels of a philosophical shift from the image to the sign. However, as Vico presciently realized 300 years ago, Descartes' semiotic model, together with the totalizing rational method that accompanies it, are ill-suited to civic flourishing. Today, signifiers shorn of …
Language And Graffiti Of Exceptional Individuals: Pedagogical Strategies In West Africa, Williams Emeka Obiozor
Language And Graffiti Of Exceptional Individuals: Pedagogical Strategies In West Africa, Williams Emeka Obiozor
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
This paper establishes the place of language and graffiti practiced by exceptional individuals in the interpretation of family values, the preservation of culture and traditional heritage of the Igbo community in Southeastern Nigeria. The paper also takes a cursory look at graffiti art and exceptionality in a time when the Igbo tradition and culture were highly respected, jealously guarded and deep-rooted in the heart and soul of its people. Graffiti creations by exceptional individuals transfer both oral and visual education to documented tradition; for societal knowledge and awareness, individual wisdom, expressions against repression, pride and recognition of Igbo language and …
