The Visual Analysis Of Heterogeneous Sex Role Interactions: A Content Analysis Of Popular Music Videos, Deanna Niccole Kimbrel
Theses
Hip Hop cultured music videos have raised concern among our nation’s leaders, parents and communities. Since the introduction of music videos in the early 1980s the medium has crossed cultural, regional and ethnic boundaries (Rose, 1994). This medium has been well researched since the 1980s. The focus of this study is Hip Hop cultured music videos from years 1989-2006. The uniqueness of this study is that it focuses on nonverbal sex role interactions in this genre of music videos. This study found many useful trends. For example, men were portrayed as more dominant and/or vertical than women in the sampled …
Surgeons And Bureaucrats: An Interactive Research Experience At The World Health Organization, Hannah Lust
Surgeons And Bureaucrats: An Interactive Research Experience At The World Health Organization, Hannah Lust
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
During a recent internship at a general hospital in my hometown of Dallas, I could occasionally be found lurking around the main surgical unit. I wanted to be surrounded by the atmosphere of saving lives by manipulating the tiniest capillaries, the most sensitive nerves, the most essential organs. The idea of racing against the clock to save a life, yet having to work with the utmost care is one that is unsettling and enthralling to me all at once. Surgery is infinitely intricate, exceedingly precise, and beautifully complex. And quite simply, it fascinates me. At the same time, I am …
Disparity In Copyright Protection: Focus On The Finished Image Ignores The Art In The Details , Karen D. Williams
Disparity In Copyright Protection: Focus On The Finished Image Ignores The Art In The Details , Karen D. Williams
American University Law Review
Courts initial reactions play a major role in the assessment of copyright protection. A quick recognition of pictorial quality can result in an easy finding of originality. Based upon the extremely low threshold, such a quick summation is not surprising or necessarily refutable. However, the blanket assumption of a pictorial quality in photography creates a disparity in copyright protection for works of graphic design, like maps, which may not emit that immediate pictorial or aesthetic quality but may still employ creative choice. Those works that “scream” their pictorial nature get cursory review while the more subtle are being categorized as …

Communicating Emotion Through Images And Music In Narrative Film, Peter Edward Hagan
Communicating Emotion Through Images And Music In Narrative Film, Peter Edward Hagan
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Art can be the bearer of expressive qualities embodied into the work by its creator. The creator of the work can imbed into the work his or her own feelings which are deeper than mere emotions. The emotions can be named, but the feelings are on a deeper subconscious more intangible level for which mere labels can not describe, but which in sensitive hands can be incorporated into the work. In the case of narrative film, which is a collaborative art form, it is the choices made by the film's director which facilitates this process, augmented by the musical score …

A Lightweight Buyer-Seller Watermarking Protocol, Yongdong Wu, Hwee Hwa Pang
A Lightweight Buyer-Seller Watermarking Protocol, Yongdong Wu, Hwee Hwa Pang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The buyer-seller watermarking protocol enables a seller to successfully identify a traitor from a pirated copy, while preventing the seller from framing an innocent buyer. Based on finite field theory and the homomorphic property of public key cryptosystems such as RSA, several buyer-seller watermarking protocols (N. Memon and P. W. Wong (2001) and C.-L. Lei et al. (2004)) have been proposed previously. However, those protocols require not only large computational power but also substantial network bandwidth. In this paper, we introduce a new buyer-seller protocol that overcomes those weaknesses by managing the watermarks. Compared with the earlier protocols, ours is …

