Danish Immigration To Racine County, Wisconsin: A Case Study Of The Pull Effect In Nineteenth-Century Migration, Pia Viscor

The Bridge

The year 1971 marked a turning point in Danish migration history with the appearance of Kristian Hvidt's monumental study of emigration registers maintained by the Copenhagen police. 1 Four years later, the book appeared in an abridged English edition as Flight to America; The Social Background of 300,000 Danish Emigrants (New York: Academic Press, 1975).

Development Of A Knowledge Management Strategy For Academic Staff, Leslie Whyte Jan 2008

Development Of A Knowledge Management Strategy For Academic Staff, Leslie Whyte

Dissertations

We are living in a knowledge society. Knowing what we know and managing it better to know more is considered the key enabler to sustainable economic growth. 70 to 80 percent of economic growth is directly attributed to new or better knowledge. With information communication technologies (ICT) readily facilitating the globalisation of economic activity, the key competitive advantage of this era is the ability to create, use and disseminate knowledge effectively. Although traditionally creators, guardians and disseminators of knowledge, universities and institutions need to also adapt to the challenges the knowledge society can bring and evolve their roles in education, …

Where Spirit And Bulldozer Roam: Environment And Anxiety In Highland Borneo, Matthew H. Amster Jan 2008

Where Spirit And Bulldozer Roam: Environment And Anxiety In Highland Borneo, Matthew H. Amster

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper explores changing perceptions of the natural environment among the Kelabit, an indigenous people of the Borneo interior. It considers both traditional and post-Christian conversion understandings about forest spaces. The former animistic ritual practices of the Kelabit centered on a spiritual dialogue with the natural world and this dialogue was often marked by active efforts to avoid or mitigate danger through ritual practice. One key example presented here is the former ceremony of 'calling the eagle' (nawar keniu), a ritual employed in times of crisis that exemplifies the dialogical and entwined relationship Kelabit had to the natural world. Such …

The Darwinian Cage: Evolutionary Psychology As Moral Science, Richard Hamilton Jan 2008

The Darwinian Cage: Evolutionary Psychology As Moral Science, Richard Hamilton

Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles

The jargon of evolutionary psychology has recently migrated from a few minor American universities into the academic mainstream and thence into Sunday supplements and dinner party conversations. It has even formed the backdrop to at least one award-winning novel (McEwan, 1997). Evolutionary psychology and other similar ‘biological’ explanations of human conduct pervade the Zeitgeist and, as Kenan Malik has persuasively argued, they tap into a prevailing mood of cultural pessimism. Evolutionary psychology, it seems, speaks to our desire to see the worst in ourselves (Malik, 2002).

Welfare Queens Or Courageous Survivors? Strengths Of Women In Poverty, Victoria L. Banyard Jan 2008

Welfare Queens Or Courageous Survivors? Strengths Of Women In Poverty, Victoria L. Banyard

The University Dialogue

The number of people living in poverty in the United States is staggering and yet to most of us those people are just statistics. A growing body of social science research clearly documents the negative consequences for the physical and mental health of people struggling to meet their basic needs (e.g. Recker Rayburn, 2007). Absent critical analysis of the historical and social factors that contribute to poverty, negative stereotypes and victim blaming arguments flourish – further perpetuating the problem (e.g. Bullock & Lott, 2001). This proposed position paper confronts and discourages this trend by shedding light on one of the …

Politics Among Danish Americans In The Midwest, Ca. 1890-1914, Jorn Brondal Jan 2008

Politics Among Danish Americans In The Midwest, Ca. 1890-1914, Jorn Brondal

The Bridge

During the last decades of the nineteenth century and into the twentieth, ethnicity and religion played a vital role in shaping the political culture of the Midwest. Indeed, historians like Samuel P. Hays, Lee Benson, Richard Jensen (of part Danish origins), and Paul Kleppner argued that ethnoreligious factors to a higher degree than socioeconomic circumstances informed the party affiliation of ordinary voters.1 It is definitely true that some ethnoreligious groups like, say, the Irish Catholics and the German Lutherans boasted fullfledged political subcultures complete with their own press, their own political leadership and to some extent, at least, their own …

Re-Writing The Danish American Dream? An Inquiry Into Danish Enterprise Culture And Danish Attitudes Toward Entrepreneurship, Robert Smith, Helle Neergaard Jan 2008

Re-Writing The Danish American Dream? An Inquiry Into Danish Enterprise Culture And Danish Attitudes Toward Entrepreneurship, Robert Smith, Helle Neergaard

The Bridge

This research story which to us reads like a fairytale is the secondpart of an exploration into Danish Enterprise Culture. It tells an oft forgotten tale, a Danish Success Story which we hope will one day be held even dearer by self-deprecating Danes everywhere. In telling this wondrous tale we are also serving a serious purpose in examining some socio-cultural and historical factors influencing the perceived low entrepreneurial drive of the Danish people, and perhaps also in the process helping to explain why traditionally Denmark does not have a vibrant Enterprise Culture. This work adopts a Verstehen based methodology because …

Benedicte Wrensted' S Indian Photographs, Lea Rosson Delong Jan 2008

Benedicte Wrensted' S Indian Photographs, Lea Rosson Delong

The Bridge

Joanna Cohan Scherer resurrects the career of Benedicte Wrensted (1859-1949), a photographer who emigrated from Denmark in 1893 and set up her studio in Pocatello, Idaho, a town of about 4,500 population. Over the next seventeen years, Wrensted produced approximately one hundred seventy known photographs of Northern Shoshone, Bannock and Lemhi tribal members who lived on the nearby Fort Hall Indian Reservation, along with numerous pictures of the Euro-American citizens of Pocatello as well. Though several of Wrensted's photographs of the Sha-Ban (as the tribes refer to themselves) were well known and had been frequently published, it was not until …

The Travel Diaries And Letters

The Bridge

At the dockside in Copenhagen on 21 March 1894, a worried father stood and waved goodbye to his eldest son, who had made the big decision of his life at the age of seventeen and was setting out to realize his dreams in the vast, unknown land of America. "Write soon, Christian," was the father's last word to his son. The very next day, Christian wrote his first letter

Teacher Perceptions Of The Funding Crisis In Oregon Public Schools: Policy Issues, Leonora M. Cohen, Jennfer Dixon, Gregory Sampson-Gruener, Donna Shaw Jan 2008

Teacher Perceptions Of The Funding Crisis In Oregon Public Schools: Policy Issues, Leonora M. Cohen, Jennfer Dixon, Gregory Sampson-Gruener, Donna Shaw

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

During spring f 003 Oregon endured the worst school budget crisis in the nation. To understand teacher experiences during this period, 90 teachers across the state were interviewed. Questions focused on teacher attitudes, personal/financial issues, working conditions, and changes in teaching, analyzed with simple statistics and qualitative descriptive methods. Teacher satisfaction declined; teachers were pessimistic about schools, angry about salary freezes, and wanted to retire immediately. Most expressed frustration with politics and dissatisfaction with working conditions. Almost all experienced salary loss, even when days were not cut. Teachers made many personal sacrifices and most experienced health problems. Working condition changes …
