Producing A Measure For Assessing Motivating Career Influencesfor Counselors-In-Training, Tyson Kuch Jan 2008

Producing A Measure For Assessing Motivating Career Influencesfor Counselors-In-Training, Tyson Kuch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe an appropriate protocol for developing a psychometrically sound instrument to assess perceived influences motivating graduate students to enter the counseling profession. The self-report, 124-item inventory was administered to a sample of 347 graduate students pursuing counseling as a profession. All participants responded to the inventory anonymously. A factor analysis from responses grouped scale items into six different factors, and helped condense the scale into a shorter, more psychometrically sound instrument by identifying those items with low or ambiguous factor loadings, suitable for removal. A factor analysis also identified those items most relevant …

Syllabi

This is an advanced course for students with a solid foundation in missiological anthropology. The format will therefore reflect the advanced standing of the students by giving you a larger share of the responsibility for the course. There will be considerable discussion of material being read for which you must always come well prepared, some lecturing, some films, and a significant amount of time given to student presentations. The focus of the course is on the relationship between Christianity and culture. We will explore how this can engender indigenous churches, or result in syncretism or “split-level” Christianity in both Western …

This-Worldly Explanations For Otherworldly Growth: Vitality In An Ozarks Megachurch, Joseph Lee Dutko Jan 2008

This-Worldly Explanations For Otherworldly Growth: Vitality In An Ozarks Megachurch, Joseph Lee Dutko

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

James River Assembly, a Pentecostal megachurch in the Missouri Ozarks, grew from forty-two people in 1991 to over nine thousand in 2008. What led to such growth? Using ethnographic research methods such as interviews and twenty months of field observations, this study uses the story of James River Assembly to enter into the debate on congregational vitality. Three reasons emerge for the growth and strength of the church: excitement and optimism, an apocalyptic worldview, and a clear sense of identity embraced as a worthy pursuit by members. Each chapter presents theories of vitality that are useful for understanding growth at …

Home Ownership Risk Beyond A Subprime Crisis: The Role Of Delinquency Management, Melissa B. Jacoby Jan 2008

Home Ownership Risk Beyond A Subprime Crisis: The Role Of Delinquency Management, Melissa B. Jacoby

Fordham Law Review

A surge in delinquency among risky subprime home mortgages has produced calls for front-end regulatory fixes as well as emergency foreclosure avoidance interventions. Whatever the merit of those interventions, this Essay calls for home mortgage delinquency management to be conceptualized as an enduring component of housing policy. The Essay identifies and evaluates a framework for the management of delinquency that is not limited to formal foreclosure law and includes other debtor-creditor laws such as bankruptcy, industry loss mitigation efforts, and third-party interventions such as delinquency housing counseling. The Essay also proposes that delinquency management be evaluated through the lens of …

Afandamental economic and social principle embedded in the American psyche remains the value of shelter. However, housing policy is the result of a complex exchange among economic, political, and social agendas competing for attention within the multiple levels of local, state, and federal governments. This article intends to capture what we consider afea of the significant initiatives since 1980 that reflect these tensions and comprise our current housing policies and directions. Furthermore, we suggest additional housing issues that may need to be addressed by the next presidential administration.

Law After The Welfare State: Formalism, Functionalism And The Ironic Turn Of Reflexive Law, Peer Zumbansen Jan 2008

Law After The Welfare State: Formalism, Functionalism And The Ironic Turn Of Reflexive Law, Peer Zumbansen

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

This paper analyzes the contemporary emergence of neo-formalist and neo-functionalist approaches to law-making at a time when the state is seeking to reassert, reformulate and reconceptualize its regulatory competence, both domestically and transnationally. While the earlier turn to alternative regulation modes, conceptualized under the heading of "legal pluralism," "responsive law," or "reflexive law" in the 1970s and 1980s, had aimed at a more socially responsive, contextualized, and ultimately learning mode of legal intervention, the contemporary revival of functionalist jurisprudence and its reliance on "social norms" embraces a limitation model of legal regulation. After revisiting the Legal Realist critique of Formalism …

From Condition Of Limited Liability To Exceptional Remedy: The History Of Shareholder And Director Liability For Unpaid Workers' Wages In Canada, Eric Tucker Jan 2008

From Condition Of Limited Liability To Exceptional Remedy: The History Of Shareholder And Director Liability For Unpaid Workers' Wages In Canada, Eric Tucker

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

This article is part of a larger study of the recurrent dilemmas that arise when protective labor law conflicts with the norms of capitalist legality. In this particular case, shareholder liability for unpaid workers' wages was first enacted in mid-nineteenth century New York State as a condition of providing investors with easy access to the corporate form at a time when there was deep unease about its legitimacy. The Canadian debate was more muted, but prominent reform politicians expressed similar concerns about the corporation, leading them to impose first shareholder and then director liability for unpaid workers' wages. In the …

Supreme Court Of Canada Constitutional Cases 2007: Defining Access To Justice, Patricia Hughes Jan 2008

Supreme Court Of Canada Constitutional Cases 2007: Defining Access To Justice, Patricia Hughes

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

Taking a broad approach to the meaning of “access to justice”, to include not only physical and financial access to courts and tribunals, and capacity to enforce or establish rights, but also the use of the legal system to claim a share in the “goods” and realization of the values that are said to characterize Canadian society, the author analyzes several decisions of the Supreme Court of Canada in 2007 that relate to access to justice in different ways. Christie and Little Sisters (No. 2) involve the question of financial barriers to accessing the legal system; the result in both …

A Reinforcement Learning Technique For Enhancing Human Behavior Models In A Context-Based Architecture, David Aihe Jan 2008

A Reinforcement Learning Technique For Enhancing Human Behavior Models In A Context-Based Architecture, David Aihe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A reinforcement-learning technique for enhancing human behavior models in a context-based learning architecture is presented. Prior to the introduction of this technique, human models built and developed in a Context-Based reasoning framework lacked learning capabilities. As such, their performance and quality of behavior was always limited by what the subject matter expert whose knowledge is modeled was able to articulate or demonstrate. Results from experiments performed show that subject matter experts are prone to making errors and at times they lack information on situations that are inherently necessary for the human models to behave appropriately and optimally in those situations. …