Online Communities' Impact On The Profession Of Newspaper Design, Amanda Miller
Online Communities' Impact On The Profession Of Newspaper Design, Amanda Miller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The importance of the Internet to visual journalists is increasing with every technological progression. Recently online communities have formed, creating a commonplace for creative professionals to meet and share visual work. This study focuses on the possible impact of these emerging online communities on the newspaper design profession. Interviews of newspaper designers who participate in online communities specifically focused on the profession unveiled current and important transformations occurring within the newspaper design profession. Additionally, this study expands on both offline and online community theory, giving qualitative insight into future studies which may focus on the Internet's effects on various professions.
Spectral Image Utility For Target Detection Applications, Marcus S. Stefanou
Spectral Image Utility For Target Detection Applications, Marcus S. Stefanou
Theses
In a wide range of applications, images convey useful information about scenes. The “utility” of an image is defined with reference to the specific task that an observer seeks to accomplish, and differs from the “fidelity” of the image, which seeks to capture the ability of the image to represent the true nature of the scene. In remote sensing of the earth, various means of characterizing the utility of satellite and airborne imagery have evolved over the years. Recent advances in the imaging modality of spectral imaging have enabled synoptic views of the earth at many finely sampled wavelengths over …
The Design Of A Data Recorder To Test The Effects Of Color Contrast On 'This Side Up' Pictorial Markings On Package Orientation Within Ups Ground, Rupert Hurley
All Theses
A data recorder was built and qualified to record package orientation over time. The device was then used to observe the effects on package orientation during UPS ground shipping of current and modified ASTM D5445-03 'This Side Up' symbols. Modified symbols on packages demonstrated the effects of contrasting color relationships on symbol noticeability and human compliance. Shipping trials were conducted through UPS distribution centers for cube-shaped packages equipped with custom designed tri-axial accelerometers. Data recorded on 112 shipments provide comparisons of four ASTM D5445-03 'This Side Up' symbols: unmodified, modified blue, modified 'black and white', and control (no symbol). Data …
Factors Affecting Message Intelligibility Of Cued Speech Transliterators, Katherine Pelley
Factors Affecting Message Intelligibility Of Cued Speech Transliterators, Katherine Pelley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While a majority of deaf students mainstreamed in public schools rely on interpreters, little research has investigated interpreter skills and no research to date has focused on interpreter intelligibility (Kluwin & Stewart, 2001). This thesis is the second in a series of experiments designed to quantify the contribution of various factors affecting the intelligibility of interpreters (transliterators) who use English-based communication modes. In the first experiment, 12 Cued Speech transliterators were asked to transliterate an audio lecture. Two aspects of these transliterated performances were then analyzed: 1) accuracy, as measured as the percent-correct cues produced, and 2) lag time, the …
Educational Assessment In Emerging Areas Of Design: Toward The Development Of A Systematic Framework Based On A Study Of Rubrics, Stacie Rohrbach
Educational Assessment In Emerging Areas Of Design: Toward The Development Of A Systematic Framework Based On A Study Of Rubrics, Stacie Rohrbach
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper presents a formative study that investigates the perceived effectiveness of rubrics as assessment tools by communication and industrial design educators and first year design students in the context of a design studio. The project is motivated by the increasing challenge of assessing subjective and intangible attributes that are associated with the teaching of emerging areas in design, and society's growing need for measurable results. The goal of this project is to shed light on the perceived successes and failures of a specific assessment tool, known as a rubric, and use this information to improve students' and educators' understanding, …
The Social Role Of Design On Collaborative Destination Branding: Creating A New Journey, A New Story For The Waterfall Way, New South Wales, Australia, Manuela Taboada, Robert J Haworth, Rebecca Spence
The Social Role Of Design On Collaborative Destination Branding: Creating A New Journey, A New Story For The Waterfall Way, New South Wales, Australia, Manuela Taboada, Robert J Haworth, Rebecca Spence
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper suggests that collaborative design can be an effective tool to promote social change. A co-design methodology and the results of its application in branding the Waterfall Way (New South Wales, Australia) as an eco- and nature-based tourism destination are presented as an example. The co-design exercise actively involved stakeholders in all stages of the design process, harnessing local tacit knowledge in relation to communication design, stimulating reflection upon what is special about the places, and consequently reinforcing a sense of belonging and the environmental and cultural conservation of place. The achieved results reflect the involvement and ownership of …
