Life Domain Research Report Series: Social Connections And Community Conduct, Lirondel Hazineh, Karen Frensch, Michele Preyde, Gary Cameron

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Integral to formulating a picture of youth overall well being is to understand how youth participate in social networks with peers and friends, engage in social or leisure activities, and more generally forge healthy relationships with others. Among a variety of emotional and behavioural challenges faced by children and youth involved with residential treatment or intensive family services may be their ability to negotiate relationships within social contexts (Cameron, de Boer, Frensch, & Adams, 2003).

Data was collected about youth who had been involved with children’s mental health residential treatment (RT) or intensive family service programs (IFS), designed as an …

To The Bitter End: Disparities In End-Of-Life Care, Alberto Coustasse, Theresa Quiroz, Sue G. Lurie

Management Faculty Research

Although technological advancements have provided the means to sustain life and provide care regardless of whether the treatment is appropriate and compassionate given the condition of the patient, bioethical, legal, and moral concerns related to disparities in care still arise in the United States. These concerns call into question the necessity to continue life-sustaining or palliative care treatments when patients and/or families are faced with end-of-life decisions. This study will focus on various historical, clinical cultural, and ethical issues that have placed this dilemma into a controversial public spectrum, by using case studies retrieved from referenced literature, which illustrate disparities …

Assessing College Students Readiness To Change Alcohol Use Behavior Related To Perceptions Of Alcohol Effects On Sexual Assault, Patricia Pasky Mcmahon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The incidence of sexual assault on the college campus has not declined for women despite a national decline in violent crime. Binge drinking continues to be an issue on college campuses and has been directly associated with the increased the risk of sexual assault. The lack of programming effectiveness by institutions of higher education to deter the incidence of sexual assault related to alcohol use on college campuses continues to be a major issue across the nation. Legislation such as the Clery Act which requires all institutions of higher education receiving federal funds to make public all reported sexual assaults …

Indigent Criminal Defense: Qualitative Review On Economic Value, Ralph Mckinney, Lawrence P. Shao

Management Faculty Research

This article reviews indigent criminal defense programs on an international level and generally concludes that societies want to protect legitimate society members', within the respective society's jurisdiction, fundamental property rights concerning criminal prosecution. While this conclusion was as the researchers expected, several unexpected and contrary observations were noted. Society wealth and a greater return on investments of public funds can dramatically shift a society's value of basic shared rights.

Perspectives About Occupational Justice: Can Poverty And Occupational Deprivation Influence Child Development?, Barbara P. White Otr/L, Ph.D., Sajay Arthanat, Elizabeth L. Crepeau

The University Dialogue

In this paper we will explore the concept of occupational justice, a term that describes a basic human right to have the opportunities and rights to participate in those activities and occupations that define us as individuals, family and community members by providing meaning and purpose to our lives. Conditions of poverty preclude the ability to participate in a wide range of activities and occupations that support well-being. An anticipated outcome of our paper is to explore how poverty negatively influences engagement in those activities and occupations that support health, productivity and life satisfaction.

Attorney General’S Annual Report To Congress And Assessment Of The U.S. Government Activities To Combat Trafficking In Persons Fiscal Year 2007, U.S Department Of Justice

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

Trafficking in persons (TIP), or human trafficking, is a regrettably widespread form of modern-day slavery. Traffickers often prey on individuals, predominantly women and children in certain countries, who are poor, frequently unemployed or underemployed, and who may lack access to social safety nets. Victims are often lured with false promises of good jobs and better lives, and then forced to work under brutal and inhuman conditions. It is difficult to accurately estimate the extent of victimization in this crime whose perpetrators go to great lengths to keep it hidden. Nonetheless, the United States has led the world in the fight …

Can We Treat Criminality?, Brianna Johnson Jan 2008

Can We Treat Criminality?, Brianna Johnson

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

[O]ur current approach of punishment without treatment isn’t working. What we need are better ways to identify and treat criminality in its earliest stages and effective treatments for those preparing to reenter society following jail sentences. If we can provide some type of personalized therapy for these troubled citizens, we can better prepare them to lead lawful lifestyles outside of the prison gates.

Brianna Johnson is a sophomore biology major with a minor in mathematics. She plans to work in research and attend graduate school after graduation. Her paper was written for her GWRIT 103 class in spring of 2008 …

The Association Between Ethnic Congruence In The Supervisor–Subordinate Dyad And Subordinate Organizational Position And Salary, James B. Avey, Bradley J. West, Craig Crossley Jan 2008

The Association Between Ethnic Congruence In The Supervisor–Subordinate Dyad And Subordinate Organizational Position And Salary, James B. Avey, Bradley J. West, Craig Crossley

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

We used a large field sample (N = 32,854) to test popular press claims and propositions from relational demography theory that the ethnic congruence of the supervisor–subordinate dyad is associated with positive employee outcomes. Results indicate that ethnic congruence was positively associated with subordinates’ level in the organization and salary. These relationships were moderated by type of compensation system, such that the effects were stronger in merit-based than in tenure-based systems. In addition, the ex¬tent of the relationship between supervisor–subordinate congruence differed by ethnic group, supporting previous research that suggests examining unique outcomes by ethnicity. However, although statistically significant, effect …
